Road repair work for Thomas Drive will soon be underway after council approved a budget that will see the road repaired from Park Lane Drive to Brent Blvd. Town administration called a special council meeting on May 22 to discuss the project, and to see a motion made. The project had been divided into two packages, A and B. Package A consists of all work recommended from Park Lane Drive to Brentwood Drive. Package B is for all of the work north of Brentwood Drive to Brent Blvd. The project had been divided because the scope of work outlined in the capital project budget was based on all work leading to Brentwood Drive, and if the tenders were to come in under budget, or if council chose to repave the entirety of Thomas Drive, the numbers would be there in package B to show the additional cost. Jesse Parker, director of operations and engineering for the town said that a previous road assessment program had identified that the section south from Brentwood Drive to Centennial Drive would be a structural overlay, and then south of Centennial Drive to Park Lane Drive has underground replacements that need to be done. The section north of Brentwood Drive was identified at that time as not being in need of immediate repair, but does have some work that would need to be done in the future. The original budget was for $3 million, which would see package A completed; however, to complete work on both package A and B the cost would raise to $3,573,676.70. Based on the approved budget package A can be completed within budget for whats been tendered. As a result the recommendation this evening is with that ($3 million) being an approved budget that we do package A, said Parker. I indicated to council that we do have pricing that is fairly reasonable for continuing the project into package B and continuing the project for all of Thomas Drive north of Brentwood Drive should council desire to continue with the project beyond Brentwood Drive. Graduates of 2013: take opportunities, be open minded, have fun

Manny Everett Times Contributor Standard School students, their families and friends and soon to be former teachers celebrated the end of 13 years of school on May 24. After a fantastic banquet the students and teachers gave tributes to each other and to their siblings and parents. Ms. Ellis gave a wonderful story that incorporated her students and the characters that she had seen grow in them over the years. Mr. Ed Yu followed with his now much awaited for song that he prepares dedicated to the students graduating in that particular year. Guest speaker for the evening, Calgary Stampede Princess and former graduate of Standard School, Dani

Gariepy, challenged the graduates to remember where you come from and be proud of that. She recalled jokingly about her adventures in travelling with the Stampede that the best part about growing up and perhaps, moving away, going to university or travelling is that you will always win the my town was the smallest competition. Her final comments were poignant in that she challenged the graduates to: take opportunities, be open minded, be light hearted, work hard, take advantage of home cooked meals, tell your parents you love them, and have fun. Students from the graduating class of 2013 represented the communities of Gleichen, Hussar, Rockyford, Rosebud, and of course Standard.

Road repair a go
Continued from Page 1 I have waited approximately seven years to have this finally come before us again to get it finished. I think we would be very remiss if we did not do packages A and B together on this. To do part of it is just doing an injustice to our ratepayers, said Councillor Earl Best. A motion was made to award the contract to North Star Contracting to complete both package A and B, for a total not to exceed $3,573,676.70. Work will begin on Thomas Drive this week and is to be completed by July 31.

Class of 2013: Your future awaits you

Manny Everett Times Contributor Celebrations happened all across Wheatland County in the Golden Hills School District and all across the nation as students with their families and friends came to honour graduates in their achievement and culmination of 13 years of school. Storefront School and Virtual School kicked off graduation ceremonies on May 23 at the Days Inn. On May 24 the gymnasium at Standard School was decked out in style for their graduates, and on May 25 Strathmore High School graduates joined in their own celebration. The high school diploma is the symbol of having successfully completed the basic education required for youths. Because of this, the presentation of the high-school diploma has become an adulthood rite that is steeped in ritual. Students who have passed their courses will have their names called out, walk across a stage, and be handed their diplomas. Sometimes, students receive blank pieces of paper wrapped with a ribbon or empty leather binders during the graduation ceremony, with the actual diploma received later. Most of us would agree that the days we spent in high school were certainly the best days of our lives. It was in school that we made our first friends, competed to excel, hoped for places in the sports teams, and learned our first lessons about life. The evening ended with the Grand March and family dance before the graduates continued with their party at another location.

Gleichen hosts RCMP Regimental Ball

Manny Everett Times Contributor The Gleichen detachment of the RCMP held their formal affair as a fundraiser for local Victim Services on Saturday, May 25, dressed in their finest. The RCMP Regimental Ball calls for full dress uniform, and so the conference room was filled to the brim with officers, male and female, young and old, wearing their finest, their red serge. The ball is a formal affair in other respects too, as there are toasts to the Queen and speeches. It is a time to celebrate those individuals who have chosen to dedicate their lives to a profession with a proud history and heritage, and to a non-profit organization who has volunteers who dedicate themselves to serving those in our community who have experienced a personal tragedy. Staff Sgt. James McLaren, in his opening address and welcoming of special guests commented on the thoughts behind the event. With glorious past and greater future greeting us every time we enter town, I cant help but think that this applies to my detachment as well as the community. It is no secret that we as members of the force have been riding a bumpy road. It is my feeling that when we act from a place of honour and if we truly care about the people we serve we can hold our heads high. This is a sentiment that I want my members to reflect on. We are

servants to this community, this county, this country and we cannot forget that. That is our existence. I want to offer this evening as a symbol of that service to you. The Strathmore Regional Victim Services Society were the beneficiaries of the event and they are the ones who are there to help when there has been a crime or a tragedy that has left someone with their world shattered. They are the ones who comfort victims of sexual assault, and who accompany the RCMP when they must notify next-ofkin of an untimely or sudden death. The Gleichen Community Ladies provided a fantastic meal for the event while the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, Strathmore 903 Squadron served the meal. Live entertainment was provided by Larry Vannatta and his band. It was an evening of fine dining, live auction, dancing and live music and most importantly getting to know the men and women behind the uniforms. McLarens commitment rang loud and clear in his comments to the community members, Thank you all for coming out and supporting us. You are the silent majority who I know have our backs when we are conducting our duties. I ask that you share the rich history of this community and get to know the person behind the serge who is sitting with you. Tell some stories and ask for some stories. 8th annual plant exchange

On May 25 the eighth annual plant exchange was held at the Strathmore Municipal Library. The plant exchange began as a way for plant lovers to share different varieties, both houseplants and outdoor plants, with other enthusiasts. Its a good way to bring a new variety into your home, without the extra cost, and it comes with the knowledge of one of the ladies who began the exchange. Ilke Schwartz and Valdine Short started the plant exchange, and this year the women had prizes to give away. Top: Valdine Short (l-r), Ilke Schwartz and Ingrid Aman. Lord of All Lutheran blesses the bikes as kids head off for summer
Pastor Dawn Nelson and the Council at Lord of All Lutheran Church in Strathmore are always thinking outside the box. Kids and adults alike brought their bikes to church on Sunday and had them blessed for safety for the coming summer months. Everyone received a sticker on their bike to remind them that God is with them when they ride and then the children received bells and reflectors from the Church to put on their bikes.

Remembering our roots

John Godsman Times Contributor

Jim Wark
time to remove him from the cab, because the ambulance and a crane had to be brought to the wreck, and it was discovered hed broken his back! When he had recovered from this injury, Workmans compensation sent him to SAIT in 1975 where he was trained as an Oil and Gas Draftsman, also known as a Process Piping and Design Draftsman. He worked in this position for the next 32 years, before retiring in 2009. In 1975, he married Bea Primrose, who had three children from a previous marriage. These three children have given them six grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren. Unfortunately, Bea passed away from cancer in 2003. Bea had a girlfriend named Lillian McIntyre, known as Lil, for years and years, even before she knew Jim. Lil was a companion to Bea during her terminal illness, and was with her up to the time of her death. As a trained Home Care worker, she was able to get a job here in Strathmore, and now lives with Jim. Jim works as a volunteer at Strathmore Heritage Days, and is a member of The Legion. When he came to Strathmore in 1968, the population was 1,200! Hes concerned at the number of businesses moving from downtown to be closer to the highway, and the arrival of all the big box stores. What will these businesses do, if/when the TransCanada is moved south to bypass our town?

Jims great, great grandfather moved from Ireland to Fitzroy Harbour, Ont. around 1840. Later that year he was married, and they had four children. In 1881, Jims grandfather moved from Ontario to Minto, Man. where he obtained his quarter section of unimproved land from the CPR and Government of Upper Canada. He married in 1896, and produced eight children. One of those was Jims father. Jim was born in 1944 at the hospital in Boissevain, Man., a little town 40 miles south of Brandon. He grew up on the family farm, which was still in Minto, 14 miles north of Boissevain. He left school at the age of 17, and commenced work as a Section Man with Canadian National Railway, where he spent the next couple of years. From here, he joined the Manitoba Department of Highways as a surveyor. He moved to Alberta in 1967, hoping to continue work as a surveyor, but this was not to be. There were no openings for anyone with that training here. So, he worked as a labourer in various jobs until 1974, when he was hired as a propane truck driver, delivering propane around what is now known as Wheatland County. In August 1974, he was heading for Hussar, when he hit a patch of oil on the road, lost control of the truck, and ended up in a field trapped in the cab, which was on its side. It took a considerable amount of

When you burn your skin, the damage continues to occur until you can cool down the area of the burn. Best advice is to immerse the burned area in cold water (no ice) for at least 15 minutes. Youll find this reduces the pain as well. People looking for an alternative to DEET as an insect repellant might look for products containing icaridin. It is effective against mosquitoes, black flies and ticks and is available as a pump spray, aerosol spray and towelettes. It is safe for adults and children over the age of 6 months. Examples of brands containing this include Deep Woods and Avon. Looking for a good source of calcium in food. Try sardines. Two ounces of this little fish provides 240mg of calcium because you are eating the fine bones of the fish. Sardines also contain significant amounts of vitamins D and B-12 and omega-3 fatty acids. Expiry dates on medication have a little leeway. They dont lose all their potency on the day of expiration. But theres one medication you want to be sure is in date and that is your EpiPen. The EpiPen is kept on hand by people with very serious allergies and can save lives. If you have an EpiPen, check the date. If its close to expiration, get a new one. If you have any questions about the EpiPen or other medications used to treat allergies, talk to our pharmacists. Wed be happy to share our knowledge.

Standing up for food safety

Kevin Sorenson, M.P., Crowfoot Parliamentary Report Our Conservative government is committed to making food as safe as possible for Canadian families. We are also committed to supporting Canadas beef industry. Throughout my tenure as your Member of Parliament, I have always taken every opportunity to sell our beef: in Japan; in Taiwan; during meetings with virtually every foreign representative in Canada when I was Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee. I always say that Alberta Beef is the best in the world. We all remember the BSE Crisis that hurt our local beef producers and the recent E. coli scare at the plant in Brooks, Alberta. Our government hasnt forgotten either and we are moving forward to bolster confidence in our beef industry for Canadian consumers and our world-wide customers. Canada already has a world-class food safety system. Our food safety-science capabilities are among the best. The Safe Foods for Canadians Action Plan aims to further improve Canadas food safety system by strengthening food safety rules, provide more effective inspection, and renew our commitment to service and more information for Canadian consumers. This is welcome news for our local beef producers in Crowfoot and beyond. Through the Action Plan, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) will launch a number of significant food safety enhancements over the next two years. Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz has directed the CFIA to work with consumer groups and industry to develop new regulations that will bring into force the Safe Food for Canadians Act, passed in November 2012. The CFIA is strengthening some of its beef safety rules and has implemented new mandatory requirements that will further control E. coli in federally-registered beef plants. Also, in the next two months, federally-registered plants that produce mechanically tenderized beef cuts, such as steaks or roasts, will be required to label those products as tenderized and include cooking instructions. While these actions are specific to federallyregistered plants, Health Canada also intends to propose broader mandatory labels to identify beef that has been mechanically tenderized at retail outlets like supermarkets. This voluntary practice has been in place since 2012. Since 2006, our Agriculture Ministers and our International Trade Ministers have made considerable progress opening up markets around the world for Canadas Agricultural products. We have even managed to expand existing markets. The Food Safety Action Plan includes the CFIAs building a secure electronic interface so it can share information and conduct transactions more effectively with industry and international partners, and introduce a clear, consistent set of inspection and enforcement rules that will significantly reduce red tape for Canadian food producers. These high-profile food safety efforts add value to our products and are further proof of Canadas commitment to provide the cleanest, safest, besttasting products available in the global marketplace. Our effort presents a challenge to our international competitors to meet these high standards. Done for the summer

Jason Hale Strathmore-Brooks MLA Recently, the spring session at the Alberta Legislature wrapped up for the summer. MLAs are back in their constituencies until October when fall session begins. As a part of the Wildrose Official Opposition, I am pleased to report a successful spring session holding the government to account on the issues that matter to Albertans. We exposed wrong doing when we saw it, opposed the back in debt budget of 2013, and proposed constructive solutions to the issues the province faces. The back in debt budget is going to saddle Albertans with $17 billion in debt by 2016. This means a return to interest payments for the first time in nearly a decade. This year alone, Albertans will pay $238 million in interest on debt. Thats money that will be taken out of front line services like health care and education just to keep creditors off our backs. Wildrose was able to positively affect the governments agenda. One of the successes for Wildrose and Albertans was a comprehensive review of the justice system to make sure victims of serious crime get the justice they deserve. After raising the case of Dani Polsom an Airdrie woman who was sexually abused and watched as her attacker walked free because of the delays in the courts in the Legislature, the government commissioned a sweeping review to ensure similar cases dont happen again. Another success was that Wildrose forced Alberta Health Services to end its degrading onebath per week policy for Alberta seniors in longterm care. By bringing attention to this policy in the media and repeatedly raising it in the Legislature, the government finally reversed the policy. Wildrose MLAs also brought attention to the AHS divorce-by-nursing-home policy, which splits apart married couples in long-term care for bureaucratic convenience. We will continue working to end this callous policy so married couples can continue living their lives together. This spring, Wildrose also opposed harmful changes to generic drug pricing. The changes were intended to lower drug prices for Albertans. You may have even heard the radio ads. But they backfired. By forcing pharmacists to sell product at an unreasonably low price, they threatened the viability of local pharmacies and put Albertans access to their medicine at risk. In fact, more drugs actually went up in price than went down to the governments centrally mandated price. Wildrose opposed this bureaucratic overreach to ensure Albertans would continue to receive the great care they do from their local pharmacists. As you can tell, it was a brief but busy spring legislative sitting for Wildrose MLAs. I am proud to be part of a caucus that stands up for Albertans and achieves results. While I am happy to be back in the constituency and to address any of your concerns, I will be eager to return to Legislative work and to represent Albertans in the fall. As MLA for Strathmore-Brooks I look forward to hearing your concerns. Strathmore.Brooks@assembly.ab.ca

More charges laid in Gleichen homicide

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter A second woman has been charged in the death of 26-year-old Tak Tai Lawrence Leung of Chilliwack, B.C. Leung died on May 18, defending his girlfriend, who has not been named, after a fight broke out between her and two other women at a home in Gleichen. Leung drove to Gleichen for the long weekend to spend time with his girlfriend whom he had met on an online dating site. An altercation broke out between Allison Rose Oldwoman, 20, and Kristy Noel Redgun, 18, both from Siksika. The women are alleged to have stabbed Leungs girlfriend before he intervened to save her. A few months ago they met online, I know there was some indication that this may have been a luring incident, thats not the case here. They met on an online dating site, they were known to each other prior to this incident and Mr. Leung was simply coming out to spend the long weekend with his girlfriend, said Staff Sgt. Ben Scott with the Calgary RCMP at a press conference on May 24. Mr. Leung in this instance was doing what I believe any parent or family member would want and that is stepping in to protect somebody and unfortunately it ended in this loss of his life. Oldwoman and Redgun have been charged with first-degree murder.

Congradulations (intentionally misspelledhonest)!

Pat Fule Fule for Thought Graduation has become a massive undertaking, what with suits, expensive gowns, rented limos its almost as big an event as a wedding! You try and tell your teenaged daughter to shop with care, and that youll only be in the gown for a couple of hours . dont go crazy on the price! But, if youre a dad, you know that doesnt always work. Grads have come to feel that this is their moment in the sun, and will be the BEST day of their lives! Thats a scary thought, because NO one wants to peak at 18! My Grad year was 1978. In 1978 kids did not even KNOW what a Safe Grad was our idea of grad was to escape the dance early, get changed, and hit the hills up where they used to mine coal. Now, we were a simple people in Canmore in 1978, and to have a party in the coal slack hills seemed like a great idea. However, as the party progressed, more and more people started to REALLY wear a lot of coal dust, as cars came and went people danced ran around it wasnt pretty. Im not too proud of my own grad night, as I imbibed far too much. I vaguely remember trying to cut straight down the steep side of the party hill. Thats when I became a coal-dust snowball. I rolled, and tumbled to the very bottom, with the odd evergreen tree slowing my crash! Then I shuffled home along the road to the Bow River Bridge. It was now daylight, and many miners were driving that same road to work! Cars and trucks flashed headlights, honked their horns, and yelled out! I even think my dad passed me although he didnt stop to talk THAT would not have been pretty! I was covered in black soot when I got home, and my mom just shook her head as I tumbled in. Todays graduations have become huge, expensive days. What I find weird is that 50 or 60 years ago, it was a HUGE deal if someone graduated from high school not many could, due to having to start work young. Nowadays, its the norm to graduate, yet its become a massive celebration. The gyms are filled with chairs, decorations, lighting, large photos of the grads, and even a big screen for people to see at the back. Then comes the banquet, closely followed by a parade of gowns and suits. Its all very spectacular, and from my own experience with a daughter very expensive!! The ceremonies however, are pretty formal and can be a bit tedious. As a sometime introducer, I try to add a bit of humour if possible. One year, the grads theme was A Royal Ball. Just before the start of the intros, I reached behind the back curtain, and said, you cant have a Royal ball without The King! I brought out my six foot Elvis stand-up (the one where hes in the gold lame suit), and he stood there through the introductions and we made jokes about Elvis and grad. The next part shocked me then, and still shocks me now. At a few places in the ceremonies, I joked that at the end, anyone could come up and pose with Elvis. Two sweet old ladies came up giggling. They asked if I would take their pictures with The King! Who could refuse? However, as I snapped the picture, both ladies put their hands on Elviss crotch! I was stunned I never expected this from them! One turned to me with a grin, and said: Ive always wanted to do that! They walked off laughing, and I was absolutely red-faced with embarrassment! I have never quite been the same since then! Two little things happened this year at the ceremonies. While walking up the centre aisle in our robes, I was suddenly jerked back! In fact, I almost lost my balance. My lovely, black billowing sleeve had hooked on an old guys walker! As I caught my balance, I had to move on, I couldnt even see what happened to the old guy, but I did hear some snickers from behind! Later when I was reading out grad intros, and we were almost done, I introduced a girl. To my right, and very close came some really loud, really high shrieks! They scared the crap out of me, and I literally jumped in my robe. Now, I cant jump very high anymore, but I did this time, and I even lost my place in the program! Thank goodness we were almost done, but that scare and the heat of the gym, made me continue to sweat buckets I couldnt wait to be done! So, my 30th grad at Strathmore High came to an end. All the staff and I survived, but I am glad it only happens ONCE a year! Dreams for downtown

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Like Kevin Costner, in the movie Field of Dreams, the Town of Strathmore has a beautiful dream to spruce up and revitalize the downtown area. They are advocating the old saying build it and they will come. The downtown redevelopment overlay presents suggestions for a special theme, based on a set of regulations and architectural controls for buildings in the downtown core. They are asking downtown business owners to choose what they would like, suggest how it should manifest itself and to invest their money into making it a reality. Town representatives were on hand to listen to a group of about 50 business and building owners at the Legion on May 23, and discuss the initial overlay suggestions. The beauty of an overlay, it does not happen immediately, it happens over time. We are talking about the overlay and asking for input from the stakeholders in the downtown area, said Linda Nelson, deputy chief administrative officer for the town, to those present. The whole idea of the overlay is not so much about limiting you, it is giving you additional alternatives and opportunities. That is the beauty of an overlay. The overlay will include special allowances to change to the land use and building requirements. The bylaw could allow things like greater population density of buildings, adaptations for creative use of unused buildings, allow vertical or basement building permits, change the requirements of how storefronts and area in-fills look, to give a more cohesive and attractive esthetic. There are green spaces, paving or stonework, fountains, entertainment, restaurants and people places suggested to enhance peoples enjoyment of the area. The suggested themes are Railway, Old town/western, or Victorian. Langdon, Rosebud, and Cochrane are among the many towns that have employed the tactic to revitalize their towns. The Town hopes to have the bylaw in place by the end of August. The downtown area currently has many empty buildings. There have been complaints of unsightly, poorly maintained areas and declining business, due to the highway and commercial expansions elsewhere in the town. Some of the things that downtown owners want to do to their premises are not currently allowed under the existing bylaw requirements for the zone. I really believe thats the beauty of this overlay system. I think the sooner we designate a special area of the downtown, there will be more of an emphasis on premises. We want to be proud of our downtown. I personally want to see our downtown as an attraction. I want to see it as a place where people want to go. I want to see it as a unique area, said Councillor Bob Sobol. The alternative is we all get up and leave and continue to see our buildings go away. I am trying to suggest we can do something. If the bylaw is in place, some ideas from the community will come forth to council, then council can approve some of

Deputy Chief Administrative Officer for the Town Linda Nelson addresses an audience filled with stakeholders , business and building owners on May 23 at the Legion. The overlay overview presented possible concepts for the downtown makeover that will go into a downtown overlay or revitalization bylaw. The Town is looking for input on the suggestions before the bylaw is put in place at the end of the summer.

these projects. Business owners have some concerns about the project. They voiced that there was an expectation of investment from businesses, but the Towns commitment was unclear. It was indicated that the Town would be responsible for the infrastructure development in the area. Any other contributions or commitments have not been determined. The overlay does not include any research or documentation, regarding why people are not currently patronizing the downtown, or types of businesses or activities that would bring businesses to the area. This is step one, just an initial small step in us moving forward. I just want to see us moving forward. The reason why we went to consultations, we prefer to have people tell us and give us ideas, said Sobol. I would really like to get across that this council is trying, we know that it is a problem. The town needs to come together and listen to you business owners, said Councillor Pat Fule. The overlay is a way to come together with some ideas of what we want to see. Fule said the bylaw might be written so it allowed greater population density in the downtown and vertical expansions over businesses, but qualified that safety concerns and structural integrity would have to be considered for all building modifications.

We need to find a way for people to live downtown and work downtown .We need to incorporate unique ideas. We have lost bigger businesses from the downtown and I am worried that there are more to follow, said Fule. Councillor Rocky Blokland is a business man in the downtown. He indicated that all small towns go through cycles of high and low business activity. Its a very good meeting here today with lots of ideas. Downtown is the heart and soul of small town Alberta. This Town Council is committed as a group to improving the town. The overlay is just a part of the whole big picture, said Blokland. Fule said that the Town is currently looking at paving the pathway in Kinsmen Park to make it more accessible year round and may consider moving the Town offices downtown in the future. He said they were open to hearing revitalization ideas from the public. Those in attendance were given surveys and questionnaires, to gather more information. They wanted volunteers for a working group to work on the overlay process. Nelson said meeting dates and the working outline for the group would be determined later. Interested parties can sign up to participate in the working group or get a survey, by contacting the Town of Strathmore office at 403 934-3133, or contact Nelson at, LindaN@strathmore.ca.

Overlay hard sell leaves doubts

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor A downtown overlay presentation given to business and building owners on May 23 at the Legion led to more questions and concerns than support. Business owners discussed the existing decline of business, the lack of financial incentives to buy into the plan and questioned the Towns degree of commitment to the program. l would like to see the town rev up its participation. The overlay is great, but forcing them to do renovations is the issue. Honestly, some of the businesses downtown are dumps, said one audience member. If I was going to move my business to town, I would preferentially pick the place that looked good. I couldnt care less how cheap the rent is, if the building is a dump or looks run down, I wouldnt take it. That is just the way it is. Business owner Sheila Crispin said there were efforts to beautify the downtown in the past and not all businesses complied. Some of these buildings are left vacant because they cannot get tenants, but they should still have a better responsibility of maintaining these buildings. Pick up the garbage. Sweep the sidewalk. Pull the weeds. In some of these buildings, no one is made to do that. The town has to fit their bylaws so the people have to do that. We ought to start small and get some of the little stuff organized first, said Crispin. Councillor Pat Fule agreed that building owners need to upkeep empty properties and town officers should checking and enforcing compliance. He also said it would be good for the Town to find out why so many of the buildings were empty. In the last two years, I have bought six retail places and in the last six months four have gone. They have all gone to the highway. How do I get these back? Reduce my rents? I need that to cover my costs, said another business owner There was discussion that some people move businesses to home bases because of high rent. The lack of adequate parking and ticketing was brought up. Comments from the floor directed blame at council for approving the development of shopping malls, leading to the empty commercial spaces. Owners didnt want to commit to the plan, when their stores were empty and there was still empty space in the newer commercial areas too. Some questioned why bylaws did not restrict commercial development. Councillor Bob Sobol suggested the empty buildings present a wise business investment now. Get in on the ground floor. Start by fixing things up and you will get renters. Stop competing with Walmart. You need unique buildings for the downtown area. It is not going to happen overnight. We cant wave a magic wand and fill these buildings up. We have to set the infrastructure and the setting so we can attract people. We have to do that with density, said Sobol. If someone owns a piece of property, and they come in and comply with everything, it moves to the rezoning. We have a public hearing and when the bylaw passes, it is a permitted use. We have to work with it, we (have) no choice, said Nelson. However, council can deny a downtown property owners request for variations in developing extra space vertically or horizontally, because it isnt included in the existing bylaw. Sobol said the overlay could help modify the existing bylaw. Some resented that if the overlay bylaw passed, it would enforce upgrades to frontages. Are you asking us, or are you telling us you are going to implement the overlay and when will this go into effect?, asked Debbie Mitzner. Any redevelopment or new development would have to comply with the bylaw and it is targeted to be in place by the end of the summer. Many felt it didnt make sense and would place unnecessary burdens on business owners. Others thought grandfathered businesses would have no incentive to comply with the plan. They wanted to know if any grants or tax breaks would be given. Some owners jested tax breaks happen automatically when the buildings are run down. You dont do upgrades, the assessments are lower and you have lower taxes. It was stated the town would only be responsible for the infrastructure of the plan. Business owners wanted to know what else Town would contribute. Lets assume this all happens. Is it the town objective, to redo sidewalk and paving stones? Will the town start to invest some of those dollars right a way to excite people basically lead the way? You are enforcing this on business owners and saying, well we will do our part whenever it is needed. How can we convince business owners to invest their dollars, if the town is not committed to invest theirs? Is the town budgeting for this? I would expect to see those crosswalks in, said John Gauvin. Suggestions from the floor were that the Town could subsidize the improvements by making low interest loans available, amortized over 20 years. They could offer incentives through significant tax breaks for participation, place highway signage directing people to downtown, allow creative building use, and develop interesting attractions to draw people in, contact businesses giving them incentives to move to downtown Strathmore. It was stated that elected officials and staff were paid by taxpayers and they had a duty to assist businesses by bringing new growth to the Town. Im not sure we can give tax breaks down here and not give them to businesses slightly further away from the overlay. Lower the tax for the downtown core and it really sets a precedent, said Fule. I dont know that we want to get involved to specifically put businesses in, I dont think that is governments job, we have to worry about the setting. Hopefully people will do the research to see if their business will work in an area. Unless we get councils approval on any project, money is not going to be spent. Council is not going to approve it just because a couple people want tax breaks. There has to be a method to this, there has to be something to show that we are moving forward in a direction to bring people back. This is step one, just an initial small step in us moving forward. I just want to see us moving forward, said Sobol. We have made changes in the past because citizens were upset. Everything is on the table. We have to find ways to get people to live and work downtown. We have lost bigger businesses from the downtown and I am worried that there are more to follow, said Fule, who was hopeful that solutions could be reached. Fule is attending a conference on town revitalizations and is looking for more information to contribute to this process. There is nothing off the table. Everything is possible and everything can be looked at. Myself, as a councillor, I want to see a downtown area that is a destination. I want to see people from Cochrane coming in to see our downtown. Obviously, we hope to have a council that will support downtown revitalization. It is getting worse by the day. I think we can turn that around, said Sobol. Anyone with support for the overlay or suggestions to improve it, can contact Nelson at the Strathmore Town office 403 934-3133 LindaN@strathmore. ca

These shoes were made for walking

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter The steady clomp of high heels could be heard through the streets of Gleichen as dozens of men walked a mile in high heels. It was the first time the Strathmore Regional Victim Services Society has hosted a Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event, and it was every bit the success they had hoped it would be. Absolutely fantastic. The weather was great, 36 men in red high heel shoes, rough estimate just over $10,000 in pledgesso were absolutely ecstatic, said Lesley Hering, program coordinator for the society. The community awareness is huge, thats the reason were doing it, but the funds are always appreciated. So (it was) a great success, I hope that the guys had fun. I have a lot of respect for women who wear high heels, Im not sure why they do it after this, said Strathmore-Brooks MLA Jason Hale who also took part in the event. This was the second time Hale has donned high heels to bring awareness to victims of sexual abuse and violence. Its a good cause, its too bad we have to have these types of (events) and bring awareness to these issues, but its something thats important to the communities and Im happy to help out and take part whenever I can, said Hale. Joe Campbell with Calgary Communities Against Sexual Abuse (CCASA) says that issues like sexualized violence continue to perpetuate because they are still silent issues and once the conversations start change can begin to happen. Im such a huge fan of events like these. Any place where people can come who dont deal with violence or talk about violence on a day to day basis and see that people getting together to talk about this is actually quite hopeful and the starting place for change, said Campbell. I got involved (with CCASA) basically because I knew that it was quite strange for a man to be involved in this work, but I really see this as a human rights issue and that women and men are both being oppressed by mens violence. I want to step up and speak out against that, Walking a mile in high heels was tough, but for the Strathmore Fire Department Fire Chief Muir Furzer it was fun, and brought him the awareness that organizers were striving to achieve. I think the event is an absolutely wonderful way to show and promote to everybody the issues that face women and violence, said Furzer. I think being part of this experience today actually opened my eyes up to how many people are concerned about this type of situation and I think it should be carried on every year now, it just starts out small and eventually well get bigger and bigger. A portion of the funds raised will remain with Victim Services to be used for future training or sexual assault victim expenses, such as hotel rooms, or clothing. Another portion will be donated at a later date to Calgary Communities Against Sexual Abuse.

The first Walk a Mile in her shoes event put on by the Strathmore Regional Victim Services Society was a resounding success with 36 men participating in the awareness walk.

Charity lamb raised to help Childrens Hospital

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter When Kylee Hebbes was picked to raise this years charity lamb for the 4-H on Parade show in Calgary on behalf of the Standard 4-H Sheep Club, she instantly knew where she wanted the funds to go. Hebbes picked the Alberta Childrens Hospital, a place that has become like a second home to her and her family. She was born with several heart defects and scoliosis and has been a patient at both the cardiology and orthopedic clinics since birth. She had two holes in her heart and then a patent ductus repair, said mom Heather. She also had Wolff-Parkinson-White system which is an arrhythmia that would make her heart beat faster than normal, and she would go into heart failure because it wouldnt slow down. She had surgery three times to fix the problem. It finally worked the last time, and at the end of June it will be two years since Hebbes has been medicine free. Two years ago Hebbes brother Landons charity lamb sold for just over $5,800 with the funds going to the Childrens Hospital. Hebbes is hoping to see $10,000 raised with her lamb, which will be the fourth charity lamb the Standard Sheep Club has raised for the Childrens Hospital in five years. I would like to get enough to make an effect, so probably even $10,000 would be good, said Kylee. She would like to see a large sum raised so that the Childrens Hospital can purchase much needed equipment or use the funds towards research. The hospital has been such a strong part of the familys life that they plan to continue showing their support any way they can. Well she wouldnt be here probably, said Heather about why the hospital is so important to her. Lots of amazing, amazing people that we will be done with in six months which is the scary part, because she will be 18. Its kind of like a little family we had, and now we dont. Its the reason Im still here for one. Theyve always been so caring and nice. Whatever I needed, they always help me through it while I was stuck in the hospital for all the days after surgeries or aftercare. Theyre like a second family like mom said, said Hebbes. Hebbes dad is now a patient at the hospitals Genetic Clinic. He has a rare neurological disease doctors are trying to diagnose. She is happy to know now that she is also helping her dad who has spent so much time helping her over the years. The Alberta Childrens Hospital serves more than 82,000 patients each year. When you give to

the Childrens Hospital you are supporting family centered child health programs, specialized life-saving equipment and advanced pediatric research. The majority of people you talk to know someone who has benefitted from this amazing hospital in either a small way or a very big way. Kylee and her 4-H club are hoping that people open up their hearts and donate to a great cause such as the Alberta Childrens Hospital. If more information is required please call 403901-5756. On June 2 at the Calgary Stampede Grounds the charity lamb will be on the auction block.

Kirstyn Johnson, 17, has made it into the Top 3 of the MuchMusic and Coca Cola Covers Competition. On June 16 the winner will be announced at the MMVAs.

Melissa David and her brother Raymond David, new co-owners of Daisy Recycling, would like to introduce themselves to all present and future clients.

Strathmore teen competes for a singles record deal with Sony

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Strathmore songstress Kirstyn Johnson has made it into the Top 3 of the MuchMusic and Coca Cola Covers Competition, beating out close to 11,000 other entries. Johnson is up against the Oducado twins from Toronto, Ontario, and Neil Pranjivan from Surrey, B.C., for a shot at a singles deal with Sony Entertainment Canada Inc., which will include a song release and a music video funded by MuchFact. The mild mannered 17-year-old with the phenomenal voice first heard about the competition while watching MuchMusic a few years ago. I had been wanting to do it for the past few years but I was like, hmm I dont know if I would even make it, is it even worth it, and then I was just like man up Kirstyn, you have to do this, said Johnson. And so she began the process. It took some time for the teen to determine which song she wanted to sing, and how she wanted to go about it. She finally opted to sing Thinkin Bout You by Frank Ocean, accompanying her vocals with the piano. I had to practice a lot. One thing you struggle with in these kinds of (competitions) is not making the song the same as it is in the original version. You want to bring your own flavour to it but you dont want to stray too far so that its not appealing to your listener. Its kind of a tough balance but its a journey for you as an artist to get to know yourself, and its challenge and I like that, said Johnson. So I just really had to sit with the song for a bit

and decide how I was going to approach it, how produced I was going to make it, if I was going to add different tracks or if I was going to strip it down and just do a funky piano sound and a vocal. I ended up just doing the piano sound and a vocal because I thought that it might be different from what everyone else was doing, because I had seen a lot of acoustic guitar covers and stuff like that. I wanted to ensure that I was going to be a little bit different from what everyone else was doing. Johnson has been working on releasing her EP, though, for now, that is on hold while she focuses on the competition. She has gained a lot of fans from being involved in the competition and she is excited to share her progress with them and future fans. If the opportunity arises to further pursue her musical career she would, even if it means home schooling until completing high school. Johnson, and her fellow Top 3 finalists, have won a VIP trip to the 2013 MuchMusic Video Awards on June 16 in Toronto, and their own 30-second commercial. The winner of the competition will be announced at the awards. Johnson would love to win, but for her the biggest goal she has right now is getting her name out there and being seen by the public. Either way Im not going to stop, Im always going to put something out no matter what happens or how this competition unfolds, theres no doubt in my mind something will be out with my name on it, said Johnson. From now until June 16 fans can view and rate Johnson for a chance at the top spot by going to www.muchmusic.com/covers.

Line painting contract awarded with stipulations

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Tenders closed on May 21 for the Towns line painting contract with the lowest bid announced at the May 22 special Town council meeting. While the interest wasnt as high as originally hoped, administration feels confident they can ensure the work holds up, and will be completed to the proper specifications. It seemed we had lots of interest on the Alberta Purchasing Connection website. We had approximately 11 groups download our tender bid documents so we were optimistic that we were going to see significant interest in our tender, and have over the past couple of years, said Jesse Parker, director of operations and engineering for the Town. Unfortunately with the end of tender we only received two tenders. The two bids were opened on May 21. The low bid worked out to $26,141.18 for the entire scope of work. The company that was the low bid is a company that we have had experience with previously, its a company called Line West, said Parker. There have been concerns in the past with the company, though nothing that would see the Town refuse to work with them. Some of the issues have been getting the contractor back on warranty, deficiency items and getting the work done in the right time frame. The quality of line paint and the resiliency have also been past concerns. Upon calling references provided for Line West Parker found they were fairly neutral. I have indicated to the contractor that we will be very diligent this year

in terms of our expectation and the application rate and the thickness of which the line paint is to be applied, said Parker. Well have a sample area established in which that will be our expectation for what the line paint application rate and thickness will be, and well use that as a reference or the review as we go through the areas. As the roads are being painted the Town and contractor, to ensure both parties are in agreement of the quality, will review them. Parker said he had phoned the second bid contractor as well. They do not have a lot of municipal experience and dont quite have the equipment needed to do the scope of work. He is hoping by having a test area with Line West it will help resolve past issues. Councillor Bob Sobol raised the question of why the tenders arent put out to the public earlier in the year. Giving these companies a little more time and giving us the opportunity to say no to a tender is a powerful tool I think. Were sort of stuckits very hard to say no at this point. We can say no but we wont have line painting until September then, said Sobol. Volker Stevin does the line painting work on the highways. Currently Parker is looking into the possibility of the Town purchasing its own line paint equipment to do the follow behind and crosswalk, stop bars and parking lines. He then hopes to talk to Volker Stevin about having them paint the centre lines and the lane lines which would see a reduction in the costs to the town. Council awarded the 2013 line-painting contract to Line West.

Summer reading program returns

Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Summer is almost here and that can only mean one thing for the Strathmore Municipal Library, the Summer Reading Program will soon be underway. The theme this year is Go, which will see participants delve into the world of global travel and exploration. Registration this year will be held at the library on Saturday, June 15 beginning at 10 a.m. We have been requested to move it to a Saturday because we used to hold it on a Monday and it would limit working parents. Registration begins on June 15 and must be made in person. To be fair we dont allow any email, fax or telephone registrations and no registrations forms or payments will be taken prior to the June 15 registration day. Register early as our successful program fills up fast, said Assistant Director of Library Services Carmen Erison. The library has discovered in past years with the program that they have high registration but low attendance. Last year the parents who participated were asked if they would be willing to pay a fee given the situation, and most agreed with the idea. The charge essentially is going to be $5 per child or $10 for a family for the entire summer. One bonus with that is every child that participates will get a T-Shirt, said Erison. We decided that a very modest fee, a very small fee might encourage families to attend and also it helps offset some costs. In the end the cost of what your child is paying for the entire summer is what pays for their T-shirt. Registration will take place at the library in June and the Summer Reading Program will run from July 23 to August 23. There are three different age groups for the program; pre k which is ages 3 to 5, Kindergarten to Grade 2 ages 5 to 8-years-old, Grades 3 to 5 for ages 9 to 11 and Grade 6 and up is the final group. Each groups programs will be held on a designated day of the week, which will be announced at a later date on both the Facebook page and the website at www.strathmorelibrary.ca/srp.

Wheatland supports 911 Centre

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Wheatland County council unanimously approved support for the local 911 Centre, until Dec. 31, 2013. Alberta Health Services (AHS) has supplied funding to the service until that date. The issue will be revisited in the 2014 budget, at which time the County may decide to charge ratepayers $12 per year to cover the service, or funds may be awarded through the 911 Emergency Act. In May, the Alberta Government passed the third reading of Bill 15-Emergency 911 Act. The 911 call centres are facing challenges that frankly they have never had to face before. The government plans to introduce changes to 911 that will give call centres the resources they need, said Minister Dave Griffiths. This legislation includes a monthly 911 levy on cellphones, the creation of standards for 911 call taking, legal protection for 911 call centre staff, fines for frivolous 911 calls and support for next generation technology. The levy is 44 cents, similar to fees charged on landlines, which was implemented 12 years ago. The money was going to the cell providers but will be diverted to supporting 911 call services. It will be charged on any active wireless cell phone, starting after legislation comes into force. A May 9th article in the Red Deer Advocate indicated the fee will be collected and divided. Seven cents of the fee goes to the telecommunications provider, a portion to the province and the remainder going to call centres, with a base amount given to every 911 call centre and the remainder will be distributed based on population. A frivolous 911 call is defined as one made to waste time or abuse the service. First offenders will face fines of $5,000 and repeat offenders will pay $10,000. Accidental pocket dials are not fined. The province is looking to develop provincewide standards, processes and procedures for 911 call taking, to ensure consistent service delivery across the province. Issues like better legal protection for 911 operators will help them maintain their focus on serving Albertans. Technology is always improving and 911 services will be updated to include text functions for the impaired and GPS location for better patient location. The Lieutenant Governor and the Minister have the ability to alter the structure and it will be clearly defined after Royal Ascent is given. Stakeholders are being asked for input at meetings held throughout the province this month. A Calgary Region Town Hall meeting, with Guy Weadick attendance, will be held at the Clarion Hotel & Conference Centre-Calgary Airport Thursday May 30, 2013, 9 a.m. 10:30 a.m. at 2120 16th Avenue NE. See www.aamdc.com/ advocacy/member-bulletins.

County dedication
Sharon McLeay Times Contributor On May 21, Wheatland County Council stepped out to dedicate the Centennial Park project at the County office, as well as the historic Caterpillar elevating grader that has been a focal point for the County office access road. Dignitaries present at the ceremony were past and present council members, county staff, and donation patron Blaine Evans. The dedication was open to the public. An accumulation of events and efforts by past and present Wheatland Council and staff have led to the development and completion of this project. It started in 2005, and the plaques honour those involved and our road and construction crews, said Reeve Glenn Koester. Koester said grants were secured to beautify the front entrance with a flower garden and seating area for waiting ratepayers. The name of the park is derived from Albertas 100th Centennial celebration and the Countys 50th anniversary that occurred in 2005. The No. 42 elevator grader had been donated to the County by the Evans family. Cam Evans originally purchased it for use in his Gleichen Construction company. Evans constructed roads in the Gleichen, Siksika, and Arrowwood area. In 1939, the machine sold for $5,300. An important selling feature was that it had its own 40 horsepower engine, or could be driven with a power take-off in tow of another tractor. It had an operating weight of 16,630 pounds. The equipment was made from 1935

Ribbon cutting ceremonies at the Wheatland County Office for the dedication of Centennial Park and the No. 42 Caterpillar elevator grader plaques were held on May 21. Past and present councillors and staff were on hand, along with special guest Blaine Evans (kneeling first on left).

until 1942, when it was phased out of production. The Evans family donated the grader to the County in 2006, where it was restored to non-operable condition and strategically placed so Wheatland County ratepayers, residents and tourists could enjoy a historical reminder of road construction long past.

Blaine Evans said that his father would have been happy to see the grader preserved. He had memories of standing on top of the machine and operating it at the early age of 14. He felt that it was important to remember our rural heritage and provide learning opportunities for new generations as well.

1 5 - y e a r- o l d Sarah Lecavalier has been invited to tryout for Albertas U18 team. Previously, she tied for the leagues top scorer in Bantam Boys AA, as part of the Wheatland Warriors.

sports
Jordann Mackay (l) is presented with a cheque from TransCanadas Shari Geisel for her career in gymnastics on behalf of the Alberta Sports, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation. Mackay finished with bronze at the 2010 Alberta Winter Games, and won eighth overall at this years provincials. The grant will cover her fees and costs for 2013.

Lecavalier hopeful for Team Albertas U18

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Hockey player Sarah Lecavalier recently competed in the Team Alberta Challenge with 119 girls; from there, the young ladies can qualify for Team Alberta U16. Sarah, however, along with 10 others, was asked to move up to Team Albertas U18 tryouts. She was the only girl from Strathmore invited to tryouts. From May 10 - 12, 88 players invited from across the province traveled up to Spruce Grove for U18 fitness testing, skills practices, and three games. Lecavalier unfortunately got injured in the second match up. I got hit like really weird, this girl came and I dont know if it was a stick or an elbow, Lecavalier said. But I got hit in the front of the ribs and it tore my kidney. She was in hospital for five days, and is still recuperating painfully. What she was most concerned about was missing the rest of the second game (where she only played two shifts) and the entirety of the third game. The team was cut down to 46 young ladies, and though Sarah missed part of the weekend, she is invited to continue on with tryouts come July in Camrose. This will involve more skill sessions, on ice practices, and fitness training. After that, the 46 will go to a tournament in September, where the team will make their final cuts down to 23. Those 23 will represent Team Alberta U18, starting at the Nationals Tournament in November taking place in Calgary. I know thats the path you take to get to U22, to get to the National Team, to get to the Olympic Team, Sarahs mother, Nelia said. You actually have to be on these teams to be selected. Lecavalier played on the boys Bantam

AA team this past year, the Wheatland Warriors, where she tied for top scorer in the league. They were a great groupweve kind of had a relationship like no other team would have, she said. Moving to playing with girls is a big change for Lecavalier, who has been playing with boys since she was fiveyears-old. Its a really different game. The boys its like dump and chase, youre on them, and you have support. But with girls, its all about control and positioning. Like, its much smarter, Lecavalier said. You have to think about everything youre doing. Team Alberta Girls scouts typically would never recruit from boys leagues; they would have missed out on her tremendous skill. If Sarah fails to make U18, she knows at least a spot is saved for her on U16 though skipping that initial step would be supremely beneficial to building her game. Lecavalier feels her work along the boards, her shot, and her speed bring up her confidence on the ice but she still needs to get to know (the other) girls games more for sure; they have a lot of different systems. As an underage player in the U18 division, this process is all new for the Lecavalier family. When playing with boys, we play during the year, we have spring off, she does lacrosse, we have summer off, we train, and then we go back on the ice. So this whole thing with the U16, and the U18, and Team Alberta, I have no clue what happens, Nelia said. Sarah may have to move from home, or study on her own with the team. The 15-year-old says shes ready. I didnt really get opportunities like this, just playing with boys, Lecavalier said. But its pretty exciting.

Mackay receives $1,500 towards gymnastics career

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Jordann Mackay, 16, received a grant of $1,500 in competitive gymnastics through the Alberta Sports, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation. Individuals can qualify only once, for the maximum amount of what Jordann was given. This (the cheque) was a really big help for her for this year, said Tara Smith, head coach of the Strathmore Silhouettes. Money unfortunately is a big thing in sports; theres so many kids that dont have the opportunities, and grants like this enable them to be able to take part; moving onto coaching even, which benefits other kids too. A friend of Mackays mom, Korri, found out about the grant two years ago, and recommended she seek it for Mackays gymnastics career with the Strathmore Silhouettes. I applied for it, for her, under what we call extraordinary circumstances, and it paid for her fees, and kept her going through the year, which I wasnt in a position to really do, Korri said. TransCanada is in partnership as a corporate sponsor with Alberta Sports, Recreations, Parks and Wildlife Foundation; under the TransCanada website, in Community Investment, anyone can apply for grants groups, clubs, coaches. We get a budget for the regions, we have to sit and have meetings, really analyze every single request, and figure out as a group, which ones we feel are the ones in need, said Land, Community, and Aboriginal Associate for TransCanada, Shari Geisel. Korri had to explain their circumstances, provide Mackays resume, and accomplishments. Shes got a lot of bling on her wall, lots of gold and silver. She retired (in 2012) and then she came back, and shes been coaching. So I had to put all of that together, Korri said. The Silouhettes train at Jumphouse Gymnastics, and have around 13 members, whereas most clubs have up to 200. Jordann competed in the 2010 Alberta Winter Games, finishing with bronze, and won eighth overall this year at Provincials. Strathmore became a name that was recognized, Korri said. We accomplished something, and Jordann was one of them. Now, a Level 1 Certified Coach, Mackay helps with seven to nineyear-olds, and wants to build her coaching career. With one more year of school left, she would be able to carry on through college and save up some money. I like coaching here, Mackay said. But definitely a bigger club (in the future). Its been really nice to see her grow. Shes been competitive for six years, and just to see her grow as an athlete, and into a teenager, said Smith. To see her take on the responsibility of coaching its really nice to see them grow with the sport.

SHS and Holy Cross shine at Wheatland Countys Track and Field
Shannon LeClair Times Reporter Each year with students graduating, the loss of skills and experience leave teams to look towards the younger students to step up and fill shoes. Strathmore High and Holy Cross Collegiate should have no problem doing so, as both their Jr. Girls and Jr. Boys teams displayed great results at the Countys Track and Field Meet on May 22. Strathmore Highs Kyle Foster came first in the 100m dash, the 400m dash, and the 3000m dash, followed closely by teammate Grady White who finished second in the 100m, but first in the 200m. 15-year-old White also took first in long jump. Josh Hauck of Holy Cross finished first in triple jump, and took second in both long jump and high jump. Christopher OLeary, a fellow Hawk, had the best results in shot put and discus. On the girls side, Karly Larson of SHS finished first in high jump, the 400m, and the 800m. From Holy Cross, Alicia Magwood took first in triple jump and long jump. Both schools hold great depth for upcoming years. But as for 2013, look for 18-year-old Will Kemp of Strathmore High to stand out at Zones; he finished first in the 800m, 1500m and the 3000m. Similarly, SHS Sr. Jessica Murphy came first in three events as well: 100m, hurdles, and high jump. Zones will take place at Foothills Park on May 28, followed by Provincials (also at Foothills) June 7-8.

Fishing Derby for seniors and kids

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Seniors and kids 17 and under can compete in the Annual Robert Rebeyka Memorial Fishing Derby at Kinsmen Parks lake on Saturday, June 22. Theres going to be prizes for everyone, but theres going to be a big prize for the biggest fish caught (by length), for boy and girl, said Al Koltusky, fishing chair of the Wheatland Conservation and Wildlife Association, the club holding the event. All prizes will be sponsored by the Canadian Sportsmens Shows, and the club itself. The Memorial Tournament was thought of by the group years ago, said Clint LaRiviere, club president. Rob was a past president and he was a sitting president when he passed away. The club decided to do something in honour of him; he was really active in the club. Rebeyka, an RCMP officer, was in his mid-thirties when he died of a heart attack roughly 15 years ago. The town stocks the lake each year with trout that range from 0.5 lbs. to 2.5 lbs. All contestants are required to cast only from the shore or the docks, and must be able to reel in their own fish. Kal Tire will provide a BBQ for hotdogs and hamburgers. Registration opens at 9 a.m. (for only $1), and the event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; participants are welcome to join anywhere in that time frame. Volunteers are always needed as well. All money fundraised by the event will fund youth programs within the club. The Wheatland Conservation and Wildlife Assoication which has approximately 300 members meets every Wednesday for trap shooting.

7th annual golf tournament to unite officers and town

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter The Strathmore Emergency Services Charity Golf Tournament has given the opportunity for local firefighters, and RCMP members, to mix and mingle with the general public since 2007. They get that opportunity once again, come June 21, with a 9 a.m. shotgun start at the Strathmore Golf Club. Last year we sold out, said Program Coordinator for the Strathmore Regional Victim Services Society, Lesley Hering. And it looks like its going to be another sold out event. Approximately $12,000 was raised in 2012 from the tournament, with 144 participants. The tournament is sponsored by the Strathmore Regional Victim Services Society, the Town of Strathmore Fire Department, the Strathmore RCMP, the Town of Strathmore Municipal Constables, and the Wheatland and District Emergency Services. Golfers all start out on different parts of the course and the tournament is run in a Texas scramble style; there are two teams on each hole, four players on each team, and each player hits from the same spot to begin. Everyone on the team then hits from the best drive of one of their players, from hole to hole. Its $125 to play, Hering said. It gets you the 18 holes of golf, a beef dinner, golf cart use, a gift for every player, opportunities to win at the silent auction, 50/50, and all kinds of fun stuff. There are also many hole-in-one prizes, including trips, cash, and cars - so start practicing your swing. If interested in joining, as an individual or a business group, visit www.emergencyservicescgt.org, or contact Lesley Hering at (403) 934-6552.

Ranch Field to have official opening

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Though it has been in use for the start of this season, Strathmore Minor Soccer Federation (SMSF) will host a mini tournament with surrounding town teams on June 15 at the new Ranch Field behind Wal-Mart. Its worked out very well, said President of SMSF Mark Shorhen. Weve had good responses from other teams. The field was built with the help of the Government of Alberta Initiative, which provided a grant of over $100,000, covering roughly a third of the cost. The basics of the area were finished last year, with posts and irrigation systems being implemented last month. Teams will still have use of the field off of Park Lane Drive, but the new area will be used by the Grassroots House-league players (U4, U6, U8) from May to June, and the competitive teams (U10, U12, U14, U16) from April to July. This is the first year the Strathmore Spurs have had a U10 girls team, and numbers are continuing to grow for the league overall. We were kind of caught off guard with the excess numbers, Shorhen said, whos managed the league for seven years. We started out small, and then it ended up getting a lot more, filled up all the teams to the max as well. We took registration up until we ran out of jerseys this year, and we ended up having to still having to turn people down. The club, which began in 1998, has roughly 400 players involved this season; Strathmore Veterinary Clinic has sponsored everyones jerseys. Shorhen also encourages adults to attend dropin sessions on Friday evenings, which will begin May 31 at the new Ranch Field.

18-year-old stops in Strathmore during Cross Canada Cure walk

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Salmon Arm, B.C.s Breyden Erickson is spending his summer a little differently than his pals. The 18-year-old is attempting to walk across Canada for cancer researchhe left March 23 from Horseshoe Bay, B.C. for Sydney, Nova Scotia, where he expects to arrive sometime in October. He made a stop in Strathmore on May 22. My friends have mixed feelings about it, Erickson said. Some of them are confused as to why Im still doing this, and others are saying Aw hey, thats awesome, what can I do to help? One of his friends is the reason for the adventure. Diagnosed with leukemia, Erickson credits her for part of the initial spark of the Cross Canada Cure journey. I just figured I could do something, and I might as well make it worth my while, he said. But why walk, when you could run, bike, rollerblade, or cartwheel? Ironically, part of the reason I think was, a year ago, I got caught speeding and lost my license, Erickson said. For quite a few months I was without a vehicle, and since my dad was working, he couldnt always give me a ride. I had to walk to work; 4.5 km on the highway there, 4.5 km backso I thought, walkings not that bad. Though his largest expedition so far was 58km in Savona, B.C. (with rain and big hills, of course), he averages roughly 30 km per day, and can do about 5 km per hour. He says he did minimal training in preparation for the voyage. One of the things I wanted to prove is that you didnt really have to go to the gym every day and work out as much as you can, Erickson said. Someone who sits at home, plays videogames, and hangs with friends can do this too. For the first two weeks of the walk, he carried a 60 lb. backpack with all his tenting gear, and camped out at night by himself. Afterwards, his grandparents were able to meet up with him, and drive along in their RV. They split their time between leapfrogging ahead, and following behind on the shoulder while their grandson walks against traffic on the left side of the road. Al and Norma plan on sticking with him at least until Thunder Bay, but may journey with him all the way to Nova Scotia, possibly selling the RV once Breyden finishes. Erickson even sold his own car to put forth some cost to expenses. Its been an entire family and friends effort, whether it be providing a place to stay, giving some food, or taking care of logistics week to week on the fly: My moms been calling ahead, my uncle and aunt handling PR, my other uncle with the blog (crosscanadacure2013. blogspot.ca). My dads been helping out with the phone bill, whenever he can, which is a big help, Erickson said. He hikes with a small backpack of water bottles, and usually listens to music, audiobooks, or podcasts to keep himself occupied. The teen says the most difficult parts so far have been the flatlands: Its boring. I miss steep hills through the mountains because at least that was something to look at. Though grandmas cooking is a close second, he says Rogers Pass was his most favourite part of the trip. That was incredible, to see how freakishly tall those mountains were, Erickson said. Looking forward to the provinces hes never seen, such as Manitoba and Quebec, Erickson admits there have been some ups and downs, including temporarily losing his wallet, breaking in new running shoes, and showering in the RV with his tall, lanky frame. Erickson is also using this event towards a Grade 12 P.E. credit through an education outreach program to finish his high school diploma. He eventually wishes to study at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton. There are two ways to contribute to Breydens Cross Canada Cure Walk; the expenses portion covers his gas, campgrounds, food, etc. while you can also donate at www.tinyurl.com/crosscanadacure for fundraising. Braydens goal is to raise $323,323 (since he left March 23, or 03/23). He currently sits just under $3,000. Notably, the Mayor of Salmon Arm, Nancy Cooper, donated $500 to Breydens cause, as did Salmon Arms Bell with $300. Weve been very grateful to everyone so far who has lended us a place to stay, said Erickson. Weve gotten a few free campsites or deals on things in exchange for advertising. By the walks end, he will have travelled 6,000 km by foot. If kept on schedule, he will leave the Alberta border by June 1. Any amount counts, thats no exaggeration, Erickson said. Like Terry Fox, with a dollar per Canadian. Thats easily enough to get our goal met. The sooner that happens, the better.

Archery: social or family fun

Aryssah Stankevitsch Times Reporter Anyone from three-year-olds to 60-year-olds have tried their hand with the Strathmore Archery Club for the past twenty decadesinside and out. From January to the Victoria Day long weekend, the club is based indoors at the Ag Grounds; from May long to the fall, they have an outdoor range just south of No Frills on Orchard Park, equipped with 3D animal mannequins and paper targets. This year, the club has close to 60 members. This year we had a large number of new families join our club, which is really nice to see, said Club President, Kevin Kemp. Its a great family sport. Its something that anybody of any age or ability can do. Its just a whole lot of fun. The club is considered a non-profit organization and is an affiliated member of the Alberta Bull Hunters Association, who supply the clubs insurance. Member fees are $55 for adult, $45 for youth, and $110 for families. Lessons are available as well, even for first-time non-members, at $5. Members can borrow the clubs equipment to go out and practice shooting for the summer, but can only use it to hunt if licensed by the government. Hunting is something if you want to get interested in it, its an option. Other than that, its just an awful lot of fun to shoot the targets, Kemp said. We dont give lessons on hunting, we basically teach how to use your bows properly, and safety on the range. All that is done in-house and theres no extra charge for that. The club does not face any other members of the Alberta Bull Hunters Association, but the members do challenge each other on the range. It is a social activity when everybodys in there. The camaraderie, the storiesits just a really good group of people that come in and have fun, Kemp said. The range is open daylight hours now after the Victoria Day long weekend. Kemp invites anyone to drop in for the Memorial Fun Shoot event June 2.
Councillor Bob Sobol (l-r), Mayor of Strathmore Steve Grajczyk, and 18-year old Breyden Erickson in front of the Cross Canada Cure Walk RV. Mayor Grajczyk donated to Ericksons cause by providing gas money.
