trade improves draft order
The Falcons considerably improved their draft order after trading
wide receiver Laurent Robinson, its fifth round (160th overall) and
sixth round (196th overall) draft choices to St. Louis for its fifth
round (138th overall) and sixth round (176th overall) selections on
April 6. With the trade, the Falcons moved up 22 spots in the fifth
round and 20 spots in the sixth round.
The move marks the first trade for the Falcons since September 2,
2008 when the team gave the Denver Broncos a 2009 seventh
round draft pick in exchange for cornerback

In 2008, the Falcons rookie class played a key role in helping the
team to a successful campaign. Three rookies, including QB Matt
Ryan, OT Sam Baker and LB Curtis Lofton all earned the starting
job at their respective positions while another four first-year play-
ers saw action.
Quarterback Matt Ryan - Started all 16 games under center and
completed 265 of 434 passes for 3,440 yards, 16 touchdowns and
11 interceptions for an 87.7 passer rating. Ryan completed a 62-
yard touchdown strike on his first career NFL pass.
Offensive Tackle Sam Baker - The USC graduate pieced togeth-
er an impressive preseason and started five games at left tackle.
Linebacker Curtis Lofton - In 2008, ranked second in tackles
among all rookies in the NFL and ranked fourth on the team with
108 stops (67 solo). Named to the Sporting News All-Rookie Team.
Wide Receiver Harry Douglas - Douglas posted his first two
career touchdowns in Week 12 against Carolina. His first came on
a seven-yard end around in the first quarter. Douglas stuck again
with a 61-yard punt return in the fourth quarter. In 2008, he totaled
320 receiving yards, 69 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
Cornerback Chevis Jackson - Posted 33 tackles and five passes
defensed in 2008. Returned his first career INT 95 yards for a
touchdown against New Orleans in Week 10.
Defensive End Kroy Biermann - Posted his first career sack in a
Week 13 matchup against San Diego and added his second in the
season finale against St. Louis. Also contributed with 14 tackles.
Safety Thomas DeCoud - Saw action on special teams and fin-
ished the season with five special teams tackles.
SOLID FINDS IN THE FIRST
The Falcons hold the 24th selection in
the first round of the NFL Draft, marking
only the ninth occasion in franchise his-
tory the team will pick at the 20th spot or
higher. Atlanta has seen a great amount
of success when drafting higher than
the 20th pick in the draft. The last three
selections, including wide receiver
Michael Jenkins (2004), wide receiver
Roddy White (2005) and offensive line-
man Sam Baker (2008) all currently
start for the Falcons. Below is a look at
Atlanta’s eight past selections late in the
first round.
Bobby Butler spent 12 seasons
with the Falcons from 1981-92.
1981, Bobby Butler, CB (25th overall) - Butler competed in 169
career games (1981-92) and currently ranks sixth on the Falcons
all-time interceptions list with 27.
1989, Shawn Collins, WR (27th overall) - Collins led the Falcons
in receiving at the conclusion his rookie season with 862 yards on
58 receptions. He also added three touchdowns.
1990 Steve Broussard, RB (20th overall) - Broussard led the
Falcons in rushing in 1991 and 1992 while totaling 1,472 yards and
10 touchdowns in four seasons with the team.
1995 Devin Bush, S (26th overall) - In four seasons with the
Falcons, Bush intercepted three passes, recorded 16 passes
defensed, forced two fumbles and recovered three fumbles.
1999 Patrick Kerney, DE (30th overall) - Kerney ranks third on
the Falcons all-time sack list with 58.0 while contributing with 543
tackles, 10 fumble recoveries, nine forced fumbles and 20 PBUs.
2004 Michael Jenkins, WR (29th overall) - Jenkins has started in
45 career games and has totaled 185 receptions, 2,372 yards and
17 touchdowns in 77 games. Last season he posted his best year
in terms of yardage (777), receiving average (15.5) and longest
reception (62 yards for a touchdown).
2005 Roddy White, WR (27th overall) - White has tallied back-to-
back 1,200-yard receiving seasons (2007-08) while setting a fran-
chise record in receving yards in 2008 (1,382) en route to his first
Pro Bowl berth. In 64 career games, he has notched 230 recep-
tions for 3,536 yards while adding 16 touchdowns.
2008 Sam Baker, OT (21st overall) - Baker saw action in eight
contests last season (starting in five) and was part of an offensive
line that allowed a franchise-low 17 sacks in 2008.

NFL Draft. Center Todd McClure holds the longest draft tenure
after being selected by the team in 1999 and will enter the 2009
season having started in 112 consecutive games. Atlanta also
extended the contracts of wide receiver Michael Jenkins (drafted
in 2004) and defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux (drafted in

10 p.m. EST. In 2008, the first round consumed three hours and 30
minutes and the second, two hours and 23 minutes. The draft will
resume on Sunday at 10 a.m. EST for the final five rounds, ending

eight hours and 33 minutes in 2008.
