HBM Calibration Laboratory

You can rely on our measurement professionals
In 1977, the first accredited German Calibration Service (DKD) Laboratory was based at HBM. Since then, it has become one of the best known and most capable calibration laboratories of its type. Accreditation to ISO 17025 covers the measured quantities force, pressure, torque and voltage ratio mV/V. DKD German Calibration Service Association of calibration laboratories with protected quality Each laboratory is accredited by the German Metrology Institute (PTB) Accreditation guarantees calibration in accordance with mandatory standards and guidelines A calibration certificate is certified proof of traceability Working standard calibration Calibration at the responsibility of the calibration laboratory carrying out the testing Traceability must be explicitly documented. At HBM this is done by reference to DIN 10012 Under certain conditions, possible on site

Measuring and Test Equipment

Are you certified per ISO 9001?

Calibration ensures traceability per ISO 9001 To quote from ISO: measuring equipment shall be calibrated or verified at specified intervals, or prior to use, against measurement standards traceable to international or national measurement standards.

Examples of Calibrated Measurement Equipment

In industry, force transducers that have been calibrated at an accredited laboratory (e.g. DKD) often serve as an in-house reference. They can be used, for example, to check the transducers in use in production systems, thus ensuring a constant production quality. An important field of application is calibration, in conformance with standards, of transducers incorporated in material testing machines.

Calibration with a Z4A force reference transducer

Especially when calibrating amplifier systems (e.g. MGCplus), HBM can use its know-how as a manufacturer of such systems. A resulting customer benefit is that reliable ok / not ok evaluation is included.

Rotating torque transducers are used, for example, in engine and transmission test benches in the automotive industry. In many areas, such as research and development or exhaust gas tests, the demands made on accuracy are getting ever more stringent. Working standard calibration at the HBM Calibration Laboratory ensures traceability, or alternatively, traceability can also be proven through onsite calibration, for which DKD-calibrated reference transducers are ideal.

Calibration in a partial load range

For certain requirements, it makes sense to restrict calibration to part of the possible measuring range, which often improves the accuracy in this part of the range.

Single device What are your calibration requirements?

Measurement chain

Calibrating a single device or a measurement chain

Strictly speaking, calibration only applies to applications for which the measuring instrument is used in accordance with the calibration conditions. So from the point of view of minimizing deviations, so-called calibration of the measurement chain is ideal: the transducer is calibrated together with the particular amplifier with which it is going to be used in the application. On the other hand, you should choose to calibrate individual devices if the transducer and the amplifier are not permanently assigned to one another.

What you can expect from calibration

When calibrating a measuring instrument the correlation between the input quantity and the output quantity is determined under specified conditions and documented. The input quantity is the physical quantity to be measured, e.g. force or pressure. The output quantity is often the electrical or electronic output signal of the measuring instrument, although it can also be a reading. Calibration is often confused with other terms, or lumped together with terms that describe quite different processes: A test that establishes the extent to which a requirement is met Adjustment during which a measuring instrument is set up or balanced in order to eliminate the known systematic variations for the intended application Legal verification that covers quality testing and rating in accordance with the verification specifications. This is prescribed, for example, for test equipment for pricing (shop scales, petrol pumps) or for medical products and is performed by Weights and Measures Boards Balancing the measurement chain, in order to convert the known measurement properties of a transducer (typically obtained from calibration) to the correct settings at the measuring amplifier

Classification

Classification and measurement uncertaintly

The measurement uncertainty comprises the individual metrological properties (reproducibility, interpolation error, etc.). A DKD calibration for the measured quantities of force and torque includes computation of the measurement uncertainty using these criteria and, in addition, making a classification in compliance with the relevant standards

How long is a calibration valid?

Basically calibration is only valid at the time it is performed The user is always responsible for specifying calibration intervals Recommended: approx. one year for electronic devices, and max. two years for transducers
