Opening ceremony of the academic year at Jagiellonian University in Krakow

A welcome from Poland

Poland has a lot to offer to a student coming from a far away country. There are over 400 both public and private higher education institutions in the country. Many of them with centuries old tradition but all of them well technically equipped and with outstanding, internationally recognised body of professors on their staff. For a foreign student considering studying in Poland it is very important to know that one does not need to speak Polish language to study in our country as most of universities offer either entire programmes or rich portfolio of courses in English. It is possible now to get entire education in English in fields ranging from mining and medicine to music and art. Realising the importance of internationalisation of higher education the Conference of Rectors in Poland together with the Perspektywy Education Foundation established a special programme called Study in Poland with the purpose to facilitate international exchange of students and to provide international students with information on higher education in Poland. Poland is a good country to come and study. It is stable, safe and centrally located in Europe. Polish people are known for their hospitality and friendly attitude to people from other countries. It is also worth noting that Poland is one of least expensive countries of the European Union. We look forward to welcoming you!

Why POLAND?
q Poland is a fascinating country that serves as the

geographical and cultural crossroads of Eastern and Western Europe. Located at the center of the Northern European plain, Poland has been a nation of survivors since the foundation of the first Polish state more than 1000 years ago. Through its turbulent history its people have managed to maintain their identity, and today, the country enjoys a crucial position as the largest of the former Eastern European states and the most populous new member of the European Union.

the 21 December 2007 Poland joined The Schengen Area. As a result passport checks are abolished on Polands borders to Germany, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Lithuania. It practically means that persons admitted to the Schengen Area can travel hassle-free between 24 countries of the Schengen Area without internal land and sea border controls, from Portugal to Poland and from Greece to Finland.

Polands education market has been the most dynamically developing one in Europe during the last ten years. The number of higher education institutions has increased five fold while the number of students quadrupled. Each year almost half a million young people begin their education at universities and colleges. Polish academic traditions reach back to 14th century, some of the Europes oldest universities can be found here. The Jagiellonian University of Cracow was established in 1364. Nicholas Copernicus and Marie Skodowska-Curie are among great names of Polish scientists known and admired worldwide.

Thanks to its location, Poland occupies a special place in European Union. Polands border on the river Bug became the EUs eastern border. In the wider geographical and geopolitical sense Poland occupies a central position. More and more foreign investment from Western Europe is to be shifted to Poland, as well as from the US and Asia. Polands geographic location facilitates the logistics activities and forecasts indicate an increase in the number of immigrants to the country.

Todays Polish universities continue the glorious traditions of their predecessors. Warsaw University is ranked first in the Top Coder international IT ranking, it outperformed such great institutions as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A representative of Poland also leads the Top Coder individual ranking.

Why POLAND?

Universities have some special offices to take care of the needs of every international student. Specially assigned Polish students help newcomers to adjust to their new environment. Phenomenon unique to Polands education market is the large share of it in the hands of private institutions of higher education. The composition of the Polish market is comparable to that in the USA. There are now about 310 privately owned universities and colleges in Poland and 138 state schools of higher learning. Thanks to high level of competition the cost of studying is lower than in other European countries.

Students who decide to study in Poland in English can do so at one of more than 100 institutions. These include universities, technical universities, higher schools of engineering, agricultural academies, academies of economics and numerous other higher vocational colleges and teacher training colleges. HEIs in Poland emphasize the application of scientific knowledge for future professional needs. Strong focus is placed on fundamental and applied research, as well as on creative and artistic work.

Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) who as the first in modern times developed a heliocentric

theory of the Solar System and Maria SkodowskaCurie who discovered polonium and radium in 1898 are the world-famous Polish scientists. Nowadays Polish scientist are responsible for such break-troughs in science as: discovery of the practical implementation of blue laser, the design of the technology for the manufacture of the smallest synthetic diamonds in the world, construction of an artificial heart or designing nano-cristals for the purpose of 3G mobile telephony system. Aleksander Wolszczan, Polish astronomer graduate of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toru, was the first to prove the existence of a planetary system in the Universe outside of our Solar System. Studying in Poland offers a wonderful opportunity to get to know the rich culture of the country, to see splendid historical monuments and to enjoy some of Europes largest and most unspoilt natural habitats. Thirteen sites in Poland have been put on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. One of them, the Biaowiea Forest, is the biggest naturally afforested area in Europe and the last remaining section of primeval forest, with some species of flora and fauna unmatched anywhere else in Europe. Its, for example, the habitat of the European bison, the continents largest mammal. Another UNESCO site which arouses excitement and admiration is Malbork Castle, erstwhile headquarters of the Teutonic Order and the largest Gothic fortress in Europe. Also Wieliczka Salt Mine, the worlds oldest commercial enterprise still in business, became a destination for tourists from all over the world. Todays mine is a labyrinth of corridors and chambers 350 km long, 2 km of which are accessible to visitors.

Andrzej Wajdas speech at the Oscar Award ceremony

Fryderyk Chopin, the greatest Polish composer

Arthur Rubinstein about Chopins music: Chopin was a genius of universal appeal. His music conquers the most diverse audiences. When the first notes of Chopin sound through the concert hall there is a happy sigh of recognition. All over the world men and women know his music. They love it. They are moved by it. Yet it is not Romantic music in the Byronic sense. It does not tell stories or paint pictures. It is expressive and personal, but still a pure art. Even in this abstract atomic age, where emotion is not fashionable, Chopin endures. His music is the universal language of human communication. When I play Chopin I know I speak directly to the hearts of people! Did you know The International Frederick Chopin Piano Competition is one of the oldest and most prestigious events of this type in the world, organized in Warsaw since 1927. Winning one of the prizes awarded at the Frederick Chopin International Piano Competition marks the beginning of a great artistic career and opens a path to the most famous concert halls. The Polish Chopin Competition brought fame to such pianists as: Lev Oborin, Bella Davidovich, Maurizio Pollini, Martha Argerich, Garrick Ohlsson and Krystian Zimerman.

Frederic Chopin (1810-1849) virtuoso pianist and the greatest Polish composer of Romantic period. He wrote his works especially for the piano, including concerts, sonatas, etudes, preludes, polonaises, mazurkas and waltzes. His works had an enormous influence on the music of the end of the 19th and the 20th centuries.

Jagiellonian University
First founded in 1364, the Jagellonian University has been an integral part of Krakows life for almost 650 years. The Universitys importance of the international scene dates back to the 15th century when some 44% of the entire student population was coming from abroad! Today, with its growing curriculum and course lists offered in foreign languages, the JU is once again drawing an increasing number of the worlds best students to its ancient halls and modern campus. Being recognised worldwide, the JU is a member of the European University Association, Coimbra Group and the Utrecht Network. Junior academics and doctors from the Jagiellonian annually receive over 10% of the prestigious grants awarded by the Foundation for Polish Science in recognition of the level of their scientific research. Academics from the University are effective in their competition for grants from European research programmes, and the University has several European Centres of Excellence. The ancient Jagiellonian University, covered with the moss of centuries, is simultaneously a young, innovative place. A new, modern campus, called the Third Campus, between Zakrzwek and Pychowice, is being built barely 4km from the centre of Cracow. In 1999, the Research Centre for the Life Sciences was opened there, and in 2002 this was followed by the opening of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology building, with the most up-to-date scientific and technological infrastructure in Poland, and the Institute of Environmental Protection. In 2005, the new site for the Institute of

Geography and Spatial Management was opened. The infrastructure in the very centre of Krakw is also being transformed and modernised in 2005 the Auditorium Maximum was opened; a complex of lecture halls and the first real conference centre in Krakw. With almost 46 000 students enrolled, 3657 academic teachers and almost 500 distinguished professors, JU provides 93 professionally focused course areas in the most notable fields. For the past few years, JU has consistently occupied top positions in various rankings of the best universities in Poland. Its degrees are recognised worldwide. With its outstanding level of teaching and being held in high regard on the international map of education, studying as a degree or exchange student is an unforgettable personal experience, and life-time academic and professional investment. Today, JU is recognised for Offering students a wide range of possibilities to develop academically, intellectually, and professionally; q A broad specialisation in studies relating to the issues involved regarding european integration; q A long standing commitment to the spread of knowledge in the most professional manner; q High-quality and internationally renowned research; q Dynamically developing didactic and research centres; q A wide range of innovative study and research options that seek to stir the aspirations for analysis, critical discourse, and dialog to stretch intellectual standards.

I was surprised by the friendly atmosphere and individual treatment of each student. I like the way students trying to function with their clumsy Polish are approached here. Both teachers and fellow students not once helped me in my struggle through thick maze of the Polish language. Thanks to my studies at the UKSW I look at Poles through their friendliness and forthcoming attitude. I have experienced it and I will become an ambassador bringing the positive opinion of the UKSW to the world, and to the Philippines in particular.

Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski

University in Warsaw
One of the youngest Polish comprehensive universities On September 3, 1999, the Sejm, or the lower house of the Polish Parliament, enacted a law establishing a new university in Warsaw the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyski University. Since opening its doors, the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyski University in Warsaw (or, UKSW for short) has steadily grown and is now comprised of seven faculties and twenty-four fields of studies. Programmes and Courses The programmes are offered on a full-time (free-of-charge) and part-time basis. There are both continuous programmes leading to a graduate degree, as well as programmes leading to an undergraduate degree (Level one), and then to a graduate degree (Level two). UKSW also offers post-graduate and PhD programmes for those who aspire to improve their qualifications. Most of the programmes and courses are certified by the University Accreditation Commission and by the State Accreditation Committee to prove top quality of education. Our students can benefit from a study period abroad at more than 60 European universities as part of the Erasmus programme, as well as domestic study periods at 18 Polish universities as part of the Mobile Students Program, or MOST. Apart from a wide educational offer, the students can also take an active part in a number of special interests groups, students

organizations or student government. There is also a theatre and choir at the University. UKSW offers classes at two main campuses one located at ul. Dewajtis 5 in Bielany district, and the other one at ul. Wycickiego 1/3 in Mociny district. Apart from classroom areas, the Bielany campus also features: the Main Library, central administration offices, and a student cafeteria. As regards the Mociny campus, in 2008 there will be a state-of-art Interdisciplinary Education and Research Centre opened with a hall for sports and other events. Polish language course Foreign nationals admitted to UKSW are obliged to attend classes in Polish as a Foreign Language, and to take an examination in Polish at a level set at A5 according to the language proficiency levels of ALTE, or C2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The Polish classes are offered free of charge, and the students take them as part of their mandatory curriculum. The proficiency level in Polish for students who are foreign nationals is assessed on grounds of an interview or other tests. Depending on the results of the test or interview, students are enrolled in the classes at the appropriate level. In addition, there is the Polish Language and Culture Summer School offered, on a fee basis, by the Institute of the Polish Language at UKSW. The classes are addressed both to foreign nationals with Polish roots, as well as individuals who do not have any family ties to Poland but are interested in the culture and history of the country. Foreigners who wish to improve their Polish for professional or personal purposes will find them useful as well. For more information go to: http://www.kursy_jezyka_polskiego.uksw.edu.pl/

University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn

The University of Warmia and Mazury (UWM) was established on September 1st, 1999. The founding of the University in Olsztyn, a city with a 650-year history, was a dream come true for the many generations who had been trying to turn Olsztyn into a strong academic centre. The University combines a 50-year tradition of the University of Agriculture and Technology , a 30-year tradition of the Higher Teacher Education School and a 450-year tradition of theological education in Warmia. The University community has excellent models to follow: Nicolas Copernicus with his groundbreaking achievements in astronomy and economy, the philosophers Johann Herder and Immanuel Kant, the botanist Andrzej Helwing, the mathematician and astronomer Friedrich Bessel and Emil Boehring, a Nobel Prize laureate in medicine. The University is an autonomous institution of higher education and employs over 2 950 persons, including 1900 academic teachers, of which 500 hold the title of professor and 250 the postdoctoral degree (doctor habilitated). 154 faculties provide education to almost 40 000 students. More than 6000 students graduate from University every year. Out of 15 Faculties, 11 enjoy full academic rights, which means that they are authorized to grant postdoctoral (doctor habilitated) and doctoral degrees. 12 Faculty Councils are entitled to confer the doctoral degree in 17 disciplines.

Most of the research and teaching facilities as well as student dormitories are located in the district of Olsztyn-Kortowo, which forms a university campus. The Kortowo campus has a highly developed infrastructure, including modern laboratories, lecture halls, research and recreation facilities and a housing estate - managed by the Student Aid Foundation AK. The campus is one of the most beautifully located academic centers in Poland. Although its main role is to provide education, the University of Warmia and Mazury is also a cultural and sports center. The most popular cultural activities are: the Professor Wiktor Wawrzyczek Choir, the Folk Dance Group Kortowo, the Student Theater CEZAR, the Scuba Diving Club Skorpena, and the Student Photographic Agency Jamnik. Our students are also successful sportsmen. The mens volleyball team Mlekpol AZS is currently the vice-champion of Poland. Our students have also won gold, silver and bronze medals in taekwondo, yachting and athletics in the Polish championships. The students of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn entered the 21st century with the necessary knowledge and qualifications, ready to attain the most ambitious goals and to realize their dreams.

Why Poland?
Why Poland? This question had bombarded me prior to and after my arrival in Poland. It is those nice people whom I met as well as both the way of studying and living here in Poland that made this study exchange an excellent one. Polish students may seem to be shy at the first place; however, you will find them very approachable and helpful once you take a step forward to know them.

I feel totally integrated

The first motivation that made me come to the AGH-UST was its great reputation. Then, the project proposed to me was about advanced process for engineering that could give more value to my degree of MSc. Finally Poland as a country attracts me a lot. This is a new destination for Erasmus exchange, much more favorable for a professional carrier than the famous, old UE cities. Poland has become a strategic member of UE that strengthens its market position in the industrial world. I feel totally integrated and I really like my life here.

Great place to study
Pozna is a very nice place to live and study. Its a calm place without lots of traffics and pollution but at the same time is a big city with lots of things to do. The Poznan University of Technology is a lot bigger than we are used to in Portugal. But it has very nice teachers, some of them speak Portuguese. The Erasmus program is very good for our graduation, because we learn how to deal with a completely different culture, different languages. It will be very useful to those students who want to work in an international company. Helio Martins, Faculty of Computing Science and Management, student from Portugal

Poznan University
of Technology
Study at Poznan University of Technology technology in a positive climate Poznan University of Technology (PUT) grew out of the State School of Mechanical Engineering which was established in 1919. Currently, it is one of the leading technical universities in Poland which has become one of the most recognized landmarks of the region and even the whole country. To a large extent this was possible due to the renowned pragmatism and reliability of the people of Poznan. To work and study at such a prestigious university as PUT, one has to effectively combine conceptual impetus, the pragmatism of an engineer, as well as interpersonal skills. Taking all these into consideration and striving for our ideals day by day, we observe the following rules: Science for people We do not retreat from the world: technological development is accompanied by the greatest respect for human beings, protection of the natural environment and sustainable economic development. World class scientific research Our scientists, some of whom are members of the Polish Academy of Science, are leading experts in their areas. Their research is published in prestigious international journals and they often win academic prizes. Open-minded approach to science PUT plays an important role in international scientific life: we take an active part in scientific exchange and international projects and cooperate with many companies and research institutions both in Poland and abroad.

Very positive experience

I have found Krakow to be the perfect city for any student who wants to experience a European lifestyle, culture and history. I believe I made the right decision in coming to Cracow University of Technology, living in central Europe made it possible for me to travel to more countries than I ever would have imagined. The professors that I have been working with have given me a great insight into the architecture of Poland and greater Europe. The relationship between professors and students is unique because of the smaller class sizes.

Opole is a stunning city

Opole is a small city exactly what I was looking for. There were some Erasmus students from Opole at my university in Germany who told me that Opole is great, so I came. I study mathematics here and I find the programme very interesting. I also attend graphical engineering classes that I would never do in Germany because there is not such an opportunity. The Polish language classes are good too, and they are useful in real-life situations. The Polish students are great to get along with, in general. I am looking forward to the big students holiday Piastonalia.

Positive surprise
I was really nicely surprised by the attitude of the professors at the University of Physical Education in Poznan they were really helpful and open to dialogue. Their English is excellent, so I have a great opportunity to improve my linguistic skills and get a lot of practice in speaking. Also the sport facilities, available to students, are really great. We can use gym, swimming pool, football field, racing track, health club and many others. Polish students may seem to be shy at first, but I find them very friendly. They help foreigners as much as they can.

After graduation from a high school in Moscow I enrolled at the Pultusk Academy of Humanities. Choosing the school I took into consideration the Academy had been winning first place in the rankings for some years. Once I had arrived in Pultusk I was nicely surprised by the number of departments and fields of study, and highly professional teaching staff. I also noticed modern, well equipped buildings, and full computerised library. Active cooperation with foreign universities were other reasons that convinced me.

Pultusk Academy

of Humanities

Great works are often inspired by a human dream. Such was, as quite a number of the founders declare, the origin of Pultusk Academy of Humanities (formerly: Pultusk School of Humanities), a school for higher education opened in a small town, actively pursuing its statutory activity and providing its students with quality education. The ATENA Academic Education and Research Society, the founding body of Pultusk School of Humanities, by making its successful attempt at turning that idea into reality, over 10 years ago, made it possible for lots of young people to obtain higher education. The history of Pultusk Academy of Humanities is a continuation of the history of Pultusk School of Humanities established on 14th July, 1994. That was when the Minister of National Education entered the School into the national Register of Higher Education Schools. It was also then that the School was authorized to run undergraduate-level courses in the following fields of study: Polish Language and Literature, History, Education Studies. A year later (on 28th April, 1995) the Minister of National Education authorized Pultusk School of Humanities to launch courses in some other fields of study as well, i.e. in Administration, Political Science, and Environmental Protection. On 30th September, 1996, the Minister of Education, under a resolution passed by the Main Council for Higher Education dated 18th September, 1996, authorized the School to run graduate degree programmes.

The meaningful high-standards education delivered at the School, the educational efforts of all its lecturers, and the eagerness of its students were rewarded on 26th March, 2001, when the Central Commission for Academic Titles and Degrees, after seeking an advisory opinion of the Main Council for Higher Education, authorized the Schools Faculty of History to confer doctoral degrees in History. On 22nd April, 2002, similar authorization was granted to the Faculty of Political Science. Moreover, under the Decision of the Minister of National Education and Sport of 17th November, 2003, the School was permitted to conduct undergraduate-level courses of study in still another field: of Tourism and Recreation. On 2nd July, 2004, the Minister of Education authorized Pultusk School of Humanities to run undergraduate-level courses of study in the field of Sociology. Consequently, the School is currently able to provide higher education in seven fields of study. On 22nd March, 2002, Pultusk School of Humanities was named after Aleksander Gieysztor, an outstanding and world famous historian, co-founder of the School and its ex-lecturer of a long standing. All this has been achieved within as little time as one decade only. Ten years have been enough time for the School to arrange for its own educational facilities, including the impressive Central Library named after Andrzej Bartnicki, the First Rector of Pultusk School of Humanities. Under DSW-3-JG-4001-67-06 Decision of the Minister of Science and Higher Education dated 19th September, 2006, Pultusk School of Humanities has been renamed Pultusk Academy of Humanities, AH.

For me, as a foreigner, a very important matter, apart from the level of knowledge acquired in the college, is also the atmosphere of studying. What I mean are the everyday relationships with friends from the group, relationships with lecturers and college authorities and kindness shown in the Deans office. In The Ateneum I have found everything what guarantees that I do not feel lonely. These unique and lovely characteristics create an emotional bond between me and my college, although I am many kilometres away from Ukraine, where I come from.
