DESCRIPTION
Cola®Teric ISA-35 is an amphoteric surfactant based on an isostearic alcohol starting
material. This unique amphoteric surfactant is supplied as a 35% active aqueous
solution in the form of its Zwitterion or inner sale at pH in the range of 5 to 7.
Adjustments of the pH to 4 – 4.5 results in a material which behaves as a cationic agent
while increasing the pH to 8.5 or above produces an anionic surface active agent.

This product is completely salt free and offers the formulator the advantage of reacting
Cola®Teric ISA-35 with any acid or base he chooses to prepare the corresponding salt
and thus avoid the contamination of the product with undesirable inorganic salts.

PROPERTIES
Cola®Teric ISA-35 offers the formulator a product exhibiting unusual lubricity, “feel”, and
viscosity building properties.

Cola®Teric ISA-35 yields medium foam or lather by itself and good foam can be
achieved in combination with other surfactants.

Cola®Teric ISA-35 exhibits excellent compatibility with nonionic, anionic, and cationic
surfactants. It is stable to high concentrations of acids and alkalies and is compatible
with high electrolyte solutions.

Cola®Teric ISA-35 is useful in building the viscosity of numerous shampoo formulations.

Those based on amphoterics can be significantly increased by the addition of small
amounts of Cola®Teric ISA-35 in particular.

Colonial Chemical recommends that Cola®Teric ISA-35 be added to the water phase of
a formulation at 40 – 50 º C. Once the product is thoroughly dispersed and solubilized
the other components may be added

Solubilities @ 10% as is concentrations:

Soluble – water, alcohol, glycol ethers and alkanolamines
Insoluble – aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons
Dispersible – mineral oil and natural oils and fats.

IRRITATION
Standard tests show this product to be extremely mild and not a primary skin irritant.

Procedure: Mix Colonial ALS and water with slow agitation and heat to 50 - 55º C. Add
Cola®Mate SS-40 and then add Cola®Teric ISA-35. Allow batch to cool to 40 - 50º C and
add perfume, preservation, and color as desired. The “as is” pH is 5.8 – 6.0 with a
viscosity of 2000 – 4000 cps.

Procedure: Add Cola®Teric LMB to water while heating at 60 º C. Add Cola®Teric ISA-
35 and mix to 60 º C with gentle agitation until blended. Cool to 40 º C, adjust pH with
phosphoric acid to 4.0, and then add perfume and color as desired. Finished viscosity is
approximately 1000 – 1500 cps.

Procedure: Mix ingredients in order listed and heat to 60º C with slow agitation. Cool to
40º C, and adjust pH with phosphoric acid to 5.5 – 6.0. Finished viscosity is
approximately 14000 cps.
