June 2nd is
From family members to close friends, everyone knows someone whose life has been touched by cancer. On Sunday, June 2, thousands of people around the world will gather to observe the 26th annual National Cancer Survivors Day. Hundreds of communities across the U.S. and abroad will hold celebrations on this day to honor cancer survivors and show that there is life after a cancer diagnosis and its worth celebrating. National Cancer Survivors Day is a cherished annual worldwide celebration of life. It is the one day each year that we pause to honor everyone who is living with a history of cancer including Americas nearly 14 million cancer survivors. "A survivor is anyone living with a history of cancer from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life," according to the National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation. NCSD provides an opportunity for cancer survivors to connect with other survivors, celebrate milestones, and recognize the

healthcare providers, family, and friends who have supported them along the way. It is a day for cancer survivors to stand together and show the world that life after a cancer diagnosis can be meaningful, productive, and even inspiring. NCSD activities will be as diverse as the communities where the events are being held and will include parades, carnivals, walks, races, art exhibits, health fairs, inspirational programs, and more. There will be laughter and tears, shouts of joy and moments of quiet reflection, hope for the future and strength to endure today, and maybe even a little music and dancing. The National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation, administrator for the celebration, is encouraging everyone to participate in their communitys event. To locate the one nearest you, check with your local cancer treatment center, hospital, or American Cancer Society office. "When most people hear the word cancer, they automatically think the worst," says Foundation spokesperson, Laura Shipp. "But the truth is that more people are living longer and better quality lives after cancer than ever before. National Cancer Survivors Day is an opportunity for these cancer survivors to come together and celebrate this new reality in cancer survivorship. There is life after cancer. And thats something to celebrate." NCSD started in the United States in 1987 and is now celebrated worldwide in countries including Canada, Australia, India, South Africa, Greece, Saudi Arabia, Italy, and Malaysia, according to Shipp. The nonprofit National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation provides free guidance, education, and networking support to hundreds of hospitals, support groups, and other cancer-related organizations that host National Cancer Survivors Day events in their communities. The Foundations primary mission is to bring awareness to the issues of cancer survivorship in order to better the quality of life for cancer survivors. Cancer survivors may face physical, emotional, social, and financial challenges as a result of their cancer diagnosis and treatment. Many are confronted with limited access to specialists, a lack of information about promising new treatments, inadequate or no insurance, difficulty finding employment, and psychosocial struggles. "To say that cancer is challenging is an understatement," says Shipp. "But it is a challenge that millions of people 14 million in the U.S. alone are overcoming. Though life may not look the same after a cancer diagnosis, these survivors are showing us that life after cancer can be rewarding, exciting, and filled with joy." The National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation, along with the NCSD 2013 national sponsors Bristol-Myers Squibb, Coping with Cancer magazine, and Lilly USA, LLC, is encouraging a greater commitment to resolving quality of life issues for cancer survivors. "More resources, research, and increased public awareness are needed to improve the quality of life of cancer survivors," says Shipp. "Because of advances in modern medicine, cancer survivors are now living much longer after diagnosis. However, long-term survivorship poses its own unique challenges. We need to do a better job of addressing the hardships survivors face beyond treatment." Leading up to the event, the Foundation urges everyone cancer survivors and supporters alike to spread the message that there is life after cancer, and it's something

Tips on starting a garden

By Tresa Erickson For years, you worked alongside your grandfather in his garden and enjoyed the fruits of his labor. Now that your grandfather has decided to give up gardening, you'd like to continue the tradition in your own backyard. Here are some tips to ensure you get your vegetable garden off to a good start. Select the proper site for your garden. Vegetables require good soil, water and light. Take some samples of soil from the areas you are considering and have them tested. This will tell you what the pH of the soil is and what you need to do to adjust it. The ideal site would require very little amending. It would also have a spigot nearby, or better yet, a sprinkler you can run on a timer. Don't select a site far away from the spigot and waste time running back and forth with a watering can. Make sure the site you choose receives eight hours of full sun per day. Any less than that, and your vegetables may suffer. Prep the site accordingly. Till up all of the grass and mix in some fertilizer and compost to enrich the soil. Slow-release, general-purpose fertilizer and a couple inches of compost are ideal. These will add nutrients to the soil and improve drainage. If you need to adjust the pH, you may add the amendments now. Water the soil thoroughly to help the fertilizer dissolve into the soil. Choose the right plants. Some vegetables are easier to grow than others. Some are hardier than others. Some are more suited to areas than others. Find out what will work best for your situation and select disease-resistant varieties. Some of the easier options may include carrots, cucumbers, green beans, herbs, lettuce, peas, peppers, spinach, squash and tomatoes. You could plant seed, but since you are just beginning, you might have better results if you buy seedlings. Start off small with a few plants and add to your garden over time as you gain more experience and become more confident. Plant at the appropriate time. While some plants can be put out in the early spring, others must be put out after the first frost. Find out when the best time is to plant and do so carefully, following the directions on the labels, spacing out the plants properly and watering them well. If you are planting seeds, you should keep the soil moist until they sprout. You may then let the soil dry out some. Tend to your garden with care. Water and weed it regularly. The soil should remain somewhat damp; if it is continually dry, you should water it more often. To retain moisture, consider adding some mulch around plants. Provide ample support. Use trellises for cucumbers or peas and cages for tomatoes. These will provide support, and in some cases, may even protect the plants from rabbits and other nibblers. Starting a vegetable garden takes time. Don't rush it. Speak to experienced gardeners and follow their advice. Before you know it, you will have a garden you're proud of.

By Tresa Erickson You love to garden and have a menagerie of tools and equipment to prove it. You name it, and you probably have it. While you store much of your tools in your garden shed, it is starting to get full. You need some additional storage space and a second shed is out of the question. Your spouse would have a fit. It's time you got creative and came up with some alternative storage solutions. There are many places around your lawn and garden where you can store your tools. Trees, bushes, planting beds, woodpiles and fences all provide excellent coverage. Just stash your large tools and equipment behind the areas and retrieve them as needed. For the storage of smaller tools and equipment, consider purchasing some sort of plastic bin. Several are available, some of which may serve a dual purpose. Some bins may serve as benches with storage inside, while others may be constructed to resemble boulders and the like and serve as landscaping features. You can place these bins almost anywhere, in the yard or on a deck. You can get creative and make your own storage solutions from wood. You may build a bench running the length of your deck with storage inside or add doors all the way around underneath for a unique storage area. You may construct a low platform and fence it in for the storage of your garbage cans. The choice is yours. You don't have to extend your garage or add another garden shed to house all of your tools and equipments. You just have to get creative and look for areas where you can tuck things out of sight. When possible, store items close to where they will be used. You will make more efficient use of your time that way. Imagine having your pruning shears tucked away in a bench under your big oak tree rather than 25 feet up the hill in your garage. How much easier they would be to retrieve and use.

So many choices
By Tresa Erickson Bit by bit, you've been updating your kitchen, refacing the cabinets, repainting the walls and replacing the light fixtures. You've ordered new countertops, and while installing those, you'd also like to replace your sink. The cast iron sink currently in your kitchen has seen better days. Not only is it old, but it's stained and just doesn't work for all of the cooking you do. The time has come to go shopping, and get ready, the number of choices available will astound you. There are many types of kitchen sinks on the market today, and the materials they are made of vary just as much as the styles. Some of the more common styles include: Farmhouse sinks. These have an apron and can sit on top of the countertop or be mounted underneath. They are generally fairly deep. Prep sinks. These are fairly small and serve as a second sink. They work well for homeowners who entertain a lot or have more than one cook in the family. Trough sinks. There are long and lean and allow for more than one faucet and drain, making them convenient for kitchens with multiple cooks. Seamless sinks. These are part of the actual countertops, providing for a seamless look. They also eliminate the crevice between sink and countertop, making cleanup a breeze. Undermount sinks. These are designed

These sit on top of the countertop, and because they are higher, require less bending over. Although once reserved for bathrooms, vessel sinks are now being designed specifically for kitchens. These are just some of the more common sink choices. You are sure to come across more, including the traditional sink, which sits on the countertop. You will also find sinks made of a variety of materials from stainless steel and copper to natural stone and porcelain to go with any decor.

From page 1
Design Program (JDS) is a dynamic arts and science curriculum that teaches wetlands and waterfowl conservation to students in kindergarten through high school. The program incorporates scientific and wildlife management principles into a visual arts curriculum, with participants completing a JDS design as their visual "term papers." The Junior Duck Stamp Design Contest is the culmination of the Junior Duck Stamp educational program. After studying waterfowl anatomy and habitat, students may articulate their newfound knowledge by drawing, painting or sketching a picture of an eligible North American waterfowl species. Drake first participated in the Junior Duck Stamp program when he was in fifth grade. He has participated in the program every year for the past seven years. "The program has been excellent in promoting conservation and the arts, which are a huge part of Drakes life" said Drakes mother, Jean Schlosser. Students from around the United States submit drawings to their state for judging. Winners from these competitions, called the "Best of Show," are then submitted to the Federal Junior Duck Stamp Design Contest. One image from the 53 Best of Show entries is selected to become the next Junior Duck Stamp. Throughout his years participating in the program, Drake has won seven first place awards in his age category and has won Best of Show for the state of Wisconsin in 2010, 2011, and 2013. This year, Drake was awarded second place and received a $3,000 scholarship. His painting is currently on display in West Virginia and a print of it will be on display for the month of May at the Horicon Wildlife Refuge Center. "(This experience) has given Drake exposure on the state and national level," said Jean Schlosser. "It has given him the opportunity to use his God given talent to help promote conservation and the arts which tie in with his educational interests." Drake plans to attend a college or university in Wisconsin this fall. "I encourage more schools to participate in this program," said Drake via email. "It is a worthwhile cause, its educational, and a lot of fun." Junior Duck Stamps are sold for $5 each by the U.S. Postal Service, Amplex Corporation, and various National Wildlife Refuges. Proceeds from the sale of Junior Duck Stamps are returned to states for environmental and conservation education programs.
