0ur goal is a simple one: To grow food, to grow minds and to grow community.

Growing Power is always looking for land to help us make our organic soil we use to grow our food and our communities. We are looking for 5-10 acres of land that will comply with Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources regulations for a large-scale compost facility. This site will allow us to compost food scraps and turn them into rich, organic soil. Every year, Wisconsin produces 500,000 tons of waste, which includes food that could be used as compost. We continuously strive for that number to go down.

reflections
from the editor
Jackie Peters
jpeters@naturespathways.com

June has arrived! As we embrace the official start of summer

here in Wisconsin, I hope all of you are able to find inspiration in this months natural beauty. This really is a great season to explore our wonderful forests, parks, public lands and waters, so make an attempt to get outside and celebrate National Great Outdoors Month! This June observance is sponsored by The American Recreation Coalition, which is dedicated to the protection and enhancement of everyones right to health and happiness through recreation. Parents can make these outings teachable moments by broaching related issues such as volunteerism, health and outdoor ethics. Speaking of family time, June is also the month we formally honor our fathers. Its amazing the impact that involved dads and granddads have on the well-being of children ( and the example that their healthy choices can make!). Fathers, ensure your commitment can continue by taking the time to care for yourself and go to your chosen health practitioners for preventative care. There is much support available! As usual, our authors have some great articles to help us on our journeys to health. Rob Reader shares some insight into choosing a massage therapist who is the right fit for us. Carol Michalski takes a light-hearted approach to encourage us to take a few steps out of our comfort zones and take some risks in life! Doug Kloss educates us about how hearing loss can lead to social isolation and

some remedies to get those of us who suffer back to life. And, of course, there are many more, so enjoy! Happy Fathers Day to all of you dads out there! Make some time to enjoy the great outdoors with your loved ones. In health and happiness,

Ethical practices of yoga

How is one to act in this world?
By Hope Zvara

Ashtanga yoga is the pathway to attaining absolute truth.

ogic philosophy and the yamas and niyamas (the first and second limbs of yoga) offer us a road map on how to treat ourselves and others, and as a result, connect more fully with our inner truth. The eight limbs of yoga offer anyone who is willing to partake a wonderful guide to more mindful living. This pathway to absolute truth is one combining inner and outer work, physical practice, our breath, mindfulness, concentration and meditation. Yoga is not a religion, but it is an opportunity to live a better quality life and a more purposeful one at that.
1. Yamas: restraints for ones external tendencies or behavior. Ahimsa non-violence. Are you a bulldozer

or a forklift to those around you through your thoughts, words and actions? Ask yourself if this is lifting people up or crushing people down. Satya truthfulness, honesty. Ahimsa helps us to not use truth as a weapon. Satya questions us being nice vs. being real. Asteya non-stealing. We steal others time, attention, power and confidence. ADIKARA: the right to know or the right to have; you are a visitor in life not an owner. Take note of all that you take that is in fact not yours. Reflecting on the first two yamas, we may steal more than just someones property. Brahmacharya nonexcess. Acting in Brahman (Holy Spirit) means entering each day with a sense of holiness rather than indulgence, remembering that everything is sacred. Aparigraha unselfishness, non-possessiveness.

Non-attachment and being able to let go. We are like a monkey in a cage with a banana; we choose our attachments rather than our freedom. Why?
2. Niyamas: self-control over ones internal tendencies. Saucha internal and external purity. What is your process of

purity? Think about what used to be our Sunday best purity in each moment? Focus on consistent purity rather than selective purity. Santosh contentment. Why is my cat so skinny?

By Dr. Jodie
any pet guardians believe if their pet is eating well, the dog or cat must be healthy. In many cases, this observation is a good measure as to a pets wellness. However, many a kitty parent has been fooled to believe their aging feline was well, as it developed a serious case of hyperthyroidism along with a ravenous appetite! Indeed, an excessive appetite accompanied by profound weight loss is the hallmark of this common cat disorder. This condition is particularly difficult to notice when an overweight pet is early on in the disease progression. In fact, pet parents may be pleased with the chubby pets weight loss, attributing it to a diet change or an increase in exercise. Holistic veterinarians have observed that if a cat lives long enough, it is quite likely to develop hyperthyroidism. The usual time of onset is eight or more years of age. A thorough annual wellness exam, which includes complete senior blood work, can easily catch this disease in the early stages. Unfortunately, if this does not occur, many cats with this disorder progress to a potentially fatal heart disease called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Most cats with cardiomyopathy do not have an easily detectable heart murmur. This creates yet another easily missed risk factor. Cats with cardiomyopathy do not do well with anesthesia. Many aging felines need dental work. Pre-anesthetic blood work to rule out or diagnose hyperthyroidism and cardiomyopathy is imperative, as dental prophylaxis or extractions must be

performed under anesthesia. Hyperthyroid cats are at an increased anesthetic risk. When hyperthyroidism is diagnosed, it can be treated. Early recognition and treatment can often reverse the heart disease. Treatment options range from simple to complex. Daily pills, liquid, a topical gel, a radioiodide injection with isolation, an iodine restrictive diet or surgery are all possibilities. Clients should be well-informed as to all these options so that they can make an educated decision as to which treatment is best for their situation. The medication methimazole is given orally to decrease the overactivity of the thyroid. Most cats tolerate this medication very well and quickly gain weight. Some hyperthyroid cats have diarrhea, which resolves quickly with this treatment. Many have high blood pressure, which also improves rapidly. When left unchecked, high blood pressure in cats can cause retinal detachment and sudden blindness. Feline guardians often present their cat to a veterinarian or behaviorist for management of intense

How women can reduce their risk of diabetes

illions of people across the globe are living with diabetes, a chronic disease in which sugar levels in the blood are high. The side effects of diabetes can be serious, and some people might become very sick even before they are diagnosed, while others may need to make drastic lifestyle changes upon diagnosis in order to avoid more dire consequences, including death. Though diabetes does not discriminate based on race or gender, women should know that certain things can elevate their risks. Birth control pills, for example, can increase a womans blood glucose, or blood sugar, levels. Elevated blood sugar levels are a symptom of diabetes or prediabetes, a condition when blood sugar levels are high but not high enough to indicate diabetes. Prediabetes can eventually develop into type 2 diabetes, and recent studies have shown that prediabetes increases a persons risk of heart disease. According to the American Diabetes Association, women going through menopause may also have elevated blood sugar levels thanks to hormonal changes. So what are women concerned about diabetes to do? Though theres no way to prevent type 1 diabetes, which is most often diagnosed in children, teens or young adults, women can take steps to reduce their risk of type 2 diabetes. Increase your lean muscle mass. A study published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism found that increasing muscle mass can reduce peoples risk of developing prediabetes. This is significant for women who may avoid lifting weights in favor of cardiovascular equipment like the treadmill or elliptical machine. Though cardiovascular exercise can burn glucose as well, its still important to build lean muscle by including some strength and resistance training in a workout regimen. Dont carry extra weight. According to a 2001 study from researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health, overweight people are 20 to 40 times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than people with healthy weights. If you are carrying extra weight, a combination of diet and exercise should help you shed pounds and lower your risk for type 2 diabetes as a result. Embrace whole grains. In a separate study from researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health, whole
www.naturespathways.com

grains were found to protect women against diabetes. Women who ate two to three servings of whole grains per day were 30 percent less likely to have developed type 2 diabetes than women who rarely ate whole grains. Whole grains should be consumed in place of refined carbohydrates, which can cause blood sugar levels to swing rapidly. Carbohydrates are refined to increase the shelf life of certain products and improve taste. During the refining process, nutrients needed to utilize the sugar are removed. Foods that contain refined carbohydrates include white bread, white rice and pretzels. And as noted by the United States Department of Agriculture, its safe to assume grain products are made with refined grains unless the packaging notes they are made with whole grains or whole wheat. Get a good nights sleep. People who fail to consistently get a good nights sleep may be increasing their risk of developing type 2 diabetes because a lack of sleep can make them more resistant to insulin. A 2012 study from researchers at the University of Chicago published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that sleep deprivation hinders the ability of fat cells to respond to insulin. The fat cells of study participants after they were deprived of sleep needed nearly three times as much insulin to regulate blood sugar as the cells needed on a typical nights rest. That dogged resistance to insulin over time can allow sugar and cholesterol to accumulate in the blood, increasing a persons risk of diabetes and heart disease as a result. Though the National Sleep Foundation admits sleep needs vary depending on a persons age and those needs are impacted by an individuals health and lifestyle, many experts agree adults need somewhere between seven to nine hours of sleep per night. Diabetes is a potentially deadly disease that can negatively impact a womans life in a variety of ways. But there are many methods for proactive women to reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes so they can live fuller, healthier and happier lives.

Triple your energy

By Joanne Flanagan

o you struggle with lack of energy on a daily basis and wish you had more? Have you tried various things (coffee, energy bars, etc.) with no results? Maybe its time for you to consider the effects of different external factors on your energy field. Electromagnetic fields can cause you to experience serious fatigue and stress. Luckily, there is a scientifically proven energy field regulator available called Equilibrex, which keeps your energy field in balance regardless of the stressors around you. Equilibrex was designed in laboratories with the highest degree of precision to duplicate the geometrical structure of the manifestations of higher energies constituting what is commonly known as life force. It acts as a constant pulse transmitter that generates a powerful energy field similar to the one created by the forces responsible for our vital energy. This process neutralizes potentially harmful molecular vibrations by magnifying stable energy fields. The key to Equilibrexs success lies in its mathematical blueprint. Equilibrexs design is a mathematical reproduction of the universal life force geometrical configuration. Its quandra-dimensional
ic C h ir o p ra ct ve, o h e lp s yo u MWe ll. e Fe e l a n d B

design acts as a transformer that intensifies ascending energies by magnifying specific frequencies. It was designed by physicists on the phi mathematical ratio. Everything in nature contains this ratio. Introduce Equilibrex to any living system, and the result is a more powerful, well-balanced and extremely healthy energy field. We all know the vital importance of a strong energy field. Modern science is now just recognizing its mere existence. A strong and balanced energy field leads to a healthy physical life, but more importantly, it insures that we are mentally ready to tackle all of our daily problems and exponentially better our lives. It has been discovered that when Equilibrex is introduced to a living system, its entire structure rearranges itself at the molecular level to become more ordered and closer to the structure of a purer element. In fact, extensive studies have shown that contaminated aqueous solutions rapidly transform and show amazing signs of purification within a very short amount of time. When the Equilibrex Pendant is worn anywhere on the body, the living system becomes balanced and enjoys vital energy. Combine this with meditation, proper nutrition, exercise and positive thoughts, and your energy will definitely triple!
Dr. Joanne Flanagan is a world renown expert in stress-handling technology, which includes physical, mental, emotional and environmental stressors. She has worked diligently in the past ten years in determining the nature of hidden stresses that destroy vitality. The result is her invention of the Equilibrex Pendant, which lessens the effects of stress on the bio-energy field surrounding the human body. For more information and research on stress and how to protect yourself from stress-related illnesses, see Dr. Flanagans website at www.equilibrex.com.

yowling, especially at night. Commonly, the development of hyperthyroidism is the cause of this bizarre behavior. Many hyperthyroid cats concurrently have kidney disease. This can cause protein loss through the urine and muscle loss as well. The presence of hyperthyroidism seems to mask the expression in lab work of the kidney disease. This is why it is important to recheck blood work and urine after the initiation of methimazole treatment. In addition, a few cats can develop a serious side effect of bone marrow suppression or intense facial pruritus (itching) from the medication. If this occurs, an alternative form of treatment will need to be considered. There does not seem to be an efficacious natural approach to manage hyperthyroidism. Although many are touted on the Internet, in the hands of this holistic author, I have yet to see any work. In my practice, we have tried Melissa, bugleweed and various homeopathics without success. In a Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association article, the authors proposed a correlation between consumption of

canned food and an increased incidence of hyperthyroidism. I have long been a proponent of wet food for cats. I surely see an increase in quality and longevity of life in cats who consume wet food. However, I have seen a great increase in the incidence of hyperthyroidism and would theorize it may be due to the increase in the consumption of canned diets. I would propose that the best way to try to prevent this and most pet disorders by natural means is with a speciesappropriate, fresh raw diet and vaccines only as a kitten. Select raw diets that have not been exposed to chemical toxins such as those in the lining of cans. Also, hyperthyroid cats should not eat fish, as it is high in iodine, which exacerbates the thyroid disease. Iodine is involved with thyroid hormone conversion. Be your best friends health advocate. Think prevention and be a good observer!

Get your summer sweat on!

By Brian Bankenbusch, CSCS, CES, PES

fter a long, cold winter, the weather is finally starting to warm up and you are ready to get outside. Summertime offers some great outdoor exercise opportunities. You can try biking, swimming or playing beach volleyball to get active or to push through a plateau you may be experiencing. But before heading out the door to trek that hiking hill, remember two things: make safety a priority and keep weight training in your schedule. Three important safety tips for exercising outside are: 1) protect your skin and eyes: 2) stay hydrated; and 3) know your route or surroundings. Sunscreen and sunglasses are a must when working out outside because the sun emits harmful ultraviolet rays. Its possible for anyone to get a sunburn, no matter if you have light or dark skin. You can even get burned on a cloudy day. Sunglasses are just as important as sunscreen for eye protection from the harmful UV rays. Always apply sunscreen about 30 minutes before you head outside, so it has time to absorb into the skin and protect it. If you are outside for a prolonged time, make sure to reapply the sunscreen.

Staying hydrated while working out is important, especially on hot days. The body loses a lot of fluids through sweat during exercise. It can happen even faster on a hot and humid day. It is important to drink at least 20 ounces of water before your workout, 2-3 ounces for every 20 minutes of exercise, and at least 20 ounces after each workout to prevent dehydration. Also, to help stay hydrated, avoid exercising during peak sun hours from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Knowing the bike or run route you are taking is important for safety. You dont want to be caught on a busy highway trying to cross traffic or avoid cars. There are many biking, running and walking paths that can be found all over the city and suburbs. If you plan on hiking, make sure you have a map and have some knowledge of the woods or trails you are exploring. The better prepared you are, the better your workout will be. Even though there are many fun ways to exercise outdoors, a majority of them are cardio-based and body weight exercises. Weight training is still an important part of health and wellness. A good weight training workout can be challenging outside, so dont forget to hit the gym 2-3 times a week for a weight training workout. All that hard work you put in during the winter months to sculpt those muscles shouldnt go to waste during the summer. The summer is a great time to try new activities to keep your fitness level up. You can finally get out of the gym for a while and get your heart pumping in the water, in the woods or in the neighborhood. Just remember to protect yourself against the weather and environment. Also, the gym should remain in your schedule during the week. Keep it a fun and safe summer, and keep those muscles strong!

Live a life where all things are possible!

By Jill E. Greinke, MSW, LCSW, SAC
You must unlearn what you have been programmed to believe since birth. That software no longer serves you if you want to live in a world where all things are possible. Jacqueline E. Purcell omeone once asked me what holistic psychotherapy meant, and he told me that the term holistic made him think about healthy eating as a way to take care of ones body. That statement is true, but there is a lot more meaning behind the word holistic. This word is used today in many settings, which can be very confusing. But, its basic meaning centers on the development of healthy mind, body and spirit, the basic components of holistic. Holistic psychotherapy integrates all three but with an emphasis on spirit. Obviously our bodies are important to us, for they hold our spirit: our essence, true being, authentic self or wise self. It has been said that we are divine beings having a human experience. So, we need our bodies to be healthy and strong to house our magnificent spirit! In order to really get mind, body and spirit, we can make an analogy to different components of a computer. Our bodies house our hardware our brain and software which we call our mind. The software allows us to create daily thinking, feelings and beliefs. These are programmed into us during childhood development as expectations, rules, shoulds and cannots that guide our behavior throughout our lives. They can also be the programming through which societal norms and conformity begin to drive us; generating certain uncomfortable emotions and thoughts, and leading us to act in ways we may feel do not align with who we really are. These programs are conditioning or learned behaviors that steer us day by day. Our ego (the part of the mind that mediates between the conscious and the unconscious, and thinks it is responsible for reality testing) incorporates all of our programmed conditioning. Though it will always be a part of us, it also thinks it is separate and
www.naturespathways.com

responsible for keeping us in line and often rooted in fear-based thinking, thereby limiting our thinking, beliefs and life choices. Most often, our ego ends up holding us back, even keeping us feeling trapped in habitual and repetitive patterns of thinking and doing. It is the conditioning that began early in life that continues to drive how we live our lives in the present, HABITUALLY running on and on like old, outdated programming. Since technology is upgraded daily, it is necessary for us to update our hardware and software on a regular basis to keep up. Both need to work together, but they also require an important and necessary component in which to run: the operating system. This connects and integrates all parts; without it, our computer would not be able to function. The operating system, our spirit, is the real force necessary to drive us. It is energetic current that supplies our hardware with the precise amount of energy to run meticulous software programs, aiding us in creating whatever we want to create and living out our lives consciously with the absence of any fear and previous conditioning. This energy moves quickly, does not stay stagnant and needs to flow freely from programming set from birth and throughout our lives. Mind-body-spirit therefore incorporates the spirit as our own inner guidance for us to do whatever it takes to live authentically, innovatively and creatively. Psychology actually means the study of spirit. Holistic psychotherapy incorporates that as a key element in helping individuals to utilize specific techniques, aiding all to live as whole human beings with a greater sense of Who am I and why am I here? and as authentic beings with knowledge that all things are possible!

Meditation Q&A
By Master Jesse
Question: What is meditation? Answer: According to the Oxford Dictionary, meditation is continuous thought on one subject; a period of serious and sustained reflection or mental contemplation. Question: Why does one meditate? Answer: There are many reasons; the most common of which is for spiritual practice. For example, when a Catholic repeats one prayer over and over, or uses a rosary, or when a Buddhist uses prayer beads as one chants mantras over and over, focused totally on one short prayer. In other applications, a mathematician may focus on the smallest number in order to see the bigger picture. Most inventions have come about by someone identifying a need, and then focusing on a way to fulfill it. Playing chess or even a video game can be a meditation. Meditation can be used for many reasons: stress relief, to know ones self, to know ones infinite mind, to find solutions, to contemplate ones daily endeavors and, my personal favorite, to seek to know the creation by knowing ones self. Question: How do I meditate? Answer: There are thousands of ways to meditate. It can be confusing for the beginner. In picking a method of meditation, you should look for simplicity. It is said Buddha practiced 1001 methods; many were quite complex and did not render the results he sought. He inevitably returned to the first form of meditation he practiced, the simplest form: to focus on ones breath and nothing else. Over many years of meditating only on his breath, the man called Sardath became The Buddha. I have used this method for over 30 years. In that time, I have had many visions and great epiphanies, yet I have not yet mastered the breath. For me, meditation is part of my life, my work and my spirituality. No matter why you choose to meditate, you should know the technique may be simple. That does not mean it is easy. Nor does it mean you will get results in one week. But if you meditate every day for 15 minutes,

you will realize results in a few weeks. Now lets begin. First, you will need a quiet place, and it should be softly lit. Now you will need to sit on the floor with your legs folded one under the other. WAIT! Sitting on the floor like that really hurts. Is that really necessary? Some teachers say it is. I had a friend who learned to meditate in India. She insisted you sit on the floor, legs folded one under the other. All the temples in India do it. And its also the spiritual way. With all due respect to my friend and the temples, I am an American born and raised in the USA. Here, we grow up sitting on chairs and are not accustomed to sitting on the floor for long periods of time. So its ok to sit on a chair or stool. One should feel comfortable and safe. Lets get back to our process. Sitting with your back straight and direct, head forward and hands to either side, exhale, emptying your lungs of old gas. Inhale slowly. As the inhale is complete, begin the exhale, slowly. The full cycle should take nine to ten seconds, from inhale to exhale. Thats the easy part. The hard part is to pay no attention to any other thought, no matter what else is in your head. It can be quite a challenge, but in time, if you persist just for 15 minutes a day, you will succeed and find peace through meditation.

Kids vitamin deficiency signs

healthy diet is supposed to provide all of the essential vitamins and minerals necessary to sustain a body. But thanks to finicky eating habits and limited choices, many children are not getting the vitamins and minerals they need to grow up healthy. Although many foods are fortified with certain vitamins, they still may not be enough to provide the level of nutrition required for a growing body. Parents may be well informed of a childs needs of vitamin C to boost immune system function, but they may not be as readily informed about other vitamins that are essential to human health. Vitamin A: Vitamin A promotes a healthy immune system and proper eyesight function. A child lacking in vitamin A may be tired and weak and experience weight loss. Other symptoms include dry eyes, skin scaling and respiratory infections. Vitamin B6: Hyperactivity and impulsiveness are often blamed on an underlying medical condition, such as ADHD. But such conditions may be the result of a deficiency in vitamin B6. Vitamin B12: Nervous system function is largely governed by proper levels of vitamin B12. Children who do not receive enough vitamin B12 may experience weakness, insomnia, edema and abdominal pain. Vitamin D: Vitamin D is called the sunshine vitamin because it is produced in the body after exposure to the sun. Children who spend many hours indoors or wearing thick layers of sunscreen may not get enough vitamin D. Irritability, muscle cramps and even late teething could be tied to vitamin D deficiency. Parents should consult with pediatricians about the proper levels of vitamins children need.

Stop shortchanging your cat

By Jordan Stamper

e as humans have a tendency to view all cats the same way: low-maintenance, independent creatures that have limited loyalty, and dont really care for the same play or attention as mans best friends (dogs) do. At least thats what I thought when my husband and I welcomed a rescued feral kitten into the household. We expected a cat that was like the one I had lost two years prior: independent, unsocial, able to entertain itself and satisfied with one food forever. Boy was I wrong. Our new kitten expected to be entertained and kept busy 24/7. She cuddled into the laps of everyone she met and enjoyed being petted by new people. If she didnt get her way, she was vocal, not the silent, brooding type. And one day when she stopped eating her food, I blamed it on the heat of summer. But, it just turned out that she was really tired of the food I had been feeding her for months. Every cat has its own personality. While one cat may fall into the typical generalization people have for them, others might not. This means your plan for caring for your feline needs to be tweaked to meet their specific needs. Here are some tips that may make living with your cat a bit easier. 1. Your cat may be a natural addict when it comes to food, but its body is primed for variety in its diet. Start when they are young, or when you first bring them into the household, by offering new foods, especially new proteins. Switching up their diets will keep them from developing allergies in the future and will keep their intestines in shape to continue to absorb all their needed nutrients. Also experiment with new textures, as cats can be an addicted to more than just flavors. 2. Cats need entertainment and exercise just like dogs. Experiment with a variety of toys wand toys, catnip-stuffed toys, Turbo tracks, bouncy balls, laser lights, etc. to get your cat moving. Getting them active and into a routine of moving can
www.naturespathways.com

3. Cats love a routine. Try splitting the daily feeding into two meals

help prevent weight issues in the future.

(at times you can manage every day). This way you can make sure your cat will be hungry when food goes down, and you can control how much food your cat gets. Timed feedings can help fight pet obesity, and the routine helps establish a pattern of normality, so if something is wrong with your pet, the disruption in routine can help you spot that. 4. Introduce grooming tools early, and make it a party! Long-haired and medium-haired (even the short-haired ones!) benefit from regular brushing. With some cats, this can be difficult. If your cat is hesitant to be groomed, let the cat investigate the brush on its own with sniffing and touching, and reward your cat for going through these measures by giving a tasty treat. By slowly introducing the brush, your cat might be more willing to accept it in the future, and then it will be much easier to maintain a neat coat. 5. Find a pet sitter. Cats may seem independent to the point that if you go out of town for the weekend, you can just leave out food and water. Unfortunately, events may happen in the home that may be dangerous, or frightening, to your cat. Find a family member, neighbor, or even a professional pet sitting service that can stop in at least once a day to make sure all is well with your cat and the home. If your cat is more social, find a sitter that can stop in more often, or one that can even spend the night. This will help to reduce anxiety in your feline companion, as well as keep an eye out for the home.

Pu-erh tea capturing attention for health benefits

By Jennifer Nowicki

u-erh tea is a variety of fermented dark tea produced in Yunnan, China. Fermentation is a tea production style in which the tea leaves undergo microbial fermentation and oxidation after they are dried and rolled. This process is a Chinese specialty called pu-erh, named after the trading post for dark tea during imperial China. This teas cultivation can be traced as far back as the Han Dynasty (202 BCE-220 CE) and was made from the leaves of the broad leaf tea plant, Camellia sinensis assamica. Pu-erh tea has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for generations to inhibit internal dampness (a term used in Chinese medicine to describe a buildup of internal energy due to the spleens inability to transform energy that it receives from the stomach) and to invigorate the activity of the spleen and stomach. Other traditional uses include removing toxins from the body, curing dysentery, losing weight, improving eyesight, promoting blood circulation and reviving those who drank too much alcohol. For hundreds of years, pu-erh tea has had a place in the practice of traditional Chinese medicine. It is most often consumed at meal times to aid in digestion and blood circulation, but pu-erh tea has also been used to treat many other conditions throughout the years. Pu-erh tea has even been marketed as a weight loss aid recently. While studies have not been able
Natures Pathways | June 2013

to conclusively prove that pu-erh tea helps in weight loss, rats given a pu-erh diet have been subject to weight loss. More significant, however, have been the lower cholesterol levels discovered in these studies. There is interest in using pu-erh tea for lowering cholesterol because, unlike other teas, it contains small amounts of a chemical called lovastatin. Lovastatin is a prescription medicine used for reducing cholesterol. Investigators think that bacteria that sometimes inhabit pu-erh tea may somehow make the lovastatin in the course of their normal life cycle. Animal research suggests that pu-erh tea might decrease certain blood fats called triglycerides as well as bad low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. It might also increase good high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. One influential study cited in the Journal of Gerontology tested both fermented and nonfermented pu-erh tea on the blood lipids of rats. The study concluded that fermented pu-erh tea lowered the lipids or fats in the blood of rats. The research in the study determined that pu-erh tea can be used to lower the risk of cardiovascular disorders because it reduces blood lipids. Pu-erh tea also contains antioxidants and other substances that might help protect the heart and blood vessels. The health benefits of pu-erh tea have captured the attention of the academic and medical community in recent years.

While the evidence has been promising, more exploration is warranted to yield conclusive results. Meanwhile, despite the presence of chemical constituents in tea that are attributable to good health, the ritual of tea brewing, the inhaling of the tea aroma, and the tasting of the fragrance and smoothness of pu-erh tea is likely to slow down your heart rate, calm your nerves and reduce your stress.

Acu reiki
New term, same energy
By Best Health Option

nergy work has been around for hundreds, even thousands of years. Acupuncture and reiki are popular forms of energy work, and although the techniques in which they mobilize energy differ, their relationship to that energy is similar. Similar enough, in fact, that if you were to use both techniques simultaneously, you may have more intense results. Reiki (rei = higher power + ki = life force) is a healing practice that originated in Japan, based on the idea that

there is a universal (or source) energy that supports the bodys innate energetic healing abilities. Reiki is an ancient laying-on of hands energy work technique that uses the life force energy to help balance the subtle energies within our bodies. Practitioners seek to access this energy, allowing it to flow to the body and facilitate healing. The practitioner is like a conductor, channeling the energy through their hands to the recipient, enabling the body to accelerate its own

healing process, and directing energy where the body needs it. Reiki addresses stresses of the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual imbalances. Traditional Chinese medicine explains that channels of energy (qi) run in regular patterns throughout the body and over the bodys surface. These energy channels, also referred to as meridians, are like rivers flowing through the body to irrigate and nourish the tissues, organs and spirit. An

Social isolation and hearing loss

By Dr. Douglas Kloss

o you or someone you love avoid social situations due to hearing loss? Many people choose not to engage in social activities because they are embarrassed by their hearing loss. Some folks who cannot understand what others are saying, especially in situations with significant background noise, would rather avoid those situations than have to ask others to repeat themselves. This starts the process of social isolation and can contribute to loneliness and depression. Hearing loss is one of the most common disabilities as we get older. The loss of hearing due to age is called presbycusis. This type of hearing loss generally occurs gradually, and many people feel they hear just fine, when in fact, they have a significant loss of hearing sensitivity that affects their social interactions and quality of life. One sign of hearing loss is when people say that they hear someone talking but they cannot understand what is being said. This type of comment is typical of someone who is losing their high frequency hearing due to aging process. When we lose hearing due to age, it is common for high frequencies to be affected first. Since many consonants in the English language are high frequency sounds, the inability of someone to hear these particular sounds interferes with speech understanding. Low frequency sounds are where vowels are located in our language and the power from our speech is low frequency power. Oftentimes, speaking louder to someone with a hearing loss wont make things more understandable because the low frequency vowels just get louder and mask the high frequency consonants.

What can you do?

This first step is to identify the problem. Get your hearing evaluated by an audiologist. Audiologists are trained to identify and manage hearing loss. Management of hearing loss may include referral to an ear, nose and throat physician, commonly known as an otolaryngologist. Once any medical issues are resolved, hearing aid amplification may be an option. Hearing aid amplification is an excellent option for someone with hearing loss due to age. As we gradually lose our hearing, our brain will re-wire itself to make maximum use of the sound it is provided by our ears. We actually hear with our brains, our ears are just the way the sound
24
Natures Pathways | June 2013

gets in. Over time, it is difficult for some to notice or admit that they are not hearing well anymore. Once hearing aids are fit, the brain will need to re-wire itself again to adjust to the sounds that have been missing for quite some time. This process can take up to six months. Most folks will notice significant improvement within the first 30 days. Sometimes people are not comfortable with the cosmetic appearance of hearing aid amplification. That has changed with the invention of open-fit or thin-tube fittings. Cosmetic problems are easily overcome today. There are two styles of hearing aids that are nearly invisible when worn. Todays hearing aids are sophisticated electronic devices. The overwhelming majority of hearing aids dispensed today are digital hearing aids that allow for significant adjustment to meet the users sound quality concerns. Digital hearing aids are a huge advantage compared to analog hearing aids of the past. Todays hearing aids can have different settings for different environments, can be completely automatic, can have remote controls that allow for user adjustments and can be connected via Bluetooth technology to televisions and telephones. Some hearing aids also have rechargeable batteries and actually communicate with each other to provide the best sound to the user in varying listening environments. One of the most important factors in determining hearing aid success is matching the correct set of hearing aids with an individuals hearing loss and lifestyle. Digital hearing aids that are the wrong style or technology for a particular hearing loss will still perform poorly. It is vital that your level of hearing aid technology and lifestyle match your hearing loss to get the maximum benefit. Audiologists are the most highly trained individuals to perform these services. Yes, hearing loss can lead to social isolation. But, there are remedies for hearing loss that work well and can bring your social interactions back to life. Do not let your hearing loss affect your quality of life anymore!

obstruction in the movement of these energy rivers would than act like a dam that causes stagnation and blockage, backing into or depleting other channels. Acupuncture is considered a method of facilitating the body to promote its own natural healing ability and to improve functioning by inserting needles into specific points to illicit and move energy. Earth has its own energy field and emits an energy wave, which, once activated, can be measured and observed. Western medicine acknowledges that even small emissions of frequency promote nerve regeneration, bone growth, ligament healing and capillary formation. Science has researched the hands of reiki practitioners as they are treating and has reported various amounts of measurable energy. The growth model theory supports the idea that electro-physiological characteristics, when affected by the bio-electric field, promote cell growth. The suggestion is made that points on the meridians come from these small group of cells. Reiki uses Earths energy field to connect subtle vibrations to areas of obstruction, and acupuncture utilizes specific meridians and specific acupuncture points to influence the flow of energy to unblock the obstructions identified by assessment. Both reiki and acupuncture help the body self-correct imbalances in digestion, absorption, energy production and in the circulation of energy. When most patients seek treatments, their energy patterns are out of balance. A reiki practitioner identifies the area of obstruction

and uses their hands to move the energy, allowing it to go where it needs to. An acupuncturist identifies which meridian requires needles to illicit the energy so it can flow freely. By combing acupuncture and reiki (acu reiki) simultaneously in a treatment, it would theoretically promote improvement in energy and biochemical balance. Acupuncture and reiki treatments result in stimulating the bodys natural healing abilities. These two techniques are likely to enhance one another in supporting the patients energetic system and strengthening the self-healing capability of the patients mind, body and spirit. The subtle identification and movement of energy by the reiki practitioner over a needle that is already stimulating the arrival of energy in a particular channel or meridian would promote a more intense reaction by the body, heightening the self-healing process, and, ultimately, the qualitative response of the patient would be more profound.

any people do not know that Growing Power is a land trust. As such, we are committed to investing in our land for the overall betterment of humankind. We see the practice of sustainable agriculture as a key component of good land stewardship. We believe this land is our land, and together we are responsible for how it is used. We are always looking for land to grow more food for our community. More land in sustainable production means more good food for all! At Growing Power, we are very committed to transforming the local and regional food system. We aim to grow enough food so that 10% of the food consumed in our city comes from food grown within our local and regional area. Growing Power will lead this effort and invites the greater community to join us! We are in need of more land for sustainable food production and ask our supporters to consider donating any of the following to us: Land for sustainable agriculture purposes, including composting (see the Department of Natural Resources website for more information about requirements: www.dnr.wi.gov). Cargo vans (for produce) and passenger vans (for farm workers). Dump truck. Large capacity generator. Growing Powers mission is to support people from diverse backgrounds, and the environments in which they live, by helping to provide equal access to healthy, high-quality, safe and affordable food for people in all communities. In our efforts to fulfill our mission, we ask for your support to help acquire the resources needed to grow more food. I believe our food is our medicine. I believe this so much that I am leading a study that will compare the nutritional quality of local and sustainably grown food with conventionally produced food. We know fresh produce begins to lose its nutritional value from the moment it is harvested. The longer distances produce must travel, the more nutritionally deficient it becomes. Help us

Colon cleanse Q&A

By Kristina Amelong

olon cleansing has the potential to prevent colon cancer, improve energy, reduce fatigue and promote weight loss. News of these benefits is motivating health seekers to learn more about the colon cleanse, as well as their colon health. The following Q&A covers some basic information that you may find helpful on the topic:

clog the colon, destroy the healthy mucosal barrier of the colon, and encourage the growth of unhealthy bacteria and parasites all increasing the risk of colon cancer.

Why should I work to keep my colon healthy?

Many people focus on their outward health and forget that colon health is essential to ones overall well-being. Of cancers affecting both men and women, colorectal cancer (cancer of the colon and rectum) is the second-leading cancer killer in the United States. In 2009, 136,717 people were diagnosed with colorectal cancer, and 51,848 people died from it in our country. Colon health cannot be ignored. Besides pursuing colon health for the prevention of colon cancer, having a healthier colon can promote weight loss, increase energy, reduce fatigue and inflammation, enhance immunity and even cure headaches. However, the answer is not getting the quick fix with colon cleanse pharmaceuticals. While many prescribed drugs can reduce or even eliminate symptoms of colon problems, they do not address a fundamental lack of colon health.

Locally Owned Since 1999 Did you know that colon cleansing has fantastic benefits? Did you know that you can completely cleanse your colon in the privacy of your own home? Did you know that therapeutic grade essential oils offer more benefit when taken in the colon, especially for health issues like Lyme disease, cancer, fibromyalgia and prostate issues?

Why am I at risk for colon cancer and other colon problems?

Our food has changed in leaps and bounds in a relatively short time, while our digestive system has not been able to keep up. For thousands of years we survived on basic foods such as fruit, game meat, nuts and wild vegetables. However, in the last hundred years particularly, food has changed drastically: grain-fed meats, foods fried in trans fats, sugar-laden treats and dairy produced with hormones now line the shelves of many grocery stores. These unnatural foods, loaded with hundreds of toxic chemicals, can

Cinnamon
(Cinnamomum zeylanicum)

innamon comes from the bark of trees native to China, India and Southeast Asia. A popular cooking spice in many cultures for centuries, cinnamon also has a long history of use as a folk or traditional medicine. For example, many ancient societies used cinnamon for bronchitis. Additional folk or traditional uses include gastrointestinal problems, loss of appetite and control of diabetes, as well as a variety of other conditions. Cinnamon bark is used to make powders, capsules, teas and liquid extracts. Although there are many kinds of cinnamon, Ceylon cinnamon (sometimes referred to as true cinnamon) and cassia cinnamon (also known as Chinese cinnamon) are the most familiar. High-quality clinical evidence (i.e., studies in people) to support the use of cinnamon for any medical condition is generally lacking. An analysis of five clinical trials concluded that cinnamon does not appear to affect factors related to diabetes and heart disease. Cinnamon appears to be safe for most people when taken by mouth in amounts up to 6 grams daily for 6 weeks or less. Some people may have allergic reactions to cinnamon or its parts. Cassia cinnamon contains coumarin, the parent compound of warfarin, a medication used to keep blood from clotting. Due to concerns about the possible effects of coumarin, in 2006, the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment warned against consuming large amounts of cassia cinnamon.

What the science says

Cinnamon should not be used in place of conventional medical care or to delay seeking care if you are experiencing symptoms that are of concern; this is particularly true if you have diabetes. Tell all your health care providers about any complementary health practices you use. Give them a full picture of what you do to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe care.

Colon Cleanse q&A continued from page 27

Colon cleansing is a process by which we can use in-home enemas, colon hydrotherapy, various dietary products or herbal remedies to reduce and eliminate toxins from our colons. By doing regular colon cleansing, we can address some of the causes of colon problems, not just the symptoms. Colon cleansing can remove toxins such as heavy metals, discarded hormones, carcinogens, unhealthy microbes, persistent organic pollutants and all of the other indigestible junk to which we subject our bodies.

How can I improve my colon health and reduce my risk of colon cancer?

medical establishment like to parrot that colon cleansing is not safe. In Great Britain, where practitioners carry out 5,600 colon irrigations each month, no serious side effects have ever been reported. Additionally, people who take regular in-home enemas make claims that enemas saved my life and coffee enemas cured my cancer. All of this anecdotal evidence speaking to the safety and effectiveness of regular colon cleansing is backed up by the fact that millions of enemas have been and are still given in hospitals, including rectal administration of medicines for cancer, arthritis and age-related macular degeneration, in order to avoid the normally functioning digestive tract.

How will I benefit from a colon cleanse?

How can I cleanse my colon?

The benefits of colon cleansing are myriad. Not only can you see short-term benefits such as increased energy, improved mood, decreased bloating, reduced gas and cured headaches, but a good colon cleanse can drastically improve your long-term health, as it may promote weight loss, lower blood pressure, improve blood sugar imbalances, lower cholesterol and address many other chronic illnesses. As a major part of the digestive system, the colon is essential to our health and well-being as we absorb as much of the healthy nutrients we can while disposing of toxins.

There are many options for colon cleansing. Colon irrigation through enemas or colon hydrotherapy allows us to literally wash out the colon by introducing filtered and temperature-regulated water. We can also briefly introduce healing substances such coffee, bifidonate bacteria and therapeutic essential oils to the colon to enhance the colon cleanse therapy. This colon irrigation can be done in a clinical setting, a colon hydrotherapy office or in the privacy of your own home through the enema series.

Health and wellness Q&A

By Karmen Nenahlo
Question: What are chia seeds, and how should they be used as part of a healthy diet? Answer: Most people know chia seeds as being responsible for producing a furry green friend called the Chia Pet. However, more recently this seed has gained popularity because of the health benefits it provides. Serving as an excellent source of omega-3s, fiber, protein, minerals and antioxidants, chia seeds can easily be incorporated into your diet in drinks, snack items, raw or combined with water to substitute for an egg. Because widespread consumption of chia seeds is relatively new, conclusive research on the exact health benefits is still developing. Emerging research with small sample sizes suggest possible cardiovascular benefits like lowered cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure, as well as the promotion of weight loss. Question: Should I be taking a probiotic supplement? Answer: There is no short and sweet answer to this question. Yes, probiotics are believed to aid in digestion. However, at this point in time, we lack enough scientific evidence to strongly promote or discourage their consumption. Beyond gastrointestinal issues, the use of probiotics for other ailments like colic, high cholesterol or immune system disturbances is currently under examination. With many different strains of probiotics, it is to be expected that each one affects the body differently. That said, taking a probiotic supplement with many different strains doesnt necessarily improve its efficacy, according to experts. Given the limited scientific backing, it is recommended that probiotic intake be reserved to those strains of bacteria that have been well studied (like Lactobacillus Rhamnosus or Lactobacillus GG) and probiotic products made from reputable brands. Question: Do I really need to sweat profusely to get in a good workout, or is this another fitness myth? Answer: Myth all the way! Sweating and the overall quality of your workout do not go hand in hand. Workout quality depends on the type of activity, the intensity and the duration. Sweating is simply a way for your overheated body to cool itself thats it. Some people sweat from the very beginning of physical activity and others end up doing 30 minutes before the first bead hits the floor. Your environment, specifically the temperature and humidity, certainly plays a role, but the amount you sweat is very individualized as well. When youre physically active, your core body temperature rises and the body looks for an easy way to dissipate heat. So, the next time youre sweating and someone mentions that you look hot, just tell them, Really, I was just starting to get cool.

Helping legs look and feel better

f you suffer from discomfort due to varicose vein disease, Bruce W. Cardone, M.D., and his dedicated staff at Vena The Varicose Vein Institute want to get you on the path to healthy legs! Varicose veins affect 50 percent of women ages 40 to 50 years old and 25 percent of men ages 30 to 40, and become more common with age. By age 70, 75 percent of women and 50 percent of men show some sign of varicose vein disease. Symptoms can include pain, aching, fatigue, itching, burning, tingling, swelling, cramping, restlessness and throbbing. Varicose and spider veins get worse with time, so the earlier they are treated, the better off youll be. Patients who visit Vena The Varicose Vein Institute will have a complete history taken along with an exam. Proper diagnosis is critical, Dr. Cardone says, and thats where ultrasound comes in. Dr. Cardone is board certified in diagnostic radiology and is a diplomate of the American Board of Phlebology. He is fellowship trained in diagnostic ultrasound and holds special credentials from the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography as a registered vascular technologist (RVT). Treatments at Vena The Varicose Vein

Natures Pathways | June 2013

Institute include several non-surgical, minimally invasive options. One is endovenous laser or radiofrequency ablation, which Cardone says is the treatment of choice for reflux of abnormal major superficial venous structures. Patients are awake during the treatment and afterwards wear medical-grade compression stockings for up to a week. Normal activity can be resumed after that. The number of endovenous treatments needed varies, depending on severity. People with large bulging veins may need additional treatment, such as microphlebectomy. And a procedure called sclerotherapy is used for smaller veins (including spider veins) that are visible to the naked eye. These procedures are safe and generally cause minimal discomfort, according to Dr. Cardone. Treatments are most often covered by insurance if Dr. Cardone confirms by ultrasound examination that the patient has varicose vein disease/reflux. In most cases, the ultrasound is covered by insurance because it is a diagnostic test. Patients are responsible

for deductibles and/or copays, of course. Regardless of which procedure you may end up receiving, the first step is making the call. You do not have to suffer from varicose vein disease, Dr. Cardone says. Advances in diagnosing the problem, as well as in the technology used to treat it, make treatment easier and more affordable than ever. You owe it to yourself and your legs to take the next step today!
