SUBJECT: Chapter 7

Chapter 7 has been revised to show current Mn/DOT policy regarding pavement design and has been converted to dual units. Substantial changes have been made to bridge approach panel and flexible pavement design. A list of major changes made to the chapter is also attached. INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Major Changes to Road Design Manual Chapter 7 (Dual Unit) September, 2006
1. Header Deleted word (English), changed date from June 2001 to September, 2006. 2. All measurements Changed from English to dual units: metric (English). 3. Section 7-2.02 Changed title from (Storage Areas) to (Ramps and Loops with Storage Area.). Deleted the last two sentences. In the fourth sentence, LIT, L2KT, are replaced with LITH joint design. Required curb design of D424 was removed. 4. Figure 7-2.01 Note 4 added. 5. Figure 7-2.01B Note 4 added. 6. 7-2.03 Number 2: Supplemental reinforcement description replaced by branch connection joints description. Number 3: Letter H added to joint labels and added the E1-1 joints. Number 4: Replaced L1T joint with E1-1 or L2KTH joints. 7. Figure 7-2.03A Added detail for branch connection, with E1-1 joints. Added letter H (hot) for the longitudinal contraction joints L1TH and L2KTH. Removed the 1:50 slope from the left side of the Branch Connection detail. Changed the L3H joints to E-1 and L2KT on the right side of the major Fork and Branch Connection details. Joints in gore areas are labeled E1-1. 8. 7-2.04.01 A sentence defining an integral abutment is added. 9. 7-2.04.02 High and Low Abutments on Footing (Formerly Low Abutments). Combined the design recommendations for high and low abutment based on the new Standard Plans with all new text. 10. 7-2.04.03 Integral Abutments (Formerly High Abutments). All new text. 11. 7-2.04.04 In the second paragraph, the second sentence has a new text (For concrete pavement) and phrase about passive soil pressure keys is removed. Last three sentences are new. In the third paragraph the third and fourth subparagraphs are reworded. In the forth paragraph, the second subparagraph, the sentence about flume length extension was added. In the fifth paragraph second subparagraph (Compute all quantities required for constructing ) was deleted and replaced with the text that was formerly No. 3. Old No. 4 was deleted (direction on using a concrete base with bituminous overlay). The reference to Specification 3725 was added. In new No. 4 the reference to L1T and L2KT was replaced by the reference Mn/DOT Standard Plans. Old No. 5 was deleted. 12. Figure 7-2.04A Case D (Flat Grade) is removed. Added two unnumbered notes. 13. 7-3.01 References to Figures 7-3.01B, 7-3.01C, and 7-3.01D are removed. References to deep strength bituminous pavement design were deleted. 14. Figure 7-3.01A. (Combined old Figures 7-3.01A and 7-3.01B) Select Granular layer removed. Roadbed subcut and Variable median direction added. Added notes 8 and 9. 15. Figure 7-3.01C (Deep strength Bituminous Pavement Design 2-Lane and Multi-Lane Undivided Highways), and Figure 7-301D (Deep Strength Bituminous Pavement Design Multi-Lane Divided Highways and Freeways) deleted because deep strength bituminous pavement design has been discontinued. 16. 7-4.01 References to figures 7-4.01A through 7-4.01I replaced by reference to figures 7-4.01A through G. 17. Old Section 7-4.03 (Shoulder Rumble Strips) deleted and moved to Chapter 4. 18. Figure 7-4.01A Aggregate shoulder placed over slope dressing past the P.I. Grading grade removed from Section on Tangent. References to Class of shouldering and Specification numbers are removed. Changed note 1 to show a new location of shoulder rumble strip policy and added note 2. Added 1:1 slope.

Shoulder width increased to 12 ft. Added (Aggregate Base) to With Bituminous Base detail. Deleted (D424 or B624 Curb and Gutter) and replaced by (Design B or D Curb and Gutter). 26.
