The route to Westminster Abbey was by The Mall, Admiralty Arch, south side of Trafalgar Square, Northumberland Avenue, Victoria Embankment, Bridge Street, north and west sides of Parliament Square and Broad Sanctuary to the west entrance of Westminster Abbey. The Peers and Peeresses, in their robes, and others invited by Command of the Queen to be present at the Solemnity of Her Majesty's Coronation in Westminster Abbey, were conducted upon arrival to the places reserved for them. The doors of the Abbey were closed at 8.30 o'clock. The Great Officers of State and the Lords appointed by Her Majesty to bear the Regalia, in their robes, the Archbishops of Canterbury and York, the Bishops who supported Her Majesty, and those who bore the Bible, the Chalice, and the Paten, all vested in their copes, the Archbishops wearing their mitres, and the other persons appointed to take part in Her Majesty's Procession, assembled in the Vestibule without the West Door of the Abbey.

THE PROCESSION OF HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN

Those taking part in the Procession formed up in the Vestibule at 10.45 o'clock, to await the arrival of Her Majesty. The Dean and Prebendaries of Westminster, the Representatives of the Church of Scotland and of the Free Churches, the Domestic Chaplains, and the Chaplains, took their stations in the Nave, immediately before the Officers of Arms, in readiness to lead the Procession. A Guard of Honour of the Queen's Company Grenadier Guards was mounted in the Vestibule, and the Queen's Company Colour was posted at the entrance to the Choir. Her Majesty the Queen, accompanied by His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, having proceeded in State from Buckingham Palace, arrived at 11 o'clock at the Royal Entrance to Westminster Abbey, where she was received by the Earl Marshal and the other Great Officers of State, the Lord bearing the Sword of State, the Archbishops of Canterbury and York, and the Bishops her Supporters. Her Majesty the Queen, and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, went to their retiring rooms. His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester* attended by his page Charles Brook, Esq., and the Peers and others who had arrived with Her Majesty but who did not take part in the Procession, were conducted to the seats reserved for them. The Peers and others who arrived with Her Majesty and who were to take part in the Procession formed up in their places in the Vestibule. At 11.15 o'clock the Queen, accompanied by His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, joined the Procession awaiting her in the Vestibule, and, entering by the West Door of the Abbey, proceeded in State through the Nave and the Choir to her Chair of Estate in the Area near to the Altar, the choristers (under the direction of Dr. William McKie, M.V.O., M.A., D.Mus., Organist of the Abbey) singing the Anthem / was glad when they said unto me, We will go into the House of the Lord, and the Queen's Scholars of Westminster School acclaiming Her Majesty in the customary manner. THE LAYING OF THE REGALIA UPON THE ALTAR
All being in their places, and the Bishops bearing the Bible Chalice and Paten having delivered the same to the Archbishop of Canterbury at the Altar, the Lords bearing the Regalia, except those who carried the Swords, came before the Altar steps and presented in order every one what he bore to the Archbishop who delivered it to the Dean of Westminster to be laid by him upon the Altar. The Lords who had borne the same went to their stations at the south side of the Area where, together with the Lords bearing the Swords (except the Sword of State), they remained until the Enthroning. THE RECOGNITION The Archbishop then came from the Altar to the east side of the Theatre, where he stood with the Lord High Chancellor, the Lord Great Chamberlain, the Lord High Constable, and the Earl Marshal. The Queen, rising from her Chair of Estate, proceeded to a station near to King Edward's Chair; and the Archbishop, facing towards the East, made the first Presentation. After which the Archbishop and the others with him, preceded by Garter King of Arms, went in turn to the South, West, and North sides of the Theatre, where the Archbishop repeated the same; and Her Majesty turned towards the people on the side at which the Presentation was made, they signifying their recognition and joy after each Presentation by a loud acclamation of

and the trumpets sounded after each Recognition. Her Majesty then returned to her Chair of Estate where she resumed her seat; and the Archbishop proceeded to the Altar. The Lord Great Chamberlain went to the west side of Her Majesty's Chair; and the Lord High Chancellor, the Lord High Constable and the Earl Marshal went to stations by the Northeast Pillar, where they remained until the Enthroning.
THE OATH
The Archbishop of Canterbury coming from the Altar and standing before the Queen, ministered the questions contained in the Order of Service. These questions having been answered by Her Majesty, the Archbishop returned to the Altar, and the Queen rising from her Chair and, supported as before, the Sword of State alone being borne before Her Majesty, went to the Altar, where, kneeling and laying her right hand on the Holy Gospel in the great Bible, tendered to Her Majesty by the Archbishop, she took the Coronation Oath, kissed the Book, and to a transcript of the Oath set her Royal Sign Manual, the Lord Chamberlain of the Household holding a silver standish for that purpose delivered to him by the Keeper of the Jewel House. The Queen having thus taken her Oath returned again to her Chair of Estate, where she took her seat.
THE PRESENTATION OF THE HOLY BIBLE
The Archbishop went before Her Majesty's Chair; and the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, receiving the Bible from the Dean of Westminster at the Altar, brought it to the Queen and presented it to Her Majesty, the Archbishop and the Moderator saying the words of presentation. Then the Queen delivered back the Bible to the Moderator who brought it to the Dean who reverently placed it again upon the Altar. This done, the Archbishop returned to the Altar and, the Introit being ended, began the Communion Service.
THE ANOINTING
After the conclusion of the Creed, the Queen kneeling at her faldstool, and the people kneeling in their places, the Archbishop began the hymn Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire, and the choir sang it out. Then, this hymn being ended, the Archbishop said the prayer of Consecration, after which, the Queen and the people standing, the choir began the anthem Zadok the Priest Whilst this anthem was being sung, the Queen, assisted by the Mistress of the Robes, was divested of her crimson robe by the Lord Great Chamberlain, who delivered the same to the Groom of the Robes. Her Majesty having also taken off her Diadem and the Collar of the Garter, delivered them to the Lord Chamberlain of the Household, and the Groom of the Robes received them also and carried them into Saint Edward's Chapel.

The Queen, assisted by the Mistress of the Robes, then put on a gown of white for her Anointing, and Her Majesty, supported as before, and attended by the Lord Great Chamberlain, the Sword of State being borne before her, then proceeded to King Edward's Chair, placed in the midst of the Area over against the Altar, and sat down therein. Meanwhile four Knights of the Garter brought a canopy of cloth of gold, delivered into their hands by Her Majesty's Officers of Arms, and held the same over the Queen for her Anointing. The Dean, having brought from the Altar the Ampulla and the Anointing Spoon, poured into the Spoon some of the holy oil: and the Archbishop anointed the Queen therewith, in the form of a cross. The Dean then returned to the Altar and replaced the Ampulla and Spoon thereon; and the Knights of the Garter withdrew the Canopy. Then the Queen rose and, proceeding to a faldstool placed between the Altar and King Edward's Chair, knelt there: and the Archbishop, coming before her, pronounced the Blessing. The Queen then returned to King Edward's Chair and resumed her seat therein. The Knights of the Garter delivered back the canopy to the Officers of Arms.
THE INVESTING WITH THE COLOBIUM SINDONIS, THE SUPERTUNICA, AND THE GIRDLE
Then the Queen rising again from King Edward's Chair, the Dean of Westminster and the Mistress of the Robes came before Her Majesty. The Groom of the Robes delivered to the Dean first the Colobium Sindonis, then the Supertunica, and finally the Girdle: and the Dean, assisted by the Mistress of the Robes, invested Her Majesty therewith, she first removing the gown of white, which the Groom of the Robes received and carried into St. Edward's Chapel. The Queen then resumed her seat.
THE PRESENTING OF THE SPURS
The Dean next brought the Spurs from the Altar and delivered them to the Lord Great Chamberlain who, kneeling, presented them to Her Majesty. The Queen laid her hand upon them in token of acceptance, after which the Lord Great Chamberlain, rising, delivered them again to the Dean and they were returned by him to the Altar.
THE PRESENTING OF THE SWORD AND THE OFFERING OF IT AT THE ALTAR
Then the Lord who carried the Sword of State and the Lord Chamberlain went into the Area and there the Lord Chamberlain received from the Keeper of the Jewel House the Sword for the Offering brought by him from St. Edward's Chapel. The Lord who carried the Sword of State delivered the same to the Keeper of the Jewel House and received from the Lord Chamberlain the Sword for the Offering. The Sword of State was carried by the Keeper of the Jewel House into Saint Edward's Chapel, and the Sword for the Offering was brought by the bearer thereof to the Archbishop at the Altar, who laid it thereon; and the Archbishop said the appointed prayer. After which the Archbishop took the Sword from off the Altar, and the Archbishop of York and other Bishops going along with him, he delivered the said Sword in its scabbard into the Queen's hands, and pronounced the words of presentation. Then the Queen, rising and going to the Altar, offered the Sword there, the Dean receiving it from Her Majesty's hands, after which she returned to King Edward's Chair and sat down again therein. The Lord who first received the Sword then went before the Altar and for the sum of one hundred shillings redeemed the said Sword, the Dean of Westminster delivering it to him: and having drawn it out of its scabbard, which he delivered to the Keeper of the Jewel House to be by him placed in Saint Edward's Chapel, he carried it thus during the remainder of the Solemnity. The Archbishop of York and the other Bishops who had assisted during the Presentation of the Sword and the Offering of it, returned to their places, and the Bearer of the Sword returned to his station on the right hand of the Queen.
THE PUTTING ON OF THE ARMILLS
Then the Dean of Westminster brought the-Armills from the Altar and delivered them to the Archbishop who, having put them upon Her Majesty's wrists, pronounced the words of presentation.

THE INVESTING WITH THE STOLE ROYAL AND WITH THE PALLIUM OR ROBE ROYAL OF CLOTH OF GOLD
The Groom of the Robes delivered the Stole, and then the Pallium, to the Dean of Westminster; and the Queen rising, the Dean, assisted by the Mistress of the Robes, invested Her Majesty therewith; and the Lord Great Chamberlain fastened the clasps of the Robe. The Queen then resumed her seat, and the Archbishop, standing before her, pronounced the words of presentation.
THE DELIVERY OF THE ORB
The Dean of Westminster then brought from the Altar the Orb: and the Archbishop received it from him and delivered it into the Queen's right hand, pronouncing the words of presentation After which Her Majesty delivered back the Orb to the Dean who, bearing it to the Altar, replaced it thereon.
THE PUTTING ON OF THE RING: AND THE GLOVE
Then the Dean took from the Altar the Queen's Ring and delivered it to the Keeper of the Jewel House to be brought by him to the Archbishop who, receiving it, placed it on the fourth finger of Her Majesty's right hand, and in so doing pronounced the words of presentation. And the Lord Woolton, appointed to present the Glove to the Queen, came from his place, conducted by one of Her Majesty's Officers of Arms, and kneeling before the Queen, presented the Glove and assisted Her Majesty to put the same on to her right hand. After which the Lord who brought the Glove returned to his place, conducted as before.
THE DELIVERY OF THE SCEPTRE WITH THE CROSS AND THE ROD WITH THE DOVE
Next the Dean brought from the Altar the Sceptre and the Rod, and the Archbishop, receiving them from him, delivered the Sceptre into the Queen's right hand, and the Rod into Her Majesty's left hand, saying thereafter, in each case, the words of presentation. Then the Archbishop and the Dean returned to the Altar.
THE PUTTING ON OF THE CROWN
The Archbishop, now being at the Altar, took Saint Edward's Crown into his hands, and setting it before him again upon the Altar said the prayer of Benediction, beginning with the words O God the Crown of the faithful, which being ended, he left the Altar and, together with the Archbishop of York and other Bishops, went before the Queen seated in King Edward's Chair. Then the Dean brought the Crown from the Altar, and the Archbishop, receiving it from him, reverently placed it upon Her Majesty's head. At the sight whereof all the people, with loud and repeated acclamations, cried

the Princes and Princesses, and the Peers and Peeresses, putting on their coronets and caps of estate, and the Kings of Arms their crowns. And the trumpets sounded and, by a signal given, the great guns of the Tower and the guns in the Park were shot off. Then the Archbishop went on and said the prayer beginning with the words God crown you with a crown of glory and righteousness. and, that being ended, the choir sang the anthem Be strong and of a good courage
THE BENEDICTION
The Queen having thus been anointed and crowned, and having received the emblems of her Royal Estate, the Archbishop pronounced the Benediction; the Archbishop of York and all the Bishops, and the rest of the Peers and all the people, following every part of it with a loud and hearty Amen.
THE ENTHRONING
Then the Queen, arising from King Edward's Chair, and supported as before, with the Sword of State going before her, ascended the steps of her Throne, the Archbishop and the other Bishops Assistant, and the Great Officers and the Peers who had borne the Regalia, going with her. The Queen, having come to her Throne, was then lifted up into it by the Archbishops, the Bishops, and the other Peers, who thereafter stood round about the steps of the Throne; and the Archbishop, standing before the Queen, pronounced the Exhortation beginning with the words Stand firm, and holdfast

THE HOMAGE

The Exhortation being ended, Her Majesty delivered the Sceptre with the Cross to the Lord who had first borne it, to hold the same on her right hand, and the Rod with the Dove to the Lord who had first borne it, to hold the same on her left during the Homage: and she removed the Glove from her right hand and the Lord who bore the Sceptre with the Cross received it from Her Majesty. The Archbishop, ascending the steps of the Throne, knelt before the Queen, and placing his hands between the Queen's hands pronounced his words of Fealty; and the other Lords Spiritual, kneeling in their places, said their words of Fealty with him. The Archbishop then kissed Her Majesty's right hand; and retired. Next, His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, taking off his coronet and ascending the steps of the Throne, knelt before the Queen, placed his hands between the Queen's hands and pronounced his words of Homage; His Royal Highness rising then touched the Crown upon Her Majesty's head, kissed Her Majesty's left cheek, and withdrew. And after him the Duke of Gloucester, also kneeling before the Queen, in like manner performed his Homage: and so also the Duke of Kent performed his Homage. The other Peers of the Realm then did their Homage. The Senior Peer present of each Degree, in turn, putting off his coronet and ascending the steps of the Throne, knelt before the Queen and placed his hands between the Queen's hands. He then pronounced his words of Homage, and the other Peers of his Degree, taking off their coronets and kneeling in their places, said their words of Homage with him. After which they rose, and the Senior Peer touched Her Majesty's Crown and kissed Her Majesty's right hand, and then retired. At the conclusion of the Homage, the Queen again received into her hands the Sceptre and the Rod from the bearers thereof. While the Homage was being performed, Anthems were sung by the choir: and when it was ended, the drums beat, the trumpets sounded, and all the people shouted crying out:

Then the Archbishop proceeded to the Altar.
THE COMMUNION
Then was sung the hymn All people that on earth do dwell and the Queen rising, descended from her Throne and proceeded to the Altar, supported and attended as before, the Sword being borne before her. There, having laid aside the Sceptre and the Rod and having taken off her Crown (the Lord Great Chamberlain receiving them from Her Majesty into his hands and delivering the Sceptre and the Rod to the Keeper of the Jewel House, and the Crown to Garter, to hold for him), she knelt down. And the Duke of Edinburgh, coming meanwhile from his Chair, conducted by Norroy and Ulster King of Arms, went to his faldstool, set for him beside the Queen's, between the steps of the Altar and King Edward's Chair, and taking off his coronet, which the King of Arms received from him, he stood there, near to his faldstool. The hymn ended, and the Paten and the Chalice having been brought from Saint Edward's Chapel, the Bishops who had read the Epistle and the Gospel gave them into Her Majesty's hands: and she delivered them to the Archbishop, who reverently placed them upon the Altar, saying the prayer beginning with the words Bless, O Lord, we beseech thee, these thy gifts, after which, the Queen, still kneeling, made her Oblation, offering a Pall or Altar-cloth, delivered by the Groom of the Robes to the Lord Great Chamberlain, and by him, kneeling, to Her Majesty, and an Ingot of Gold of a pound weight, which the Treasurer of the Household delivered to the Lord Great Chamberlain, and he to Her Majesty; and the Archbishop received them severally from the Queen and placed them upon the Altar. Then the Queen rising, repaired to her faldstool beside the Duke's, and there remained standing. His Royal Highness advanced to the Altar and, kneeling, delivered to the Archbishop his Oblation, which the Archbishop received and placed upon the Altar. The Archbishop then said a prayer of Exhortation and pronounced a Blessing over the Duke. After which His Royal Highness, rising, returned to his faldstool beside the Queen's; and Her Majesty and His Royal Highness knelt down together. When the Archbishops, the Dean of Westminster, and the Bishops Assistant, had communicated in both kinds, the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Dean came to Her Majesty, and to His Royal Highness, and the Archbishop administered the Bread to them, and the Dean of Westminster the Cup.

Then the Archbishop went on to the Post-Communion, and after the Lord's Prayer and the Prayer of Oblation had been said, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh rose, and Her Majesty, again putting on her Crown and receiving back into her hands the Sceptre and the Rod, repaired to her Throne, supported and attended as before, and sat down therein. And the Duke of Edinburgh, putting on his coronet, returned to his chair, conducted as before. Then the choir sang the Gloria: and the same being concluded, the people knelt and the Archbishop pronounced the Blessing. After which, all the people standing, the choir sang the Te Dewn.
THE RECESS
Then the Queen, supported as before, the four Swords being borne before Her Majesty, descended from her Throne, crowned and carrying the Sceptre and the Rod in her hands, and went into the Area; and, the Archbishop preceding her, she entered Saint Edward's Chapel, passing by the south side of the Altar: and after her followed her Maids of Honour, the Mistress of the Robes and the Groom of the Robes, and after them the Lord Great Chamberlain and the Earl Marshal and the Lords who carried the Orb, the Spurs, and Saint Edward's Staff in the Procession (the Dean of Westminster delivering them to the bearers thereof as they passed the Altar); and lastly went in the Dean. The Queen, having come into the Chapel, delivered to the Archbishop at the Altar there the Sceptre and the Rod, and they were laid upon the Altar: and the Archbishop received the Crown from Her Majesty and laid it also upon the Altar. Then Her Majesty retired to her Traverse and, assisted by the Mistress of the Robes, and attended by the Lord Great Chamberlain and the Groom of the Robes, was disrobed of her Robe Royal and the other vestments which had been delivered to her during the Solemnities, and was arrayed in her Robe of Purple Velvet. In the meantime the Dean laid upon Saint Edward's Altar the Orb, the Spurs, and Saint Edward's Staff, receiving them from the bearers thereof, who forthwith (preceded by the Lords bearing the four Swords) withdrew from the Chapel and took their places in the Procession which was being formed in the Church. The Procession was formed in the same order as on entering the Abbey, except that the Bishops who had carried the Bible, the Chalice, and the Paten, the Moderator of the General Assembly and the Dean and Prebendaries of Westminster, remained in the Sacrarium, and the Representatives of the Church of Scotland and of the Free Churches, the Domestic Chaplains and the Chaplains, remained in their seats. The Four Swords were carried before the Queen, and were received near the west door by the Keeper of the Jewel House. Peers and Peeresses wore their coronets and Kings of Arms their crowns. Her Majesty being ready, and wearing her Imperial Crown, received the Sceptre with the Cross into her right hand and into her left hand the Orb from the Archbishop, who having delivered them to her, withdrew from the Chapel and took his place in the Procession: and the Lord Great Chamberlain did likewise; the Dean also withdrawing from the Chapel and going to the High Altar. Then, at a signal given by the Earl Marshal, the Procession moved forward, and the Queen, leaving Saint Edward's Chapel, whilst all assembled sang the National Anthem, proceeded in State, supported as before, through the Choir and the Nave to the West Door of the Church.
