2.5 Culture Generation EA
a Read the first two paragraphs of the article and answer the questions. What does EA mean? It means ethnically ambiguous. Why dont the old race labels work any more? b Read paragraph three. Whats going to happen in the next decade? c Read paragraph four. Complete the definition. A wigga is d Read paragraph five. Is Beyoncs hair naturally blonde? e Read paragraph six. Do you agree with the conclusions? Is your generation EA? Are there many mixed race students in your school? Do you know any wiggas?

Unit2

Forget black, forget white. EA is whats hot! 1 EA means ethnically ambiguous and describes a new generation. 2 If you talk to many young people today, it soon becomes clear that they dont think much about race or color. Mario, a student from Miami, says: Black and white people interact so much that we have lost the distinction. Rachel, a young nurse from Los Angeles, agrees. Trying to define people by the old race labels doesnt work any more. Look at the people around you. We are the new blended youth. 3 Mario and Rachel and millions like them are part of a new group called Generation Ethnically Ambiguous (generation EA for short). It reflects the demographic reality of countries like the United States and Britain. In the last census, seven million Americans identified themselves as members of more than one race, or members of no race. In ten years, mixed race is going to become the biggest ethnic minority group. 4 White teenagers are adopting black lifestyles and culture in fashion, looks, music, sports and language. Black urban culture has become everybodys culture, says journalist Paul McKenzie. It represents the triumph of the black community. In the past, a young white person who copied black style was sometimes called a wigga, a negative term back then. Now wiggas are every place. The extremely cool Justine Timberlake and Eminem are famous wiggas. 5 EA is very hot now. Beyonc, a black American, dyes her hair blonde, Cristina Aguilera accentuates her Latin American roots with her black hair, and multiracial bands like the Sugarbabes are more popular every day. 6 The barriers between black and white are disappearing. People dont make a distinction now because the distinction isnt thereculturally and sometimes even physically!, concludes Nick Leader. We are the new mix. We are the remix generation.

Most teenagers and young adults in the USA can t spend more than a day without sending a text message. Many teenagers now spend more time texting than kissing! Hollywood and Bollywood
Hollywood The first movie studio was established in Hollywood, north of Los Angeles, in 1911. Hollywood studios are all privately owned, and the worlds movie capital now produces about two hundred and fifty movies a year. A Hollywood movie can cost $150 million or even more. Top Hollywood stars salaries are incredible about $25 millionand they usually only make one movie at a time. Most Hollywood movies can be classified into: action, romance, comedy, science fiction, horror, drama, adventure or animation. are less than two hours without an intermission. use famous music and songs, but we dont see the singers or musicians and there is little singing or dancing. use top stars, except for a few independent movies. include different types of stories with lots of kissing. have a lot of action and blood.

Bollywood Bollywood is the name for the Indian movie industry located in the city of Mumbai (called Bombay until 1995). Bollywood started in 1911 with the first Indian silent movie. The industry boomed and today there are over two hundred and fifty movie theaters in Mumbai alone. Bollywoods movies are produced in a government-owned studio facility called Film City in the north of Mumbai. Bollywood makes over eight hundred movies each year. Bollywood stars are very popular and well-paid. Top stars often receive 40% of the U.S. $2 million it usually costs to make a Bollywood movie. Demand for these stars is so high that they often work on ten movies at the same time.

Most Indian movies follow a similar format called masala, the Indian word for a collection of spices. (This means that a lot of different things adventure, romance, comedy, etc.all happen in one movie.) are three to four hours long and include an intermission. include dozens of songs and dances featuring a hundred or so choreographed dancers. use top stars. have the story of boy meets girl, but no kissing. have a lot of action but no blood. have a happy ending.

The Pied Piper

1 Read the story and put these six pictures in order.

Five hundred years ago

in Germany, in a town called Hamelin by the Weser River, there was an invasion of rats. There were rats of every kind: big rats, small rats, black and gray; they were everywhere. They fought the dogs, killed the cats, bit the babies and ate all the food they could find. Terrified, the people of Hamelin went to see the Mayor. While they were in the Town Hall, a very strange man appeared. Tall and thin, with long blond hair and bright blue eyes, the man was wearing a tunic and a hat with a feather in it. I can make all the creatures living under the sun follow me so you will never see them again. People call me the Pied Piper! he said, touching his pipe. He continued: I am only a poor piper, but my pipe has freed other countries of plagues. If I can free your town of rats, will you give me a thousand guilders? Only a thousand? Well give you fifty thousand! exclaimed the Mayor.

So, the Pied Piper walked into the streets and took out his pipe. With three high notespeep, peep, peep!he woke up all the rats. Suddenly, there were hundreds of rats in the streets following the Piper. Big and small, fat and tall, young and old, mothers and their families, all the rats followed the Piper, dancing happily. He danced with them, playing his pipe and guiding them into the Weser Riverwhere they all danced in and drowned! When the Piper asked for his fifty thousand guilders, the Mayor told him that the town had no money. What is dead cannot return, laughed the Mayor. Well give you just fifty guilders. Good-bye! The angry Pied Piper walked into the streets and took out his pipe. With three high notespeep, peep, peep!he woke up all the children. Suddenly, there were hundreds of children in the streets, following the Piper. All the children of the town were there, dancing to the Pipers music. He danced with them, playing his pipe and guiding them up a mountain and into a cave. The cave closed and they disappearedforever! The people of Hamelin were devastated. They never saw their children again. If only they had kept their promise.

Aesop was a storyteller in Greece in the 7 Century B.C. His storiescalled fablesare all very simple, but each one has a moral. Even today, two thousand years after he died, Aesops fables can teach us important lessons. a _______ Once upon a time, there was a tortoise and a hare. As everyone knows, the tortoise is a very slow animal, one of the slowest. The hare, on the other hand, is one of the fastest. b _______ But the hare was not only very fast. He was also very proud. He said to the tortoise, Youre so slow. You take much longer to do everything. Im much quicker than you! c _______ And my legs and ears are longer, continued the hare. In fact, Im much more handsome and cleverer than you. d _______ In his very gentle, calm way, the tortoise said, Well, its true your legs and ears are longer, but if we race, I can win. e _______ You! Win?! The hare laughed. He was very rude. He thought he was the best animal in the whole animal kingdom. f _______ The hare ran so quickly he was soon far ahead of the tortoise, who was walking slowly behind. So the hare stopped for a rest under a tree ... where he fell asleep! g _______ Well, while the hare was sleepingand he slept much longer than he thoughtthe slow and steady tortoise just kept walking, slowly but surely. h _______ When the hare woke up and realized what had happened, he ran as fast as he could. But it was too late. The tortoise was already there at the finishing line, resting and calmly waiting for him.

2 Mark () the moral you think is best for the fable.
a b c d Not all the stories you hear are true. A small friend may be a very important friend. Dont trust someone who says he/she is perfect. Sometimes its better to be slow and consistent.

Household pets are common in America, Europe, and Asia. In the USA, dogs are favorites. A survey in 2004 found that 63% of the American households have dogs and 35% have cats. Fish, birds, turtles and small animals like rabbits and hamsters are also favorites. The British are especially fond of pets. Half of all the households in England have a pet, usually a cat or bird. But what do people from other countries think about pets? Australian Aborigines capture dingo (wild dog) puppies and raise them for a time before letting them go. In China and Hong Kong, cats are thought to bring good luck and are kept in stores as well as homes. The Japanese keep birds and crickets as pets. The Italians arent crazy about dogs but think cats make good companions. The Inuit Eskimo of northern Canada adopt bear cubs, foxes, birds, and baby seals. But animals are rarely kept as pets in Africa.
