The average American watches more than ten hours of sports-related television shows per week. 44% of households in the USA watch the Super Bowl. 70 million people go to professional baseball games every year. But looking for the remote control or waiting in line to buy tickets arent peoples only forms of exercise! Lots of people are adopting healthier habits. Around 28% of adults in the USA say they participate in organized sports regularly. About 40% do strenuous exercise at least three times a week, and more and more people work out in health clubs every day. Children are also involved: for example, 19 million children in the USA play in soccer leagues. However, a lot of people probably should do more exercise; 33% of Americans are overweight.

Forget black, forget white. EA is whats hot! 1 EA means ethnically ambiguous and describes a new generation. 2 If you talk to many young people today, it soon becomes clear that they dont think much about race or color. Mario, a student from Miami, says: Black and white people interact so much that we have lost the distinction. Rachel, a young nurse from Los Angeles, agrees. Trying to define people by the old race labels doesnt work any more. Look at the people around you. We are the new blended youth. 3 Mario and Rachel and millions like them are part of a new group called Generation Ethnically Ambiguous (generation EA for short). It reflects the demographic reality of countries like the United States and Britain. In the last census, seven million Americans identified themselves as members of more than one race, or members of no race. In ten years, mixed race is going to become the biggest ethnic minority group. 4 White teenagers are adopting black lifestyles and culture in fashion, looks, music, sports and language. Black urban culture has become everybodys culture, says journalist Paul McKenzie. It represents the triumph of the black community. In the past, a young white person who copied black style was sometimes called a wigga, a negative term back then. Now wiggas are every place. The extremely cool Justine Timberlake and Eminem are famous wiggas. 5 EA is very hot now. Beyonc, a black American, dyes her hair blonde, Cristina Aguilera accentuates her Latin American roots with her black hair, and multiracial bands like the Sugarbabes are more popular every day. 6 The barriers between black and white are disappearing. People dont make a distinction now because the distinction isnt thereculturally and sometimes even physically!, concludes Nick Leader. We are the new mix. We are the remix generation.

Hollywood and Bollywood
Hollywood The first movie studio was established in Hollywood, north of Los Angeles, in 1911. Hollywood studios are all privately owned, and the worlds movie capital now produces about two hundred and fifty movies a year. A Hollywood movie can cost $150 million or even more. Top Hollywood stars salaries are incredible about $25 millionand they usually only make one movie at a time. Most Hollywood movies can be classified into: action, romance, comedy, science fiction, horror, drama, adventure or animation. are less than two hours without an intermission. use famous music and songs, but we dont see the singers or musicians and there is little singing or dancing. use top stars, except for a few independent movies. include different types of stories with lots of kissing. have a lot of action and blood.
Bollywood Bollywood is the name for the Indian movie industry located in the city of Mumbai (called Bombay until 1995). Bollywood started in 1911 with the first Indian silent movie. The industry boomed and today there are over two hundred and fifty movie theaters in Mumbai alone. Bollywoods movies are produced in a government-owned studio facility called Film City in the north of Mumbai. Bollywood makes over eight hundred movies each year. Bollywood stars are very popular and well-paid. Top stars often receive 40% of the U.S. $2 million it usually costs to make a Bollywood movie. Demand for these stars is so high that they often work on ten movies at the same time.
Most Indian movies follow a similar format called masala, the Indian word for a collection of spices. (This means that a lot of different things adventure, romance, comedy, etc.all happen in one movie.) are three to four hours long and include an intermission. include dozens of songs and dances featuring a hundred or so choreographed dancers. use top stars. have the story of boy meets girl, but no kissing. have a lot of action but no blood. have a happy ending.

Household pets are common in America, Europe, and Asia. In the USA, dogs are favorites. A survey in 2004 found that 63% of the American households have dogs and 35% have cats. Fish, birds, turtles and small animals like rabbits and hamsters are also favorites. The British are especially fond of pets. Half of all the households in England have a pet, usually a cat or bird. But what do people from other countries think about pets? Australian Aborigines capture dingo (wild dog) puppies and raise them for a time before letting them go. In China and Hong Kong, cats are thought to bring good luck and are kept in stores as well as homes. The Japanese keep birds and crickets as pets. The Italians arent crazy about dogs but think cats make good companions. The Inuit Eskimo of northern Canada adopt bear cubs, foxes, birds, and baby seals. But animals are rarely kept as pets in Africa.
