And so it begins... A 21st Century education
Dear Editor: A little over 10 years ago, my husband and I moved to Claremont with our 2 young children. We have found many things that make Claremont special; Concerts in the Park, the homecoming parade, soccer games, the 4th of July and our outstanding public schools all contribute to making Claremont such a unique community. Four years ago, I was thrilled to be offered a teaching position at Claremont High. So, I am a Claremont resident, property owner, mom and teacher, and in all 4 capacities, I am urging all Claremont voters to support the Bond Measure CL in November. First, the state of California has steadily reduced our funding for several years, forcing our schools to do the same or more with less revenue. At the same time, the price tag of a 21st Century education is increasing. The standard complement of classroom support is not your parents (or our) classroom experience! Wireless Internet access, mobile laptop computers, iPod language labs, document cameras and scientific probes and sensors that interface with computers have become standard in a modern education. These are all expensive. Second, just looking at the high school, one can easily identify many of the facilities that are in need of repair or replacement. Decent locker rooms, a renovated theater and music quad and an air-conditioned gym are just a few examples of upgraded facilities that CUSD students deserve. Ironically, schools in affluent districts dont receive much of the extra funding that less well off schools receive and use for technology, facilities and supplemental programs. Perhaps this is because the state and federal bureaucracies suppose that an affluent community like Claremont is able to raise funds via bonds and parcel taxes, while less affluent communities are not. As a parent, I am pleased to report that the education my own 2 children have received, from Sumner to El Roble and now at CHS, has been outstanding. As a faculty member, I say without hesitation that my colleagues are the most committed, dedicated and well prepared group of teachers I have worked with in my 26 years in the classroom. At back to school night, I said to the parents in my 5th period class, Claremont High is the affordable private school option. I truly believe that we deliver the best K-12 education in the areaprivate and public. Maintaining CUSDs standard of excellence may not be possible without adequate resources, however. Again, I ask you to join me in voting yes on Measure CL to assure that our schools have what they need to continue to deliver a 21st century education to all our children.

Dear Editor: I returned home this week to find a No on CL flyer tucked in my front door. Like many others, I have questions about this measure, and thought that I could engage the opponents in some dialogue. Alas, those opposing this measure are hiding behind a cloak of anonymity. Its pretty difficult to reach out to a PO Box or the Claremont Taxpayers for Common Sense (whoever they are). I commend those who have attached their names to the support of the measure
so I can reach out to real people and ask them questions. I also applaud those with lawn signs, since ostensibly I could knock on those doors and ask them about the proposal. I challenge those opposed to the measure to come out from behind the curtain and reveal yourselves. Only then can we begin a meaningful debate about how we can assure the future support of our children and their schools.

Teenager agrees to plea bargain for burglary

he suspect involved in the home break-in on Morningside Drive pled guilty to 3 counts of burglary. Other charges of sexual misconduct were dropped as part of a plea bargain.
On May 8, the Claremont teenager entered the home during the early morning hours by climbing through a window. He Monday, September 27 A resident was arrested for drugs after police served a search warrant at his home in the 1600 block of Mural Drive. Police arrived at the home at 7 a.m. and found resident Dusten Anderson, 20, in possession of over 3 ounces of marijuana. He was arrested and remains in custody. A visitor at the home was also given a citation for possession of marijuana. He was carrying a small bag of marijuana in his pocket. Tyler Elias, 19, of Fontana was cited and released. *** A vehicle was burglarized in the 3300 block of Yankton Avenue. Sometime between 7:30 p.m. and 7:15 the following morning, a thief entered the unlocked car and removed property from the victims purse that was left on the passenger seat. A wallet, identification cards and credit cards were stolen. The burglar fled undetected.

was discovered inside the bedroom of a 7-year-old girl by the homeowner, who chased him from the house. The suspect, now 18, was arrested later that day at his home which is located less than a mile from where the break-in occurred. Police have not offered details about what the teen was doing inside the home or the girls bedroom. Claremont Police Lieutenant Shelly Vander said the suspect plead guilty to 3 counts of burglary after admitting hed entered the home on 3 separate occasions.
Charges of assault with intent to commit sexual battery and lewd or lascivious scts with a minor were dropped as part of the plea bargain, Lt. Vander Veen said. The teenager was sentenced on Wednesday, September 22 and remains in custody. Police were not informed of the nature of his sentence. His case was tried in Juvenile Court in Pomona, as he was 17 years old at the time of his arrest.

n Friday, September 24 a man was arrested for burglary after he was caught stealing quarters from various laundry facilities around the city.
The first reported burglary took place sometime between September 16 and 23 at Coin-Op Laundry at 1021 W. Foothill Blvd. An unknown tool damaged the coin lock boxes on 2 washing machines and approximately $150 worth of quarters were stolen. There were no witnesses or surveillance video. A second report came from the Padua Terrace Apartments at 633 E. Foothill Blvd. Sometime between September 6 and 28, a burglar used an unknown tool to force open the lock boxes on dryer and washing machines in the laundry room. Its unknown how much cash was stolen.

Police were able to nab the perpetrator when a witness caught him in the act on a third occasion. The police were called at 2:45 p.m. when the man was attempting to break into a coin box at a laundry room in the 700 block of Santa Barbara Drive. Responding to the call, Officer Isaac Reyes located a subject matching the description given by the witness walking on Regis Avenue, about 500 yards from the initial call. The suspect, William Nice, 48, of Mt. Baldy had in his possession a 16-ounce propane tank, a torch and receipts from a Coin Star machine. Mr. Nice was taken into custody and later identified by the witness as the suspect. He was arrested and booked on 3 counts of burglary.

Measure CL backed by community organizations
he Claremont Chamber of Commerce and Sustainable Claremont have recently given their endorsement of Measure CL.
Their announcements came on the heels of the Claremont Faculty Association (CFA) announcing its endorsement for the $95 million bond measure at the September 16th Claremont Unified
School District board meeting. Claremont Chamber CEO Maureen Aldridge said the Committee to Support Claremont Schools approached the organization to obtain its support. As a result, the Claremont Chamber took a vote on Measure CL this past Tuesday and had unanimous support from board members. If we have a good school district, thats good for the community at large, Ms. Aldridge said. Claremont will be a more desirable place to live and more
people will want to move here. That will benefit our businesses. Sustainable Claremont hosted representatives of the Committee to Support Claremont Schools at its board meeting last week. The committee made an hourlong presentation on Measure CL and also answered questions Sustainable Claremont members had. We had a lot of discussion about sustainability and asked a number of questions about that, said Freeman Allen,
member of the Sustainable Claremont board of directors. It was clear to us that the advice that theyre getting regarding sustainability within the district is going to be 1st rate. We were convinced theyd do a reasonable job. If Measure CL passes in November, approximately $14,395,562 will be used for sustainability efforts. Projects at all schools would include window and door

Quick thinking neighbors save residents from fire
n early morning fire in the 400 block of Greensboro Court startled neighbors who rallied together to help put out the blaze.
At around 7:40 a.m., Samantha Clifton, an 8th grader at El Roble Intermediate School, was on her way to school when she saw flames coming from her neighbors roof. Without hesitation, Samantha ran back into her house and told her mother to call 911. Samantha then went back over to the burning house and knocked on the front door. The resident, Karina Smith, was inside the home with her 2 children and 2 other visiting children when she was told about the fire. Her first instinct was to get the children out of the house and into a safe place. Ms. Smith then called 911 and moved her truck out of the driveway so emergency crews could better access the fire. Everyone inside the home was evacuated without incident. Meanwhile, next-door neighbor Don Richter said he could smell smoke for about 30 minutes while working in his front yard but assumed it was a brush fire. Mr. Richter saw his neighbors congregated in front of the home and then noticed smoke billowing from the roof. He ran over and grabbed a garden hose to try to put out the flames. A Claremont Police officer arrived at the scene and warned Mr. Richter that what he was doing was dangerous. I told him that fire is dangerous, Mr. Richter said, who continued spraying water on the home. The officer next helped him by loosening the garden hose so that Mr. Richter

could reach further into the backyard. Before firefighters arrived at the scene, Mr. Richter was able to put out all of the exterior flames. It all happened in less than 4 or 5 minutes, he said. The blaze began as a result of an electrical shortage in the garage, Los Angeles County Fire Captain George Vercamp said. It caused about $40,000 worth of structural damage to the garage and some smoke damage inside the home. Four fire engines from the Los Angeles County Fire Department arrived at the scene along with police, a paramedic squad and an ambulance. Ms. Smith said was amazed and grateful for how her neighborhood has rallied to support her family. Shes received a cake, a fruit platter, food and endless offers of support from her neighbors after the fire. Don and Samantha saved the day, Ms. Smith said. Claremont not alone in seeking new money for schools

Along with the CUSDs $48.9 million Measure Y bond that passed in June 2000, CUSD and its neighboring school districts have passed more than $750 million worth of bonds collectively over the past decade. The nearby districts include Bonita, Glendora, Pomona, Upland Unified School Districts, along with the Ontario-Montclair Elementary School District. According to TBWB Strategies partner Jared Boigon, the bond trends in California are the result of school districts no longer being willing to rely solely on state funding. Mr. Boigons firm is currently contracted to CUSD for the $95 million Measure CL bond and also worked with the district for Measure Y. Nearly every local school district in California has considered local funding measures in the past ten years. Dozens of districts in L.A. County alone have sought (and passed) multiple bonds and parcel taxes since 2000, Mr. Boigon said. TBWB Strategies is a partnering firm that works with city organizations and school districts to develop ways to pass bond and parcel tax measures. Since 2000, the firm has helped pass more than 90 measures. Mr. Boigon believes the current trends of California school districts utilizing bond measures will continue, particularly due to the instability of state funding. More than 3 months past its July 1st deadline, a 2010-11 California state budget has yet to be passed.

The State of California is an increasingly unreliable partner in education funding, Mr. Boigon said. Districts that rely on state funding alone wont be able to maintain high-end academic programs and up-to-date classrooms, labs and technology. The Bonita, Glendora, Ontario-Montclair, Pomona and Upland school districts have all passed at least 2 bond measures in the past 10 years. Pomona has received the most money locally from bond measures in the past decade with a $235 million Measure PS bond in 2008 and a $68 million Measure J bond in 2002. The district also passed 3 separate bonds in 1991, 1997 and 1998 totaling $147 million. Bonita and Upland Unified School Districts, along with the Ontario-Montclair Elementary School District, are the other 3 neighboring districts to pass bonds to-
taling more than $100 million since 2000. Bonita passed $140 million through Measure C in 2004 and Measure AB in 2008, Upland totaled $139 million through 2 Measure K bonds and Ontario-Montclair approved $134.6 million in bonds through general obligation bonds in 2000 and 2002. The totals do not include matching state money. All of the bonds were issued for the purpose of renovation, repairs and upgrades within the local school district. For some districts such as Pomona and OntarioMontclair, part of the bond money has been used to construct new schools. Youre seeing this trend throughout California: California communities with high-quality schools have all begun to recognize that local funding measures and private fundraising are both required to stay competitive, Mr. Boigon said. The current plan for Measure CL is to split up the $95 million in bonds into 4 main categories. The categories include repair and modernization ($48,412,886), technology ($22,189,862), sustainability ($14,395,562) and debt elimination ($10,000,000). The numbers are approximate figures. If Measure CL passes, CUSD will have passed $143.9 million in bonds within 10 years. The total will make CUSD 2nd to only Pomona Unified for the amount of bond measure funds local school districts have passed since 2000. Public to give input on citys sanitation survey

Sanitation analysis and public involvement An agenda item at the next city council meeting will allow residents to offer suggestions to the city on how the community and citizens can be involved in the current cost/benefit analysis of Claremonts sanitation services. The added agenda item comes on the heels of heavy criticism at the 2 latest council meetings over how city staff and the council have handled the matter. Several residents have come forward during public comment to chastise the city for lack of community involvement thus far. Some members of the community have expressed concern that this process has not included public input, Ms. Elderkin said. And this is a council very committed to public input. In February, the city council voted in closed session to do a cost/benefit analysis that would compare the citys

in-house operation with those of private companies. In response, staff sent out a Request for Proposals to 6 sanitation companies. Four of the 6 responded to the request. Residents interested in commenting on the publics role in the process are urged to attend the next city council meeting on October 12. There have been so many concerns raised that we really want the opportunity to have them raised as an agenda item, Ms. Elderkin said. Bernard Field Station land parceled The council approved the division of 11.45 acres of Bernard Field Station land into 4 separate parcels. The land is owned by Harvey Mudd College and is located north of the Foothill Boulevard frontage road between College and Dartmouth Avenues. The purpose of the subdivision, according to the city staff, is so Harvey Mudd can sell half the land to Claremont Graduate University. According to the staff report, neither academic institution has plans at this time to develop the property. Two of the parcels have been designated as buffer zones between the plot that may be developed in the future and the rest of the Bernard Field Station, indicating that development on the remaining 2 plots is a real possibility. As part of the approval, the city is asking for an agreement requiring a future developer to construct improvements such as street lighting, sidewalk, curb & gutter and underground installation of utilities. Also, the subdivider has been required to reserve a 10-foot private easement across the frontage of the parcel map, along both College Avenue and the Foothill
replacement, building systems upgrades, installation of solar panels and an irrigation central control system. Before Sustainable Claremont gave its unanimous approval last week, the group also questioned the Committee to Support Claremont Schools regarding how the $48.9 million Measure Y bond money was spent. Another concern for us was Measure Y responsibility, Mr. Allen said. The committee told us that the costs of supplies went up and contractors were not as available. So it appeared to us that CUSD acted responsibly with Measure Y. The Classified School Employees Association (CSEA) Claremont Chapter #200 also gave its endorsement for Measure CL. CSEA becomes the 2nd group of district employees to support the bond measure after CFAs announcement 2 weeks ago.

Boulevard frontage road. That would allow for space to build a shared bike/pedestrian path and additional street lighting when the properties are developed. During public comment, Michael Keenan pointed out the hypocrisy of the city council approving the second reading of the ordinance for reduced parking at the Claremont Colleges, while approving changes to the Field Station that can lead to development on the land. We wouldnt even have this second reading of adoption of parking at The Colleges if it wasnt for the students whose motivation was to protect the Field Station as an ecological research station, Mr. Keenan said. City Attorney Sonia Carvalho said the city council has its hands tied on the issue. The discretionary decision by the council was made when the tentative map was approved and with this final map all youre doing is checking off the boxes to ensure that the conditions of approval were satisfied, Ms. Carvalho said. The council voted unanimously in favor of dividing up the land. Councilmember Corey Calaycay urged those against development of the Bernard Field Station to apply pressure directly on the Claremont Colleges. Village salon ban revisited The council extended the citys ban on new salons opening in prime first-floor locations in the Village. The ban was instituted in 2008 and was up for a 2-year review. City planner Belle Newman said there is a continued need for the ordinance as requests come in regularly from spas and salons for vacant spaces in the Village. She argued the vitality of the Village has been strengthened by the ordinance as more eateries and retail stores have opened. The ban on salons has not led to increased vacancies in the area, Ms. Newman added. The council voted unanimously to continue the ordinance on a permanent basis.

Taking my art on the road

y two favorite houses on the upcoming Claremont Heritage home tour are the Sturms/ Richardson house on Padua Avenue and the DuVall/Haley house on Seventh Street
The Sturms house is an original structure in the former citrus area north of Miramar Avenue. The home and carriage house were initially built in 1930 by master-stonemason M.R. Pierce for Matt Tolton. Tolton may have developed the site as a spec home, because, according to current owners, Carrie Richardson and her husband, Roy Bruckner, the original occupantowners were John and Blanche Sturms, who bought the home in 1931. The current owners purchased the home from Mrs. Sturms in 1988. The home displays many original features, such as the dressed granite fireplace, gumwood molding, many original light fixtures and an almost completely original kitchen with an abundance of original tile. The three-quarter-acre grounds are a prime example of California living, with towering shade trees, terraces, sitting areas, and paths planted and built by Mr. Sturms. The stone walls, including the one built of boulders behind the sunken area at the west of the property, were also built by Mr. Sturms. Of course, citrus trees used to surround the property when Mr. Sturms was alive The current owners have recently enhanced the indoor/outdoor aspect of the home with the addition of 2 pairs of French doors. The room now opens onto a new south-facing deck on one side and the dining room on the other. On the other side of the dining room, an original pair of French doors opens the space up to the front door and the arcaded area to the north. This central portion of the home now allows for passive cooling, with wonderful cross breezes at night, and the openness of the home betrays its size at 1500 square feet. The current owners also have respected Mrs. Sturms love for roses and the property by planting over a hundred heritage roses. The DuVall/Haley house is an excellent example of
Craftsman Bungalow architecture. The Craftsman style evolved from the Arts and Crafts Movement of the late 1800s and early 1900s. These homes generally emphasize natural materials, hand crafting, and a harmony between the house and the surrounding landscape. The exterior details are often understated and feature prominent structural features, such as sturdy beams and rafters, as design elements. This is a two-story home with downstairs living areas and upstairs bedrooms. The house has wonderful horizontal lines which are created by the placement of rows of windows and a roofline featuring multiple gently pitched gables. The focal point of the house is the front porch area, which wraps around the side and features a beautiful oak door and a brick foundation. The house is shingled and painted its original brown color. It generally has restrained detailing with the exception of a somewhat ornate design feature on the rafters below the roofline. The home was constructed in 1912 for Oliver and Francis DuVall. The DuVall family was one of my favorite founding families and was prominent in the early development of Claremont. Oliver DuVall fulfilled a number of roles in Claremonts early years including bookseller, shopkeeper, and pharmacist. He was appointed to the position of postmaster by President McKinley in 1898, a position he held until 1916. Mr. DuVall also had the Duvall Block building built in downtown Claremont in 1912. The building continues to stand at the corner of First and Harvard and housed College Book and Drug until 1927. The Duvalls, and subsequently their daughter, lived in the house until approximately 1950. During the 1960s the home was owned by Charles and Dorothy Chase,
who founded the Folk Music Center in Claremont in 1958. The present owners, Ed and Elaine Haley, purchased the house in 1982 and began caring restoration efforts. The interior of the home has a number of intact features of the Craftsman style. The downstairs rooms feature extensive natural woodwork, original hardware, wide pocket doors with leaded glass panels, and multiple built-ins. There are seven additional houses on this tour and other goodies. This is Claremont Heritages 28th home tour. It will be on Sunday, October 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This years event is unlike any other in the organizations history. The tour is expanded to include some exciting firsts, guaranteed to generate a great deal of interest. Some of the refreshing changes for this years Home Tour are: A bike-route map will be provided at check in at the Garner House to all those wishing to pedal from home to home, rather than drive. Volunteer valets will ensure the safety of bikes while riders tour the homes. JAX Bike Service will also be available at the Garner House. Lunch will be offered on the patio of the 1926 Garner House, one of the tour homes. For the first time in Claremont, gourmet tacos, quesadillas, ceviches, and more from The Hot Tamales Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger will be available. They will be bringing the modem flavors of Mexico to the Gamer House. Welcome the Border Grill Truck, featured recently in The Los Angeles Times and the AAA Magazine, at the home tour or just drop by for lunch. Workshops will be offered to those who tour the homes and others who just want to Iearn about the Care and Repair of Historic Wood Windows; Energy Efficiency; Rebates, and Incentives for Your Home; Drought Tolerant Landscaping; and Modern Architecture and Southern California. Bad timing, better options to Measure CL

s a school board member and parent volunteer, I am against the bond in Measure CL on the November ballot. The more I look at reasons not to support the bond, the more convinced I am that this is an awful time for a bond. I oppose the CL bond because of past bond problems, our current financial predicament, and future opportunities that are more cost effective.
First, I oppose the CL Bond because of past bond problems. During the Measure Y campaign in 2000, we were told that a $48.9 million bond had to be passed because we urgently needed construction, upgrades, and even a new school. The bond passed but we didnt get a new school. In fact, we didnt get a lot of things promised by the bond. Indeed some of those items that were supposed to be funded by Measure Y 10 years ago are now on the list of proposed projects for the CL bond. In other words, this bond is trying to make up for the failures of the last one. These past bond problems occurred when there were more opportunities for communication between the community and the school board. A wide cross-section of residents has voiced grave concerns about the CL bond. Many parents, PFA officers, booster volunteers, and even supporters of the past Measure Y bond oppose the Measure CL bond. To get a small sense of the opposition, simply recall the many letters to the editor in the COURIER. As Brian Bowcock stated, People dont want to contribute blindly. He also said he hopes to see the district improve its local partnerships. I, too, would like to see
monies which will be coming to the district. These funds can restore teaching positions and programs. CL bond money cannot be used for personnel although it is purported to free up money to accomplish the same thing without generating debt. Dear Editor: I confess, Im at a bit of a loss at how to respond to Pam Stevensons letter [COURIER, September 29], since she didnt seem to read the same letter that I wrote. But, lets give it a go, anyway. She says, regarding Democrats saying no, that I back nothing up with facts. Depressingly, evidence for any one of those nos is so prevalent, that one only needs to monitor the daily news cycle to find it, assuming one is open to it, and looking. You say, that a simple Google search can prove me wrong about no Republicans [actually, I said no one, I never mentioned Republicans] desiring to get rid of Social Security and Medicare. If you actually read Congressman Paul Ryans position on Social Security, from the source you cite, www.roadmap. republicans.budget.house.gov, you surely saw the very first line which states, The proposal strengthens this important retirement program and makes it sustainable for the long term, and, continues in the next sentence, Preserves the existing Social Security program for those 55 or older. You might also be interested to read Congressman Ryans article on the same website, The Elusive Adult Conversation on Entitlement Reform and the Debt Threat. Dear Editor: Regarding Doug Lyons diatribe about the thoughtful letters from Mr. Rook and Mr. Byrum, I wanted to make a few comments. I have news for the Right Wing Republicans like Mr. Lyon, the endless wars
in Iraq and Afghanistan are unsustainable. Allowing corporations to set up operations in Dubai, and still get no bid government contracts like we have done, for Halliburton is unsustainable. Cutting taxes while we are prosecuting foreign wars is unsustainable. Having the lowest effective tax rate in the Industrialized world for corporations is unsustainable. Destroying the middle class in this country is unsustainable. Social Security and Medicare have been 2 of the most popular and effective government programs in the history of the United States and are critical safety nets for the indigent and the middle class. They are completely sustainable if we make the morally right decision that people come before profits and that the general welfare of all citizens is more important than the elaborate wealth of a few. The Iraq War and the Afghanistan War will cost the United States over a trillion dollars and that alone could have funded all of our social programs. If that blundering, dunderhead George Bush, as Doug Lyon called him, had succeeded in privatizing Social Security 10 years ago, no one in this country who is dependant on this program would even be close to retirement, as their investments would now be worth about 40 cents on the dollar.
We can thank 8 years of Bush and the nuts on the right for their complete incompetence in the handling of our economy for that debacle. And what hubris for him to declare that somehow the Republican Partyread Fox News, Rush Limbaugh and large corporationswant smaller, less intrusive, less expensive government. Wasnt it Bush/Cheney and company who spent more of our tax money than any administration in U.S. history? Wasnt it Bush/Cheney who listened to our private phone calls? And wasnt it Bush/Cheney who made our world far more dangerous by starting 2 unnecessary wars? I am sorry but letters from the extreme right are becoming like their newest political stars, Christine ODonnell, Rand Paul and Sharron Angle, full of witchcraft, racism or just plain ignorance. Doug Lyon should go back to interpreting and re-interpreting the Constitution.

Joseph Paul Augustyn, Jr. died on September 25, 2010 in his Claremont home, surrounded by family, after fighting a 2year battle with cancer. Born on October 29, 1940 in New Castle, Pennsylvania to Joseph Paul Augustyn and Frances Elizabeth Wilk Augustyn, Mr. Augustyn attended St. Marys Seminary High School, Kiski Preparatory Academy, the University of Pennsylvania and Youngstown University. While at Youngstown U, he met and married Gretchen Freni. Shortly after marrying Ms. Freni, Mr. Augustyn began work in the titanium industry. A transfer with Reactive Metals (now RTI) brought him to California where he spent the rest of his life building his family and business. In 1974, he founded Sierra Alloys, Co. Inc., now located in Irwindale, and grew the company into one of the premier suppliers of titanium and special-alloy steels to the aerospace industry. Under his leadership and guidance (and, in recent years, under the leadership of his devoted son, Jeff), Sierra Alloys has won numerous awards and honors from companies such as Boeing, Lockheed and Northrop. A strong advocate of personal freedoms, Mr. Augustyn was involved with many philanthropic groups, with a particular interest in environmental conservation, Native American issues and Catholic charities. He enjoyed many outdoor activities, especially competing in Field Trials with his adored Labrador Retrievers. He also loved exploring California and all of its hidden and off-the-beaten-path treasures. Mr. Augustyn is survived by his wife of 48 years, Gretchen Augustyn of Claremont; his daughter and son-in-law, Susan Augustyn and Glenn Schiller of New York, New York; his son and daughter-inlaw, Jeff and Debi Augustyn of San Dimas; his daughter and son-in-law, Betsie and Bill Berrien of Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin; his daughter, Jennifer Augustyn of Paris, France and Los Angeles; his 4 grandchildren, Brandon Augustyn and Grace, Will and Joe Berrien; his greatgranddaughter, Kaylee Augustyn; and his brother, Noel James Augustyn and his family. Currently reading: Though Mr. Saine doesnt dabble too much in the kitchen, At least nothing in the lines of gourmet cooking, he said, he is reading Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly, by chef and television personality Anthony Bourdain. This is probably the first book Ive read about the culinary arts, said Mr. Saine, who has worked in the grocery industry for approximately 20 years. I had seen a show of his and he seemed like a fascinating guy. Kitchen Confidential explores the real lives of cooks and restaurateurs, which, in great contrast to the immaculately and artistically presented food that reaches ones table, are sometimes crazy, dirty, addiction-riddled and full of debauchery. Believe your fancy meal to be prepared by elegant and masterful hands of the executive chef? More likely, Bourdain writes, it is served to you through the collaborative effort of whacked-out moral degenerates, dope fiends, refugees, a thuggish assortment of drunks, sneak thieves, sluts and psychopaths. In sometimes raunchy, sometimes funny and always raw and real stories, Bourdain shares his years of experience in kitchens around the world. Recent reads: Before Bourdains wild-ride of a book, Mr. Saine finished Farther Than Any Man: The Rise and Fall of Captain James Cook by Martin Dugard. Usually I choose my books based on adventure, especially set in the outdoors, he said. The 18th-century shipping industry and early explorers have always fascinated me. Favorite book: I have an answer for you, said Mr. Saine, treading the road less traveled: it is the rare Bookmark subject who can name a single favorite, and never with such ease. For him, John Krakauers Into the Wild holds this esteemed position. The book tells the true story of Christopher McCandless, an intelligent, well-educated, affluent young man who walked away from his possessions, gave all of his money to charity, tore up his social security card and dropped out of traditional societal living. McCandless lived sparsely and out of a backpack, wandering across the country and eventually hitchhiking to Alaska to live off the land and see if he could do it, said Mr. Saine. He couldnt. And through some unfortunate circumstances, he ended up dying. Its a true story. It was just fascinating. In the book, the author attempts to explore and figure out what mistakes McCandless made and what led to his death as well as what motivated him to abandon his bound-for-success, upper-class lifestyle in the first place. In his story of McCandless, the author includes a number of thoughts and sentiments from people who had crossed paths with the young man during his journey. Reviews suggest Into the Wild is an absorbing, emo-

tional read that leaves one contemplating their perspectives on traditional society and their own place in it, or beyond it. This book spoke to me, Mr. Saine continued. I think it speaks more to the male spirit. I think there are a lot of men, well, I think so, who think about this, about venturing out and living off the grid. Favorite book nook: Typically, Mr. Saine adds to his book collection by visits to Borders, Barnes and Noble and, less frequently, Amazon.com. Favorite place to read: Simply put, Generally, just a couch. Next adventure: Mr. Saine intends to read the autobiography of Walt Disney. My wife worked for Disney and my mother-in-law works for Disneyland, and Ive always enjoyed Disneyland who doesnt? Its such a great place, and to read about the founder will be fascinating. A final thought on reading: I think reading is huge, said Mr. Saine. I remember my mom sitting down and reading to me at a very young age, even before kindergarten, and my dad, when wed be out driving, hed encourage us and say Read everything you see, everything that comes into view, signs, billboards. Ive always enjoyed reading.

Senior hopes to make impact as CUSD board member
laremont High School senior Alanna Samuelson is known as a mainstay of the schools Speech & Debate program. Now the 17-year-old is using her voice for a different purpose.
Alanna is hoping her term as Claremont Unified School District student board member is not only a learning experience but also a stint as an effective representative of her school to district officials and board members. Its a chance for me learn more about the education system as well as voice the opinions of my friends and peers to the board, Alanna said. The fact that Im in a position to really do it is powerful. I love giving my opinion and luckily, Speech & Debate prepared me for that. Along with fellow student board member Karen Stopani, Alanna was selected as a student board member by votes cast by

Native Claremonter and musician Ben Harper performed at President Barack Obamas Moving America Forward rally on Tuesday at the University of Wisconsin before an estimated crowd of 26,500. the CHS and San Antonio High School interschool council members. Alanna was eligible to be nominated by serving as an Associated Student Body (ASB) interschool council member. According to Alanna, the significance of her becoming a board member took time to sink in. At first, my family was like oh because I was like oh, said Alanna regarding her familys reaction to her becoming a student board member. We didnt know what being a student board member meant. Then my dad was at a Claremont Chamber [of Commerce] event with Dr. [Terry] Nichols and found out more about it. My family really enjoys me being on the board and theyre really proud of me for it. Alanna and her family moved to the Claremont from Los Angeles when she was 7 years old. From there, she attended Condit Elementary School and El Roble Intermediate School before her tenure at CHS.
Speech & debate, student board member and ASB duties arent the only responsibilities the CHS senior is currently balancing. Alanna is also enrolled in 3 Advanced Placement (AP) courses this year and plays AYSO soccer. Its a lot of balancing and I have to know when to stay home to do my homework and know when to go hang out with my family and friends, she said. This is my 9th year doing AYSO soccer. Its more for fun and is a good way to get exercise and release energy. With as much time as Alanna has spent in debates, sports and leadership roles, her career interest lies in fashion. The 17-year-old isnt completely sure what college she wants to attend next fall but wants to eventually work in the fashion industry. Im really interested in fashion, Alanna pointed out. My dad was in the garment business for years and my brother works at Ralph Lauren. I wouldnt want to
be a designer but I would like to be in the business and merchandising part of it. Maybe I could be a buyer or do something with fashion magazines but I would be interested more in the behind-the-scenes stuff. Alanna is grateful for her experiences at CHS. She credits Mr. [David] Chamberlain and the speech & debate program with helping her to have the strength to communicate her thoughts to others. I used to be very shy but this program has helped me a lot, Alanna said. Mr. Chamberlain is by far the best teacher Ive ever had. Hes taught me so much and I know if I ever need help, I can go to him. Mr. [Bruce] Pottorff has had a big influence on me, too. I had him for World History and was a teachers assistant for him last year. All of my years here have been a great experience and Ive met really good friends that Ill know for the rest of my life.

League of Women Voters is hosting a meeting on the pros and cons of the 9 propositions on the California state ballot for the November 2 General Election. The meeting will be held next Sunday, October 10, at 2 p.m. at the Claremont Library Meeting Room at 208 Harvard Ave., Claremont. The League is also hosting a candidates forum for the 59th Assembly District candidates for State Assembly on Monday, October 11 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Padua Room at the Hughes Community Center, 1700 Danbury Rd. The 59th Assembly District includes Claremont, Glendora, LaVerne and San Dimas and all candidates have been invited to participate. Both events are free and open to the public. These events are being held to inform citizens who will be voting by mail as well as November 2 voters. Candlelight Pavilions 25th anniversary celebration
Since the Candlelight Pavilions premiere in October of 1985, the dinner theater has performed over 170 productions. This activity is therefore exempt from the requirements of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) (California Public Resources Code Section21000 et seq.), in accordance with Article 5, Section 15061.b.3 of the California Environmental QualityAct Guidelines (14 Cal.
