FRAMING GRAPHIC: Defining a Learning Progression The Framing Graphic Organizer (Ellis, 1998) provides a good structure for

drafting and representing your learning progression. A frame graphic essentially contains the following structures. Use the table below to create a Frame of a typical learning progression in the topic area you are focusing on in the course. In the top box, indicate the topic area. Define three levels of performance. Replace the labels inside the cells of the Framing Graphic with labels that fit your topic area. Use language that most meaningfully defines a learning progression in your topic area. By: Liz Shewchuck Learning Progression in My Topic Area Is about.. Ratios and Proportional relationships

Novice: Defining CONCEPT(S) Students can identify equivalent fractions, and compute simple unit conversions.

Practitioner: Defining CONCEPT(S) Students can convert basic fractions to lowest terms and compute more difficult conversions among units of time and measurement. Students can also determine simple unit rates. Essential DETAILS Solves simple problems involving miles per gallon and miles/kilometers per hour. Determines unit price for items given in a situation Solves ratio problems using

Independent/Expert: Defining CONCEPT(S) Students can convert between ratios, fractions, and percents. Can solve multiple step problems involving ratios and equivalent fractions, and can solve problems involving tax and tip. So what? What is important to understand about this? It is important to understand this topic to be able to see how certain numbers work in the real world. For example, if a student is baking, they need to be able to know that if they double a recipe that calls for 1 cup of milk, they can really just pour in a pint. When at a restaurant, it is important to be able to calculate tip, or if working at a restaurant it is helpful to know what percent you were tipped. When shopping it is important to know percent discounts, or driving, what the average miles per gallon their car gets so they can see how their car is effecting the environment.
