It’s that time of year again for the Melville Millionaires Farm & Leisure
Lotto and we need your support. Last year we were within 45 tickets of a
sellout. This year with your generosity, we anticipate a sell out. With you,
the previous purchasers, our lotto can be a success. It’s crucial for the club to
have a successful lottery. Just a reminder last year we had a person purchase
a 3-pack for $250.00 and the person won on all three tickets, so please help

“It’s kind of a David and Goliath scenario”, we’ve got Melville, population
4,500, and we’re playing in a league where everyone is at least two times
bigger than us and some as large as a million people.
The WMBL also includes teams in Yorkton, Weyburn, Regina, Moose Jaw,
Saskatoon, Swift Current, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Okotoks, Edmonton
and Sherwood Park. Melville is the smallest market in the league.
The team provides a lot of entertainment for the fans and when we’re on the
road every time we play there’s always publicity for our community, you
can’t buy that kind of thing. The baseball club provides an excellent place
for young men to develop their skills and further their baseball careers.
The revenue from the lottery won’t just help solidify the financial
standing of the franchise, it’ll also assist the team on the field. For example:

the additional funds could be the difference in allowing the team to bring in
an extra pitcher for the playoff drive to help put us over the top.
We’re playing in a big league but we just don’t have the people to do it
(alone). We’ve been able to compete in the league but the costs just
continually go up: travel, meals, accommodations, equipment, everything.
Melville has always been such a good sports town but we’re fighting the
odds all the time because we’re small. We are asking or community and the
whole country to help us out by purchasing some lottery tickets.
The total cash and prizes for the lottery are valued at over $217,764.00. First
prize is a choice of $100,000 in cash or one of four packages (two are farm
related, one is material for a cottage and the other is a package comprising
of two vehicles, a boat and two ATV’s). The main draw is May 17 and the
value of the grand prize package is $115,000.00 and up. An early bird draw
will be held March 29th. It consists of an electrical bicycle and $15,000.00
in cash prizes. There are a total of 118 prizes. Winner will be published in

Do you have a recipe for making perfume with fragrant flowers? Thank-you,

Ah, spring is in the air and what a wonderful way to bring in the season by talking
about flowers! In ancient Egypt, perfumes were made up of aromatic plant ingredients
which not only provided a pleasant fragrance but healed a person of certain ailments.
One of the most well known Egyptian fragrances was called Kyphi; it contained the
ingredients of plants such as peppermint, myrrh, saffron, cinnamon and juniper. Here
is a simple recipe for perfume that anyone can create at home.

Place cheesecloth inside of a bowl so that the sides are hanging over the outer edge.
Fill the bowl with 1 cup flower blossoms of your choice. Pour water over the flowers
until they are completely covered. Cover and let sit overnight. Remove the cheese-

How do you keep cheese from going mouldy? We always purchase cheese in the
900 g brick. We have tried wrapping the cheese in plastic wrap tightly after each
use. Somebody said that aluminum foil works well, but after trying it, I wouldn’t
agree with them. We also had a friend who had one of those machines that would
make bags to whatever size you wanted and then suck the air out and seal the
food. This didn’t work that great either. There are only three of us in our
household, but we use a fair amount of cheese; still mould continues to appear
before we are half done the cheese. I have talked to other people and they have
the same problem. Some people have gone as far as buying the small bricks due
to the moulding issue. The only problem with that is the price of cheese is then
quite a bit more expensive. Can you please help us out with a solution that really
works? We would be EXTREMELY grateful. Melvin
Dear Melvin,
In order to prolong the life of cheese begin by soaking a paper napkin or clean cloth
with vinegar. Put the vinegar in the same airtight container as the cheese, doing this
is one way of slowing down mould growth. However, if you really want to get the
best bang for your buck, grate the brick of cheese using either a hand grater or a
food processor with a grater attachment. With the help of a food processor grating
the entire brick of cheese will take less than 5 minutes. Next sprinkle white flour (or
cornstarch) in with the cheese. Spread the cheese onto a baking sheet and place in
the freezer. Leave for a couple of hours and then pour the cheese into a freezable
container. Store in the freezer. Never buy pre-grated cheese; it costs up to 70% more
than block cheese.
Just as a side note, reduce the time it takes for cheese block ‘ends’ to harden by
storing a few lumps of sugar with cheese in an airtight container.
Another unique use for rhubarb is a spray for aphids on ornamental plants.
Take 4 chopped rhubarb leaves and boil in 2 pints of water for 30 mins. strain
and add a splash of liquid dish soap, pour into a spray bottle. Hang on your
hip and go shoot some aphids! Do not use on edible plants.

The challenge when tackling stains on hardwood is that any aggressive solutions
will damage the finish and as well there are huge varieties of hardwood floors and
finishes available. Therefore, if you were to use a product such as paint thinner
you would very likely get rid of the stain but permanently strip the finish. In some
cases steel wool type 2 and regular floor cleaners have had great success.
If this were my floor I would do what I did when my kids wrote with permanent
marker on my mother-in law’s wood table. Make a solution of baking powder and
dish soap, scrub the area with an abrasive pad (not an S.O.S pad). Next brew 4-6
bags of tea and let stand until lukewarm. Dampen a white rag in the tea and wipe
onto hardwood floor. Repeat until the entire floor is clean.

 RECREATIONAL VEHICLES
Choppers came into being in the 1960’s and
1970’s. They were the next step in motorcycle
evolution after the “bobber”. The bobber came
about after American soldiers returned home
from World War II. While they remained loyal to
the Harley Davidson company, riders that had
served oversees just weren’t quite satisfied with the
machines the company was producing. These riders
remembered the motorcycles they had seen in
Europe that were more lightweight and more
exciting. Most hade been trained to work on
motorcycles and automobiles in the service. They
began to get together and talk about improvements.
To make the bike lighter, riders began removing or
shortening the fenders. The front fender was usually
removed completely, while the back fender was
made short enough to just protect the passenger
from mud and water thrown up by the rear tire.
This is where the term bobber came from. Riders
continued to make changes or customizing their
bikes and eventually the “chopper” was born. Their
original purpose was for dirt track racing.
The term chopper comes from the process of
chopping. Riders began chopping off any part they
felt was unnecessary. This included windshields,
front fenders, big headlights, crash bars and big
seats. The standard large footrests were replaced

with forward-mounted foot pegs. The fuel tank was
made smaller. This made the bike lighter.
Next, riders began raking the front end of their
choppers so that the angle of the fork to the ground
decreased allowing for an increase in the wheelbase.
They also raised the handlebars and called them
ape hangers.
Anything that was thought too big or unnecessary
was either made smaller or removed. The front tire
was made small; the rear tire was made fat. Each
rider created the bike he wanted to ride.
As always, as soon as this rage caught on,
enterprising individuals began designing and
creating custom bikes to sell to other riders so they
didn’t have to do the work themselves. Choppers
began to be built, not just chopped. While this
trend slowed for a few years, it seems to have made
a comeback. Custom built choppers created by top
designers are greatly prized and sought after.
The Shovelhead FX Super Glide was one such
Harley Davidson model to come out of the chopper
evolution. Choppers became especially popular
after the film Easy Rider, starring Peter Fonda, was
released in 1969.
