LESSON PLAN

DATE: March 26, 2013. TIME OF DAY: Morning DURATION: 45 60 minutes

SCHOOL: Childrens World Academy CYCLE: Kindergarten UNIT: Making Sense of our Five Senses LESSON: Sense of Sight: Optical Illusions

OBJECTIVES

The objective of this Language Arts and Science lesson is for students to begin to look further into their sense of sight through the following topics: o Optical illusions o Basic principles of visual processing The overall objective is for students to begin to understand that perception and sensation are not necessarily the same and that optical illusions are an ideal example of this. MATERIALS

VOCABULARY

Competency #3: To interact harmoniously with others. To participate in the group: The students will meet this competency by expressing their ideas about previously covered terms and concepts as well as the ones introduced in this lesson in a group setting. They will be encouraged to make connections based on the discussion and the ides presented by their peers.

MELS COMPETENCIES
Preschool Education

Competency #5: To communicate using the resource of language. To understand a message: The students will meet this competency as they will express their understandings of the information received through both discussion and the My Sense of Sight booklet.

_________________________________________________
Competency #8: To use information CROSSCURRICULAR COMPENTENCIES To put information to use: The students will apply information learned

throughout this lesson, the previous ones and previous knowledge in order to apply it to both a discussion and the activity.

TIME

LESSON Introduction To begin, I will ask the students what they know about their sense of sight thus far. o What do you remember about the eye and about our sense of sight as a whole? Development Next, explain that we will be discussing optical illusions today. Ask some of the following: o Who knows what an optical illusion is? o Who knows of some examples? o Is there anything in our classroom that can be considered an optical illusion? I will anticipate that a student will point out the new addition to the sight centre. I will go on to show a video based on an optical illusion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44mw37d8LQw Following or during the video, I will ask students about what they saw and what they thought they were seeing. o I will ask what made them believe something that wasnt actually occurring. We will discuss sensation and perception and go into detail based on what they have previously learned about the senses and the brains role in the use of our senses. We will discuss how colour, light and patterns can affect our brains understanding (perception) of what we are being shown. Next, I will have students examine another optical illusion and discuss their perceptions of what theyve seen: http://www.michaelbach.de/ot/mot_adaptSpiral/index.html Finally, we will look at several images and discuss what we see. I will describe these as being eye tricks.

After this discussion, I will go on to explain the upcoming activity where students are expected to create an optical illusion of their very own. This will be done through the craft activity designed to give the perception that their hands are raised from the page. o Later, the students are to complete the page based on optical illusions in their Sight Booklet using information acquired from this lesson. Closure Finally, we will further discuss the importance of both our sense of sight and the brains ability to identify what has been seen.

Evaluation Students will be evaluated based on a teacher observation sheet, the craft activity, as well as the assessment sheet in the Sight

LESSON Booklet. Whats next? (Extension) Directly linking this activity to another will occur only when we will be discussing the other senses (i.e. hearing and how we sense and perceive sounds differently).
