Our Father
But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. But the father said to his servants, Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate. For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to celebrate. (Luke 15:20b-24) Do you recognize the story? If you are thinking The Parable of the Prodigal Son you are correct. However it could also be called The Parable of the Forgiving Father. At the same time we know there is another son in the story whose feelings toward his estranged brother will be brought to bear in the end and will be addressed by a compassionate, forgiving father. I always enjoy preaching this text from Lukes Gospel. If you will remember, the fifteenth chapter of Luke has three parables and each one is about something that is lost. The first lost thing is a sheep that accounts for one one-hundreth of a shepherds flock. The next is a lost coin that represents one-tenth of a womans savings, maybe the equivalent of a days wage. Then there is the Parable of the Prodigal who represents one-half of the heirs of a particular father. I dont really think there is anything intentional about the progression of the value of each lost thing, but it could be something for us to think about. The first two parables find friends and neighbors rejoicing with the shepherd and the woman who celebrate finding that which was lost. Jesus adds each time that there is joyover one sinner who repents. We need to always recognize that apart from the grace and mercy of our heavenly Father we would be eternally lost. By His grace we are led to repentance through the proclamation of the Law and given relief from the burden of our sin through Holy Absolution which delivers
the Gospel to us as the power of God to salvation for all who believe that He gave His one and only Son into death for us and our salvation. I am still blessed to have my father whom I can call if I have a question of which I need his help. I first need to know that I need that help or his advice. You may know the story of the child whose father knew everything when he was a youngster. When he became a teenager there were some real questions about whether his Dad knew what he was talking about. When he went off to college it became apparent that his father didnt have a clue. That assessment started to change when he got married and started a family of his own and began to experience situations that he knew his father had addressed in one way or another. So in the end his father really did know whatever he needed advice and counsel about. Apart from our heavenly Father we are like the sheep, the coin and the prodigal of Luke 15. We are lost. Lost and condemned is another way we have learned to say it with Dr. Luther in the meaning of the Second Article of the Apostles Creed. As Sunday School children we may have had this awe-struck image of God and of His Son, Jesus. When we got through the particulars of Confirmation and began to feel more independent in our teenage years we may have had some real questions about God and His will for our lives. We may even have started discounting who He truly is. We may also have allowed our schedules to fill up without worship and Bible study penciled in. When we reached adulthood we may have become just like the Prodigal who didnt want his father to have any p art in his life. He had better things to do and places to be. Doing his fathers will and dwelling in his house were not a part of his plan until he came to himself, which may imply repentance, but in particular he was starving to death. He knew he could be at the least one of his fathers servants who always had enough to eat. Our heavenly Father invites us to come and taste and see how truly good He is and celebrate that though we were lost and maybe have wandered from time to time, He is still on the lookout for us so that we might know His love and compassion. He tenderly invites us to believe that He is our true Father and that we are His true children, so that with all boldness and confidence we may ask Him as dear children ask their dear father. During this month that we celebrate Fathers Day I am thankful for my father who truly knows a great deal and is still willing to share it even as he shared the faith, showing me the love of the Father.

This wonderful hymn is a simple prayer to God the Father, asking Him to give us nourishment both for our bodies and souls, until the day we are gathered from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Indeed, God is our loving Father and gives good gifts to His children, even the greatest gift of all: His own Son. Thanks be to God for His great blessings! -On Saturday, July 6th the Youth Choir of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lisle, IL will conduct a workshop with members of our Childrens Choir, and then perform a concert that evening (time TBD). They will also join us for both services the next day. We will be providing housing for this group, so if you are willing and able to do so, please let me know by calling the church at 663-3631 or emailing me at nathan@gracelutheranlr.org. Thank you for your help with this!
STEWARDSHIP POINTS
His Love Our Response
If you recall in the May newsletter the Stewardship Points began with the familiar offertory response What shall I render to the Lord, for all His benefits to me? (Psalm 116:12 ESV). A few years ago when I was in college our church went through a comprehensive stewardship education program by the name of His Love Our Response. We worked through a Bible study on the many gifts God gives us and laid out basic biblical principles that surround giving. No matter how much I understood and used all the spiritual gems, I was always amazed at how simple and clear the phrase was: His LoveOur Response. Gods Love it is evident everywhere. We see it in His creation of the world, in Jesus death on the cross and His resurrection. In our Baptism He makes us His own and brings us to faith. He also gives us His Word as well as the assurance of His grace, forgiveness of sins, and eternal life. He gives me my body and soul, wife and children, house and home, reason and all my senses, etc The list goes on and on. Our Responsebecause God gives us all these blessings we want to serve Him--purely out of gratitude. We want to serve Him through the use of our time, our talents and our financial blessings (treasures). Those three Ts include giving a percentage, giving with a cheerful heart, and giving off the top (first-fruits). We cannot out-give God. In the May article the following was stated, Since the Lord is truly the owner of all things there is really nothing that we can give Him that He doesnt already have. Our giving to Him shows that we acknowledge His gifts to us and that we trust Him to continue to provide for us. This leads us to question whether the Lord needs anything from us? The answer is, absolutely not! But we do have an obligation to support the ministry He has entrusted to us here at Grace. So just like the psalmist, we ask What shall I render to the Lord, for all His benefits to me? Stewardship Board Chairman, Joel Junkans
