10:00 Michael Tomlinson AFFECTIVE ROUTES TO EFFECTIVE LEARNING Something effective is something that works.

. Effective ways of teaching could be: - Competitive activities, where the students desire to show you what they know - Games that reinforce language - Keeping the students on the edge of their seat, waiting for the punchline (something they have to discover) - Activities that require movement Ineffective ways of teaching could include: - Letting the students talk about things they feel strongly about - Activities that require copying - Long grammar exercises We can talk about two general methods of teaching: Traditional: The teacher is right and the student is wrong. The teacher gives the students the knowledge. Heavily grammar based. Affective teaching: -The students grow in self awareness, develop sensitivity to human feelings. - Anxiety is reduced. - The students are actively involved in the learning process. - The students are relaxed but alert. - Working hard and having fun at the same time. - There is tolerance of mistakes. - The fun is structured. - There is teamwork between the students and the teacher. We learn a skill by using it. How did most of us learn how to use computers? By using them.

Classroom environment Make sure the seating arrangement helps the learners when they want to engage in team activities. Useful tips when creating the classroom environment: - Display work the students have done - Change the setup from time to time - Have a cosy corner where the students can read or you can tell them stories - Let the students know a bit about you and your interests Classroom management - Agree on expectations with the class. Even if you give them some freedom, you can still limit their options, which can be more positive for them. - Share responsibility with the students. - Reward good behaviour continuously. A well behaved student is a student that is ready to learn. Keep them moving! Role of teacher Be a facilitator. Encourage creativity. Help the students build self esteem. Create excitement about learning. Tolerate mistakes. This will help them be more fluent at early stages of language learning. - Let the students be autonomous and have responsibility for their own learning. The teaching materials should be attractive. Flashcards, reading storybooks, listening exercises, interactive

exercises, can be very useful. Technology creates fun and excitement and suits different learning styles. Its a valuable reinforcement of what theyre learning. Using music and movement (dancing) involves the students and they have fun while they are learning vocabulary and grammar without even noticing it. Exams can be useful in several ways: to check students progress and then be able to take action if they have any problems, and to let them see they are learning. Most of all, use activities you enjoy, and adapt your techniques to the class. 12:00 Lynn Durrant CREATING COMMITMENT Idea for the first days of class: Prepare shoe box with personal items and tell the learners about yourself. They can bring two objects to class or draw those two obbjects and talk about themselves. Buy postcards and stamps, address them to the school and give them to the students. Tell them to write about a certain topic. Creating group identity: Put students in groups of 4. Two of them will be A and two will be B. Each A and B pair have to pretend they are best friends. A Students will ask B Students the following questions: Where is your best friend? How many footsteps are there between you and your best friend? Who is sitting behind you? What can you see on your left? What can you see on your right? Who is in front of you?

Thinking cards: Cards that get the students thinking! There is no correct answer. Gets the students involved. For example: When you get home there is a giant lump under your carpet. What could it be and how did it get there? Or As you run up the stairs to your bed you notice a little door on one of the steps. Where has it come from? Who lives behind it? Questioning Skills: Show a photograph to the students and ask them the following questions. What can you see? What can you hear? What can you smell? What can you touch? What can you taste? Where are you?

Ask them to be creative. Useful tips: - Boys respond better to things that are slightly aggressive. - The students could keep a learning journal where they write what they have learn. Its good that you review what youve been working on at the end of the lesson to show them that theyre making progress. - Give the students red, yellow or OK stars at the beginning of the lesson to reinforce good behaviour.
