Installation and setting to work

The electrical installation has to be performed in accordance with the safety regulations of the local authorities. Due to safety reasons the electrical installation must be performed by qualified personnel only. The splitter must not be opened ! A grounding bolt is provided on the front panel of the MS303 (see following figure). The grounding has to be performed by all means. ESD precautions have to be observed. In order to keep the specification for environmental and safety the MS303 has to be mounted vertically. Additional casings or covers for the MS303 must not be used. All ports of the MS303 have to be terminated for a proper operation!

switched off. The other LED indicates the operation status of the MS303. If the device operates properly the LED shows green light. The current consumption of the internal amplifiers is monitored and if the consumption is not within a defined window the LED will switch over to red. If the MS303 is not provided with power the LED is off. The bias switch can be set to three different positions: 0, 1 and 2. If position 0 is selected no biasing is possible. In position 1 the bias port to/from mobiles will be biased, and in position 2 the port to/from BTS will be provided with DC power. Note: Keep in mind that you can damage the MS303 or any other device if you choose the wrong biasing. You can either bias another device by the MS303 or the other device can bias the MS303. It is not allowed to switch two bias voltages against each other. Check the correct position of the switch. If the bias option is used, the respective bias voltages and current consumptions have to match.

At the left-hand side on the top there is the grounding bolt as mentioned before. Next to the grounding bolt on the right hand side there is the bias port. This port is one of the four ports which lead to/from the mobile phones. The remaining three ports to/from the mobile phones are situated in one line to the right. On the bottom to the right there is the antenna port that leads to/from the BTS. The DC connector is provided in the middle of the front panel and the bias switch is situated between DC connector and antenna port. The configuration of the two LEDs is as follows: The left LED indicates a summary alarm of the ALC/APAC. That means that the ALC or APAC is active if the LED is red. Otherwise the LED is

Functional Description
The MS303 is an active splitter operating in the GSM frequency range. The operation principle is given with regard to the following block diagram.

Cabinet drawing

Downlink signals reach the duplexer. The duplexer is the frequency separation unit that splits and recombines uplink (UL) and downlink (DL). After the duplexer the signals get to an attenuation network in which the feedback loop of the automatic level control (ALC) adjusts the output power. Amplifiers and filters provide the required amplification of the signals and the separation to other frequencies. The connection to the output port is carried out by the duplexer as mentioned before. The path is split up into four paths and thus four devices can be provided with RF. All ports have to be terminated for a proper operation. The uplink works very similar. Four input paths are combined to one. Then, it works exactly as in the downlink except that ALC and APAC (automatic power adjust circuit) are provided in that link and no further splitting is carried out. The power supply for the MS303 can be supplied via a bias network from the RF cable (see block diagram) or an external power supply via an additional connector. A switch is provided in order to set the power supply as required. The MS303 can also bias another element if the appropriate external power supply is used. A lightning protection is provided as well.
