Area of a Parallelogram
BEFORE
Now
Youll find the areas of parallelograms.
WHY?
Word Watch
base of a parallelogram, p. 552 height of a parallelogram, p. 552
2 Cut a right triangle from one side of the parallelogram and move it to the other side to form a rectangle.
Form a rectangle.
3 Find the area of the rectangle. How does the area of the rectangle compare with the area of the parallelogram?

Notetaking
In your notebook, you may want to copy an example that illustrates how to find the area of a parallelogram next to the formula for the area of a parallelogram. This is a good way to organize the area formulas you learn in this chapter.
The base of a parallelogram is the length of any one of the sides. The height of a parallelogram is the perpendicular distance between the side whose length is the base and the opposite side.

Area is measured in square units, not linear units.
EXAMPLE
Your turn now Find the area of the parallelogram with the given base and height.
1. b 8 in., h 11 in. 2. b 9.3 m, h 7 m 3. b 3.25 ft, h 12 ft
EXAMPLE
Exercising A treadmills belt is in the shape of a parallelogram before its ends are joined to form a loop. The belts area is 2052 square inches. The belts width, which is the height of the parallelogram, is 18 inches. Find the length of the belt, which is the base of the parallelogram.
Write formula for area of a parallelogram. Substitute 2052 for A and 18 for h. Divide each side by 18. Simplify.
