Heat Exchanger Design

Problem Statement:
The problem aims at extracting maximum amount of heat from a hot fluid by the means of a Heat Exchanger, which is required to be designed by the participants.

Device Specifications:
The exchanger to be designed will be semi-batch type, in which hot water will be filled in beginning, and cold water is supplied continuously. The heat transfer type will be indirect contact. Your prototype must fit in a box of dimensions 30cm* 40cm* 40 cm. The prototype should not be moved during the course of operation. The prototype must have a separate provision for entry and exit of hot and cold fluids, and water supply will be provided through a pipe of diameter inches. The prototype will be designed for capacity of 2.5 kg of hot water.

Game Rules:
All the participating teams will be provided with 2.5 kg of hot water, and a funnel will be provided for the purpose of filling hot water into exchanger. The bore of the funnel used will be . If the difference between the mass of hot water fed and recovered at the end of the process exceeds by 30 grams, the team will be disqualified. Also, a proper mechanism must be provided for filling and withdrawing hot water in the device. Tap water will be used as the source of cold water, and during the entire run the volumetric flow rate will be kept constant for all teams.

The teams will be asked to get ready 15 minutes before the start of their competition. Note that only one trial run will be given for the teams around the competition arena. The run time will be declared at the start of the event.

Judging Criteria:
Judging will be carried out on the basis of two Stages:Stage 1:Presentation Round (30 points) a) Presentation should be given by the team with the autonomous Heat Exchanger on the day of competition in front of the judges. The presentation should describe the design of Heat Exchanger for its efficacy, innovation and theoretical soundness. b) Presentation should be given prior to the Performance competition of Heat Exchanger. Team members should be present during judging to answer questions from the judges. c) The presentation round consists a total of 30 points. Presentation will be judged according to the following criteria: Design of the Heat Exchanger for its efficacy, innovation, creativity, theoretical soundness and it's unique features (13 points) Description of the Heat Exchange between the hot water and cold water (7 points) Safety measures and precautions taken (5 points) Team member presentations (5 points)

Stage:Performance of Heat Exchanger (70% points) Measurements of the following quantities will be made.

Inlet Temperature of hot water Ti Exit Temperature of hot water Te Time taken between the hot water fed and recovered Mass of hot water M Total Heat Transfer: M( Ti Te )Cp

Points will be calculated by the above expression

DECIDING THE WINNER:

The team which gets a total of maximum points during these two stages is declared as the winner and also the difference between the mass of hot water fed and recovered at the end of the process should not exceed by 30 grams. In case of tie prototype, team with higher temperature difference (Ti Te ) will win.

General Rules:
A team should consists of a maximum of 4 members. Each team must give a name for their Heat Exchanger at the time of competition. All the Heat Exchanger will be first checked for the safety before the start of the competition. The machine must not contain any dangerous material for safety reasons. Judges have the right to disqualify any team whose working mechanism or game strategy is considered hazardous in any way. Cognizance reserves full right for change in any of the above mentioned rules, and any change occurring will be displayed on website. In case of any dispute arises the decision of judges will be considered final and binding to all and no argument will be entertained under any circumstances.

VIOLATION AND DISQUALIFICATION:

a. No team is allowed to hinder the functioning of Heat Exchanger of other participating teams. Failing to do so will straight away lead to disqualification. b. No team is allowed to touch directly or indirectly the Heat Exchanger of other participating teams. Failing to do so will straight away lead to disqualification. c. Judges have the right to disqualify any team if they feel the team is not playing with fair interests.

Participation:
All the students enrolled in high school, undergraduate or masters student of any discipline at any recognized institute are eligible to participate in this event. Participants must register on Cognizance website. It is compulsory for all the participants to register there to participate in any event in Cognizance. All the willing participants are needed to send a brief description of their design along with diagram to chemical.prototype@gmail.com. The last date for submission of design is 15 th February 2013. The word limit for the abstract is 500. Team Details include: Name (Highlight team leaders name) E-mail IDs Contact Number College Name with contact details Branch, Year City Cogni ids of all team members

REGISTRATION PROCEDURE The registration shall be done through the Cognizance website. Steps 1. Each Member needs to register on the website. This will generate a unique cogni id. 2. The Team Leader (which you will select yourself) needs to login into the website through his username and password. 3. The Prototype event page has the tab Register to register the team for the event. 4. This will generate your Team Id and a mail shall be sent to the mail id of team leader about the registration.
