Boiler Up! Win, Lose or Drawwe continue to support our Boilermaker
Student-Athletes. It never ceases to amaze me how our staff can stay positive even when times get tough. Our focus has, and always will be, the success and well-being of our student-athletes as well as our teams. So lets focus on the good things that have happened around here. Our athletics department started a new recognition program this year: The Bravo Award. Recipients will be nominated by their peers within athletics for their dedication to their job and for putting forth an extra effort to move Purdue forward. I am very pleased to share with you that we had 4 recipients this year: Kara Kessans, Jane Bline, Casey Kohr and Stephanie Leech. Congrats to all four individuals! This year has also been a success for Team-Sports Medicine. Our student program continues to thrive in the classroom and we continue to develop them into fine promotable individuals. Through our Newell- Combs scholarship fund, we were able to award over $35k in scholarships. Six juniors and six seniors were given the honor of having their names placed among the distinguished winners from years past. Thank you for your continued support, this a tradition that is envied by programs all around the country. The month of May has been slow in Boiler country. As our student- athletes return to campus and youths visit from around the area for summer camps, we are reminded of how special the campus of Purdue University is and how lucky we are to be connected to so many great people. We are looking forward to seeing you all in Indy this summer at our Alumni event. Please stop in and say hello! Boiler Up, Hammer Down, Hail Purdue! Boersma@purdue.edu

While at Purdue, Nicoles primary responsibilities were to provide medical care to the womens soccer team. She also assisted with mens and womens tennis and track and field teams. In the summer she was Gatorade camp manager and helped restructure the sports medicine coverage for summer camps. During the last fall season she had assisted in a concussion research study with the womens soccer team. In February she represented Purdue at the Big Sky Sports Medicine Conference with a case study poster presentation. Currently she is looking for employment in the collegiate athletic training setting.
Krystals primary responsibilities during her graduate assistantship were with the division of recreational sports. She provided athletic training services to club sports teams and intramural teams. After graduation, her dream job would be to return to her alma mater, Franklin College, and work as an athletic trainer. She would also enjoy working as an athletic trainer at a small college or as a physician extender in Indiana.
Katie is graduating with her Doctorate of Philosophy in Health and Kinesiology. She has previously worked with the Purdue softball team and spirit squads, the Division of Recreation Sports, and also as a research assistant with Dr. Leverenz and Dr. Nauman (Mechanical Engineering). Her work on helmet attenuation will be presented this summer as part of the J&J Feature Presentation at the National Athletic Trainers Association annual meeting. Katie and her husband, Evan, will be moving to Woodbury, MN, following graduation.
Junior Athletic Training Student Award Winners Left to Right: Meeja Richards, Katye Clark, Klint Dougherty, Paige Creghton, Sarah Hurdish. Not pictured: Maddie Hansen Thank you to all those who contributed! Greetings from the academic side Ill begin with a few updates on our faculty. Alice continues as our Clinical Coordinator and is split with athletics as the rehab coordinator in the athletic training room. Denny is continuing to teach the HK 208 classes, Prevention and Treatment of Athletic Injuries, and the students love him, as you would imagine. Dr. Zinsmeister retired last summer so Craig Voll took over teaching anatomy and pathology this year. We miss Dr. Z teaching but she still is around and continues to help when and where needed. Craig accepted an Assistant Professor position at University of Indianapolis beginning in the fall so we will be shifting around teaching responsibilities again.
Spring 14 saw us graduate 15 athletic training students on May 17 th . All are set for next year and we wish them well as they begin their careers. All but one has taken the BOC exam and our students continue to do well. At this time our overall 3-year first-time pass rate on the BOC is 90%, well above the required national threshold of 70%.We selected 14 new students to enter the program. Our enrollment for next year is 41.
Were pleased with the new class. The students just keep getting stronger. All of our classes are doing well both in the classroom and the clinical setting as well as finding meaningful placement after graduation. We cant ask for more! Im continuing to work on moving the program to an Entry-level Masters Program. Our next comprehensive accreditation review is in the 2016-17 academic year and I want to have the new curriculum ready for review at that time.
A new and exciting facet of our program is a move toward an international scope. As you know, for several years Ive taken the AT students on a study abroad trip to China and did that again this May. Over the past couple of years, Ive also been working on a relationship with the athletic therapy education program at Dublin City University in Ireland. This past spring we had the first 2 students spend the semester at DCU, taking classes in their AT program. The students did a great job and represented Purdue well. In exchange, we will have 2 DCU students at Purdue for the fall semester. Additionally, we will have a Sport Rehabilitation student from Beijing Sport University attending for the year, also beginning in the fall. Our students who were on the SA trip to China in May met and spent some social time with Yifu Cliff Zhou and are excited to have him coming. I see these opportunities as just adding to the possible choices our students have when they graduate. Athletic training is becoming a global profession and we need to have our students ready to be a part of it. Those are the high points from the education side. Thank you, again, for your support. Anytime you are in the area, please stop in and say hello. We always like to see you.

Grant is from Brookston, Indiana, a very small town north of Purdue. He graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University, a school in Marion, Indiana with a BS degree in Athletic Training. His responsibilities will be to provide athletic training services to the co-rec department. He grew up hearing and seeing the different traditions of Purdue University, and is excited to finally be a part of them.
Brooke grew up in Oxford, Iowa, a small town outside of Iowa City. She attended the University of Iowa with a major in athletic training and a minor in psychology. She primarily assisted with the women's basketball team at the University of Iowa this past year. Brooke will be working with the men's and women's track team when she arrives on campus this summer.
After 30 yrs at Purdue, Im officially retiring effective June 30, 2014. I would need more space than was offered me to thank all the people who touched my life at Purdue. Chris Ramsey hired me in Biomedical Engineering in 1984. The Director, Dr. Leslie Geddes made a huge impact on my career for almost 6.5 yrs. I was then hired by Coach Gene Keady in 1991. The next 15 yrs in MBB was unforgettable. His work ethic, loyalty and impact on others, was like no other I had encountered. When Coach retired, and Matt Painter took over, the loyalty and love for my job was even greater. A change was made and Denny Miller hired me in Sports Medicine. The support I have had the last three years of my career, has been great, not only from the entire staff, Denny himself, but the new Director of Sports Medicine, Doug Boersma. He is a family man, loyal to his staff, and dedicated to over 500 student- athletes. The SM staff welcomed me and never looked back. Thank you to each one of you. Now that I am planning life away from Purdue, Im very excited. I will now concentrate on what matters most, my family. To each and every one who made a difference in my life, during my tenure at Purdue, THANK YOU. Kathy OBrien

The Purdue Athletic Training Club is a student organization on campus where athletic training students can practice new and old clinical skills, while also volunteering within the community. The club continues to serve as a mentor/mentee program for the incoming freshman as they further expand their knowledge and skills in athletic training.
Throughout the year, we had the opportunity to finesse various skills and practices. Spine boarding in the pole vault pit presented an exciting challenge and surprisingly there were many volunteers to play the victim. Vacuum splint application, spine boarding in lacrosse and football gear, and role playing emergency situations, are a few other proficiencies practiced.
During the 2013 fall semester, the students were busy with many events. We sent our largest group of thirteen students to the Indiana Athletic Trainer's Association convention to participate in the IATA Student Skills Challenge and Quiz Bowl. Overall, our teams did well, but looking forward to improvement next year. Our club hosted a toiletry drive for 3 weeks to support the local homeless shelter, as well as continuing our Christmas tradition of donating to Toys for Tots. We were able to donate two car loads full of toys!
There were a couple of special events that our club was excited to participate in. IATA hosted a Pacers night where students were able to enjoy a night with other Athletic Training students across the state and then cheer on the Pacers as they faced the Utah Jazz. Another event we were happy to take part in was Purdue's Relay for Life. Our club raised over $250 contributing to the $111,000 raised for the event.
In order for us to continue to participate in these various events, our club held two fundraisers. With the best cheese bread in town, the skip-a-meal at Mad Mushroom was found to be a delight. The annual Penny Wars was also successful, raising almost $300.00. The staff member and student with the highest and lowest amount of money in their jars received a pie in the face. This year the lucky winners were: Dr. Alayne Sundstrom, Sal Vallejo, junior Chloe Salaway, and sophomore Michael Howk.
As Iota Tau Alpha continues to strengthen in numbers, our plan is to expand our community involvement. Increasing the number of Quiz Bowl teams at IATA and volunteering at Purdue University Dance Marathon are a few events mentioned by our new officers, that they wish to get involved with next year. Your new officers include: Tanner Maksymicz- President, Katye Clark- Vice President, Mary Jo Soller- Secretary, Grace Connell- Treasurer, Natalie Ater- Historian, and Michael Loudervack- Representative. Thank you for your continued support, and Boiler Up!

As most of you know from previous years, the Purdue family has set up an NATA Scholarship in the name of Denny and Linda Miller. For all of you who have donated to the scholarship we thank you very much. This effort has been spearheaded by Randy Cohen and Craig Voll and it is our intention to raise enough to make this a yearly $2,500 scholarship. We are still working towards endowing the scholarship as a tribute to Denny and Linda for everything they have done for Purdue University. If you are interested in making a contribution please contact Randy Cohen or Craig Voll. The Varsity P Club was created under the umbrella of the John Purdue Club to unite former Boilermaker varsity student-athletes, athletic trainers, managers and spirit squad members into a passionate community with a life-long commitment to each other and Purdue Athletics. As athletic training alumni, your dedication and support behind the scenes has proven to be one of the most critical components in the success of our sport programs. As we look to the future, we recognize that in order to continue to build a strong athletic training program, we need you and other athletic training alumni to become active supporters of YOUR program. To date, there is only 7.6 percent of our athletic training alumni who financially support Purdue Athletics by being members of the John Purdue Club/Varsity P Club. This currently places athletic training as the least active sport program at Purdue. Please take time to discuss this fact with other athletic trainers you stay in touch with and take pride in making sure your program has a stronger alumni participation. Remember, you have the choice to determine if you want your contribution to go towards the Newell-Combs Athletic Training Scholarship fund to help benefit our current and future athletic trainers or to another sport program. For more information, please click the following link Varsity P Club Information or call Chris Clopton, Director of Varsity P Club, at 765-494-8671. Also, please note that by joining the John Purdue Club, this automatically qualifies you to become an active member of the Varsity P Club.
