Colleges Prey on Black Students

By Shirley Irons, Street Hypes Contributing writer
Americans born into the middle class were living at or near poverty as adults. In a 2008 Department of Education survey, 96 percent of the students leave with debt that they cannot repay. The loan default rate among for-profit college students is more than double that of their peers in both public and nonprofit private schools. Working-class people who hoped to achieve more permanent economic stability were told that buying a home and higher education would validate them as legitimate participants in the American way of life. Now the American

amaican-born Usain Bolt is #40 on the World's HighestPaid Athletes for 2013 according to Forbes magazine. Total Earnings: $24.2 million, salary/winnings: $200,000 and endorsements: $24 million. Bolt repeated his gold medal trifecta at the 2012 Summer Olympics by winning the 100 and 200 meter finals, as well as the 4x100 meter relay. He introduced himself to the world at the 2008 Games when he set world records in the 100 and 200 meter events. Bolt earns little in prize money, but cashes in through endorsements, appearance fees and sponsor bonuses for record race times. His biggest endorsement deal, with Puma, pays about $9 million annually. He added multimillion deals with Samsung and Comcast since the London Games.

he road to freedom passes through the schoolhouse doors to the poor house for some African-American students who are presently riddled with debts by attending for-profit colleges. According to Kai Wright in an article written for Salon, an online newspaper, Black Americans seeking higher education have shot up by 35 percent between 2003 and 2009, nearly twice the rate at which white enrollment increased. But this headlong rush to get schooled has also led many down a depressingly familiar path, unimaginable debts. These students have enrolled (Credit: kickstand via iStock) in for-profit institutions rather than public colleges or universities with little to show for it, while a small group of financial players have made a great deal of easy money at their expense. Between 2004 and 2010, black enrollment in for-profit bachelors programs grew by 264 percent, compared to a 24 percent increase in black enrollment in public four-year programs. The two top producers of black baccalaureates in the class of 2011 were both for-profits Phoenix and Ashford universities. In 2008, as black Americans sought higher education, the Economic Policy Institute found that 45 percent of African-

Dream is swallowed up in an unregulated market that target people for whom that dream is most elusive. The for-profit education boom is part of the larger economic challenge black America faces today. Big for-profits schools are often run by financiers not educators and are owned by publicly traded corporations or private equity firms. Continued on page 4

ather's Day is yet another celebration and a grand marketing opportunity targeting men. The Day was inaugurated in the US in the early 20th century to complement Mother's Day and has grown in popularity to celebrate and honor fatherhood and male parenting. However, Fathers Day continues to lag behind Mothers day in popularity and commercial activities. It would appear on the surface, that some people really don't care about fathers, or fathers have failed in assuming their responsibilities. The US Census Bureau data esti-

This is an extraordinary large percentage of children currently being raised without black fathers. Statistics show that the high percent of Black men incarcerated or murdered are some of the reasons negatively affecting our children. It is shown that the absence of

Daddy is not helping the growth and development of families as in most cases, the income from single mothers alone cannot cover the basic costs of any family with the minimum of one child. It is also extremely difficult for any single parent in today's society to structure discipline and maintain the emotional welfare of their children. Nevertheless, kudos to the responsible Black fathers who are positively contributing to the social and economic development of our children and the community at large. Happy Father's Day!

any entrepreneurs are leaders, and many leaders are entrepreneurs. As an educator and an experienced business owner, I believe it is essential for individuals to create their own stream of income. A wise entrepreneur will create a business plan. The business plan is fundamentally a research project, and the more thorough your research, the less likely that you will omit important expenses or underestimate them. An operation plan is desired when formulating your plan to start or continue an existing business. It explains the daily operation of the business, its location, equipment, people, processes, and surrounding environment. In addition, the operation plan is essential as it produces outcomes while managing restraints on time, money, and resources. It is the instrument by which strategy is converted to action and responsibility placed for goal implementation on business leaders. To help with building a business plan, the new and seasoned business owners need to ask themselves the following questions: 1.What changes do you foresee in the industry over the short and long term? 2.How will your company be poised to take advantage of them? 3.What factors will make the company succeed? 4.What do you think your major competitive strengths will be? 5.What background experience, skills, and strengths would you personally bring to this new venture?

Mount Vernon Police Reports: cting on a tip of a shipment of marijuana scheduled for delivery to a south side residence, members of the newly formed Task Force consisting of Officers from the Mount Vernon Police Department and the Westchester County Department of Public Safety, recovered a major shipment of marijuana and arrested the suspect who tried to recover it. On Friday, June 7, 2013, Task Force members set up surveillance. Shortly thereafter, Bronx resident Neville Peterson, 49, was observed taking possession of a large parcel at the undisclosed residence on the Mount Vernon side of the Bronx border. When Peterson attempted to leave the area with the package, Officers approached him. Peterson threw the package and attempted to flee, but was apprehended. The package was recovered and found to contain 14 pounds of marijuana, with an approximate street value of up to $60,000. Peterson was charged with possession of Marijuana in the First Degree, and held

Colleges Prey on Black Students

Continued from page 1 Last year, the New York City subway system led a city campaign to warn wouldbe students about debt scams. One such student was poster child Garvin Gittens who racked up more than $57,000 in public and private debt in pursuit of a two-year associates degree in graphic design at the forprofit Katharine Gibbs School in New York. According to Gittens, the debt didnt appear so intimidating at first, but a cascading series of loans eventually caught up with him and in the end, his degree proved as meaningless as it was expensive. Later when he applied for a bachelor degree program, no legitimate college would recognize his credits from Katherine Gibbs because of the schools shoddy performance and sanctions by the State. Its more of an emotional thing, Gittens explained, Id like to say, I have a masters in design. That would make me feel good. The industry thats been turning fast profit off the ambitions like Gittens is finally seeing tough times of its own. Regulators at both the federal and state level have begun working to put an end to these practices. Among other things, the Obama administration has tightened rules for schools to participate in the federal student aid program upon which for-profits depend. African-American strivers are earnestly heeding the message that they hold their economic destiny in their own hands by achieving higher education to prepare for the jobs that will one day come, but the only thing an awful lot of them are learning is another lesson in just how expensive it is to be both poor and ambitious in America.

US citizen loses bid to supress Jamaican wiretaps

Federal Appeals court has ruled that United States authorities working with the Jamaican government had no duty to review the legality of Jamaicas surveillance of a U.S.citizen suspected of drug crimes. Facing conspiracy and other charges, Stephen Lee , an accused drug trafficker on Friday asked a Brooklyn judge to suppress wiretaps from Jamaica that the U.S. government planned to use as evidence against him. However, the Judge denied Lees request and he was convicted in 2012 of conspiring to import and distribute one thousand kilograms or more of marijuana destined for the U.S. market. Lee was acquitted on two counts related to importing and distributing a single load of marijuana in 2007. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan ruled that the judges denial was the right move and upheld Lees conviction. The three-judge panel of the appeals court, in their ruling, said although an American law enforcement agency and its foreign counterpart may collaborate on

BRONX: olice were searching Sunday for a 3year-old boy who was allegedly taken from his grandmother in the Bronx on Saturday afternoon by his aunt, who does not have custody of the child. Authorities say Geraldine Brooks, 25, took her nephew, Ladavion Brooks, from a stroller around 5 p.m. Saturday in front of the boy's home at 1130 Anderson Avenue in Highbridge. It is unclear what led to the incident. Geraldine Brooks, was last seen wearing a white shirt and black pants. The boy was wearing dark blue sneakers, blue pants, a black shirt and a blue hat. their work, that does not necessarily mean the relationship is sufficient enough to trigger constitutional protections, Constitutional law does not impose a duty upon American law enforcement officials to review the legality, under foreign law, of applications for surveillance authority considered by foreign courts, the court wrote. Defense attorney Jillian Harrington called the ruling in line with recent revelations regarding the governments cavalier attitude toward unregulated electronic evidence gathering. Miss Harrington said the defence team was very disappointed in the courts ruling. The appeals court said the U.S. and Jamaica signed a memorandum of understanding in 2004 establishing a program in which Jamaican law enforcement officers investigating drug distribution monitored intercepted phone conversations authorized by Jamaican court orders. The U.S. provided surveillance equipment and training to Jamaican officers with the expectation that wiretaps would result in evidence that could be used in U.S.courts.

QUEENS: he former director of a Far Rockaway nursing home is accused of trying to cover up the disappearance of a resident with dementia. Juliet Clifford was charged with falsifying business records, endangering the welfare of an incompetent or physically disabled person and other charges. State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says Clifford failed to report when Alan Frazer, 74, went missing from the Bishop Charles Waldo MacLean Episcopal Nursing Home on May 26. By Sunday afternoon, Frazer, seen above, remained unaccounted for. Schneiderman says Clifford did not call 911 when Frazer went missing, removed notes from Frazer's medical records and instructed staff not to call police. Investigators also say Clifford told them Frazer had left against medical advice. A spokeswoman for the nursing home tells the Associated Press says Clifford is no longer an employee, although her information is still listed on the home's website. Clifford faces up to four years in prison if convicted. Anyone who may have seen Alan Frazer is asked to call 1-800346-3543.

Former NYPD Sergeant Admits Real Estate Fraud

MANAHATTAN: ames Monahan, 43 the owner of a real estate investment company called Panam Management Group, Inc., and a former sergeant in the New York City Police Department, pled guilty on Monday (June 3) in Manhattan federal court to wire fraud, mail fraud, and conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud in connection with his participation in a fraudulent real estate scheme. As part of that scheme, Monahan misappropriated approximately $4.7 million he obtained from investors for a real estate development project he claimed to be constructing in the Dominican Republic. The real estate project was never developed and investors lost all of their money. According to the Indictment, statements made during the guilty plea proceeding, and a Complaint previously unsealed in Manhattan federal court: Beginning in early 2008, Monahan negotiated with another real estate investment company to solicit investors for a project he claimed to be constructing in the Dominican Republic. During the negotiations, Monahan repeatedly touted his prior service with the NYPD as proof of his trustworthiness and as a reason to invest in the project. In connection with the project, Monahan and a co-conspirator, Edward Adams, who was a New York-based attorney, executed agreements that required investor funds to be deposited into escrow accounts that were to be managed by Adams. The agreements required that the majority of the funds be deposited in an account to which the defendants would not have access.

KINGSTON, JAMAICA: he Jamaican dollar plunged to its lowest value ever yesterday, trading at an average $100.08 to its US counterpart, a development that is in keeping with a recommendation of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Last month, the IMF, in its Country Report on Jamaica, said that despite a recent depreciation in the value of the Jamaican dollar, the currency was overvalued and further depreciation was needed. "The recent nominal exchange rate depreciation has been useful, by reversing part of the overvaluation of the real exchange rate that has emerged in recent years, thus supporting price competitiveness," the IMF said. "Looking forward, and given the need to address the remaining overvaluation, structural reforms are expected to help in restoring external competitiveness, alongside exchange rate flexibility," the fund added. Early last month Jamaica signed off on a funding arrangement with the IMF that will see the island receiving near US$2 billion in loans over the next four years from the IMF, the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank under an Extended Fund Facility. In its country report, the IMF said that there may still be a need, at times, for interventions in the foreign exchange market aimed at avoiding disorderly short-run move-

ments. "In this context, the programme contains clear reserve targets to safeguard the adequacy of reserve coverage a key policy priority under the programme," the Fund said. Since the end of April this year, the Jamaica dollar had been experiencing slight fluctuations in value in the region of J$99 to US$1. It traded at an average J$99.93 to US$1 on Thursday before losing 15 cents yesterday to cross the symbolic $100 threshold. Yesterday, the Canadian dollar gained 81 cents to trade at J$97.90, while the British pound traded at J$155.44, up 56 cents. Jamaica's decision to decimalise its currency took effect on September 8, 1969 and saw new coins and banknotes replacing the pound, which was circulated for decades as a mixture of British currency and local issues and was always equal to the British pound. At the time of its introduction, the Jamaican dollar was stronger than the US dollar, valued at J$0.77 to US$1. http://www.jamaicaobserver.com

Venezuela, which amounts to about twothirds of its consumption. The Russians withdrawal comes as the Norwegian company that owns the drilling platform they have been leasing, the Songa Mercur, said it would be leaving Cuban waters in July for another contract. Zarubezhnefts decision signals another disappointment for Cubas dreams of finding oil, according to Jorge Pinon, a Cuba energy expert at the University of Texas in Austin.

here are more than 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the US. More than half a million are right here in New York City. They pay taxes, boost our economy, run businesses and are part of the citys fabric. We are the ultimate city of immigrantsand yet because of Washingtons inaction, the New Yorkers and their families are forced into the shadows and face obstacles at every turn. Thats why Ive put forward legislation to create an official New York City ID card, and why Im working with legislators up in Albany on a new law that will allow undocumented immigrants to apply for a drivers license. Cities and states around the country are already using these reforms to bypass the logjam in Washington and help all familiesregardless of immigration status become fuller parts of our society. Few groups understand this need better than our Caribbean-American community. Of the 1.7 million Caribbean-born immigrants in the US, nearly 40 percent call New York City home. Theyve come here from places like Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti, Grenada and Barbados--where my wife's family originated. They work as home-health aides, babysitters, hairdressers, food servers, and construction workers--mostly off the books because of their undocumented status. The obstacles they face leave them vulnerable to hardship, exploitation and even outright theft. Without an ID to open a bank account,

deplorable conditions and limited visitation rights. I have read reports of Caribbean nationals being placed in small solitary confinement cells for weeks and even months at a time. Placing anyone in a six foot cell in dark corners as if they had committed a felony is just plain draconian and unconscionable. This is why I have proposed further limiting the cooperation between our police and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement with the exception of individuals suspected of serious felonies. These measures will not only keep families together and prevent inhumane treatment. We also need to cut the bureaucratic red tape for victims eligible for U-visas through the Violence Against Women Act and demand our Citys social services agency stop penalizing the sponsors of legal immigrants when they reach out to obtain aid like food stamps and housing support. Our Caribbean nationa l s J a m a i c a n s , Trinidadians, Guyanese, Grenadians Barbadians, among othershave long been a fundamental part of our growing economy. Our city would be greatly diminished without their contributions, and we need these communities to keep our City growing. Let us start by implementing these proposalsNew York City will be better for it.

they get paid by employers in cashand are easily victimized by wage theft. They cant sign a formal apartment lease, letting landlords raise their rent without notice or evict them without due process. And when stopped by police on the streetcaught up in the NYPDs stop-and-frisk tacticthe lack of ID means black Caribbean immigrants are taken down to the police precinct and forced to wait hours, even when theyve committed no crime. My proposals for a City ID and State drivers licenses will have a profound impact on undocumented immigrants. The City IDwhich is already in use in New Haven and San Francisco will open the door to basic City services, and allow immigrants to sign a lease, open a bank account or apply for a parks pass. But these are just the first steps in our power to protect our immigrant communities. We shouldnt wait for Washington to do more. We need to put an end to the growing number of immigrants held in federal detention centers who are at risk for deportation for minor cases committed years ago. In most cases, these immigrants are taken away from their families to facilities far away and are faced with

The Jamaican, who won three sprint gold medals at the London Games, lost out to his American rival who clocked a time of 9.94 seconds. Bolt finished 0.01 secs behind. Bolt enshrined his legacy as a sprint great when he successfully defended his 100m, 200m titles at the 2012 Olympics, as well as the 4x100m relay with his Jamaican team. He recently spoke of his desire to do the same at the Rio Games in 2016, which he predicted will be his last appearance at the event.

Gatlin, who served a four-year ban after testing positive for banned substances, was satisfied to beat the world record holder. "It feels good," he told the BBC. "I put together my race strategy, and I'm not really worried about who is in the race. "Usain Bolt is a great competitor and great champion so to come out here and have a victory it just stands that I'm having a good season. "You can never count out Usain, he lost both races at his nationals last year and came back and was Olympic champion in both races, Gatlin.

ather's Day celebrates the contribution that fathers and father figures make for their children's lives. Its origins may lie in a memorial service held for a large group of men, many of them fathers, who were killed in a mining accident in Monongah, West Virginia in 1907.

Every day I wake up, I thank God that I chose to be an orthodontist. The profession allows me to meet and interact with unique and different people every day. Im a peoples person. People come to see me because they want a better smile, and I take great pride in delivering the smiles they want and deserve. For a number of patients, this is a life changing experience! It feels good to see patients, who started out shy because of their crooked teeth, leave my office after treatment with perfectly straight teeth, now confident and outgoing, Dr Craig Smith. Education and Continuing Education Dr Smith attained his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry at Trinity College in Hartford, CT. He then graduated from Tufts School of Dental Medicine in 2001 with his DMD. In 2004 he received his Certificate in Orthodontics, also from Tufts University Dental School. In between dental school and orthodontic school, he did a general practice residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Although his formal education is complete, Dr. Smith attends several continuing education workshops every year. He also attends a great deal of Invisalign lectures. These courses and seminars help him to keep up with the latest technologies and procedures, which benefit his patients. Dr Smith has been practicing in the North Bronx since 2005 at Optimum Dental Care. He also maintains a private practice in Smithtown, Long Island. Over the past 8 years Dr Smith have treated hundreds of patients in the North Bronx and is known to be a very professional and compassionate person, who treats his patients with dignity and respect. Becoming Board Certified To become board certified, an orthodontist has to have passed a rigorous set of written and clinical examinations, as well as a comprehensive review of their credentials. The initial process of becoming board certified can take anywhere from five to ten years. Once certified, the orthodontist must become recertified every ten years to maintain board certified status.

position. The two main components of braces are the bracket and the arch wire. The bracket is the metal or ceramic placed on each tooth, the arch wire threads through the brackets and at each visit to the orthodontist the wire is bent and as the wire tries to return to its original shape it moves the teeth. At each visit the orthodontist evaluates the teeth and bends the wire in a specific way to achieve the tooth movement that is desired. Rubber bands and elastics contribute a lot to straighter teeth. Attached to the braces, elastics exert the force that creates the right amount of pressure to move teeth in directions that the braces alone cannot. Signs that a child might need to see the orthodontist 1. early or late loss of baby teeth 2. difficulty chewing or biting 3. crowding, malpositioned, or blocked out teeth 4. jaws that shift or make sounds 5. biting the cheek or roof of the mouth 6. teeth that do not meet at all 7. jaws and teeth that are out of proportion to the rest of the face 8. finger sucking or pacifier habits continued beyond the age of six. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an initial consultation no later than age 7. A child can see the orthodontist at an earlier age if any of the previously stated problems exist especially for finger sucking or tongue thrusting, these conditions can be treated by certain appliances that can be custom made for the child. Early treatment can eliminate the need for more drastic and complicated treatment in the future, including avoiding the need for corrective surgery in some cases.

What does it mean to be board certified? A board certified orthodontist, also known as a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, has been voluntarily examined by his/her peers according to knowledge and clinical skills. Becoming board certified signifies the orthodontist's pursuit of continued proficiency and excellence in orthodontics. What is orthodontics and how important are braces to a childs development. Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that specializes in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. Braces are appliances or devices used to make these corrections. Braces use steady, gentle pressure over time to move teeth into their proper

Benefits of early treatment 1. guide incoming teeth into optimal positions 2. regulate the width of the jaws 3. lower the risk of trauma to prominent front teeth 4. correct harmful sucking habits 5. reduce the likelihood of teeth becoming stuck or impacted under the gums 6. preserve or gain space for arriving permanent teeth 7. guide the growth of the young jaw bones creating a better environment for those new emerging permanent teeth. Early intervention by an orthodontist can prevent more complicated dental treatment in later years. By allowing children the opportunity to have a great and beautiful smile can affect their future in a positive way. Children are very concerned about their appearance and it is an acceptable rite of passage to get braces in order to have a great smile. In some communities having braces is a status symbol indicating intelligence and wealth. Age is not a factor for getting braces, if the bone and gum tissue around the teeth are healthy anybody can have orthodontic treatment. More and more adults are seeking orthodontic treatment, currently 20 % of all orthodontic patients are adults.

eing a part of A Better Chance gives our families access to a wide variety of options for summer opportunities. An important part of preparing for the college application process is to demonstrate the ability to manage free time well and so we encourage all of our Scholars to be involved in some form of summer programming each year. Good summer programs encourage our Scholars to learn new things about themselves and to explore unfamiliar activities. Unlike the perceptible advantages that children gain from summer programs, the intangibles they accrue are hard to pin down. Our Scholars have done everything from working a summer job at a Fortune 500 corporation to traveling abroad for the summer, but many will share that their summers have had a powerful influence on their lives that stretches far beyond the activity itself. All descriptions listed below, unless otherwise noted, come directly from the organizations whose links are provided. A Better Chance does not certify the accuracy of this relayed information. Online Resources: Cultural Resources Diversity Program A Program of the National Park Service The Cultural Resources Diversity Program lists the websites of and contacts for other organizations that offer internship programs or that provide information on internships and summer employment in historic preservation, cultural resources, and related work.

Experiment in International Living A Program of World Learning The Experiment in International Living offers dynamic summer programs for high school students in over 25 countries around the world. For over 70 years, Experiment programs have provided transformational learning experiences to tens of thousands of young people. These ground breaking summer abroad programs help students develop a profound understanding of a different culture, language, and world view, as well as the capacity to see their own lives and country in a much broader perspective. International Youth Leadership IYLI offers 4-week summer programs and an 8-day winter program in the Caribbean and Latin America. Building on the research and analytical skills theyve fostered year-round, students are immersed in town or village life. They also learn about the work of international development organizations such as USAID and Africare. Upon their return, students incorporate what they have learned abroad by preparing school news articles, making presentations to youth organizations, to schools and other public forums. Students use these opportunities to break down barriers of mistrust and prejudice that separate people.

irst impressions make an impact and the first thing most people notice is your face. Proper skin and hair care is just as important for men as for women. A lack of grooming not only detracts from your appearance, but it also hinders your chance of making a good impression. In todays competitive business world, you will want to look your best in professional and social settings. An important aspect of grooming is to use quality products for mens shaving. This means using sharp razors and lubricating shaving cream, so that the razor glides effortlessly over the face. The proper use of products will prevent nicks and get a clean shave. Keeping your face well conditioned is also important. Moisturizer is not just for women. Men suffer just as much from dry skin, combination skin, or oily skin. If you have oily skin you may shy away from moisturizer, fearing it will make the problem worse. However, there are products for different skin types. Its important to check labels before purchasing skin care products. Moisturizers that are created for oily or combination skin should not clog pores or make your skin feel greasy. When possible, buy small bottles of different products to test on your skin. Do not neglect your eyebrows or nose hair. Some men give little attention to the brows or nose hair, but this is a mistake. Although you will not be worrying over your eyebrows in the same way women do, if you have bushy eyebrows or brows that meet in the middle, you should keep them well trimmed. The subject of nose hair may elicit laughs, but you probably would not continue laughing if you knew how most women feel about it. Your male friends and colleagues may not even notice the hair, but women do and most find it unpleasant.

Grooming Tips for Men

BEAUTY

CARE

Check your nostrils as part of your daily grooming routine, and use tweezers or special nose clippers to remove any visible hair. Hair care should never be undervalued. Use shampoo, conditioner, and other products suitable for your hair type. If your hair tends to be on the dry side, avoid products containing alcohol. Keep your hair trimmed to keep it looking its best and to avoid split ends this usually means visiting the barber or stylist every four to six, depending on your hairstyle and your rate of hair growth.

Love Connection

ou think your relationship is already pretty tough. But then you add in a few hundred miles and a bad phone connection, and youre convinced its impossible. However, if you and your significant other are both serious about your relationship, there are plenty of ways to make it work. Set a deadline: It may seem odd to set a deadline for your relationship, but its human nature to want concrete goals. Its much easier to know youll see your loved one again in exactly one month and five days rather than a hazy period of time. Plus, if you know when youll see each other again, you can use that knowledge to your advantage. For example, write each other cute notes counting down the days until youre together again. Or plan an incredibly special date for your reunion. Get creative! Enjoy your time apart: Its time to face reality. Many couples are overly attached at the hip and lose themselves in their relationships. If this applies to you, youll feel an uncomfortable sensation of guilt and denial right about now. Its okay! Relationships are exciting, and its natural to invest a lot of your time in them. However, the summer is the perfect time to rekindle your friendships and pick up on activities you slacked off on before. Sit down for lunch with your girlfriends without constantly checking your phone for messages. Go to the gym and sweat it out without worrying

about your appearance. Not only will you feel good gaining control over your own life again, but youll also forget how much you miss your significant other. Be positive: The most irritating thing you can do while apart from your loved one is to moan and groan about how much you hate being apart. But how is complaining about it going to help? If your boyfriend or girlfriend is studying abroad or spending time at home with family, do you really want to make them feel guilty for not being with you? This is the time to suck it up and be supportive. This isnt to say that youre not allowed to be sad or miss your significant other. But theres a huge difference between sweetly missing your other half and being miserably negative about your situation. Take a step back: If youre having an extraordinarily difficult time being apart from your significant other over the summer, its time to take a step back and pinpoint why. Usually, the most common reason for anxiety in a long distance relationship is a lack of trust. Although long distance relationships are never easy, it shouldnt be a heart wrenching experience if youre with a person with whom you have a deep amount of trust and love with. Even though its difficult to hear, if youre truly suffering during the two or three months youre apart, take it as a huge red flag in your relationship.

Dear Divine Diva: our response to "Not Ungrateful in Brooklyn (December 20) missed the mark. Her boyfriend of eleven months is flying first class to Jamaica, but he's only paying for a coach ticket for her? I was a divorce lawyer for 31 years (now retired), so I know a few things about relationships. While Enton had no obligation to pay her way to Jamaica, once he invited her, he displayed a troubling character flaw. If he was going to pay her way, he should have paid for her to sit with him in first class. Her seat in coach is a warning sign: She'll always be in the back of the plane, the bus or his life. Of course buying a first class seat for the two of them is expensive, but if he's going to take her to his family's chateau, he should treat her as an equal -- or not do it at all. Representing Brooklyn.

A few things about relationships

The responses to that letter were an interesting mix. My newspaper readers comment:

Dear Divine Diva: ot Ungrateful" is unbelievable! My husband cannot sit in coach unless he is at an exit row, and those seats aren't always easy to get. Because I'm short, I don't need the extra space and, if I am assigned an exit seat, I gladly give it up to a tall person. That woman will be in Jamaica (paid for!) by her boyfriend. I would go in the baggage compartment for such an opportunity. -Happy To Trade Places

Dear Representing Brooklyn: appreciate your viewpoint, one which is shared by many other readers.

Dear Happy To Trade Places: less-expensive option for long-legged fliers is to buy an extra coach seat , HOWEVER Im only flying the same class as my man if we are traveling together. -Always Divine Diva

overboard trying to fix an emotional melodrama that really isn't your responsibility. Nosing around in other people's affairs rarely helps anyone, but you can still be a true friend by listening and showing your support. CORPIO (Oct. 23 Nov. 21): Your dreams are wildly vivid now and you may be even less interested in having others involved with your inner process. But you don't have to close yourself off completely; confiding in another person can help you process your feelings and deepen your relationship. AGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 Dec.21): You could come across as if your emotions aren't very important, especially if you talk about them in an offhand manner. Ironically, you may believe that changes are occurring, even if nothing is happening yet. Be courageous and seek your voice. APRICORN (Dec. 22 Jan. 19): Although fulfilling your obligations quickly fills up your schedule, you still might believe that you can fit more activities into your day. Unfortunately, even the time you set aside for relaxation is rapidly disappearing now. QUARIUS (Jan. 20 Feb. 18): You're willing to connect with nearly anyone today and, more importantly, you have a great time doing it. Unfortunately, you might also waste precious energy doing something that is not critical to your goal. ISCES (Feb. 19 Mar. 20): It's tempting to slip into a caretaker role today because you are so empathic when it comes to the feelings of your friends. It may be a real challenge to avoid playing the role of a martyr now, but giving away too much of yourself too quickly might turn compassion into resentment in the blink of an eye.

Fortunately, you're able to think through several contingencies and map out a sound strategy. But don't let logic limit your options; it's smarter to combine your rational approach with visionary ideas. AURUS (Apr. 20 May 20): It's crucial to practice self-discipline because you might struggle if you try to accomplish too much now. Nevertheless, you have an excellent opportunity to finish what you start if you establish attainable goals and then concentrate only on the most essential tasks. EMINI (May 21 Jun. 20): Your ability to rationalize is so natural that you could be the victim of your own cleverness. Be careful not to sidestep an unpleasant discussion now because denial can come back and make things difficult later on. ANCER (Jun. 21 Jul. 22): Your current strategy is to keep your insecurities quiet rather than acknowledging any confusion. Although you're correct to believe you should only share business matters on a need-to-know basis. EO (Jul. 23 Aug. 22): Although you might not seem insecure, you still may be concerned with a coworker's emotional response. Your strategy could backfire if you try to hide your anxiety by being purposefully vague. IRGO (Aug. 23 Sept. 22): Finish your big tasks early in the day since you might become more lackadaisical. Instead of worrying about everything you want to accomplish now, you're more interested in avoiding stress. IBRA (Sept. 23 Oct.22): You could go

n alarming new report released last Monday by the city's Department of Health shows every 90 minutes a New Yorker dies of a diabetes-related illness. It's a milestone that no one is celebrating: Deaths from diabetes-related causes reached an all-time high in 2011 and the epidemic is getting worse every year. According to the city's Department of Health, the number of deaths linked to the chronic illness nearly doubled from 6 percent in 1990 to 10.8 percent in 2011. "Fifty-seven hundred people are dying of diabetes-related causes. That's the most we've ever had. And that means 11 percent of our deaths in New York City are related to diabetes," said City Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley. Experts say overweight New Yorkers are at greatest risk for diabetes-related heart disease, kidney failure and respiratory illness.

"Obesity rates have been rising for the last 30 years. The greatest risk factor for diabetes is obesity so as we have an epidemic of obesity, we have an epidemic of diabetes," Dr. Farley added. The study shows that blacks are being hit the hardest of all racial groups in the city, followed by Hispanics, whites and Asians. It also shows diabetes-related mortality rates are more than twice as high in lowincome neighborhoods like Brownsville in Brooklyn and Mott Haven in the Bronx. "I've heard people say diabetes is one of those things everybody has. But you know what? Diabetes is not one of those things everybody has - it's not normal - it's absolutely preventable. The same way obesity is preventable," Farley said. Doctors say the best way to prevent diabetes is to eat a sensible low-calorie diet, avoid sugary drinks, exercise and get regular check-ups.

he Health Department today launched new ads educating New Yorkers about the added sugars found in fruit-flavored drinks, energy drinks, sweet teas and sports drinks. The new ads, which are a part of the Pouring On the Pounds campaign and will run on buses and TV, explain that these beverages may sound healthy but are packed with added sugars that lead to obesity, type 2 diabetes and its serious complications. The TV ads encourage New Yorkers to replace these sugary beverages with healthier options such as water,

seltzer, fat-free milk, and fresh fruit. The ads will run throughout the month of June. Sports drinks, energy drinks and fruit-flavored drinks sometimes sound like theyre good for us, but they are contributing to the obesity epidemic just as much as sugary soft-drinks, said Dr. Thomas Farley, Health Commissioner. A 20-ounce lemonade delivers 67 grams of sugar and 260 calories, more than a typical soft drink. Replacing these sugar-laden drinks with healthier options is one simple but powerful choice New Yorkers can make to reduce their risk of obesity and diabetes.

Eating sugar has also been indicated in raising bad cholesterol while lowering good cholesterol. Weight gain is indicated in hardening of the arteries which directly contributes to heart disease. Further, sugar definitely plays a role in developing some types of diabetes. Sugar, particularly that in fruit juice, is also known to cause tooth decay. Consumption may also make one more likely to suffer from gum disease. Thus vigorous brushing of the teeth should always follow consumption of sugar. It is though that sugar plays a role in how we behave as well. It has been suggested that excess may cause depression. It may also result in hyperactivity or mood swings as one drops from sugar highs to lows.

An Amazing Woman, A talented Servant of God

S
Always doing, Always helping!
he just launched her inspiring CD currently number 1 in the UK and in the islands and swiftly moving into New York. This woman owns a family type group home; she loves and cares for the less fortunate ones. She's pastor, a singer, song writer and a devoted wife. She's one of the pastors on the pastoral board in Mt. Vernon Hospital where she prayers with the sick ones and encourages them from the holy words. She's spreading the good news of salvation on cable TV Thursdays at 6:30pm on Channel 18. She's also preaching, teaching, and singing on Preach the Word Network every Sunday at 8:30pm. At a recently held album release concert, a merchant approached Pastor Dennis to pay tribute for his mother at the memorial service to be held in July in Florida. She is supported by many friends and well-wishes but greatest of all is her husband and children. I wish that someone would call Oprah or some famous talk show personnel and make known to the world that God has ordained a special woman in Mt. Vernon. Pastor Thency Dennis-South
