Transmission Remove Transmission


Start By: a. remove fuel tank* b. remove air tank* c. remove alternator** d. remove fan drive** e. remove transmission oil filter base f. remove transmission oil and scavenge pump g. remove parking brake rotochamber *Refer to the "Machine Systems for 16H Motor Graders, SENR8599" for instructions on the removal of the fuel tank and the air tank. **Refer to the "Engine Supplement for 16H Motor Graders, SENR8601" for instructions on the removal of the alternator and the fan drive.

1. Drain the oil from the transmission and the coolant from the radiator. 2. Loosen hose clamps (3) on each end of tube assembly (2).

3. Remove bolt (1) that fastens the tube bracket to the flywheel housing. 4. Remove tube assembly (2). 5. Remove hose assembly (5). 6. Put identification on hoses (4) and (6) and disconnect them from the transmission relief control valve.

7. Remove bolts (7) and (9) that hold clips (8) to the electrical wiring harness.

8. Loosen nuts (12) and slide them over cables (10). 9. Remove bolts (13) that hold retainer (14) to the transmission housing. 10. Slide retainer (14) over cables (10). 11. Remove couplings (11) from the transmission housing with a screwdriver. 12. Lift the transmission control cables out of the notches in the links in the transmission control valves.

13. Fasten a hoist to the lifting plates on the transfer gear case. NOTE: Ensure that the engine is properly supported prior to the removal of the transmission. 14. Remove bolts (15).

15. Remove nuts (16) from the studs that fasten the transfer gear group to the carrier assembly of the differential and bevel gear group.

Typical Example

16. Remove transmission assembly (17). The weight of transmission assembly (17) is 907 Kg (2000 lb).

17. Remove seal (18) and (19) from transmission assembly (17).

18. Remove seal (20) from the carrier assembly.

NOTE: Inspect seals and make any replacements if needed. 1. Install O-ring seal (1) in the carrier assembly.

2. Install four seals (2) and (3) in the transmission assembly.

3. Fasten a hoist to the transmission assembly and put it in position on the carrier assembly of the differential and bevel gear group. 4. Install bolts (4). 5. Install nuts (5) on the studs.

Typical Example

6. Loosen nuts (7) on bolts (6) on each side of the machine. Turn bolts (6) away from the frame. Tighten nuts (7).

7. Put cables (9) in position in the links of the transmission control valves. 8. Push couplings (10) in position in the transmission. Tighten nuts (11) against the couplings. 9. Put retainer (8) in place over the couplings. 10. Install the bolts that hold retainer (8) to the transmission housing.

11. Install clips (12) on the electrical wiring harness with bolts (13) and (14).

12. Connect hoses (18) and (20) to the transmission relief control valve. 13. Connect hose assembly (19).

a. remove transmission

1. Remove plate (1) from the transmission case.

2. Remove directional selector link (2) and modulation link (3) from their respective spools.

3. Remove plates (4) and (5) from the hydraulic control valves. 4. Move four sleeves (6) free of the hydraulic control valves.

5. Install Tooling (A) on the hydraulic control group. 6. Remove bolts (7) and (8) which fasten the control group to the planetary group. The weight of the hydraulic control group is 41 Kg (90 lb).

7. Put identification on the sleeves as to their location for assembly purposes. Remove four sleeves (6) from the transmission case. 8. Remove O-ring seals (9) from the sleeves.

9. Remove eight bolts (11) from manifold and eleven nuts (10) from the studs. 10. Remove manifold (12). 11. Remove O-ring seals from manifold (12).

12. Turn the transmission in the vertical position as shown and remove O-ring seals (13) from the housing assembly. 13. Remove two bolts (14) and (15).

14. Install Tooling (B) and a hoist on the housing assembly and remove O-ring seal (16).

NOTE: For easier planetary transmission removal, make an alignment of lever (18) with piston assembly (17).

15. Remove the planetary transmission from the case. Weight is 386 Kg (850 lb). 16. Put the transmission on the floor in the horizontal position. Install Tooling (B) and a hoist on end plate (19). Lift the transmission and put it in the vertical position on block as shown.

17. Install Tooling (B) and a hoist on support assembly (20).

18. Lift the support assembly up high enough to bend the locks away from bolts (22). 19. Remove bolts (22), retainer (23) and locks that fasten carrier to gear (21).

20. Bend lock (25) away from nut (24).

21. Remove nut (24) from support assembly with Tool (C). NOTE: Hold the support assembly while it is in the press so it will not become damaged when the gear is removed.

22. Put the gear and support assembly on a press. With Tooling (D) and press remove support assembly from the gear. The weight of the gear is 25 Kg (55 lb). 23. Remove bearing cone (26) from the gear.

24. Install Tooling (E) on gear (21) and remove bearing cup (27).

25. Remove spacer (28) from the gear.

26. Turn the gear over on the opposite side and install Tooling (E) and remove bearing cup (29).

27. Remove ring (30) from the gear.

28. Remove spacer (31) and bearing cone (33) from support assembly (32).

29. Remove carrier (34) from inside support assembly (32). A hammer and a punch can be used to remove carrier (34).

30. Remove seal (35) from carrier (34).

31. If necessary, remove bearing (36) from support assembly (32). 32. Install Tooling (B) and a hoist on end plate (19) and lower the transmission assembly to the floor. The transmission is to be turned over.

33. Install Tooling (B) and hoist on housing assembly (38). Lift transmission assembly and put in the vertical position. 34. Remove bolts (37).

35. Lift housing assembly (38) enough to remove four plungers (40) and four springs (39). 36. Remove housing assembly (38). The weight is 39 Kg (86 lb).

37. Remove four O-ring seals (43) from housing assembly (38). 38. If necessary, remove four pins (42) and dowel (41) from housing assembly (38).

39. Remove ring (44) from flange assembly with Tool (F). 40. Remove cage (45) from the transmission assembly. 41. Remove ring (46) and bearing (47) from cage (45).

42. Remove dowels (48) from housing (49).

43. Bend locks (50) away from bolts (52). 44. Remove bolts (52) and locks (50) from the flange assembly. 45. Remove thirty bolts (51) and flange assembly (53) from the transmission assembly.

46. If necessary, remove dowels (54) from the flange.

NOTICE
Keep the disc assemblies and plates for the individual clutches in their original sequences with their respective clutch housing. The original disc assemblies are made with different friction material for different clutches and can not be mixed. Also some disc assemblies and clutch plates can be used again only in their original sequence. See Guideline For Reusable Parts, Form SEBF8013, for more information.

47. Remove five disc assemblies (55) and four plates (56). This is the parking brake assembly.

48. Remove gear (57) from the transmission assembly.

49. Remove piston (58) and cage assembly (59) from the transmission assembly.

50. Put the piston and cage assembly in position in the press. Install steel blocks as shown and put the five springs and retainer in compression. 51. Remove ring (60), retainer (61) and springs (62).

52. Remove piston (58) from cage assembly (59). 53. Remove bearing (63) from cage assembly (59). 54. Remove ring (64) and the O-ring seal that is under the ring from cage assembly (59). 55. Remove seal ring (65) from cage assembly (59).

57. Turn piston assembly (17) over and remove inserts (66) from piston assembly (17).

58. Remove balls (69), piston (67), six disc assemblies and six plates (68). This is the number "8" clutch pack.

59. Remove ring (70) with Tool (F). 60. Remove hub assembly (71).

61. Install Tooling (B) and a hoist in position and remove carrier assembly (72).

62. Remove the ring that holds bearing (73) in position in carrier housing (72). 63. Turn carrier housing (72) over and remove bearing from carrier housing (72) with a punch and hammer. 64. If necessary, remove dowels (74) from carrier housing (72).

65. Drive pins (76) in shafts (75) with a hammer and punch. 66. Remove shafts (75) from carrier housing (72) and pins (76) from shaft.

67. Remove gears (79), washers (77) and two bearing assemblies (78) per gear.

69. If necessary, remove inserts (82) and pins and dowels (84) from piston.

70. Remove gear (85) and five disc assemblies (86) and four plates (87). This is the number "7" clutch pack.

80. If necessary, remove the dowels (100) from each side of the housing assembly.

81. Remove springs (101) from piston and dowels (103) from the housing assembly. 82. Remove two disc assemblies (102) and plate (104) from the top of the piston. This is the number "five" clutch pack.

83. Remove gear (105) and piston (106) from the housing assembly.

84. Remove seal rings (107) and (108) from the piston.

85. Install Tooling (B) and a hoist on housing (109). Install Tooling (G) as shown to fasten piston to housing. 86. Remove the housing and piston as a unit. The weight of the assembly is 27 Kg (60 lb).

87. Remove Tooling (B) and turn the assembly on the opposite side. Remove Tooling (G) and piston (110).

88. Remove seal rings (111) and (112) from the piston.

89. Remove springs (116) and dowels (114) from the housing assembly. 90. Remove three disc assemblies (113) and two plates (115) from the gear. This is the number "4" clutch pack.

NOTICE
When the assembly is turned over, the planetary gears will slide out approximately 76.2 mm (3.0 in). The assembly will not come apart at this time.

91. Install Tooling (B) on assembly with two 1/2 in 13 NC x 4 in Bolts. 92. Install a hoist and slowly turn the assembly over and put in position on blocks. The weight of the assembly is 95 Kg (209 lb).

93. Remove end plate (117) and springs (118) from the housing assembly.

94. Remove three disc assemblies (119) and two plates (120) from the housing assembly. This is the number "3" clutch pack.

95. Remove ring (121) from the shaft with Tool (F). 96. Remove retainer (122). 97. Remove carrier assembly (123) with two persons. The weight of the assembly is 23 Kg (51 lb).

98. Drive pins (125) in shafts (124) with a hammer and a punch. 99. Remove shafts (124) from the carrier assembly and the pins from the shaft.

100. Remove gears (128), washers (126) and two bearing assemblies (127) per gear.

101. Remove gear (129) and piston (130) from the housing assembly.

102. Remove seal rings (131) and (132) from piston (130).

103. Remove housing assembly (133) from the transmission assembly.

104. Remove four dowels (134) from housing assembly (133), if necessary.

105. Hit two pins (135) with a hammer and a punch until the pins are even with the surface of the carrier. 106. Put ring (137) in compression and remove gear (136) and ring (137).

107. Put the assembly in the horizontal position as shown and remove ring (139) from the shaft with Tool (F). 108. Remove gear (138). The weight of assembly is 29 Kg (64 lb).

109. Remove spacer (140) and gear (141) from the shaft.

110. Remove ring (142) from gear (141). 111. Remove cage (143) and bearing (144) from the gear. Remove bearing (144) from cage (143).

112. Remove shaft assembly (145) from the carrier assembly. The weight of the shaft assembly is 27 Kg (60 lb).

113. Remove gear (146) from the carrier assembly.

114. Put the carrier assembly in the vertical position. 115. Bend locks (147) from the bolts and remove the bolts and locks (147). 116. Remove cage (149) and cage assembly (148) from the carrier assembly.

117. Remove seal ring (150) from cage assembly (148).

118. Remove ring (151) and bearing (152) from the carrier assembly.

119. Drive pins (154) in shafts with a hammer and a punch. 120. Remove the shafts from the carrier assembly and pins (154) from the shaft.

121. Remove gears (153), washers (155) and two bearing assemblies (156) per gear.

Assemble Transmission

1. Inspect all transmission components and make replacements if necessary.

2. Install two bearing assemblies (156) in each of the eight carrier gears (153). 3. Install gears (153) in carrier housing with washers (155) on each side of gears.

NOTICE
Be sure rubber in the pins that hold shafts (157) in the carrier is not damaged. If rubber is damaged, a replacement of the pins must be made.

4. Install shafts (157) in carrier housing to hold gears in place. Make sure the holes in the shafts are in alignment with holes in the carrier. Install the pins (154) that hold the shafts in the carrier.

5. Install ring (151) on bearing (152). Install the bearing and ring in carrier with the notch (158) in the bearing in the top side.

Figure 1. Correct Method To Make New Rings Ready For Installation.

NOTE: There is a correct method to make the new rings ready for installation. Use your hands on each end of the ring to pull the ends several inches by each other. Figure 1. Use care to keep the ring shape like a circle. This makes an even bend (or ring "set") all the way around the ring.

Figure 2. The Ends Of The Ring Must Make Contact With The Inner Notches.

NOTE: When the ring is in the groove, the notches in the ends must be fully engaged with each other so the ring will not make contact with the edge of the cage bore. That is, the notches must be fully engaged and the ends must be together. See Figure 2.

NOTE: Do Not bend the ring as shown in Figure 3. This does not make an even bend all the way around the ring.

6. Install ring (150) on cage assembly (148).

7. Install cage assembly (148) in bearing with ball (159) in alignment with notch (158)

8. Put cage (149) on carrier and install locks (147) and bolts. Bend the locks on bolts.

9. Install shaft assembly (145) in the carrier assembly. Install gear (146) on shaft. It may be necessary to turn the carrier gears so gear (146) will go in its seat. The weight of the shaft assembly is 27 Kg (60 lb).

10. Heat bearing (144) to a temperature of 135 C (275 F). Install bearing on cage (159). 11. Put cage and gear in position in gear (141) and install ring that holds gear and bearing in place.

12. Install spacer (140) on shaft.

13. Install gear (138) and ring in position on shaft with Tool (A).

70. Put the piston and cage assembly in position in a press. Install retainer (61) on top of springs. Install steel blocks as shown and put the five springs and retainer air compression. Install ring (60) on cage and remove steel blocks.

71. Install the piston and cage assembly (164) in position in gear and on piston.

73. Install four dowels (54) in flange (53) to a height of 7.11 mm (.28 in).

74. Put flange (53) in position on gear. Make sure the dowels in the flange are in alignment with the gear and the piston and cage assembly. 75. Install bolts (51). Tighten bolts (51) to a torque of 52 3 Nm (38 2 lb ft). 76. Install locks (50) and the bolts. Bend the locks against the bolts.

82. Turn housing assembly over and install Tooling (B) and a hoist. Put housing assembly in place and install springs (39) and plungers (40). Remove Tooling (B).

83. Install bolts (168) and (169). Tighten bolts (124) to a torque of 115 7 Nm (85 5 lb ft).

84. Put oil in all the clutch ports. Use Tool (F) and air with pressure of 690 - 1030 kPa (100 - 150 psi) to check the function of the clutch pistons. There must be 1/81/4 3 - 6 mm ( - in.) of movement in each piston. If a piston does not move, it can have a broken seal, or is assembled wrong. The transmission must be disassembled to find the cause. 85. See photo B55352P1 to check clutch assemblies "three" through "seven".

86. Put the transmission on the floor in the horizontal position. Install Tooling (B) and a hoist on end plate (19). Lift the transmission and put it in the vertical position on blocks as shown.

87. Install bearing in support (32) with Tooling (E). The bearing is installed to a depth of 1.5 mm (.06 in) from the end of the support. The diameter of the bearings must be 41.224 .038 mm (1.6230 .0015 in) after installation in the support.

88. Install seal on carrier (34).

Put the transmission on the floor in the horizontal position. Install Tooling (B) and a hoist on end plate (19). Lift the transmission and put it in the vertical position.

106. Install Tooling (B) and a hoist on housing assembly. The weight of the transmission is 386 Kg (850 lb). Put the transmission in position in the case. Make an alignment of lever (18) with the notch (174) in piston (17). Lower the transmission in position and install two bolts (175) that hold the transmission in case. 107. Install O-ring seal (16) in position on transmission. Remove Tooling (B). 108. Install O-ring seals (13) on the housing assembly.

109. Turn the transmission in position as shown. Install two O-ring seals (176) in manifold and two seals (177) in support. Install manifold (12) on the case assembly.
