Using Basic Graphs & Transformations to Draw Pictures and Create Designs
The purpose of this project is for you to draw a picture or create a design that incorporates many of the function families that we have studied in class as well as your knowledge of transformations (vertical shifts (k), horizontal shifts (h) and stretches (a). You will create equations that, when graphed, will create your picture. Here is a list of the Function Families that you can/must use: 1. y = x LINEAR: this includes sloping (y=mx+b) horizontal (y=c) and vertical (x=c) 2. y = | x | ABSOLUTE VALUE 2 3. y = x QUADRATIC (parabolic) 4. y = x3 POLYNOMIAL (this is an example of a cubic) 5. y = x RADICAL (square root) x 6. y = b EXPONENTIAL (note the teacher example has b = 2, you can use what ever base you would like 7. y = logbx LOGARITHMIC (same note as exponential) 8. y = sin x PERIODIC (note the teacher example uses a sine wave, you can use cosine or tangent if you would like. Requirements: 1. You must use at least 20 different functions. 2. You must use some sort of transformation on (a, h, and / or k) for at least 15 of your functions. 3. You must include the domain and range of each function you graph. 4. Your picture or design must be recognizable. What You Will Turn In When Finished: THIS SHEET ON TOP WITH YOUR NAME ON IT AND THE FOLLOWING STAPPLED IN THIS ORDER: 1. An artistic rendering of your picture with the functions graphed and the picture colored in. 2. A hand drawn sketch of your picture with each graphed function labeled with the number of the function it is on your list (see number 2 below). 3. A list of all the functions (equations) you used in your drawing numbered so that I can find that graph on your picture. For example: 1.) y = 2x + 3 2.) y = (3x+2)2 - 2 3.) y = | x 2 | + 3 4. A paragraph reflection discussing the following: a) what you liked about this project. b) what you disliked about this project. c) what you learned while doing this project. d) what problems you encountered while doing this project. e) any other comments you would like to share.
