LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
It’s great to have you all here with us again –
May is Women’s Riding Month, honoring the ladies who found the
freedom to enjoy life behind their own bars…handlebars that is. Ladies,
especially during the month of May, ride as much as you can to work
or to play. Show the world that women don’t always have to be on the
back of a motorcycle – we can ride our own too! Girlfriends, grab those
handlebars, crank it up & let’s hit the road!
The month of April was “off the hook” with all the rides & events that
were held throughout Virginia & Maryland. The 3rd weekend of last
month had set the record for the most events listed in 1 weekend within
the region! There were so many different events concentrated into it,
which was great but the problem for most riders was trying to decide
which one to go to…it was crazy! I encourage everyone who is an event
coordinator to check our calendar when setting dates for your events. It
seems like there are certain weekends that are packed & then others,
there isn’t much going on at all. If the events are spread out a little more,
it will boost participation for your event & your charity will be able to raise
more money since you’re not “competing” with other events within your
areas. It is difficult sometimes to go to 2 events in 1 day to enjoy the
full scope of activities that each has to offer. There are 35 weekends
between the months of March & October which are the prime riding
months throughout the Mid-Atlantic. With the mild temperatures we’ve
experienced throughout the past few years, the months of November
through February shouldn’t be ruled out when selecting a date. Even if
the temperatures get a little chilly during those months, you’d be surprised
at the number of “year round” riders there are who are always looking for
a reason to ride, even though they really don’t ever need one.
There are so many different charities out there & we here at Thunder
Roads would like to support as many of them as possible. We ride too
but cannot always make it out to participate in the many events on the
calendar, to do our part in helping those in need. There is a way that
we can still contribute even if we can’t be there in person. If you have
a charity event that you’d like to advertise with a print ad within our
magazine, drop me an email or call (my info is on our staff page), & I can
tell you about a special program that we now have available exclusively
for charity/fundraising events. To help get the maximum exposure of
your event, I encourage everyone to submit your event info on the events
page of our website www.thunderroads-virginia.com, as early as possible
(some are posted many months in advance). It’s totally FREE to have
it posted there & most importantly, it’s the only way that it will appear in
the print version of our magazine. If submitted by the 15th of any given
month, it will appear in the next’s month’s magazine. If you have a flyer
for your event, we can post it for you on the Let’s Ride page of our site for
only $5. Let us help you, help those in need.
Within the last few weeks, I’ve gotten wind of several accidents
involving not only guys but also a few lady riders on their motorcycles
- most were alcohol related & did not involve another vehicle. Just as
drinking & driving don’t mix, drinking & riding.don’t mix either. I’m not here
to lecture about the risks & dangers of that combo because you all know
what they are. Many of you have had friends go down or even killed
because of that same scenario. You know your drinking limits but if you
find yourself going “full throttle”, make sure that you’re not behind yours…
Please drink responsibly. Look out for
your friends & don’t be afraid to take their
keys…you’ll be glad you did & they’ll thank
you for it later!

May 2nd Freedom Ride for Dystonia (Poker Run/Event)
Laurel, MD The poker run will start and end at Old Glory Harley-
Davidson, 11800 Laurel Bowie Road, Laurel MD 20708. Ride registration
will open at 9:30 a.m. and cost $30. The last bike must be back by 2
p.m. to qualify for the $250 grand prize for the best poker hand. An event
will be held after the ride, featuring food, a live band, vendors, door
prizes and a raffle. The first 100 ride registrants get a free T-shirt, and
ride registration includes admission to the event. Admission to the event
without the ride will cost $20. All proceeds go to the Dystonia Medical

approved our request to hold an event inside the Capitol complex. Bikers

Teddy Bear Run-Baltimore, MD Sisters of Chrome Women’s Motorcycle
Club (SOCWMC) is sponsoring the First Maryland Trauma Teddy Bear
Run on June 6th. The event starts with a 20+ mile police escorted
motorcycle ride leaving the the Harley Davidson Store, 8845 Pulaski
Hwy, Baltimore, MD at 12:00 noon and ending at Long Beach Restaurant
and Tavern on Bowley’s Quarters Road. All ride participants will need to
register on the day of the event between 10:30 and 11:30 at the HD Store
and must bring a NEW teddy bear to donate to the cause. SOCWMC
will also be selling Bears prior to the ride for those requiring one. At the
end of the ride, all bikes will have secure parking at the Volunteer Fire
Department lot next door to the Long Beach Restaurant. Free Shuttle
busses are provided for car parking at St. Johns Business park located
on route 43. Middle River MD 21220. Please note that a TICKET is
required to enter the event at Long Beach and can be purchased for
$20.00 in advance or $25.00 at the gate. The gate opens at 11:00 a.m.
for those not participating in the ride. We are excited that the lead singer,
Fran Cosmo from BOSTON and Anthony Cosmo - songwriter & guitarist
of BOSTON will be playing as well as 3 other live local bands throughout

The doors of the Roanoke exhibition center opened to the

public at 3:00 pm Friday afternoon to a steady stream of bike
enthusiasts that couldn’t wait to get inside. That line didn’t thin
out until Sunday near the end of the event. It was obvious that
the Roanoke Valley was thirsty for a bike rally as thousands of
people poured through the turnstiles. “The Blue Ridge Bike Fest”
was the first bike event in the area in years and was well put
together and produced by Sponsor Hounds LLC.
Several live bands and local, live radio remotes kept the tunes going all weekend.
Spectators were treated to some fine custom bikes in the bike show as well as those brought
in by shops and dealerships. Vendors of every kind were set up throughout the venue. You
could get anything from a rack of ribs, which were pretty dang tasty, to a new tattoo. The
wheelie machine was set-up out front of the center for those that wanted to test their skills
and there was a dyno set-up if you were curious as to how much horse power that latest part
had added.
The bikini contest, held Friday & Saturday evenings, was a big crowd pleaser with nearly
20 young ladies competing for the title of “Miss Blue Ridge Bike Fest” as well as the cash &
other goodies that went along with it.
Outside in the parking lot a large area had been fenced off for “The Star Boyz” motorcycle
stunt team. The large area really gave ‘em room to work and they consistently amazed the
crowds all weekend.
Back inside, against the wall, was a line of used bikes that people had brought in for sale
and Sunday there was an area set aside for swap meet tables. You got a weekend pass to
all this motorcycle mayhem for only $10… very affordable entertainment and a lot of bang for
your buck. Not to mention that the event happens in the middle of the crooked roads of the
Blue Ridge Mountains, what more could you ask for.
Sponsor Hounds is already planning for next year and they promise that the whole deal
is going to be bigger and better yet. If you missed it this year you should put it on the calendar

children, Bikers Against Drunk Drivers
rides, and this year’s USO Freedom
Ride in Hampton Roads, Va., to benefit
the USO of Hampton Roads.
In April, mid-Atlantic riders came to
the aid of Children’s Hospital of The
King’s Daughters and the USO of Hampton Roads at GEICO Powersports’ Bikers for Tykes & Troops Rally in Virginia Beach and they
brought their many friends with them.
For the fourth year, GEICO Powersports sponsored a weekend event in Virginia to draw music fans, motorcycle enthusiasts and families
looking for fun, in which GEICO donated the proceeds of, to the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters and the USO of Hampton
Roads.
“Each year it gets more and more exciting to take part in the Bikers for Tykes Rally,” said Joe Thomas, GEICO regional vice president,
“and this year we are especially proud to be a partner as we welcome the USO of Hampton Roads to our fundraising efforts. The work that
The King’s Daughters and the USO do to ensure that children and families stay fit and healthy is invaluable. GEICO is proud to be a part of
these efforts.”
More than a dozen local new and returning sponsors signed up quickly
to make the rally the most successful yet. Among them were: the pre-
senting sponsor, Liberty Tax Service, Ocean Breeze Waterpark, Bayside
Harley-Davidson, Thunder Roads/Mid-Atlantic, KOA Campgrounds,
Holiday Trav-L-Park, Johnny Pag Motorcycles, Knuckleheads Roadhouse,
Budweiser, and several media outlets including 92.9 The WAVE, 100.5
MAX-FM, 1310 A.M. ESPN, STAR 94.1 FM WXEZ, 97.3 EAGLE, and MyTVZ
Cable Channel 2.
Heading the list of weekend highlights was the USO Freedom Ride that
began on April 18 at Bayside Harley Davidson and headed for the 2009
Bikers for Tykes & Troops Rally at KOA Kampgrounds. All participants
received complimentary admission to the Rally and were automatically
entered to win MAX-FM’s and the USO of Hampton Roads’ 2009 Freedom
Chopper.
When they got there, the riders and other weekend guests didn’t
have to decide which music to enjoy, country or rock ‘n roll. Attendees
enjoyed the high energy of the rock band Butter, country music from
Tailgate Down, party music from the band Bullwinkle, and rock from the
cover group Suburban Key Party. Tuesday’s Gone also provided lively
entertainment and Grant Austin Taylor brought his guitar and songwrit-
ing talents to the stage.
Families got into the fun, too, when kids and even their parents joined
in the Guitar Hero contests. Riders got a chance to meet stunt competi-
tor Kane “Insane” Friesen and he had a chance to show off his stunt and
safety skills. Big Rick Hoffman also spent time with the riders discuss-
ing the finer points of some of the famous custom choppers he’s built
and went over his plans for new bikes that are still on his drawing board.
All in all there was a little something for everyone and the thousands
that attended enjoyed every moment. For more information on this

Soft Tissue Injuries
Have you ever wondered why when you cut, scrape, or
puncture your skin that some areas of your body bleed
more than others? It all has to do with how vascular the
area is that the wound occurred. For example, your scalp
is very vascular; a cut on someone’s head can sometimes
bleed profusely. Whereas, a cut on your knee or knuckle
can be easily stopped by a little pressure. When we speak
of Soft Tissue Injuries, there are several kinds. Laceration,
puncture, abrasion, avulsion, contusion and amputations.
A laceration is simply a cut, a puncture wound is a hole in
the skin, an abrasion is a scrape, an avulsion is a flap of
skin torn away, and a contusion is a bruise. If you remem-
ber from one of our past articles, a bruise is a collection of
blood under the skin that is what gives them their discolor-
ation. There are various ways to receive these injuries, cut
with a sharp instrument, stabbed with a sharp or dull instru-
ment, road rash, hit with a blunt object, and so on. What to
do, If the bleeding is slow dark red blood known as venous
blood, then it can be stopped easily by applying direct pres-
sure with a sterile dressing or piece of cloth. If it is a large
wound, it may take several dressings or pieces of cloth to
control. If the wound is spurting bright red blood also known
as arterial blood, this may pose more of a control problem
as it is much more serious. Tight direct pressure must be
performed and it will most likely take several dressings or
pieces of cloths to handle for they will get saturated with
blood more than a venous bleed. Abrasions can pose a
different type of problem especially if it covers a large area.
An abrasion can be just like a burn, and if not cleaned and
bandaged properly, can become infected sometimes easier
than other injuries. Try to cover an abrasion with a sterile
dressing or cloth; you may see clear fluid as well as venous
blood from an abrasion. As stated above, contusions (bruis-
es) are a collection of blood under the skin usually caused
by hitting or being struck by a blunt object. The best way to
manage a contusion is to apply ice or direct pressure with
your hand if it starts to swell. Other than that, just observe
the site for enlargement or pain. Although amputations can
be very dramatic, they are also unique because if not man-
gled to severely, most can be reattached. If possible, pack
the amputated part in ice and transport it with the patient. If
no ice is available, wrap it in a clean cloth or dressing. All
wounds of concern should be seen by a medical profes-
sional. However, before you take that trip to the doctor, or
before the paramedics arrive, try to stop the bleeding, clean
the wound, bandage the wound, and stay calm. If you get a
wound, especially an arterial bleed, that you cannot suc-
cessfully stop, try elevating the wound above the plain of

 Nails in the Fence
There once was a little boy who had a bad temper. His Father gave
him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper,
he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence. The first day the
boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks,
as he learned to control his anger & the number of nails hammered
daily gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold
his temper than to drive those nails into the fence. Finally the day
came when the boy didn’t lose his temper at all. He told his father
about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail
for each day that he was able to hold his temper. The days passed
and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the
nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him to
the fence. He said, “You have done well, my son, but look at the
holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say
things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a
knife in a man and draw it out. It won’t matter how many times you
say I’m sorry, the wound is still there. “ A verbal wound is as bad
as a physical one. Friends are very rare jewels, indeed. They make
you smile and encourage you to succeed. They lend an ear, they
share words of praise and they always want to open their hearts to
us.” Try to forgive if someone has ever left a hole.

MOTHER’S FINEST LIME SHRIMP w/ ASPARAGUS
3/4 lbs. Fresh Asparagus; trimmed and cut into 2-inch
pieces
1 Garlic Clove, Minced
2 Tbls. Water
3/4 lb., Frozen, Pre-Cooked, Large Shrimp
1 Medium Sweet Red Pepper, thinly sliced
1 Jalapeno Pepper, Seeded & Finely Chopped
1 tsp. Cornstarch
2 Tbls. Soy Sauce
2 Tbl. Lime Juice
1/2 tsp. Grated Lime Peel
Place the asparagus, garlic and water in a 1-1/2 qt. micro-
wave-safe dish. Cover and nuke on high for 3-4 minutes
or until asparagus is crisp-tender. Remove with a slotted
spoon; keep warm. Run cold water over your shrimp in a
collander until unfrozen, but firm. Add shrimp, red pepper
and jalapeno to dish. Cover and nuke on high for 3 min. or
until shrimp turns pink. Remove with a slotted spoon; keep
warm. In a small bowl, whisk the cornstarch, soy sauce,
lime juice and lime peel until blended; stir into the cooking
juices. Nuke, uncovered, on high for 1 min. or until sauce
is thickened and bubbly. Stir in all “keep warm” ingredi-
ents. Nuke for 30 seconds until everything heated through.
Serve over piping hot yellow rice.
MOMMA’S ROASTED JALAPENO DRESSING
3 Jalapenos
2 Cloves Garlic, Chopped
2 Tablespoons Rice Vinegar
Grated Zest and Juice of 2 Limes
1/4 Cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
2 tsps. Cilantro, Chopped
Add Some Ground Pepper
Add ingredients to a mason jar, cover tightly and shake em’ Mix it up and serve it up. Tastes great on those Keebler’s
up.

1-3/4 Cups Whole Milk
1 Cup Whipping Cream
1/3 Cup Buttermilk
1-1/2 Tbls. Unsalted Butter
1 Cup Stone-Ground White Cornmeal
1/3 Cup Freshly Grated Parmesan Cheese
1-1/3 tsp. Baking Powder
2/3 tsp. Baking Soda
4 Large Eggs, Separated
4 tsps. Chopped Fresh Chives
2 tsps. Sugar
2/3 tsp. Salt
Heat first 4 ingredients in a heavy saucepan over med.-
high heat up until boiling, but do not boil. Remove from
heat (mixture will curdle.) Combine cornmeal and Par-
mesan cheese in a large bowl. Pour milk mixture over
cornmeal mixture, whisking until smooth. Let stand 30
min. or until lukewarm. Stir in baking powder and bak-
ing soda. Beat egg yolks lightly, and stir into cornmeal
mixture. Fold in the chives. Beat egg whites, sugar, and
salt at high speed with electric mixer until stiff peaks from.
Carefully fold into cornmeal mixture. Pour into a buttered
13 x 9 baking dish. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 min. or
until top is golden brown and toothpick inserted in middle
comes out clean. You must serve spoonbread fresh from
the oven. My “Grammy” used to make this for special din-
ners and all us kids gobbled it up.

 A husband and wife decided they needed to use “code” to indicate
that they wanted to have sex without letting their children in on it. They
decided on the word “Typewriter”. One day the husband told his five
year old daughter, “Go tell your mommy that daddy needs to type
a letter”. The child told her mother what her dad said, and her mom
responded, “Tell your daddy that he can’t type a letter right now cause
there is a red ribbon in the typewriter.” The child went back to tell her
father what mommy said. A few days later the mom told the daughter,
“Tell daddy that he can type that letter now.” The child told her father,
returned to her mother and announced, “Daddy said never mind with
the typewriter, he already wrote the letter by hand”.
A man walks into a pharmacy and wanders up and down the aisles.
The sales girl notices him and asks him if she can help him. He
answers that he is looking for a box of tampons for his wife. She
directs him down the correct aisle. A few minutes later, he deposits a
huge bag ofcotton balls and a ball of string on the counter. She says,
confused, “Sir, I thought you were looking for some tampons for your
wife? He answers, “ You see, it’s like this, yesterday, I sent my wife to
the store to get me a carton of cigarettes, and she came back with a tin
of tobacco and some rolling papers; cause it’s sooooo much cheaper.
So, I figure if I have to roll my own, so does she.
A man goes to the minister at his church. “Reverend,” he said, “we
have problem. My wife keeps falling asleep during your sermons. It’s
very embarrassing, not to mention disrespectful. What can I do?”
“I’ve noticed this and have an idea if you’re up to the task,” said the
minister. “Take this hatpin with you. I can see when Mrs. Jones is
sleeping, and I will motion to you. When I motion, you give her a good
poke in the leg with the hatpin.” In church the following Sunday, Mrs.
Jones dozed off. Noticing this, the preacher put his plan to work. “And
who made the ultimate sacrifice for you?” he said, nodding to Mr.
Jones. ”Jesus!” Mrs. Jones cried out as her husband jabbed her in the
leg with the sharp hatpin. “Yes! You are correct, Mrs. Jones!” came the
minister’s quick reply. Mrs. Jones then turned and glared angrily at her
husband. Soon, Mrs. Jones again nodded off. The minister noticed.
“Who is your redeemer?” he asked the congregation, motioning
toward Mr. Jones. “My God!” howled Mrs. Jones as she was stuck
again with the pin. “Right again!” bellowed the minister, a slight grin
on his face. Mrs. Jones again gave her husband a real hard threatening
glare. Before long though she again nodded off. This time however the
minister did not notice. As he picked up the tempo of his sermon, he
made a few hand gestures that Mr. Jones mistook as signals to sharply
poke his wife with the hatpin again. The minister asked, “And what did
Eve say to Adam after she bore him his 99th son? Mrs. Jones jumped
up and shouted, “You stick that dang thing in me one more time and
I’ll break it in half and shove it where the sun don’t shine!” “AMEN!”

The cop got out of his car and the kid who was stopped for speeding
rolled down his window. “I’ve been waiting for you all day,” the cop
said. The kid replied, “Yeah, well I got here as fast as I could”. When
the cop finally stopped laughing, he sent the kid on his way without a

One day, Harry came upon a big, long ladder that stretched into the
clouds. He’d walked this way every day and this ladder was never
there before. Curious and brave, he began to climb. Eventually, he
climbed into the layer of clouds, and saw this rather large, homely
woman lying here on a cloud. She spoke, “Take me now or climb the
ladder to success!” Harry figured success had to be better than this,
so he continued climbing. He came upon another level of clouds,
and found a thinner, cuter woman than before. She also spoke, “Take
me now or climb the ladder to success!” Harry saw that his luck was
changing and so continued his climb. On another level of clouds,
he found a rather attractive woman with not so bad of a figure. She
stated, “Take me now or climb the ladder to success!” Harry really
liked his advantage now! He climbed quickly and deftly, and sure
enough, on the next level, he found a gorgeous, lithe, well-endowed
woman lying seductively on the cloud. “Take me now or climb the
ladder to success,” she huskily whispered. Harry couldn’t believe
his eyes, but his greed got the best of him. He climbed to the next
level, expecting Aphrodite or similar. Suddenly, the ladder ends, and
a latch closes behind him. He looks over to see a 400 pound, 6’8”
hairy biker- looking guy with tattoos. The biker gets up and walks
menacingly toward Harry. Apprehensively, Harry whispers, “Who are
you?” The biker answers, “I’m Cess.”
Two women go out on a girls night out, walking home they are both
dying for a piss so they jump over a wall into a cemetery to relieve
themselves. ‘Course, there’s no toilet paper, so one wipes on her
knickers and throws them away. The other one tears a ribbon from a
bouquet and uses that. Next day the two husbands are talking. The
first says “I’m really worried about my wife, she came home with no
knickers last night. The other said “You’re worried? Mine came home
with a card stuck up her arse!” “It said `from all the guys at the fire
station, we’ll never forget you’.
A blonde calls Delta Airlines and asks, “Can you tell me how long it’ll
take to fly from San Francisco to New York City?” The agent replies,
“Just a minute...” “Thank you,” the blonde says, and hangs up.
This tall blonde is standing at the opening to a bike show with her
favorite GUESS tee-shirt on. This squeaky little biker walks by and
says, “I’d have to say implants”. (she “implanted” her boot on him).
Two very elderly ladies were enjoying the sunshine on a park bench
in Miami. They had been meeting at that park every sunny day, for
over 12 years, chatting and enjoying each others’ friendship. One
day, the younger of the two ladies, turns to the other and says,
“Please don’t be angry with me dear, but I am embarrassed. After all
these years, what is your name? I am trying to remember, but I just
can’t.” The older friend stares at her, looking very distressed, says
nothing for 2 full minutes, and finally says, “How soon do you have
to know?”

Harley-Davidson has declared May as Women Riders Month!This May the rumble from those April showers will continue a little longer as thousands of
female riders will be hitting the open road to celebrate the first-ever Women Riders Month.
Throughout the month of May, Harley-Davidson is staging a series of events designed to celebrate the number of women who have already hit the
open road on two wheels, as well as to encourage even more women to get behind the handlebars. Two of the larger Harley-Davidson Women Riders
Month initiatives include:
• Activities for the 3rd Annual International Female Ride Day on Friday, May 1, 2009, which was founded by Vicki Gray of Motoress.com. The day
celebrates women of all ages who take life by the handlebars by encouraging them to ride. Harley-Davidson plans to stage special rides in New York City
and Milwaukee to commemorate International Female Ride Day. Harley-Davidson dealerships, subsidiaries and suppliers across the world have been
encouraged to plan rides in their areas.
• Encouraging 100,000 women to learn to ride either by taking the Harley-Davidson Rider’s Edge New Rider Course or the Motorcycle Safety Founda-
tion (MSF) Basic RiderCourseSM training program. Several Rider’s Edge New Rider Courses and MSF Basic RiderCourses are scheduled for the first
weekend of May. To kick-off this initiative, a Guinness World Record will be set for the number of women motorcycle riders trained in one weekend during
the first weekend of May. For information on the Rider’s Edge New Rider Course or a MSF Basic RiderCourse visit your local Harley-Davidson dealer-

“Women have been enjoying the sport of motorcycling for the last century,” said Leslie Prevish, women’s outreach manager, Harley-Davidson. “In

Month, we’re honoring all of the women who enjoy the freedom and
adventure found in taking control of their own handlebars.”
In the past 20 years, the percentage of women who have pur-
chased new Harley-Davidson motorcycles has tripled, with women
now accounting for nearly 12% of new Harley-Davidson motorcycle
purchases.
“We know there are thousands of women who are interested in the
sport, but aren’t sure where to start,” said Prevish. “We are encourag-
ing women to learn how to ride a motorcycle to increase the women
rider community and help them along their journey.”

NEW MOTORCYCLE AND SCOOTER SALES SET RE-
CORDS Despite the economy, U.S. sales of new motorcy-
cles in 2008 still topped the one-million mark, and did so for
the sixth straight year. That beats the longest run of million-
plus sales ever recorded by the Motorcycle Industry Coun-
cil, during the five years from 1970 to 1974. Also, scooter
sales last year reached their highest annual level ever. The
MIC’s preliminary estimate for all motorcycles and scooters
sold nationwide in 2008 is 1,087,000, down just 3.3 percent
compared to 2007. The MIC is currently estimating 2008
scooter sales at 222,000, a new record. Back in 1992, total
motorcycle and scooter sales combined were just 278,000.
“All in all, our industry has not declined as precipitously
as many others,” said MIC President Tim Buche. “Many
Americans certainly want motorcycles, both for recreation
and transportation. When they aren’t buying now, it’s down
to personal economics, not desire.” While total sales have
declined slightly during the past two years, they are fol-
lowing in the tracks of some very big years. There were
1,124,000 new bikes sold in 2007. In 2006, that number
was 1,190,000, the biggest year for motorcycle sales in
more than three decades. The record for most new bikes
sold in a year is 1.5 million, back in 1973.
CONGRESS CONSIDERS MOTORCYCLE SAFETY
MONTH A Congressional committee has passed a bill en-
couraging all road users to be more aware of motorcyclists
and their safety, and encourages motorcyclists to take rider
training and practice safe riding skills. House Resolution
269, a bill entitled “Supporting the goals of a motorcycle
safety month”, received unanimous approval from members
of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Trans-
portation and Infrastructure. The resolution is co-sponsored
by Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ), an avid rider who is co-
chair of the Congressional Motorcycle Safety Caucus, and
caucus co-chair Rep. Michael Burgess M.D. (R-TX). The
measure now goes to the House floor for a full vote.
INTERNATIONAL FEMALE RIDE DAY -- MAY 1st Women
riders are hitting the road in record numbers, with the latest
statistics showing that 12.6% of motorcyclists and scoot-
erists are now women, a 29% increase from 2003. Now,
the ladies even have their own day to kickstart the riding
season! Flagged for the first Friday of May each year, Inter-
national Female Ride Day has become the globally syn-
chronized day for women to -- just ride! Supported by the
motorcycle industry around the world, it now encompasses
a range of international cultures and locations including
Canada, United States, South Africa, Australia, Greece and
the UK to name but a few, with Poland joining in this year.
In conjunction with International Female Ride Day, Harley-
Davidson Motor Co. has declared May as the first-ever
Women Riders Month and has planned a series of events
around the world to celebrate the ever-growing numbers of
female riders hitting the highway and to encourage more
ladies to take life by the handlebars. Harley-Davidson is
also encouraging women to learn to ride via either the

Harley-Davidson Rider’s Edge New Rider Course or the
Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic RiderCourse training
program, and is backing a Guinness World Record attempt
for the number of women motorcycle riders trained in one
weekend during the first weekend of May.
CALIFORNIA SMOG CHECK BILL PASSES COMMITTEE
Most motorcycles would have to pass the same smog
inspections as cars and trucks under legislation approved
by a California legislative committee. SB 435, introduced
by Senator Fran Pavley, passed the Senate Transportation
Committee on April 14 and has been referred next to the
Senate Appropriations Committee. The measure seeks to
include motorcycles in the state’s Smog Check Program be-
ginning in 2012 and would cover about 72%of all motorcy-
cles in the state -- year 2000 and newer models with large,
class-three engines. No state currently requires motorcycles
to undergo regular emissions testing, since motorcyclists in
Arizona and Kentucky successfully lobbied to end such test
procedures.
MILITARY REQUESTS MANDATORY TRAINING FOR
CIVILIANS Combat injury or death are always possibilities
in a war, but last year more U.S. Marines were killed here at
home while off-duty riding motorcycles than from enemy fire
in Iraq, prompting all military branches to require comple-
tion of rider training courses and mandatory personal safety
equipment on and off base. Now, in a move encouraged
by military leaders at different Armed Forces bases, a bill
is making its way through the North Carolina legislature
that would extend the mandatory training requirement to
civilians, making it tougher and more expensive to get a
motorcycle license. The legislation, Senate Bill 64, passed
the State Senate on March 11. It would take effect July 1,
2010 and require would-be motorcyclists to pass a safety
class before they can get a motorcycle endorsement on
their licenses. The bill, which is currently pending in the
state House, would also prevent riders from taking advan-
tage of the “perpetual” learners permit by making it valid
for just 6 months with a rider having one year to get a full
motorcycle endorsement or quit riding. It’s estimated there
are 48,000 motorcycle riders in the Department of the Navy,
many of them choosing sport bikes which are designed for
speed. Nationwide, the military lost 41 people to motor-
cycle crashes in fiscal 2001. That tripled to 124 in 2008.
WASHINGTON STATE BIKERS PROTEST WSP SUR-
VEILLANCE A motorcycle rights group is demanding an-
swers from the Washington State Patrol. During an annual
rally at the Capitol this year in Olympia, a state trooper was
seen on video as he recorded the license plates of those
visiting their elected officials. The sergeant was seen wan-
dering through the parking lot and using a voice recorder to
take down the license plate numbers from motorcycles as
their owners were inside the statehouse advocating for is-
sues important to them. Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.)
Attorney Martin D. Fox, a Seattle lawyer representing

several local motorcycle groups, is spearheading an inquiry
into the incident and wrote an angry letter to Governor Chris
Gregoire protesting the WSP’s January 22nd surveillance
activity, noting; “I may be old school, but I always thought
that the Capitol was supposed to be a sanctuary for free
speech and assembly, and not an opportunity for clandes-
tine intelligence gathering on citizens trying to be involved in
the political process.” Fox, an attorney for ABATE of Wash-
ington and legal counsel for the Washington Confederation
of Clubs, distributed his letter to numerous Washington
media outlets, along with a DVD with images of a trooper
“crawling around the bushes of the Capitol to record license
plate numbers of motorcycles into his tape machine,” the
letter reads. “My concern is anyone going to the Legislature
to have their views heard are being put on a list and it’s not
what we do in America,” said Fox. ABATE and the COC are
awaiting a written reply. “They want to know why it was be-
ing done and where this information was going,” said Fox.
AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENTS BAN BIKIE “GANGS”
Two of Australia’s biggest motorcycle “gangs” could soon
be banned and their members arrested for associating with sociation, the international organization that oversees and
one another under new anti-bikie laws passed in response
to escalating violence between rival clubs. The New South
Wales government has drawn up emergency legislation
that it claims will dismantle the biker gangs and bring the
violence to an end. Under the proposals, the police would
be able to apply to the courts to have a motorcycle group
declared a “criminal organization” and outlawed on the
basis of intelligence about its alleged activities. “The new
legislation was about declaring a particular organization a
criminal group, and I would say that this is a path that we
will now be able to go down,” NSW Assistant Police Com-
missioner Catherine Burn told reporters. The Rebels and
the Comanchero, clubs that were involved in a widely re-
ported fatal brawl at Sydney airport, are likely to be the first riding achievements but for his motorcycle rights advocacy
gangs so proscribed. Police could then arrest any member
wearing gang colors or associating with other known gang
members. In the meantime, gang legislation enacted in
South Australia last June to dismantle the clubs has had
the reverse effect - serving to unite rival clubs. Gypsy Jok-
ers, Hells Angels, Rebels, Finks and Descendents bike
club members have, for the first time, joined together in
protest against the Serious and Organised Crime Control
Act, described by the government as being the toughest
anti-gang law of its kind in the world. The alliance, known as
the FREE Australia Party, is only a few application process
steps away from forming a legitimate political party. The
party’s leader, Paul Kuhn - a committee member of the
Motorcycle Riders Association of SA and a Justice of the
Peace - said the group was formed because of deep con-
cern anyone associated with a member of a club would be
found guilty under the law. “The Government is now control-
ling and dictating relationships,” he said.
WEIRD NEWS: MUSICAL HELMETS A European recycle
program could turn music and movie disks into motorcycle
helmets. A recycling plan proposed by the Swiss supermar- Independence, 3rd US President
ket chain Migros aims to reduce the number of old CDs and
DVDs landing in the regular trash by collecting and using
them for an unrelated end product. The recycling program
aims to reduce the number of old CDs and DVDs destined
for the dumpster. Collection points will be available across
Switzerland, and they plan to shred the disks, using the
resulting granular remains to make new products such as
motorcycle helmets. According to a store spokesperson, the
discs contain the valuable petroleum product polycarbon-
ate, and far too many of them end up in the normal trash. If
the program is successful, an old Madonna CD or Brad Pitt
movie could be made into head gear.
MILLION MILE MAN Congratulations to Dave Zien, former
Wisconsin State Senator and longtime champion of bikers’
rights, for his unprecedented ride into history on April 4 as
the odometer on his 1991 FXRT Harley-Davidson turned
00000 for the tenth time! Zien became the first person to
ride the same Harley-Davidson motorcycle 1 million miles,
which may be the most mileage on any motorcycle ever!
The feat earned him a world record from the Iron Butt As-
governs safe, long-distance motorcycle riding challenges,
which was present at Hal’s Harley-Davidson in New Ber-
lin, WI to witness the achievement. During his time in the
saddle, Zien has collected numerous riding records, includ-
ing logging 1,616 miles in 24 hours and riding 3,032 miles
in 48 hours, and through 48 states in eight days. He also
has gone through three engines, a couple of transmissions
and too many tires to count. The Harley-Davidson Motor
Co. recognized Dave’s accomplishment by presenting him
with a 2009 FLHXR in exchange for his Million Mile Bike,
which is reportedly headed to the Sturgis Motorcycle Mu-
seum & Hall of Fame. The long-serving legislator is already
inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame for not only his
during his 18-year tenure in the state legislature. During
his years as a lawmaker, Zien was known for becoming
the state’s first motorcycle-riding legislator. Bikers’ rights
got Zien involved in politics, as he founded the Wisconsin
Better Bikers Association after returning from Vietnam and
helped repeal the state’s mandatory helmet law. He has
also served for many years on the Legislative Task Force
for the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM-LTF), and
has lobbied against adult helmet laws in numerous states
and on the federal level. In addition to his staunch support
of bikers’ rights issues, as a Marine combat veteran he
dedicated much of his public service to advocating for vet-
eran’s affairs. At last report, Dave was reluctant to leave his
trusty stead behind, but as the first digits roll across his new
odometer, a journey of a million miles begins anew.

Mathew 18:3 tells us unless we convert and become as
little children, we will not see the Kingdom of God. We are
to humble ourselves a children unto our Father. It gives
me great pleasure knowing my “Daddy” supplies all my
