.THE CROSS . .
When I survey the wondroiUI crotJtJ
On which the Prince of glory died,
My richetJt gain I count but lotJs,
And pour contempt on all my pride.
"Jesus Wept."
John 11:36.
Yes, Jesus wept!
What those holy tears roll down that-placid cheek,
And f all like gt!ntle shower!! from eyes that were so meek?
. Was it the love of that pure soul, expressed in silent grief;
For t wo sad hearts, with sorrow filled, who sought from Him relief?
Or was it He with human heart touched. wfth our human woe, .
When one we love is calle.(j,.away, their future lot tO know?
Was i t for these the Saviour wept, as by that tomb He stands,
- And vjews i he stricken hearts of those made sad bydeath' sdemands?
Ah, no! ' twas something deepet: still made J esus groan within; ..
He saw deep sorrow all a round, and knew its cause wa s sin;
He knew 'that man the image bore of God when he was made,
But lost that image, so divine, whe n from hi s God he Htrayed ;
He knew that Lazarus, a s he lay within tha t s il ent tomb,
Had paid the wages due to sin- death's sur!! and solemn doom;
He knew that for m had f elt the sti ng, like all t he human race,
And this i t was tha t made the t ears roll down the Saviour's face,
He knew ' twas sin that brought him down from Heaven' s eternal
throne, . .
_To dwell with men upon t he bear their guilt alone;..... .. ...
He knew that sin, with a ll its weight, would surely press Him down,
Unt il the sweat, like drops of blood, should fall upon t he g round;
He knew tha t s in would plait the crown of thorns that He must wear-
H_e kne w that sin would drive the nails, while He 'the pain mus t bear.
Yes, sin it was that d rew those t ears, which He did not rest rain-
'Twas needful He should die that man God' s image mig ht r egain.

The Cross and its Victim.
R. P.
Is the Cross-the representation of the sufferings of
our blessed Lord-getting to be too oommon a thing, and
passed by on the part of many Christians thoughtlessly,
and by others really "wagging their heads?" We do not
take the time to serious1y meditate Ol) the sufferings and
death of Jesus, as such an event calls fo_r. If we Jose
sight of the cross, there is nothing to produce sorrow for:
sin, .and there being no sorrow for sin there will be no .
:.repentance, the.refore . no forsaking or forgiveness of
sin. It is riot only a healthy exercise for the unsaved; but
it has in it that which solemnizes our hearts and brings
us in humility to the f eet of Him who hangs there. As
we the form, we see innocence f?.uffering
for guilt; we see lhe Worthy One taking the place of the
unworthy; we see the Divine taking the place of the
human, so that the human may become divine; we see the
Holy One dying that the sinful one may live;_ we see the
Son of God becoming the son of man and' dying, so that
thesons of men might live as the Sons of God. 0 God,
draw our hearts from fleeting things and fix them on Thy
bleeding Son, so that we may

ought to be pitted, putting . on a sad
or pensive or distressed air-what is
this but a kind of falling in love with
cqddlirig -it, making it one's
companion? A hundred times
better is it to remember that misery
is not the soul's true inheritance; and
to resolve not to be overcome;. then
to turn the attention to duties, to find
the blessings one has. Nothing is
lost and much i s gained by trying to
be brave and triumphant, to keep
one's misery of other's sight . and'
out of toq,__conspicuous a place in one's
own sight. The little vexations, even
the greater ones, are like some other
things; if kept in the dark they lose
their strength. It .has been said of
one whose life is long-drawn-out
_suffering: "He' his woes up
into fun." That's a masterful way
of treating one's woes-worth trying.
