''While We .Look Not."
Here is something worth more than millions to any
a look in right direction; a look that has
in it a miraculous power to change '"afflictions" into an
"eternal weight of glory." Strange that men won't see
it. This world's duration is byt a '.'moment" compared
to et ernity; and yet .while we tarry her e we shall be sub-
j ect to affiictions ;.butpraisetheLord, we can changethem

Robbing God.
''Will a man rob God?'' This is the startled expres..;.
sion of a surprised Creator. 1ihe thing is so horrible that
the infinite Source of all surprises stands in astonishment
at the fact. It would seem to be an interrogation, and yet
that implies that such a thing could not be. A man
may rob a man, his equal, and. even a king, his ruler; but
for a man to steal from his Maker, or withhold frQm.his
God that which is His; staggers the infinite to find expres-
sions strong enough to condemn it. Arid yet how- preva-
lent is this si n, anq what littl e conscience ther e is in
paying to God that which we hold, but \Yhich belongs to
Him wl.}o has made us stewards of it only . . Not only are
multitudes of Christians guilty from God
their "tithes and offerings" of. money, but greater than
this is the robbing Him of the' heart's devotion and the
time which oug ht to be given in joyous ser vice to rescue
men from sin.. Here is the ieason why the ''windows of
heaven" are not opened upon the church and the blessing

In Him-is all safety possessed.
A friend of the sinner is He,
A helper to infinite gain;
He's more than all others could be,
And no one doth seek Him in vain.
His love is surpassingly great,
Beyond what the angels had known;
,_. He left His ete;nal estate,
And came to the cross from the throne.
He paid all the debt that we owe;
Yet none can compute what it cost.
Obedient love we must show,

AMONG THORNS.
R. HURLBUT.
All spiritual truth is shado'wed
through a niortal body, as a scaffolding
"not made with hands."
The inner life is understood as in a par-
able to the one who can see. Jesus was
not understood by the sinners of his
time. A parable was an unknown
torigue, and He had to 'interpret to be-
lievers. They saw men as trees walk-
ing, so he says the \Vord is seed, to be
sown on stony ground and among
thorns everywhere. . .
The ''thorns'' are the cares, riches
. and pleasures of this life. The is
the heart life. This in the garden of
the-""' life of J esus had no nutriment for
the growth of vicious weeds. The
spirit, jn which sin is dead, will have
sunshine and moisture, will bring forth
fruits like the garden of Eden.
. The seed on the rocky ground will
sprout and. show life. The early joy
of the Lord in the beli-ever shows the
life; it has no root. so persecution or
tribulation withers it.
The seed sown where thorn seed
may spring up will be choked. '' The
fruits of the Spirit" are lJ).atured only
in the garden where evil seed can n,ot
grow.
A . soil be put to death by the
Fire Baptism of the Spirit. The tramp-
ing ground of Satan is under the curse,
and will grow only evil fruits. The
sanctified affections are. a ''garden of
spices.'' The spices of Satan's garden I
smell of the nature of his life. The soil
in his garden is immune to the fruitage
of the Holy Spirit. You cannot make

SIN-ITS ORIGIN.
E. D. HINCHMAN.
That sin originated in heaven is
plainly eyident (Rev. 12) inasmuch as
the devil and his angels! were already
cast out- andthe--old serpent was here
to tempt Eve to commit the first sin
recorded on earth. But how did sin
originate in a place where there was
no sin? For undoubtedly God did not
Cl.-eate sin. Fortunately, if we are open
to conviction, we nl?ed. not remain in
doubt as to this, for while Isa.
14:12-15 primarily refers to Babylon
and its king, yet its text cl early r eveals
it as a figure taken almost bodily from
a tradition of the Jews as, to the origi-
nation of the devil. "How art thou
fallen from heaven, 0 Lucifer, son of
the morning! how art thou: ,.cut down
to the ground which. didst weaken the
nations." "For thou hast said in thine
heart, I will ascend into heaven, I
exalt my throne above the stars of God;
I will sit also upon the mount of the
congregation, in ,tpe sides of the north.
I will ascend ab.ove the heights of the
clouds. I will be like the most High. ''
Literally, we know that the king of
Babylon _ had no such ambition as the
strength of .this figure would- imply,
hence it must have been at least a tra-
dition of occurrences, and .
the fact of its incorporation in the
text would . indicate some-
thing more than a: tradition. Ambi-
tion, good in its legitimate plaee,
doubtedly an attribute_ of God, getting
beyond his iii a free agency be-
. came the origin of sin.

HOLY SPlinT.
Shortly before the withdrawal of His
bodily presence from: among men our
Lord made gracious promises oi' ''an-
other Comforter" to succeed Himself,
"even the .Spirit of truth," "wbich is
the Holy Ghost." With the . utmost
precision and clearness also did He out-
line the work of this invisible but onll1i-
present and abiding Para.clctc, as fol-
lows:
"And when He is come He will con-
vict the ,\rorld in r espect of sin, lllHl of
righteousness, _ m1d of judgment : of sin,

glorify me; for He shall take of mine,
and shall d eclare it unto you." d e.
(John 16 :8-14) .

Such a life. \vonltl he like the
life of Christ than a scare-cr.ow is like
a man. To see a man doing some thing
which Christ would qo, without the
Spirit and glow and whi.ch He
had, would be as hideous as to see a
galvanized corpse doing some of the
things which a living man does. ' The
ordinary moral, courteous and even al-
truistic acts are not essentially Christly
acts; many do these from choice who
are not and . can Iitl't be considered as
living Christly lives, and \vonld be the
first to say that they are "!JOt.
This is not the Gospel. Christ's cal l

AN EXPLANATION.
Some of our people don't seem to under-
stand about the expiration of subscriptions
and the notices concerning same. Our plan
is to notifY subscribers of the date of the
expiration of their s ubscription. The postal'
regulations as well as good business require
that the subscription be renewed or the
Jla pe stopped. The notification Is in no
sense a dun, but simply to Inform you when
yonr subscritplon expires. Where it Is not
desirable or convenient to send in the money
at OI\,S:e. all that Is necessary is to ask !or
the continuance of the paper. We supply a
postcard for that purpose and it only re-
. quires one ceot to send It to us.
The rule Is to stop the paper when the
time expires, unless it is renewed. We do
not feel free to stop anyone's paper without
first notifying them of the expiration of the
time . . To do this we must send the notice
be fore the explr:ation. for if we walt until
the time bas expired, then the subscriber
would miss the pape rs during. the week or
weeks required to get an answer. . .
Some say, "You ought to know that . 1
want the Messenger." We think that e very-
body ought to want it, but they don' t, ani.l
every paper costs us something.
I! we furnish you the Messenger at a much
greater cost than the subscription price,
surely It is not unreasonable to ask you to
give timely. attention . to Its renewal.
Yours truly,
. C. J. KINNE.

4T THE TA.(JERNACLE ..
. 'fhere was a good of humble
devotion in the morning worship, and
after tlle opening exercises, Brother
Gay, the treasurer of our Mission
Board, gave a very helpf'ul and ii1spir-
. ing talk on missions. He told of the
increased interest along the line of mis-
sions throughout the entire church, the
opened fields which are inviting us, .
even urging us, to enter and take pos-
session and carry on the ' vork to which
God has called us. He urged upon us
the necessity of earnest prayer for the
workers in the foreign field as well as
.. i;n.Jbe home field, also to pray .for
more money to carry on tpis great work
of spreading Scriptural }ioliness. When
Brother Gay tftlks on missions)le makes
every body feel so glad that they have -
any int.erest at all in missions, and his
talk also makes every body feel so
mean that they have not had more in-
terest in this great subj ect and have
given so little to support the work.
Dr. Bresee preached the sermo.n of
the morning fl,'om Isa. 62:10, w hi eh was
indeed very lielpful ancl timely. This
is Dr. Bresee's favorite Book in the Old
Testament, and after outlining. briefly
the two parts of this great Book, he
took us through the gates into the c ity
which he said was the church. The way
must be prepared .by gathering ont t he
stOJH'S after the casting Up of a high-
way. H e said, "Stones are good when
put in the roadbed, but become great
hindrances .when in the, way or on the
rails.'' These stones are truths put in
the wrong place and thus may becomf'
great obstacles in the vv'ay of the on-
coming train of salvation. The congre-
gation became somewhat enthused as he
brought out the Stars and Stripes to il-
lustrate the "lifting up of a standard
for the people." He brought the ser -
vice to a close by urging holiness as our
standard for this day m1cl" age.
The afternOOJil service was a precious
hour before the t hrone in earnest
prayer ns the saints prayed through to
vi ctory. The t ender meltit1g power of
the Spirit came upon the peoplt:. and
the testimonies w:ere marked spe-
ri al inspiration. The most hopefnl sign
of the Divine presence among the peo-
,ple was the manifestation of heart
rlens for the unsaved find unsanctifie(L
These heart burdens indi c> a];e coming
victofy in greater tides of salvation .
These afternoon meetings are of great
importance in t he work of the church .
One woman at the close came to t he
altar seeking Gorl in earnest prayer.
The evening service was in char ge of
t he assistant .J. W. Goodwin,
who brought the messfl ge from TJuke
12:49, taking lls his subject the "Gos-
pel as a Fire. " H e earnestly exhorted
the people to get more fire from heaven ..
and spoke of the various of
fire; it was a fact r ather than philo-
sophy, and urged t h e people t o he fillerl
with God, who was a co.nsuming fire.
