Welcome
June 16 2013
Welcome to Unley Park Baptist today. It is great to have you with us. If you are new to Unley Park, we appreciate that it can be daunting to walk into a new church, so as much as we can, we want to help you feel at home here. In the pew in front of you please find a black folder that contains a white care card for you to complete. There is also a "Welcome Pack" available for you that, among other things, has a special Care Card for you to record your visit and for us to follow up any requests you make. All Care Cards should be "posted" as you leave the church, in the locked box on the table by the "Baptistry Door".

Just a Minute
Rob Waldron writes Does God speak today? It's a question that draws differing responses depending on who you ask, what church denomination that person may come from or the personal experience he or she may have had. It is also a question which may highlight prejudices we have in how we interpret or apply God's Word today. I am currently reading a book which encourages Christians to actively listen for the voice of God with an expectancy that God still speaks as he did in Old Testament times, as he did during the time Jesus was on earth and also following on from the gift of the Holy Spirit. In those times God spoke through prophets, through dreams and visions, through intuition, through an audible voice, through angels and through the written word. What I have found interesting is that I can find no suggestion in scripture that God has changed the way he interacts with us and how he actively communicates with us. I think the greater problem lies with us and how open we are to listening. Do we even entertain the thought that God might speak with us? The question does, however, open up a Pandora's box because it allows the highly emotive, the mentally unstable, the person seeking prominence or the gullible to declare with some sort of authority that God has spoken directly to them and others should pay heed to what they are saying. But that sort of tension has always existed and we are encouraged continually to put things to the test and use wisdom and sound common sense in determining whether God is speaking through a particular person or not. We run the risk of making God cold and distant if we assert that he doesn't speak today. Our prayers can become simply dictation rather than interaction and communion with our creator. God has come into a relationship with us and he is known to us as our father and in such a close relationship communication is central. A suggestion for this week during your times of prayer, bible study and meditation is to be open to the thought that God may speak with you. Of course, if there is no prayer, bible study or meditation then we may be in no position to even be listening - but that's another (and probably more important) issue. Remember that the Bible is not just about what God has said but what he is saying.
Members Meeting
There will be a Members Meeting after the service on June 23. Its an opportunity for us to share together all that God is doing at UPBC. We will also present the budget for the coming year. Look forward to seeing you there.
