Ammonia is one of the worlds most produced chemicals. Due to its high nitrogen content, ammonia is mainly used as a fertilizer or as the base material for the production of other fertilizers, such as urea or fertilizer mixes. Additionally, ammonia is used in industrial applications, for example refrigeration engineering, cleaning, textile finishing, and the manufacturing of various other chemical products. Increased demand for industry and agriculture The market research institute Ceresana is forecasting the global ammonia market to generate revenues of approx. US$102 billion in 2019. Continuous growth of population in developing and emerging countries is likely to cause demand for foodstuffs to increase even further. As the amount of arable land declines, ammonia-based nitrogen fertilizers will continue to gain importance in the future. The industry as well is likely to increase ammonia demand once the effects of the global economic crisis have worn off.

Strong growth impulses from populous countries Most important sales market for ammonia is Asia-Pacific that consumes about half of global demand. Populous emerging countries such as China and India in particular are likely to continue to increase demand for ammonia at dynamic rates. Accordingly, consumption focus will continue to shift towards Asia-Pacific. However, the Middle East is also expected to generate above-average growth rates due to the construction of facilities in downstream industries, e.g. urea production. Cost-effective production in the USA Production locations are undergoing a geographical shift towards Asia-Pacific and the Middle East. Global ammonia capacity of currently about 198 million tonnes is likely to increase by about 35 million tonnes until 2019. About two thirds of these additional capacities are to be created in these two regions. The Middle East in particular is able to profit from substantial
Page 2

natural gas resources that allow for ammonia production at comparatively low costs. Exception to this tendency of geographical re-orientation of production is the USA that is likely to increase both production volume and production capacities. Utilizing the Fracking-technology, this country is able to exploit its shale gas resources at economic prices and thus becomes a competitive location for ammonia production. Urea as growth engine This worldwide most comprehensive report depicts the development in both the agricultural as well as the industrial sectors. Plants need nitrogen as primary nutrient and ammonia, often in processed form, is an efficient fertilizer. Thus, the agricultural sector consumes a by far larger share of ammonia as does the industry. Urea made from ammonia is processed in both application areas. The industry utilizes ammonia for the manufacturing of urea-formaldehyde resins, melamine, and the urea solution AdBlue that is designed to reduce nitrogen consumption. www.ceresana.com/en

At average growth rates of about X% p.a., global ammonia production rose from X million tonnes in 2003 to X million tonnes eight years later. Major base material for the production of ammonia is natural gas. Other facilities use coal, especially those located in China, or crude oil and its derivatives. In 2011, AsiaPacific produced about X million tonnes of ammonia, accouting for X% of total global production; thus, this region was the major producer that year (Graph). Eastern Europe produced X million tonnes and ranked second, followed by the Middle East that reached a production volume of X million tonnes and North America that recorded an output of approx. X million tonnes. Western Europe produced slightly more (X million tonnes) than South America (X million tonnes), while Africa reached the smallest production volume of X million tonnes.

We forecast global production volume of ammonia to increase to about X million tonnes by 2019. Compared to 2011, this constitutes an average annual growth rate of X%. Asia-Pacific's share of global ammonia output is likely to amount to slightly more than half of global production in 2019; market shares of all other regions, except Africa, are expected to fall. Africa and Asia-Pacific are likely to generate

North America Demand and Revenues

In 2003, North America processed X million tonnes of ammonia (Graph). In 2007, consumption reached a temporary maximum of about X million tonnes; until 2009 demand fell, but has begun to recover slightly. Thus, average growth rate for the period 2003 to 2011 was X% per year; demand rose to X million tonnes. That year, North America accounted for X% of global consumption and was second major consumer after Asia-Pacific.

Brazil Production and Capacities

Production About X million tonnes of ammonia were manufactured in Brazil in 2003. Until 2011, production volume rose at an AAGR of X% to about X million tonnes. Due to planned expansions of production capacities until X, we expect a more dynamic increase of production volume of, on average, X% per year. In 2019, about X million tonnes are likely to be produced. Given the scheduled expansions in the production of urea, ammonia production is likely to profit as well. While production volume of urea is expected to increase by X% between 2011 and 2019, the amount of ammonia required is likely to be provided by both own production and well as through imports.

Capacities In 2011, Brazilian production capacity of ammonia amounted to more than X million tonnes (Table). Due to the completion of a complex with an estimated capacity of X tonnes in X, total capacity in Brazil will continue to increase (Table).
