Hook US I or 5.5 mm Tapestry/Yarn Needle Split Stitch Markers if you like to mark corners
Instructions:
Starting with Color A, either ch 5 and join w/sl st to form circle, or use adjustable loop. RND 1: Ch 4 (as dc and ch 1), dc in loop or circle (V-st made), (ch 2, V-st) x 3, ch 2, finish with Invisible Join or sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-3. Fasten off Color A. Tighten adjustable loop if required. (4 V-st, 4 ch-2 sp)
RND 2: Join Color B as Beg V-st (see stitches) in any corner ch-2 sp, [dtr2dwn into beg circle, corner as (V-st, ch 2, V-st) in ch-2 sp] x 3, dtr2dwn, V-st in corner ch-2 sp, ch 2, finish with Invisible Join or sl st in 2nd ch of beg ch-3. Fasten off Color B. (8 V-st, 4 dtr2dwn, 4 ch-2 sp)
RND 3: Join Color C as Beg V-st in any corner ch-2 sp, [dtr2dwn around RND 1, dc in sp before next dtr2dwn, ch 1, dc in sp after same dtr2dwn; dtr2dwn around RND 1, corner as (V-st, ch 2, V-st) in ch-2 sp] x 4, omitting last V-st on 4th rep, finish with Invisible Join or sl st in 2nd ch of beg ch-3. RND 4: (NOTE CAREFULLY: Starting in this RND, the middle dtr2dwns on the sides are worked into the top of the dtr2dwn 2 rounds belowso these will be worked in the ones from RND 2 ). Join Color D as Beg V-st in any corner ch-2 sp, [dtr2dwn around RND 2, dc in sp before next dtr2dwn, ch 1, dc in sp after same dtr2dwn; dtr2dwn in next RND 2 dtr2dwn, dc in sp before next dtr2dwn, ch 1, dc in sp after same dtr2dwn; dtr2dwn around RND 2, corner as (V-st, ch 2, V-st) in ch-2 sp] x 4, omitting last V-st on 4th rep, finish with Invisible Join or sl st in 2nd ch of beg ch-3. Fasten off Color D. (8 V-st, 12 dtr2dwn, 16 dc, 8 ch1 sp, 4 ch-2 sp)
RND 5: Join Color E as in RND 4, and follow the same sequence, with additional dc and dtr2dwn as required. All dtr2dwn are worked behind ch-1 sp of every V-st (working 2 RNDS below), or behind the ch-1 sp between 2 dc (in the dtr2dwn of 2 RNDS below). The corners are worked the same. The Finish is worked the same. (8 V-st, 16 dtr2dwn, 24 dc, 12 ch-1 sp, 4 ch-2 sp)
RND 6: Repeat RND 5 sequencing, working in Color F or as desired and increasing numbers of stitches as needed, working dtr2dwn into RND 4. (8 V-st, 20 dtr2dwn, 32 dc, 16 ch-1 sp, 4 ch-2 sp)
RND 7: Repeat RND 5 sequencing, working in Color A or as desired.working dtr2dwn into RND 5. (8 Vst, 24 dtr2dwn, 40 dc, 20 ch-1 sp, 4 ch-2 sp)
RND 8: Join Color D (or as desired) as Beg V-st in any corner ch-2 sp, [dtr2dwn around RND 6, (dc in sp before next dtr2dwn, dc in top of dtr2dwn, dc in sp after same dtr2dwn; dtr2dwn in next RND 6 dtr2dwn) x 5, dc in sp before next dtr2dwn, dc in dtr2dwn, dc in sp after same dtr2dwn; dtr2dwn around RND6, work corner as (V-st, ch1, V-st)] x 4, omitting last V-st on 4th rep, finish with Invisible Join or sl st in 2nd ch of beg ch-3. Fasten off Color D. (8 V-st, 28 dtr2dwn, 72 dc, 4 ch-1 sp)
RND 8: (alternate instruction for blocks that are too big--could also be worked as a sc round) Join Color D w/ a sc in any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1 (sc and ch-1 act as hdc), (hdc, ch 1, 2 hdc) in same sp, [hdc in each st of V-st, including ch-1 sp (3 hdc made in V-st), hdc in next 16 st, skipping ch-1 sps, hdc in each st of last V-st, corner as (2 hdc, ch 1, 2 hdc) in ch-2 sp] x 4, omitting corner on 4th rep, finish with Invisible Join, or sl st in beg ch-1. Fasten off. (104 hdc, 4 ch-1 sp).
Note: If you weave your ends in carefully, this block is fully reversible and looks completely different on each side. Surprise!
