Christ bestowed unity on his Church from the beginning. This unity, we believe, subsists in the Catholic Church as something she can never lose, and we hope that it will continue to increase until the end of time. Christ always gives his Church the gift of unity, but the Church must always pray and work to maintain, reinforce, and perfect the unity that Christ wills for her. This is why Jesus himself prayed at the hour of his Passion, and does not cease praying to his Father, for the unity of his disciples: That they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be one in us,... so that the world may know that you have sent me. Wanted: Positive Male Role Models

Fathers Day reminds us that fathers are a tremendous source of love, strength and protection for a child. Notwithstanding the faithful and heroic efforts of single moms bringing up children in todays society, children still need to be around Christian men who are positive role models; men who are actively involved in their life of faith, possess spiritual passion, and are faithful fathers and husbands. Undoubtedly, parishes need more men to be involved in the spiritual development of young people. Males bring a unique contribution that cannot be successfully substituted by females. Only men can serve as male role models and communicate the model of God as a loving father to children. In todays society, for a number of reasons, many children grow up in single-parent homes, nurtured by their mothers. The parish or school may be the only place where these children have an opportunity to interact with men who model the loving, caring, and nurturing values of Christian manhood. Children can benefit from having a positive and responsible male role model in their lives. It is said of young males that they are naturally more attentive to men when being taught good manners and respect for others. Men are generally better able to get young males unhooked from video games and involved in athletic competitions and outdoor activities so they can experience a wider world, and do things that are physically demanding; thus realizing a host of virtues. Adolescent males appear to develop emotional literacy, social skills, and Christian values more readily from men. And the presence of a Christian man helps reduce the possibility of a young male becoming disaffected, socially isolated, and more prone to embracing at-risk behaviors. Of course, much of the above can be said for the importance of men in the lives of young women as well. But men can offer a unique Christian witness to young women in a culture that is so focused on young females as sex objects. It is important for girls to experience positive male role models; Christian men who see young women as children of God and are interested in what they say, think and feel as they grow in their spiritual lives. Young people need both male and female role models. But adult males are fewer to be found. Let Fathers Day remind us to find ways to connect with fathers and invite other positive male role models into the faith formation of our young people. Lets encourage men to get more involved in the parish as mentors, tutors, catechists and other ministries. Lets help young people see first-hand how Christian men follow Jesus Christ and live as his disciples in todays world.

Eucharistic Holy Hour for Life, Marriage and Religious Freedom

Join us for a Eucharistic Holy Hour for Life, Marriage and Religious Freedom the last Sunday of every month throughout the Year Of Faith at 3 pm at St. Petronille Church in Glen Ellyn. There will be adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, readings and a short homily, and benediction. All are welcome to join our voices and hearts in prayer before the Eucharistic Lord. Making Sense Out of Suffering

We all experience suffering at some time in our lives. Our tribulations range from small disappointments to serious tragedies. Listen as scripture scholar and lay theologian, Dr. Scott Hahn, makes sense out of suffering by drawing from the wisdom and insight of God's Word. He helps us find the meaning of our suffering by showing us how to unite it to the suffering of Christ on the Cross.

Were You Married in the Catholic Church?

Catholic Church law ordinarily requires baptized Roman Catholics to marry before a priest or deacon. Unless they requested and received a dispensation from canonical form, Catholics who exchange marriage vows in the presence of only ministers from other religious traditions or authorized civic officials are not considered validly married in the eyes of the Catholic Church. Couples may seek to have their union officially recognized by the Church. In technical Church terms, this is known as convalidation of a marriage. In 1981, Pope John Paul II issued an apostolic exhortation called On the Family. Among many things, this document outlines a procedure for pastors and pastoral leaders to assist families about convalidation ceremonies. The first step for the couple is to meet with the Pastor, Deacon or Pastoral Associate for a personal meeting. Each situation is unique and requires special attention. Diocesan Wedding Anniversary Mass

The Diocese of Joliet will hold its Thirty-fifth annual Wedding Anniversary Mass on Sunday, September 8, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. Raymond in Joliet. If you are celebrating either your 25th or 50th anniversary this year, please contact the rectory so that we may submit your name to the Diocese for a formal invitation. Those celebrating over 50 year anniversaries do not receive a formal invitation, but will be able to register to attend at a later date.

Summer Church Attire

As we approach summer, I see already a change in dressing for Mass. * Please no shorts, short slacks or tank tops, for men and women, in the congregation. * All ministers of the Altar, adults and children, only dress shoes, when you serve. * It is always nice to see our ushers wearing a tie and dress coat for their ministry. * I personally will be more mindful of myself in wearing a suit coat when I come to church. Why a Fortnight in 2013? The second annual Fortnight for Freedom will take place from June 21 to July 4, and will consist of national and local efforts to educate Americans on challenges to religious liberty both at home and abroad. Each of us plays several, perhaps even many, roles. So Ill just list some of mine and you can think of yours. Mine include husband, father, deacon, sibling, grandfather, son (although both parents are deceased), father-in-law, uncle, friend, acquaintance. As we celebrate Fathers Day Ill just focus on husband, father and deacon. Were reminded throughout diaconate preparation and afterwards, as deacon, that our priorities should be family, job, diaconate. Fathers day is only a reality for me in relationship to my wife, the mother of my children, the woman with whom I become one flesh. During our courting days we talked about how many children we would like. I spoke of 6, she 12. Camille was influenced by Cheaper by the Dozen but did not pay attention to their maid and butler. God gifted us with children quickly. After the first 4, we decided to learn about and to use Natural Family Planning. After the 7th child, we reevaluated many things and decided that would be all unless God saw things otherwise. In The Catechism of the Catholic Church, we read: 2367(CCC): Called to give life, spouses share in the creative power and fatherhood of God. Married couples should regard it as their proper mission to transmit human life and to educate their children; they should realize that they are thereby cooperating with the love of God the Creator and are, in a certain sense, its interpreters. They will fulfill this duty with a sense of human and Christian responsibility. I was aware of the Permanent Diaconate, its reinstitution at Vatican II, even before it was instituted in the US. I saw some friends going through the preparation and being ordained. When a pastor asked me to talk about it, I had taken an early retirement and was teaching. I would be finishing a Masters Degree and the youngest child would be starting High School about the time my studies would begin. My mother-in-law was living with us and was fairly healthy. There is never a right time, but some times seem better than others. Hopefully, none us feels fully prepared for the many calls God places upon us. But in Faith and Hope I embraced the call to be a Deacon, to be ordained at age 60 to serve as a person of Word, Sacrament and Service to Gods people, particularly here at Christ the King Parish and in the Diocese of Joliet. At a Diaconate Community meeting today it was stated that the average age of deacons in the Joliet Diocese is 65. We need to continually pray for and ask other men to discern a call to the Diaconate, as we also must to call others to the priesthood or religious life. Each requires a long period of preparation. Interviews start soon for the next Diaconate class in the Diocese, those to be Ordained in 2018. The first information night for this class will be here at Christ the King August 22, Thursday evening, at 7:30PM. Please pray that men from our parish will discern Gods call in this regard and seek more information. Father Peter and any of the Deacons are available to pray with you and to answer any questions you may have. Let us Pray That servants for the vineyard may respond to the Masters call, we pray. That we may pray daily for our children and that they may respond to the Lords call for them to discern what he is calling them to do in their lives. That parents, and children of all ages, may always respond to one another in Love. That all of our households may be seen as Domestic Churches. Happy Fathers Day, Deacon Frank

Ministers of Care are Needed

Ministers of Care are needed to bring Holy Communion to the Catholic patients at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital. The census of the hospital includes a high percentage of Catholics every day of the week. Good Samaritan Hospital is very welcoming and appreciative of our Catholic Eucharistic Ministry. This work of mercy serves others as well as enriching the volunteer in a deep spiritual way. This is a ministry in which one can serve often or occasionally, as substitutes are also needed. Ministers of Care are given on-site ministry training by Chaplain Laura Williams and volunteer orientation specifically for Good Samaritan by the volunteer services office. Free flu shots and TB tests are provided by the hospital as well as other perks. Good Samaritan works together with the Diocese of Joliet to provide the best training for Ministers of Care. Sr. Jane Schlosser at the Carmelite Retreat in Darien offers the initial training periodically throughout the year. Your fee for this training will be reimbursed by Good Samaritan Hospital. A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT
In todays Gospel Jesus tells his disciples that if they wish to follow him they must deny themselves and take up his cross daily. In Jesus time the cross was not something nice or cool that one could hang on the wall or around ones neck. It was an instrument of torture and execution. His point: We are to lay down our lives and let him take control. Good stewards hand over their lives to Jesus no matter the cost. They realize that all they take with them into the next life is their relationship with Christ Jesus. What are we pursuing?

REGISTRATION: We welcome you as a family member of Christ the King Parish. It is our hope and prayer that you feel at home with us at weekend masses, prayer times, and parish activities. Registration is on the first Sunday of the month in the narthex, after each Mass or come to the parish office during business hours. SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM:
Will be on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the Month. Arrangements for baptisms are made by attending a preparation meeting. Parish registration is a pre-requisite for attending the meeting. 630.629.1717 x0

SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY: Please allow eight months of preparation time. Date arrangements are made after the initial meeting with pastor or a representative before any other commitments are made.
