The Brief: REPETITIOUS AND UNIQUE

Quotes by sculptors Sculpture is a three-dimensional object with a message. Bob Brendle Sculpture occupies the same space as your body. Anish Kapoor Happiness is the longing for repetition. Milan Kundera It is a great privilege to be able to work with, and I suppose work off, my feelings through sculpture. Louise Bourgeois At some point weve got to stop asking ourselves what is the meaning of everything, maybe its not so very important what it means. Its probably more important what the sense of it is [...] they are two very basic and different things. Tony Cragg There are universal shapes to which everyone is subconsciously conditioned and to which they can respond if their conscious control does not shut them off. Henry Moore What I expect from any work of art is that it surprises me, that it violates my customary valuations of things and offers me other, unexpected ones. Jean Dubuffet. INTRODUCTION: Consider the title of this brief Repetition and uniqueness exist simultaneously in the world around us. Take time to consider how physical forms and organisms, images, colours, sounds, even concepts can contain both the repetitious and the unique. For example, in the day to day environment: cans of beans on a supermarket shelf, plastic spoons in the college caf, a line of people waiting for the Post Office to open, traffic, stackable chairs, books on a bookshelf, mannequins in a shop window. In the natural world: cells, DNA, twins, a foetus, regular occurrences, crowds, physical movement and performance, the structure of a fern, grains of sand on a beach, footprint in the sand, fossils, fish in a shoal, flocking birds are all examples of apparent repetition but built into them is an inherent and obvious uniqueness. Consider also the non-physical world: the ticking of a clock, sounds from musical instruments, digital sound and the human voice, memories and the retrieval of them, habits, dj vu, emotions. WHAT will you be creating in this project? Working with the theme of the brief you are required to produce a range of sculptural and mixed-media work. Your sculptures could be figurative or abstract and your final work could be exhibited in the studio, outside or in a specially prepared space. The final sculpture could be permanent, temporary or part of a performance or installation. Throughout this assignment you will be encouraged to explore different ways of working and thinking, we would like you to produce a large and varied body of

exploratory work that progresses and describes interpretation of the theme Repetitious and Unique.

your

particular

HOW will you be creating work in this project? You will be expected to experiment with the following materials: plasticine, plaster, clay, wood, metal, fabric, plastic, stone, wax, polystyrene, card, paper, willow and found objects ; and the following techniques: carving, modelling, casting, binding, gluing, bolting, folding and forming. Activity A: INDIVIDUALLY INVESTIGATE THE BRIEFS THEME AND BEGIN TO EXPERIMENT Investigate and research the theme of Repetitious and Unique, develop your own responses, ideas and concepts. Start by producing a series of brainstorms and word lists. Collect primary and secondary visual and artist research to draw from in developing ideas. Save and present interesting and relevant ideas and philosophies as quotes. Consider other art forms which have dealt with the briefs theme. Create drawings, take rubbings of surfaces, make castings and models etc from what you find. It is important that you create a very broad range of practical test pieces and work on paper at this early stage.
Unit 3: P1, P2, P3 Unit 2: P1, P2, P3 Unit 1: P1, P2, M1

Activity B: EXPERIMENT AND DEVELOP WORKING PRACTICES Attend the workshops on moulding, sculpting and modelling techniques and make detailed notes. Using these and other techniques experiment with diverse 3D materials and develop a body of practical work. Consistently draw from the sculptures and research imagery to develop aesthetics and ideas. Take photos of work in progress and evaluate the effectiveness of your use of materials and development of ideas. Visual and artist research must be collected and its use illustrated and described in ongoing progress-evaluations. You must keep a techniques file with notes from the workshops, handouts. Youtube videos and useful websites etc should be presented on your Posterous account.
Unit 1: P1, P2, P5, M1, M2 P4: P1, P2, P3, P4 Unit 2: P1, P2, P3 M1, M2 Unit 75: P1, P2, P4, M1, M2, M4 D1, D2, D4 Unit 3: P1, P2, P3 M1, M2, Unit 82, P1, P2, P3, M1

Activity C: PRODUCE A FINAL SCULPTURE AND ARTIST STATEMENT Select one of your initial experimental ideas to develop into a final sculpture. Produce a series of drawing studies and 3D tests from visual and artist research to inform your final sculpture.

Create an ambitious final piece then present it in a considered and creative way. Evaluate and describe how your ideas, plus your choice and use of materials and techniques have developed and how your work communicates them This planning and development process for your final piece must include its own artist and visual research, material experiments and illustrated evaluations. Find, collect, analyse and present artist statements in your sketchbook during the project. Write an artist statement explaining the key aims and references of your final sculpture.
Unit 2: P1, P2, P3 M1, M2, D1 Unit 5: P1, P3, P4, M2 Unit 1: All Unit 4: All Unit 75: All Unit 3: P1, P2, P3 M1, M2, D1, D2 Unit 82 P1, P2, P3, P4, M1, M2, D1

Activity D: PRODUCE A FINAL EVALUATION OF YOUR PROJECT During the last week of the project write an overall evaluation of your progress. We suggest this be about 500 words. Discuss your work chronologically and use the evaluation help sheet.
Unit 1: P4 Unit 2: P3, M2, D Unit 3: P1,P4, M2, D2 Unit 4: P3

-Research ActivitiesActivity D: PRODUCE A SCULPTURE PRESENTATION FOLDER Note: This sculpture project is an ideal opportunity to research and experiment with how work can be presented. A sculpture is a 3D object and so naturally inhabits a space or location. How and where you present your work can completely alter how viewers interpret its aesthetic and meaning. Read the Anish Kapoor quote at the start of the brief. Part 1 of your Presentation-of-Sculpture Folder should contain evidence of primary and secondary research into how sculptors present their work and invite the viewer encounter, see, feel it. Your folder could be a physical sketchbook or a Posterous page and needs to include exhibition log books and your own independent research with numerous images. Part 2 of your Presentation-of-Sculpture Folder is where you evidence how you have presented all your own Sculptural work: Explain and illustrate how you have been influenced by what you have seen with written evaluation and images. Record and evaluate creatively in the folder your own inventive locations and styles for presenting work.
Unit 84: (All) Unit 5: P1, P3, P4, M2 Unit 4: P1, P3, M1

Activity E: SKETCHBOOK + POSTEROUS BASED RESEARCH ON THE WORK OF SCULPTORS

Research a broad range of sculptors in your sketchbook and/or on Posterous throughout this project; begin with the list at the end of this assignment. Look at both historical and contemporary sculptors and movements. Your chosen sculptors and sculptures should be ones you enjoy viewing and whose work makes you want to create. Some should be relevant to your own ideas but the most important thing is that you expose yourself to as much artwork as possible. Ensure that you are using the research and evaluation help sheets; these are on Moodle should you need another copy. Go to major sculpture exhibitions in London so that you can be influenced by and reference the work in your own creative development. Use Time Out and Art Rabbit to find suitable shows and then evaluate on Posterous how useful the websites are. See part 1 above.
Unit 3: P2, M1, D1 Unit 1: P3, M1 Unit 5: P4, M2 P1, P3, Unit 4: P1, P3, M1

Activity F: FORMAL RESEARCH (ESSAY + POWERPOINT) The essay will be preceded by 2 lectures on the essay subject. You must attend the lectures and take notes (lecture 1: 350AD 1915, lecture 2: 1918 present day.) Type an essay of between 800 and 1500 words discussing and comparing ways in which allegory (story telling) has been used in sculptural works between the dates above. You will need to conduct your own, additional, research into the essay to secure high grades. When you use quotes put them in quotation marks with a number referencing your numbered bibliography list, i.e. Quote.. (4) A Group Power Point Presentation should be produced In groups of 35. Research and select 1 historical sculptor and 1 contemporary sculptor Divide the research checklist activities between your group for each chosen artist Describe and compare some key works, methods and the sculptors cultural contexts. Describe and evaluate their sculptures using descriptive terms and formal elements. Select and present a range of images throughout your Power Point to illustrate your points. Evidence what you have personally contributed on a Posterous page .
Unit 3: M1, D1 P2, P3, Unit 5: (All) Unit 1, P3, M1 Unit 82: P1 Unit 4: P1, P3, M1
