AAA: Think You Know All About Distracted Driving? Think Again
New research reveals that voice-activated in-car technologies dangerously undermine driver attention Hands-free technologies might make it easier for motorists to text, talk on the phone, or even use Facebook while they drive, but new findings from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety show dangerous mental distractions exist even when drivers keep their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road. The research found that as mental workload and distractions increase reaction time slows, brain function is compromised, drivers scan the road less and miss visual cues, potentially resulting in drivers not seeing items right in front of them including stop signs and pedestrians. This is the most comprehensive study of its kind to look at the mental distraction of drivers and arms AAA with evidence to appeal to the public to not use these voiceto-text features while their vehicle is in motion. With a predicted five-fold increase in infotainment systems in new vehicles by 2018, AAA is calling for action as result of this landmark research. There is a looming public safety crisis ahead with the future proliferation of these in-vehicle technologies, said AAA President and CEO Robert L. Darbelnet. Its time to consider limiting new and potentially dangerous mental distractions built into cars, particularly with the common public misperception that hands-free means risk-free. Cognitive distraction expert Dr. David Strayer and his research team at the University of Utah measured brainwaves, eye movement and other metrics to assess what happens to drivers mental workload when they attempt to do multiple things at once, building upon decades of research in the aerospace and automotive industries. The research included: Cameras mounted inside an instrumented car to track eye and head movement of drivers. A Detection-Response-Task device known as the DRT was used to record driver reaction time in response to triggers of red and green lights added to their field of vision. A special electroencephalographic (EEG)-configured skull cap was used to chart participants brain activity so that researchers could determine mental workload. Using established research protocols borrowed from aviation psychology and a

Dear Dr. Winter, I have had a gold crown for 30 years in my back bottom molar and it now has a little worn away spot on the top of it. The tooth underneath does not have a root canal, should I get it repaired (gold foiling) or do I have to get a whole new crown. The dentist seems to think he can foil it, what should I do? Dear Mary Ann, the fact that your dentist does gold foils tells me he is an older dentist that has the skill to place a nice small gold restoration. Most dentists today do not know how to do direct gold fillings anymore as it is no longer taught in dental school. If the price is reasonable you could do a repair but if they feel the crown needs to be replaced then you may want to consider that. Chances are a meticulous dentist that offers gold fillings would not suggest that restoration unless the rest of the crown margins, contours and occlusion were good. Go for the gold! It's better than plugging it with Silver. Dear Dr. Winter, I understand that deep cleanings can close or reduce the gaps in one's gum line. Is the gap improved because the gums shrink up (thereby exposing more tooth)? Or is the gap improved because the gum now adheres to the cleaned tooth surface? Dear Sue, Deep cleanings allow for bacterial removal, biofilm removal, soft tissue healing and shrinkage of inflamed tissues. These tissues with their attachment apparatus will attach to the healthy root surface where the surface of the root is clean, healthy and free of restorations. It will not prevent gaps of any type. Tissues that are puffy may shrink to acceptable levels but in general tissues that have receded due to bone loss and tissue migration will not come all the way back if there has been underlying bony destruction. Dear Dr. Winter, I have top and bottom dentures that are held in with implants. I have 2 implants for the top and 2 implants for the bottoms. The top denture has cracked 3 times and has been repaired at a cost of almost $300 each time. The dentist blames my bite for them cracking and says the only way to correct the problem is to put more implants in on top and a new denture to correct the bite. What do you

think? I cant afford these repairs! Dear Dave, your dentist is correct. Two implants is never advised to support an upper denture. You need additional implants for support and probably a metal reinforced implant overdenture. Upper dentures cover the entire palate and whenever you chew it creates spreading forces that will lead to cracks down the middle of the denture. Having two implants leads to rocking. If you draw a line across the two implants its like a teeter tater where the denture can rock forward and backward over this pivot line. You need more implant support, possible grafting to have enough bone and most likely a new denture. Listening and responding to in-vehicle, voice-activated email features increased mental workload and distraction levels of the drivers to a 3 rating or one of extensive risk. These findings reinforce previous research that hands-free is not risk-free, said AAA Foundation President and CEO Peter Kissinger. Increased mental workload and cognitive distractions can lead to a type of tunnel vision or inattention blindness where motorists dont see potential hazards right in front of them. The research results support AAAs efforts to educate the public that distractions come in many forms, said Amy Stracke, managing director, traffic safety advocacy, AAAThe Auto Club Group. Visual and manual distractions have been identified and studied previously, but mental distractions are just as dangerous. Based on this research, AAA urges the automotive and electronics industries to join us in exploring: Limiting use of voice-activated technology to core driving-related activities such as climate control, windshield wipers and cruise control, and to ensure these applications do not lead to increased safety risk due to mental distraction while the car is moving. Disabling certain functionalities of voice-to-text technologies such as using social media or interacting with e-mail and text messages so that they are inoperable while the vehicle is in motion. Educating vehicle owners and mobile device users about the responsible use and safety risks for in-vehicle technologies. AAA also is using the findings to promote dialogue with policy makers, safety advocates and industry to ensure that these emerging in-vehicle technologies wont lead to unintentional compromises in public safety. As part of this effort, AAA has already met with safety advocates and provided copies of the report to CEOs of all major U.S. automakers. This study constitutes the most in-depth analysis to date of mental distractions behind the wheel. AAA is hopeful that it will serve as a stepping stone toward working in collaboration with automakers to promote our shared goal of improving safety for all drivers, said Darbelnet. Specifically, these increasingly common voice-driven, invehicle technologies should be limited to use for just core driving tasks unless the activity results in no significant driver distraction. This position is a full time position. Our Lead Caregivers play a critical role in assisting our residents. Their activities include (but are not limited to): Assisting with ADLs, medication administration, light housekeeping and laundry. Perform delegated tasks as instructed by the Executive Director, Nurse or Assistant Executive Director. Assists with paperwork, record keeping and staff organization. Perform acceptable standard healthcare practices. Assist with housekeeping duties in resident or common areas (vacuuming, dusting, sweeping, cleaning, etc.) as directed. Observe and report resident's condition and safety hazards to RN Administrator or Executive Director in a timely manner. Document observations and activities in an accurate, complete and timely manner. Notify Executive Director or RN Administrator of resident or staff complaints or issues; provide communication to the family or resident as directed. Protect residents' health information according to HIPPA policies and procedures and federal and state law and regulations. Maintain knowledge of State Regulations and updates for DHS 83 and 89. Attend all mandatory in-service training opportunities. This position does have leadership responsibilities but does not have direct supervisory responsibilities except in the absence of the Executive Director. This position does participate in the performance management functions of the staff. Candidates must be responsible, compassionate, have a mature, positive attitude and want to make a difference in the lives of our residents.
