Philippine Reports (PhilRep)

Philippine Reports is a newly created legal research tool, accessible to the public engaged in legal services, through the internet and also in Digital Video Discs (DVD). Although still in its beta stage, this tool contains over 27,000 cases promulgated from 1985-2010. Some of these cases include a scanned copy of the original document in PDF and continue to increase as more original copies of the decisions and resolutions are being scanned. You can access Philrep online (beta) at http://philrep.judiciary.gov.ph.

Using the PhilRep


A. Home page

1. Search Jurisprudence go to Search Page. 2. Instruction Manual download/view the manual for using Phil. Reports. 3. Supreme Court Portal will take you to Supreme Court of the Philippines Portal Website. 4. Online Web Support our online web support page.

B. Search Page

5. Document String Search (Search Box) this is where you input the word or phrase to be search. Search Filters and Options 6. Type one of the search options, select which types of search do you want to do. Extended when structured group of words or phrased are entered, both of them must exist in the same document. Examples: theft robbery, the word theft and the word robbery must exist in the same document. Use quotation marks around phrases to find the exact phrase. Example: theft and robbery will show results containing the exact phrase theft and robbery. Exact Phrase when structured group of words or phrase linked by stop words are entered, the exact phrase on the same order must exist in the document, excluding the stop words.

Stop words are: and, I, a, about, an, are, as, at, be, by, com, de, en, for, from, how, in, is, it, la, of, on, or, that, the, this, to, was, what, when, where, who, will, with, und, and www. Example: theft with robbery, the exact phrase on the same order will be found, theft and robbery and theft or robbery will be ignored. Any Word when structured group of words or phrase are entered, any of the word that exists in the document will be found. Example: theft robbery, the word theft or the word robbery exist in the document. 7. Sort by select to sort results according to date, ascending or descending. 8. Search Index select on which documents to search Decisions will do search on decision documents. Resolutions will do search on resolution documents. All will do search on both, decision and resolution documents. 9. Filters additional filters for search. Date filter the results within the dates given. Example From: May 1 1980 To: May 31 1980, will only show results promulgated between the given dates. Division filter the results base on division who submitted the document. Example: First Division. Ponente filter the results to whoever is the Ponente of the case, just choose on the names of the ponente and click add, same routine to add several ponentes. To remove selected ponentes, select on the list below and click remove.

10. Search button - click to run the search. On the upper part of the page, you can see the menu buttons. Home will go to the Home page. Previous Hit will go to the previous occurrence of the word you are searching inside the document. Next Hit will go to the next occurrence of the word you are searching inside the document. Find will pop-up a search window, where you can search for a specific word inside the document. Back to Results will go back to results page.

C. Search Result Page

On the search result page, you will see some statistics that show how many times the word you searched appeared and how many documents contain it. Browse on the results and click the title to view the document.

D. Document Page

Inside the document are the details of the case, and the words you searched are highlighted. The links of the syllabus and/or scanned copy of the original document appears on the upper part if available. Sample of syllabus
