Drains and ARD General Process

Preliminary design is undertaken in Advanced Road Design to establish the surface levels, pit locations and preliminary pipe types/sizes. Output from Advanced Road Design is then imported into DRAINS to establish this base data. DRAINS is used to calculate the pipes/pits and ancillary drainage system. DRAINS exports the file with the adjusted pipes/pits. Advanced Road Design imports the adjusted drainage pipes/pits and HGL levels and commences plotting. Details 1. ARD 1.1. Surface/s created and used in the drainage design 1.2. Pipe catalogue and pit catalogues established 1.3. Pipe layout undertaken using selected pits/pipes 1.4. Catchments created and assigned to pits 1.5. Drainage Network Defined 1.6. Pit bypasses defined 2. ARD - Export to Drains 2.1. [Drainage]-[Data Exchange]-[Write to Drains] 3. DRAINS 3.1. Setup DRAINS Project

It is vital that you set up DRAINS so that data imports correctly from Advanced Road Design. To do this you can either: - make a default DRAINS file (.drn file) that contains all the setups required - create a default database file (.db1 file) that is used when you start DRAINS Hydrological Models In order to import from Advanced Road Design, you MUST add an ILSAX Model to DRAINS.

Model Properties:

Rainfall Data DRAINS does its own design of the pipes and pits imported from Advanced Road Design. In order for this to occur users need to establish Rainfall Data and apply those to Select Storms.

Select Storms It is normal to use DRAINS to size the pipes based on Minor storm conditions and to analyse the system performance for the Major storm events. You need to assign the rainfall conditions for each of these events

As well as these aspects users need to set up: - Pipe Data Base - Pit Data Base - Overflow Route Cross Section Data Base

Setup Co-ordinating Databases

Names/Types MUST match between ARD and Drains in order for the import/export processes to work. Users need to be aware of what naming and other conventions are required to ensure that data is correctly transferred between Advanced Road Design and DRAINS. The main components of the software that require careful consideration are as follows:

Naming Conventions and Creation Processes

PIPES ARD DRAINS

ARD Pipe Catalogue: DRAINS Catalogue:

Class Pipe Type

Nom. D mm Nom. Diameter

PITS ARD DRAINS

ARD Pit Name: Eg:

Pit Family#Pit Size or Desc. QLD#SEP1200

DRAINS Pit Identity:

Pit Family: QLD Pit Size : SEP1200

If you click on Properties for the Pit Size, you can enter the pit characteristics. You must do this in DRAINS.

OVERFLOW SECTIONS ARD DRAINS Create an Overflow Route Cross Section named ARD.

The ARD cross section is used by default when pit Bypasses are defined in Advanced Road Design and the data is exported to DRAINS. The Define Pit By-pass command creates overland flow paths that can be read into DRAINS. For DRAINS to utilize the data an Overflow Route Cross Section must be defined. By default, the software will look to assign a DRAINS Overflow Rout Cross Section named ARD to apply the cross section parameters required for its analysis.

CATCHMENTS ARD Catchments defined in Advanced Road Design are named - certain naming conventions must be adhered to in order for them to be imported into DRAINS. Catchment names need a PREFIX of EITHER: PA - paved GR grassed SUP supplementary This name is assigned in Advanced Road Design Creating catchments: Catchments from ARD with prefix of PA, GR or SUP will be imported into DRAINS: DRAINS

Doing the Design Step by Step Tutorial

Create a drainage layout in Advanced Road Design. Open the file \DRAINS Demo\StartDesign.dwg. Note: If you do not want to do the preliminary drainage layout with Advanced Road Design, open the file \DRAINS Demo\Ready to Export.dwg. The Advanced Road Design drainage network (shown below) already exists. An example of a drainage network is as shown below:

The drainage layout process in Advanced Road Design is as follows: Drainage Configure o Pipes Use only Class 2 pits Use only sizes 225,300,450,600 or 750 Pits (Pit Inlet Capacities) o o o ONLY use pits QLD#SEP1200 or QLD#SEP2400 in the design (will match with DRAINS) Create up to 5 pits (if using the DEMO version of DRAINS) Name the catchments with prefix of PA, GR or SUP use the saved catchment types to automatically create a catchment with appropriate name Draw Pipe/Pit Network Catchments

Connect Catchment Areas to Pits Define Network select the downstream pit Define Pit Bypass

Export from Advanced Road Design After laying out the drainage system, export the data for import to DRAINS. Command is Drainage-Data Exchange-Write to Drains:

This creates a database file in the same location as the ARD data:

Import to DRAINS Start DRAINS. Click on File-Open. Then open the file STANDARDSTORMS.drn. This opens a data file containing all the setup information required to receive the Advanced Road Design data file. Check the following:

Hydrological Models Project Setup Create an ILSAX Model if required (one MUST exist in order to import from Advanced Road Design):

Rainfall Data DRAINS does its own design of the pipes and pits imported from Advanced Road Design. In order for this to occur users need to establish Rainfall Data and apply those to Select Storms.

Select Storms DRAINS sizes the pipes based on Major or Minor storm conditions. You need to assign the rainfall conditions for each of these events

Start the command File-Import-Advanced Road Design File: Locate the output file as listed above.

This will create in DRAINS: Pits (with surface elevations from ARD) Pipes (with surface elevations from ARD) Catchments (attached to the Pits and with data from ARD) Overland Flow Routes (using the default Overflow Route Cross Section ARD)

You can review the pits, pipes and overflow routes created:

DRAINS design Use the Run command to analyse and design the pipes/pits. Click on Run-Analyse (you pick the storm analysis) The pipes, pits and overland flows will be resolved:

Export from DRAINS You should check the design and then export to Advanced Road Design.

Click on File-Export-Advanced Road Design File

MAKE SURE that you overwrite the EXISTING file that you used to import data into DRAINS (Drains-1.mdb) Import to Advanced Road Design The updated drainage data can be imported by starting the command Drainage-Data Exchange-Read in Drains Data.

This will update all the pipe sizes/levels as well as starting the Advanced Road Design drainage plotting command:

Setting up for the Tutorial

In order to run the tutorial, it is STRONGLY recommended that the following files are used to guarantee compatibility between Advanced Road Design and DRAINS. Advanced Road Design - Copy the files in the folder \ARD Project Files locally to your computer. It contains the following: o For those wanting to do the ARD drainage layout StartDesign.dwg StartDesign-Data folder o For those wanting just to export to Drains (prelim layout complete) Ready for Export.dwg Ready for Export-Data folder - Copy the files in the folder \ARD Common Folder Files to C:\Program Files\CADApps\Bloomfield\Common This will: add extra on grade and sag pits that work with DRAINS add extra catchment types DRAINS - Copy the file STANDARDSTORMS.drn in the folder \DRAINS Project Files locally to your computer. This file will be used as the default DRAINS database. It contains the following: Pit Data Base Pipe Data Base Overland Route Ensure that you also include the following in DRAINS: Hydrological Model (ILSAX) Major and Minor Storm rainfall data
