COUNSELING CONCEPTS AND THEORIES
With some justification, counseling is frequently referred to as the heart of the guidance program. Central to this process is the effective use of the gathered pertinent. During counseling, the individual is aided to making choices that will lead to self-direction and enhance his total growth and development. Without adequate counseling, time, talent and energy spent on collecting information are wasted.

WHAT IS COUNSELING?
1. The act of exchanging opinions and ideas; consultation. 2. Advice or guidance, especially as solicited from a knowledgeable person. 3. A plan of action. 4. Private, guarded thoughts or opinions: keep ones own counsel. 5. A lawyer or group of lawyers giving legal advice and specially conducting a case in court.

Counseling
is a professional guidance of the individual by utilizing psychological methods especially in collecting case history data, using various techniques of the personal interview, and testing interests and aptitudes. can be defined as relatively short-term, interpersonal, theory-based process of helping persons who are fundamentally psychologically healthy resolve developmental and situational issues. is not an activity where one expert analyzes the client. Rather, it is an activity where counselor and client work as a team to make positive changes in the clients approach life. is a unique relationship in which the Counselors job is to hold up a mirror for the client to see himself or herself in. We all have experiences in which we cant see things about ourselves without a mirror. DESCRIPTIONS OF COUNSELING It maybe in some respects a process but it is also a relationship between two people the counselor and the client. It is relationship established because the client feels a need, not because the counselor feels that client has a need. It is relationship characterized by the warmth, the permissiveness, the acceptance and the understanding of the counselor to the client. It is relationship in which the counselor believes he is involved with a fellow human. It is process concerned with difficulties of an emotional, attitudinal, and a feeling nature. The difficulties or tensions must be such that improvement depends on personal reorganization rather than a change f the environment.

CONCEPTS UNDERLYING COUNSELING


1. The idea of motivation

PURPOSES OF COUNSELING
The primary purpose of counseling is to assist the individual in self realization. This involves helping him (1) understand what he can do and what he should do. (2) Strengthen his best qualities, (3) handle his difficulties rationally rather than be driven by unconscious forces. (4) Find suitable channels for his emotions, and (5) Move toward his more acceptable self. Various aims connected with the primary purpose are those which Dunsmoor and Miller enumerate: To inform the student on matters important to his success. To get information about the student that will be of help in solving problems. To establish a feeling of mutual understanding between student and teachers. To help students work out a plan for solving his difficulties. To help the student know himself better--- his interests, abilities, aptitudes, and opportunities. To encourage and develop special abilities and right attitudes. To inspire successful endeavors toward attainment. To assist the student in planning for his educational and vocational choices. To inform the student on matters important to his success. To get information about the student will be of help in solving problems. To establish the feeling of mutual understanding between student and teacher. To help the student work out a plan for solving his problem. To help the student to know himself better- his interest, abilities, aptitudes and opportunities.

To encourage and develop special abilities and right attitudes. To inspire successful endeavors towards attainment. To assists the students in planning for his educational and vocational choices.

PRINCIPLES OF COUNSELING

Beck gives the following basic principles in counseling;

1. Counseling is based on the recognition of dignity and worth of the individual and on his rights to personal assistance in time of need. 2. Counseling is client-centered being concerned with the optimum development of the whole person and the fullest realization of his potentials for the individual and social ends. 3. Counseling is a continuous, sequential, and educational process. 4. Counseling has a responsibility to society as well as to the individual. 5. Counseling must respect the right of every person to accept or refuse the services it offers. 6. Counseling is oriented around cooperation not compulsion. 7. Counseling implies assistance given by persons in making wise decisions, plans, interpretations and adjustment in the critical situation in life.

GENERAL SITUATIONS THAT DEMAND COUNSELING


When the student need not only information but also an interested interpretation of such information which meets his own difficulties. When the student need a wiser listener with broader experience than his own. When the counselor has access to facilities for aiding in the solutions of students problem to which the student does not have an easy access. When the student is unaware the he has a problem. When the student is aware of the problem, the strain and difficulties it causes him.

When a student is unaware of the presence and nature of problem. When a student is suffering from a major maladjustment or handicap.

QUALITIES OF THE MOST HELPFUL COUNSELING ATHMOSPHERE


Warmth and responsiveness on the part of the counselor. Permissiveness in regard to expression of feeling. The therapeutic limit. Freedom from any type of pressure and coercion.

FUNCTIONS OF A COUNSELOR

1. Establishing Rapport- To express friendliness, cordially, and personal understanding. 2. Cultivating Understanding- To interpret the tests/behavior of the clients strengths and weaknesses and analysis of the sources of information will follow. 3. Planning a Program of Action- To deliver favorable or unfavorable phases of diagnostic/impression of the clients psychological peculiarities and to prescribe the client to cooperate on the method suggest for improvement. 4. Referral to Order Personnel Workers- To refer the client to other personnel and agencies necessary due to counselors limitation wither early in counseling or at the end of the counseling situation.

COUNSELING POSITION

1. Sitting- both must be seated without any tables serving as barrier between them. They must be in a relaxed condition. 2. Open- the counselor must move his hands and arms openly to make the counselee feel that he is accepted. 3. Lean- the counselor must not be too stiff. He should be in a little leaning position to let the counselee feel that he is cared for. 4. Eye to Eye Contact- this should be maintained. Eyes are set to be the windows of our soul. Maintaining the eye to eye contact tells the genuine interest of the counselor to help. 5. Relax- the counselor must be relaxed as counselee starts to ask some questions for clarification while he listens to counselee stories between sobs.
