High school finals rodeo held last week

The 2013 South Dakota High School Rodeo finals were held last week, June 19-23 at the Roundup grounds in Belle Fourche. Area contestants fought hard for the spots to go to the national finals in Rock Springs, Wyo. in July. Scores were affected by the heavy rains, especially for the short go. Point scoring for the finals includes 15 places. First place is given 15 points down to 15th place which is awarded one point. In instances where there is the same score the points are totaled and then divided equally. The first and second rounds each had 15 placings; the short go had 10. Average winners are based upon totaled scores from the three rounds. The champion and runner-up spots are chosen by the total of all the points earned during the season plus, those at the finals. The top four contestants from each event move on to the national finals. In some cases, while a contestant may not have had the best state finals, the had enough season points to place them in the top 15 of total points for the year. First Go Bareback Riding: 1. Pastors Perspective
Satan asked Eve in the Garden, Did God really say...? Pilate asked Jesus 2000 years ago, What is truth? These two questions are still being asked today: Is the Bible really Gods Word? Oh, what is truth anyway? Now the world states quit clearly, There is no absolute truth. But, the world is so wrong. There is absolute truth. Truth is Jesus Christ. Today Jesus is asking each of us the most important question in our lives. Who do YOU say I AM? Your answer is a matter of your eternal life or death. Sadly today, we hear, Jesus was only a good man. Or Just another prophet. But Jesus is so much more. The verses following our text says, From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things ... and that he must be killed, and on the third day be raised to life. Jesus was born to be our Savior. Christ went to Jerusalem to suffer, die, and rise from the dead for all your sins. Yes, Jesus is both God and man. True God to offer a perfect sacrifice for all people, true man to die in our place. Jesus is the Christ, the Anointed one. He is sent from God the Father to be our only Savior. He is the one who gave up his life to secure our full and free forgiveness. He is the one who rose victorious from the grave to secure our freedom from death. He is the one who rules over all things for our good, now and eternally. May we always confess that: Jesus, you are the Christ, the Son of the living God, and MY Savior! But what about you? Jesus asked. Who do you say I am? (Matt 16:15)

Tree Facts

Planting trees around your home

recommended. If utility poles are present on your property line, do not plant within ten feet of the property line. Give buried utilities the same consideration as the utilities you can see. Planting trees around your home creates certain microclimate effects. Large broadleaf trees planted on the southeast, southwest and west provide cooling shade in summer and they dont block the low winter sun. An evergreen windbreak on the north blocks cold winter winds. Large evergreens on the south block warming winter sunlight. New trees need room to grow to their mature size. Never plant a shade tree within 20 feet of your house. Following are recommendations and ratings for tree species. Trees are listed in three categories: Evergreen Trees, Street/Boulevard Trees and Small Trees. All have been rated according to hardiness, shape, disease and insect problems, ease of establishment, maintenance requirements and past performance of the species. EVERGREEN TREES Do not plant these trees near power lines. Ponderosa Pine, Austrian Pine and Scotch Pine are rated excellent; Colorado Blue Spruce is rated very good and Black Hills Spruce is rated good. There are numerous other ornamental evergreens that do well in the area, contact local nurseries for information. S T R E E T / B O U L E VA R D TREES Do not plant these trees near power lines. Green Ash, Linden and Canada Red Cherry are rated excellent; Bur Oak, Kentucky Coffee Tree, Honeylocust and Hackberry, are rated very good and Maples and, Catalpa are rated fair to good. SMALL TREES These trees are suitable to be planted near power lines and streets/boulevards. Crabapples are rated excellent; Amur Chokecherry is rated very good; Mountain Ash, Russian Olive are rated good. Planting your tree properly is very important. Dig a hole, three times the diameter of the pot or root ball and only as deep as the container is tall. Set tree in hole and carefully remove pot by cutting sides with a very sharp utility knife. On balled and burlap trees, carefully cut wires and burlap away from the tree and push down into hole. Do not attempt to remove wire completely as it may damage the root system. Stake the tree only if recommended by nursery. Dont use wire to brace your tree, rather use canvas ties. Be sure to remove stake after the first growing season. Water the tree to completely wet and settle soil. Thereafter, water every seven to ten days during the first growing season and every two to three weeks during the following years as needed. It takes five to ten years for a new tree to become completely established. My source for this news release was the Rapid City Urban Forestry Board. If you would like more information about Planting trees around your home, call Bob Drown at the Conservation Office at 605-244-5222, Extension 4 or by e-mail at robert.drown@sd.nacdnet.net.

By Robert Drown, Natural Resource Specialist The country looks beautiful from the ample amounts of moisture supplied by Mother Nature over the last month. It causes many to think of planting trees around homes and etc. Site selection and species are important factors that require planning and consideration. If your home is in town be sure to check up on any rules and guidelines that they may have on planting trees near the street/boulevard or sidewalk. The location of utilities is an important consideration when planting trees. Planting under power lines is not

Grand River Roundup ............................................................... By Betty Olson

Pretty wild weather this week, wasnt it? Summer officially arrived on Friday and the drought has been broken. Weve got 2.32 inches of rain in three downpours on Friday and Saturday, along with a ton of wind. We didnt have any hail here, but several of our neighbors got hammered by hail and estimated 100mph winds. West of Sorum, the wind blew Tommy Fabris ultra-light airplane out of his shop and totaled it. Trees blew down all over Eric and Amanda Schuchards yard and the wind almost blew a couple of their kids away! Jonathan and Erica Wiechmann were driving into their yard northeast of Bison when wind tore the porch right off their house and slammed it into the pickup they were driving, smashing the windshield and wrecking the pickup. The wind did a lot of damage to their buildings and corrals, but thankfully no one was injured! The High Plains Western Heritage board met Tuesday in Spearfish and Bob Christofferson was selected as our newest director. The Heritage Center will celebrate the National Day of the American Cowboy on July 20th with a Campfire Series show at 2:00 that afternoon. The official National Day of the American Cowboy is July 27, but the Heritage Center is celebrating a week early so we dont interfere with another celebration at New Underwood on the 27th. For more information on that one, contact Slim McNaught at Slim's Custom Leather, 110 S. Madison Ave, New Underwood, SD 57761 (605)7546103. Bob Hanson read the story Jan Swan Wood had written about our local cowgirl, Jessie Hotchkiss, in the Tri-State Livestock News and called me to see if I would accompany him to the Hotchkiss ranch to meet Jessie on Wednesday. Shes interested in the bridle horse tradition of riding and Bob had tied a fancy knot he wanted to give Jessie. Her parents were as interested as Jessie was to see the different ropes and whips Bob brought to show her. Besides the fancy knot he made for Jessie, he brought a horse hair rope, a grass rope, a rawhide lariat, and a beautiful leather whip to show us. Sandy Hotchkiss invited us in for coffee and we dined on freshly baked peach pie, topped with thick sweet cream while Bob told Dan some of the welding tricks hes learned during his 94 years on this old earth. Bob is one of my very favorite old cowboys and has led a colorful life. He was raised on a ranch near Bison, knew most of the old-time cowboys, and is a wonderful horseman. He was a POW during WWII, is an outstanding blacksmith and welder, and was a Perkins Co. deputy sheriff and EMT for several years. As soon as I got back to the ranch, I called Jan Wood and shes going to interview Bobby in July for a story in the Tri-State. That should be really interesting! While Im on the subject of oldtime cowboys, Im trying to locate relatives and acquaintances of the old cowboys who came north with the cattle herds who still live in this area. Im gathering information about Dode Wiley, Jim Brumley, Frank Beck, George Shipley, Ed Dippert, SPY Wilson, Fred Jennewein, Billy Marty, Lewis Painter, Russ Wilson, Greenup Mosely, Billy Clanton, Pecos Dick Turbiville, Tennessee Vaughn, Paul and Thornton Ames, and other old cowboys who stayed in this area after the roundup days were over. If any of you have information to share before the American Cowboy celebration at the Heritage Center in July, email me at bets_reva@hotmail.com or call me at 605-855-2824. Growing up in Bison, I look forward to the annual Gala Days celebration and this year was even more special. Bison High School held an all-school reunion Saturday and we had a wonderful time. Eight members of my graduating class of 16, Alyce Loftsgaard Kriege, Rose Sander Hafner, Betty Vetter Nelson, Ron Kopren, Greg Deibert, Wayne Palmer, Terry Haggart and I gathered in the afternoon at Moms Caf to look through the old school annuals and reminisce about the good old days. Five of our classmates, Linda Jackson, Leon Anderson, Tim Lane, Reed Loughlin, and Bob Erickson, are no longer with us, but Sandy (Butler) Leonard attended grade school with us and she came to our gathering. That evening we joined other Bison graduates and former teachers for supper and a program at the school gym. The storm hit while we were eating and the lights went out for a while, but as soon as electricity was restored, we were able to enjoy the entertainment and visit with old friends. Its amazing how the years change people and we had trouble recognizing folks we grew up with. And they had a hard time recognizing us! Terry Haggart from my graduating class sent me this about the perks of reaching 60 or being over 70 and heading towards 80! Kidnappers are not very interested in you. In a hostage situation you are likely to be released first. No one expects you to run - anywhere. People call at 9 pm and ask, "Did I wake you?" People no longer view you as a hypochondriac. There is nothing left to learn the hard way. Things you buy now won't wear out. You can live without sex but not your glasses. You get into heated arguments about pension plans. You no longer think of speed limits as a challenge. You quit trying to hold your stomach in no matter who walks into the room. You sing along with elevator music. Your eyes won't get much worse. Your investment in health insurance is finally beginning to pay off. Your joints are more accurate meteorologists than the national weather service. Your secrets are safe with your friends because they can't remember them either. Your supply of brain cells is finally down to manageable size. And never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.
