WHY EMMAUS? WHY NOW?

According to a 2012 report by IBESR (social services in Haiti,) there are almost 800 documented orphanages in Haiti. Over 30,000 children are housed in these institutions. IBESR has recently stated that they are going to start enforcing the rules and these children must leave these institutions which they call home when they turn 18. This has put those who care for the well -being of the orphaned in Haiti into a tailspin. Orphanages all over Haiti are figuring out how to effectively transition their unprepared and many times, uneducated youth into the harsh realities that Haiti has to offer them. Many orphanages in Haiti take in children when they are young and obviously vulnerable, and have thought little about how to make sure they productively transition into Haitian society when they are older. The fact that there is only one other transition home in Haiti, besides Emmaus House, is evidence of this. What will be the reality these children face once released to survive in the poorest country in the world? Without skills and education, many of them have no choice but to turn to living on the streets, crime or prostitution to get by. This could be the reality for the youth of Cap Haitien Childrens Home as well. However, along with the elders of the Southwest church of Christ in Ada, OK, the staff and Board of Directors for Emmaus House are fighting to help these youth transition into society with the skills, education, and maturity they will need to become strong, giving, productive members of society and the church in Haiti. We invite you to partner with us financially as well as in prayer as we serve the youth of Emmaus House.

According to the World Bank, in 2012, Haiti is the poorest country in the Americas and one of the poorest in the world. Over half of its population of 10 million lives on less than US $1 per day.

WHAT ARE OUR NEEDS?

By our next newsletter, we will have a better idea regarding specific needs that can be donated as well as an Amazon wish list. As of right now, our biggest needs are spiritual as well as monetary. - PRAYER: Please pray for us every day. Pray for the encouragement and strength of Hunter and Jillian as they serve as administrators as well as Jonathans family as they take on the challenge of parenting the youth of Emmaus House. Please pray for our youth, that their hearts and minds will be open to diligently working the program we are setting before them in giving them hope for their futures.

MEET OUR STAFF

The Kittrells: Administrators
Hunter and Jillian have been leading short term mission trips to Haiti since 2007. These visits each summer never seemed to satisfy their thirst for their work there, so in January of 2011 they moved to Haiti full time to serve as the administrators at Cap Haitian Childrens Home. Graduates of Lipscomb University, Hunter studied Environmental Science and Jillian received a Masters in Special Education. Their hearts are fully invested in helping the youth of Emmaus House, many of

MEET OUR YOUTH: LOBE

Jean-Wilson Janvier, also known as Lobe (lo-bay) or just Wilson, is a newly turned adult! He celebrated his 18th birthday on May 12th. He just passed the 10th grade, and is looking forward to the opportunities and help that the Emmaus House will offer him, including helping him finish secondary school. His dream is to become a radiologist, and hopefully he will be able to earn scholarships to get to college after high school in order to pursue that dream! He loves playing and watching basketball, and he would like to coach a basketball team some day. In his spare time, he likes hanging out with his friends and watching movies. His favorite food is a typical Haitian dishrice, beans and fried chicken! Wilsons favorite bible verse is Romans 8:38-39 which reads For I am convinced that neither death for life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Wilson has a bright future ahead of him, but he needs sponsors to help him get there. Sponsorships for the Emmaus House can go to a specific child to take care of monthly expenses, including their schooling, food, medical savings, and a monthly salary.
