THE PRICE OF FREEDOM Todays readings promise that if we could escape from the shackles of our attachments we would be happier, freer, more peaceful. Lukes Gospel begins, When the days for Jesus being taken up were fulfilled, he resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem. Aware of the opposition and danger awaiting him, Jesus went forward. Naturally, brave people volunteered to join him. But Jesus cautioned them. Could they give up their attachments to home and possessions, friends and family, conventional responsibilities? A tough challenge, but not unprecedented. Centuries before, Elijah had criticized Elisha for wanting time just to kiss his parents good-bye before following Elijah. Just where would such a path take Elisha? Or Jesus followers? Or us? Paul tells us, For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery. The outcome is freedom, but if the requirements dont give us pause, then maybe were not paying close enough attention. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

Thirteenth SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - JUNE 30, 2013

YEAR OF FAITH: JUNE 2013 Rediscovering the Eucharist: Celebration and Adoration
Meditation May this Year kindle in every believer a resolve to profess the faith in its fullness, with renewed conviction, and to celebrate the faith more intensely especially in the Eucharist, the summit toward which all the Church's activity is directed and the source from which all the Church's energy flows. Without liturgy, the profession of faith would lack the grace to bear fruit in Christian witness (see Benedict XVI, Door of Faith, 9, 11). How providential that June opened, in this Year of Faith, with the solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi). June's Sunday Gospels showed Jesus comforting the afflicted and forgiving sin, predicting his saving passion and challenging would-be disciples to take up their cross daily and follow him. But faithful discipleship is impossible without the grace that flows from Christ's Eucharistic sacrifice, without the comfort bestowed by Jesus' abiding Eucharistic presence. Thus June became a grace-filled opportunity to renew our appreciation of the multiple dimensions of the Eucharist by rediscovering the riches of the Church's teaching: Eucharist as sacrifice and paschal banquet (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1322-1372, 1382-1390; Compendium, 271, 275, 280-281; YouCat, 212); Christ's Real Presence (Catechism, 1373-1381; Compendium, 282-283; YouCat, 216-218); full, conscious and active participation (internal and external) (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, 14; Catechism, 1345-1355); fruits of the Eucharist in our personal and communal lives (Catechism, 1391-1401); Eucharist as pledge of future glory (Catechism, 1402-1405).

Mission Study the Church's teaching on the Eucharist; prepare more prayerfully for Sunday (daily) Mass; spend time each week in Eucharistic adoration. Our new Eucharistic Adoration Chapel is now open 7 days per week 8:30 a.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Parishioners are needed to commit ONE HOUR per week for a year.
There are still many hours open on Saturday and Sunday. Please sign in the register placed on a stand next to the chapel entrance door.

CCD REGISTRATION
REGISTRATIONS ARE NOW BEING TAKEN FOR THE 20132014 CCD PROGRAM. WE ENCOURAGE EARLY REGISTRATION. REGISTRATION FORMS ARE AVAILABLE IN THE PARISH AND CCD OFFICE. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The pilgrim experience of going by foot to Santiago de Compostella, the shrine of St. James, reaches its high point a month from now at the feast of the Apostle. By now, tens of thousands of pilgrims are already on the road. Typically, they cover twelve to twenty miles a day through rough territory. The difficult journey and the often primitive lodging facilities are made bearable by the joy of the pilgrims, their songs and prayers. When their journey is documented properly, they receive the scallop shell, a reminder not only of James the fisherman, but also his call to fish for human beings and to baptize the nations. In the Middle Ages, those who wore this badge on their hats were granted lodging and hospitality wherever they went. Next to the palm, the sign of a Jerusalem pilgrim, the scallop shell was most highly prized. In the Middle Ages, some people so enjoyed the pilgrim road, although it was filled with discomfort and danger, that they spent most of their lives on the road. Today, some people take up the route for exercise, but are drawn gradually into the spirituality of the journey. As you make your summer travels, always fold in an element of pilgrimage: a long walk through beautiful countryside, a visit to a church, a prayer of gratitude for your journey through lifes hills and valleys. J. S. Paluch
