Eldain paced through the embassy; representatives of all allied villages were already present, but he had no idea on how to bring this to them. How could he when he would basically be telling them they needed to secure an ancient construction site and finish what was being built there while attempting to stop anyone else from doing the same. Yup, bringing about the end of the world by enslaving it before anyone else can do it. Thats going to be a real walk in the park, this conversation.

Prospects for modern Salt Mining in Nigerias Nasarawa State by Terhemba Dzomon

Historical facts available to The ROAD prove that salt mining has made an industry amongst the people of Keana and Awe as far back as 1232AD. So, the salt villages of Nasarawa State are not just a place for the promotion of commerce with salt as the major commodity that is always in the market

At the outskirts of Awe town in the Awe local government area lays a more or less comatose ancient salt belt in what is popularly referred to in Nasarawa State as old Awe. To a first time visitor who finds him or herself in the ancient salt city, the belt depicts nothing of any economic value, but a wreckage of the common sites of Environmental Degradation that abound all over the potentially endowed Solid Minerals Nasarawa State, located in the NorthCentral region of Nigeria.

place but a rare article of tourist attraction in the state. Keana, which is acclaimed as the salt pot of the state, aside Awe and Akiri is a place where local salt refinery is regarded as an enterprise of women.

In the salt villages of Keana for instance, characterized by mud huts with thatched roofs of grass, claypots are observed to be lined up in ridges in front of each hut. The pots are said to be an inheritance of age-long generations. Sources also say the pots are part of the local salt refinery

Of course, like spent grain from a brew, what is observed on parts of the salt belt is a true representation of mine lines as an aspect of Environmental degradation from past activities of local miners in the area. So is the salt belt in the Keana local government area located along the same geographic zone in the southern axis of the state.

process in the area. Findings about the quality of salt in Nasarawa State also prove that the brine of ponds where the raw material is gotten is often greenish and more brackish than some of the saltsprings in other locations in the Benue trough.

The traditional way of refining salt by the people is manual, time-consuming Although Keana was carved out of Awe by incessant exercises of state and local governments, the two local governments have a common determinant of their basic economies, which is attached to the existing salt belts, the result of deposits of salt as a solid mineral in sizable quantities that have ever added value to traditional economy of people of the two local government areas. and rigorous, hence their inability to producein commercial quantities to meet the market demands of consumers in Nigeria and the international market. It is however worthy of note that, despite the hardship through which these people subject themselves in production of coarse high quality non-iodised white salt granules, they have never relented in doing so over the years.

Prospects for modern Salt Mining in Nigerias Nasarawa State (continued)

It is against the foregoing that the move of Dangote Group of Companies to partner the Nasarawa State government through the federal government to invest in commercial production of salt from the salt belts of Nasarawa State is highly commendable.

The journey towards modern processing of salt in Nasarawa State started with efforts by the erstwhile administration in the state. This did not help matters as the two salt processing units constructed and commissioned in Awe and Keana could not be used for any production even before the exit of the administration from office.

However, a stakeholder forum was recently organised by the State Ministry of Science and Technology in collaboration with the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC), at which the Nasarawa State Governor, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, represented by his deputy, Damishi Luka Barau commended the intention for intervention on processing of existing large quantities of salt as a raw material in the state by RMRDC and the Dangote Group of Companies.

Prospects for modern Salt Mining in Nigerias Nasarawa State (continued)

It is gladdening that the move to establish a chain of process industries in Awe and Keana for production of salt started with involvement of the traditional institutions in the area with a visit to the palace of the Emir of Awe,

The Ministry of Science and Technology in the state is said to have put in place a comprehensive plan for large scale production of salt at the Nasarawa State salt industries, through a public private partnership (PPP) programme. At the investment forum, stakeholders noted that the involvement of Dangote Group in modern production of salt in the state is a sign of commitment of the Nasarawa State Government to the project, which therefore calls for proper funding of the project. Above all, it is imperative to improve on the mode of production in order to enhance quality and proper marketing of the product after production, so as to shift from low productivity by crude methods employed in the process of brine by local miners.

Alhaji Abubakar Umaru II and that of the Osana of Keana, Senator Emmanuel Elayo. Thanks to these contacts with the two paramount rulers, it is hoped that the intended investors at the Awe and Keana salt mines have become abreast with conditions in which the salt mining communities in the two areas existed hitherto.

The communities of old Awe town, like those in Keana where the salt belts are situated may have become used to living with the hazards associated with this golden gift from God. They have apparently lost the glory of good housing as a result of the content of salt in the texture of soils in the area. Just like the soil textures, so is their quality of water, which is not fit for

As part of promoting growth and development for the youths of the state, which is being pursued vigorously by the present democratic administration as it seeks to partner the Dangote Group of Companies on production of salt in the state, Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura maintains that his government is out to provide job opportunities while also encouraging workable and enduring indigenous entrepreneurship in the state with the use of modern methods of processing salt as means to achieve his desire.

domestic use. Apart from these problems, salt mining and processing like subsistence farming has remained their only means of economic survival over the years.

A walk through the salt belt proves this fact, as the vast mine lines seen on the salt belt shows that the belt is demarcated into miniature units which are said to be earmarked according to family lineages as an inheritance, just like it is the case with farmlands, which are passed to living members of families from generation to generation. These challenges may have probably informed the emanation of present day Awe town as a shift from salty prone areas of old Awe town.

Prospects for modern Salt Mining in Nigerias Nasarawa State (continued)

It is in the light of this understanding that the prospecting investment stakeholders planning to go into partnership with the Nasarawa State government should also envision a social responsibility development agenda for the host communities that are already living within the vicinity of the salt mines in the State in their feasibility studies for the establishment of modern industries for processing salt in the state.

The assertion by Al-Makura that, given proper investment in salt as a resource and other solid minerals discovered within the state, Nasarawa State shall cease to depend on allocations from the federation accounts as a major source of its income is certainly a fact of truth.

Nasarawa State which has its slogan as Home of Solid Minerals is no doubt one of the most endowed in terms of mineral resources in Nigeria as the three major components of geology of the country; basement complex, younger granites and sedimentary rocks are all exposed within the state. As such, all known minerals that occur in the geological sphere of Nigeria are available on the 12,000 square kilometres undulating landscape of Nasarawa State. The state government, along with its Ministry of Science and Technology now opens its arms to say the harvest is ready, but the harvesters are lacking, therefore all calibre of investors are invited to join Dangote Group of Companies at the Nasarawa State solid minerals feast to harvest from its avalanche of mineral deposits.

Hello dear readers,

And welcome once more to Funny Holidays, the article that brings joy to a small sliver of the online world by exploring the fun side of secular and religious festivities. Lets take a look at what the month of August has to offer us.

Frighteningly, well skip past the first days of August and fast forward to August 10th, since what comes before is rather boring. Now, August 10th is National Lazy Day and while Im somehow sure weve witnessed a similar holiday in past editions, who wouldnt want another one of these days, to be honest? Basically, all youve got to do is nothing. Just sit back, relax, order some pizza and forget about everything.

One day later, we have August 11th. This particular date seems set to take us back into the tender time of our childhood with Play in the Sand Day. Ah, indeed I still remember all the hours Ive spent and the sunburns Ive earned building what my mind conceived as impenetrable fortresses of sand, only to have those pesky waves completely obliterate them at some point. Curse those waves.

August 15th brings us National Failures Day. I dont want any of you to think youre failures, but there mustve been at least something in your life youve tried to accomplish and, sadly, failed at it. Maybe its something big or maybe its something silly, like burning your morning toast. But hey, he who tries succeeds hopefully.

Skipping ahead to August 20th, we have National Lemonade Day. You know the saying, When life brings you lemons, you make lemonade. Well, on August 20th, you should squeeze those lemons. Maybe make a lemonade stand in your neighborhood or something; in this economy, making a few bucks is never a bad idea.

August 24th is interesting, if somewhat frightening. Why? Well, because its National Knife Day. Considering mankind has been using knives for two and a half millennia, I guess we do have something to celebrate. This particular tool weve developed is indeed very useful. Just imagine trying to dice onions without one! Still, be careful how you celebrate this day. I kind of foresee some bad injuries from this one.

On August 26th, we observe Womens Equality Day. This is actually a rather important holiday and I thought it deserved mentioning. Namely, on this day in 1920, the women of the US won the right to vote. This victory was the culmination of almost a century of hard work and peaceful protests, starting from 1848. Girls, set this day aside to say thanks to all the women who worked hard for gaining equality and womens rights. Everyone, celebrate this day by continuing to promote equality in all its forms.

Finally, we have August 30th and Frankenstein Day. Todays the birthday of Marry Shelley, the author of this now classical horror story.

See you guys next time!

Dear contestants, Please note that we expect you to send the Target Numbers and/or Riddles one per email; this means that you shouldn't send them all at once, in the same email. We impose this limitation so that the little contests we organize with these puzzles could be more fair. So, please - when submitting your solutions and answers, please remember to send the answers to the Target Numbers and Riddles in separate messages, one per each number or riddle. Thanks in advance, Your Magazine Team

doesnt have to be. You may kick out any number, based on your preference. Still, please remember that in the final equation you must use only 7 numbers and not all 8. In addition, unlike in the previous version, you must use all of the 7 numbers this means that if you were to get to the target number with less than seven numbers used, we will not accept your answer as correct.

ATTENTION: When submitting your result, please dont just send us your final solution. For obvious reasons, we also need the formula you used to get the number. All of the formulas will be checked to see if they are accurate and give the number you have submitted. In addition, you must also provide us with the 7 numbers youve selected to use out of 8 (or at least tell us which number you didnt use) this is purely so that we can analyze your equation with more ease, without having to look through everything in order to discern which number you kicked out. The first to solve one of these target numbers and email the correct answer to magazine@travian.com will receive a reward of 15 gold (per target number).

Target Number
Dear readers, We have made some changes to the Target Number game. Please read the instructions carefully, since the rules have now changed. You are presented with a target number along with eight other smaller numbers. You are supposed to use these eight numbers and apply the five basic mathematical operations (subtracting, adding, dividing, multiplying and brackets) in order to get the target number. The numbers are such that they will give you the exact target number once theyve been properly combined. However, you need only use 7 numbers to achieve the task one of the numbers you are given is surplus and is not needed at all to reach the target. Example: Target number: 490 Available numbers: 18, 6, 8, 4, 12, 25, 1, 19 Operations: +, -, *, /, ( ) Combine the numbers to get the target number. You may only use the numbers only once. You do not have to use all of the offered numbers. 4 * ((19+1) + 8(25 12)) 6 = 4(20 + 8 * 13) 6 = 4(20 + 104) 6 = 4 * 124 6 = 496 6 = 490

This month's target numbers:

TARGET NUMBER ONE:

Target number: 720 Available numbers: 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 5, 7, 8 Operations: +, -, *, /, ( ) Combine the numbers to get the target number. You may use the numbers only once. Only seven out of the eight numbers may be used.

TARGET NUMBER TWO: Target number: 621 Available numbers: 1, 2, 3, 5, 12, 18, 121, 144 Operations: +, -, *, /, ( ) Combine the numbers to get the target number. You may use the numbers only once. Only seven out of the eight numbers may be used.

In this particular case, we have discerned that the number 18 isnt needed, but it
