SOLVING TWO- STEP EQUATIONS Two-step equations are equations that require using more than one inverse operation in order to solve. First step: combine like terms on each side. Second step: simplify by using inverse operations of addition and subtraction. Third step: simplify by using inverse operations of multiplication and division. CAUTION: When solving a two step inequality and you multiply or divide by a negative number, you must reverse the inequality symbol. 2 x + 6 = 10 2 x + 6 6 = 10 6 2x = 4 Example 1: 2 4 x= 2 2 x=2 2 x + 6 10 2 x + 6 6 10 6 2 x 4 Example 2: 2 4 x 2 2 x 2 Remember, switch the sign when multiplying and dividing by a negative.

Solve the following: 1.) -3x + 5 = 20 d 5 = 14 7 2.) 18= 6 x c 7 3.) -8 -t = -25 4.) 47 = 12 - 7x

5.)

6.) 3 = 31 +

7.) 3m - 4 = 11

Writing Equations 8.) Jake wants to buy a snowmobile. The cost is $6,000. He has $3500 to put on a down payment. He is saving $400.00 per month. How many months will it take until Jake has enough money to buy the snowmobile?

9.) You had $235 in your savings account nine weeks ago. You withdrew the same amount each week for eight weeks. Your balance now is $75.00. How much did withdraw each week? VARIABLES ON BOTH SIDES OF THE EQUATION You solve equations with variables on both sides by first combining like terms on each side of the equation. 4x 4 = 2x + 8 4x 4 + 4 = 2x + 8 + 4 4 x = 2 x + 12 4 x 2 x = 2 x 2 x + 12 Example: 2 x = 12 2 12 x= 2 2 x=6 Solve inequalities the same way, remember to switch the sign when multiplying or dividing by a negative. Solve the following: 10.) 9a + 2 = 4a - 18 12.) -15 + 6x = -8x + 13 14.) x + x + 18 = 4x 11.) 4x + 4 = 2x + 36 13.) 2a + 6 = -a - 8 15.) -2a + 7 = a - 8 MULTI-STEP EQUATIONS Solve these equations the same way you solved the problems in the first part of the lesson; we just need to add one step. Additional step: Use the distributive property to simplify the problem before combining like terms. Solve the following 16.) 4(a + 5) = 2a + 12 17.) a + 3 = 5(2a - 3)

18.) 2(x-3) + 5 = 3(x-1) Solve the Inequality 20.) 2y - 3 -5 23.) -3(x-2) > 12

19.)

3x 2 = x 8 4

21. ) 6 - x > 3 24.) 2x + 7 > x - 10

22.) 7x - 3 46 25.) -9c + 3 21
