Be prepared for severe summer weather

Stroll down memory lane

By BARRETT NELSON EMO Coordinator t is that time of year again the severe storm season. Monday, June 10th was the first time this year that we had a short, but real tornado warning. Thunder, lightning, hail and even tornadoes can develop quickly and have the potential to be extremely dangerous. Thats why it is important that you understand the risks created by severe summer weather and how you can protect yourself - weather or not. Look for the signs. Hot and/or muggy days and warm nights indicate that thunderstorms may be forming, so be prepared. Always keep your eyes on the sky and watch for the possible development of storms. Listen for the warnings. Environment Canada

monitors the weather. If a severe storm is on the horizon, the weather service issues watches, advisories and warnings through national, regional and local radio and television stations and Environment Canadas weather radio. A weather watch occurs when conditions are favourable for a severe storm, even though one has not yet developed. This is usually issued early in the day. A weather warning occurs when severe weather is happening or hazardous weather is highly probable. Th e Weatherradio network broadcasts weather and environmental information 24 hours a day directly from Environment Canadas storm prediction centres.

By SARAH DALRYMPLE esidents of the Minnedosa Personal Care Home got a glimpse of the past through the Minnedosa Valley Cruizers recent visit. Walking up and down the sidewalk in front of the Care Home, it felt like stepping back into the 1950s and 1960s with many classic cars on display. Th e evening was arranged by Holly Morrison, a nurse at the Care Home, and her husband, Don. Th e nice weather and shiny cars also brought out other members of the community to see the assortment of classic vehicles. After everyone had a good look at each vehicle, the residents were able to vote for their favourite car. Th e winner received a large blue ribbon and a collectible toy car. Darcy James came in second place with his 1965 Mustang, while Ray Orr came in first with his 1966 Red Corvette, which just so happened to be one of my favourites.
