2013
From the Pastors Desk Recycling
You may be wondering why I am using the newsletter to reflect upon recycling. For some, this may be a strange issue for the pastor to focus upon in the newsletter. However, the reason that I am writing on recycling is that at the last council meeting, the council agreed to have a recycling container placed upon our property as a place for people within the community to take advantage of the recycling efforts within Jackson County. By having this container in this part of the county, it encourages people who might not otherwise recycle to take the time and energy to recycle paper, cardboard, plastic and metal. After the success of the Earth Day event with a recycling opportunity, collection of steel, collection of hazardous material and old electronics, this seems like a good next step as we seek to be more environmentally conscious. The council decided that we would work with Jackson County Recycling District to make this opportunity available. However, the convenience of having a place to take recycling closer than having to take everything to town needs to be respected. This is not a place to bring trash or to dump unwanted itemsthis is a place to recycle particular items. If we have trouble with people dumping trash or other unrecyclable items; the container will be taken away. The council wants to balance the opportunity for people to recycle with making sure that our property is well cared for and respected. Debbie Hackman, Executive Director for the recycling district, informed the council that they take every step possible to track down people who illegally dump and turn their names over to the proper authorities. It may not seem obvious but the placing of a recycling container on our property and providing this opportunity for people to recycle fits into our mission and reflects our core values. Our mission of Walking in Faith-Sowing Christs Love encompasses living out our faith by being stewards of the earth and caring for the resources of the world. In the creation account in Genesis, Adam and Eve were to have dominion over creation. This does not mean that they can use creation for whatever they wanted; rather it calls them to take care of creation. One way to live this out is through attempting to recycle items rather than place them in a landfill. In terms of our core values, this stewardship of the earth is a part of our own spirituality and how we live out our Christian faith as baptized children of God. This opportunity is also an outreach to our community and communicates that our faith calls us to care for our world.

Upcoming Worship
Below are the lessons and some thoughts about the upcoming Sundays.

June 2nd: TextLuke 7:1-10

Please take some time to look over the lesson and reflect upon the questions in preparation of the upcoming weeks in worship.

The text tells the miracle story of Jesus healing a centurions servant. A centurion is a leader in the Roman army. Do you think that this man is an unusual choice for Jesus to perform a miracle for? How would you have reacted to the story? What does this tell us about whom Jesus is and his power and authority? Why would the news about Jesus begin to spread in the surrounding country?

June 9th: TextJames 4

James is a letter to Christians about a variety of topic related to living a Christian life. In this chapter, James cautions people about being a friend to the world. Rather than allow the world to influence us, we are to submit ourselves to God. The chapter also warns us about judging others and boasting about tomorrow.

June 16th: TextLuke 7:36-8:3

The story for today tells of a dinner with Jesus eating with people of questionable character. A Pharisee questions Jesus about allowing sinful people to touch him and why he allows these people to even be in his presence. Jesus goes on to tell a parable about a moneylender who forgives the debt of 2 different peopleone owes a little and the other a lot. The question is: Who will love the person more? The purpose of this whole encounter is about forgiveness and who is worth to be forgiven.

June 23rd: TextLuke 8:26-39

The lesson for today is a miracle/healing story where Jesus casts out the demons and sends them into a group of pigs and then the pigs run off a cliff into a lake and drown. In our world today there is great need for people to experience healing and the power of Christs power within their lives.

June 30th: TextLuke 9:51-62

Todays text speaks about discipleshipfollowing Jesus. What does it mean to follow Jesus? What excuses do we make for not following Jesus? How do we allow distractions to keep us from being the disciples that God is calling us to be?

Mission SpotlightCommunity Diner

The Community Diner came out of a community meeting which sought to bring interested persons together to gain momentum toward the goal of providing the basic need of food to people in our community that struggle to have daily bread for themselves and their families. The Community Diner began serving meals March 21012 at the Seymour Community Center (Chestnut St.) with 15 people attending. We have continued to serve a hot meal on the 3rd Monday of each month. The number of people we serve continues to grow each month. We currently average around 50 people each month. Our Vision is to be able to serve 50-100 hot meals to patrons needing our service. We hope in the future to be able to offer more meals and have a permanent location to serve these meals. The Community Diner is also seeking volunteers to prepare and serve the meals. Currently the board is working on finding a permanent location for meal preparation and serving. In order to support the Community Diner monetarily, you can at any time mark on the offering envelope a gift for Community Diner. These gifts will be forwarded to the Community Diner. Pastor Steve and Teri DeVoe currently serve on the board.

MISSION CARE:
The food pantry items being collected in June are canned meats (tuna/chicken, etc.). Please place your donations in the wooden box in the hallway near the kitchen, or in the basket near the main entry doors. Donations are given to food pantries at Provisions, Anchor House, and Human Services. Last month we received a thank you for our food donations from Anchor House. We also received a reminder that anyone donating items to Goodwill may ask to have vouchers given to the Anchor House. These vouchers enable Anchor House residents to shop for necessities at Goodwill free of charge, thanks to your donations to the store! Ask Trish for more details. Profits of $410.40 were generated from our Earth Day event!!! This amount was donated to the Jackson County Clothing Center to purchase new socks and underwear for needy families. Along with a thank you for helping with the Clothing Centers mission, we received the following information In April [the Jackson Co Clothing Center]gave out over 8,000 items and had 67 new families. This indicates the acute needs we are helping to meet with our donation! Thanks so much to the generous folks who have contributed recently to the Care Team Family Care Fund. Funds were depleted over the winter, but we are once again in a position to help others with small-scale emergency monetary needs. Since this fund has been in existence we have been able to help families during short term emergency situations by assisting with necessities like childcare, utilities, etc.

HEALTH & WELLNESS CARE:
Get out and enjoy Gods creation while you get your body moving! The church parking lot is a great area for walking and bike riding, and when its too hot outside to exercise the building is a nice, cool place area to get your workout! In the picnic grove, opportunities abound for exercise and recreation. There are walking trails through the woods, a newly-fenced basketball court, and activity areas for small children. During warm weather the Turbo Kick and Zumba classes held in the Fellowship Room on Sunday afternoons will be put on hold. Watch for details on the Welcome Center about the next Zumba class which will start again in the fall. Contact Melissa Christian @ 498-2441 if you have questions or suggestions. Thanks, Melissa, for helping to make these fitness opportunities available close to home.

STEPHEN MINISTRY:
Stephen Minister group meetings continue to be held monthly. Continuing education for the next few months will be led by Kendall Alstatt with materials entitled Five Lies that Ruin Relationships by Chip Ingram. The group is learning to recognize habits that jeopardize human relationships, in hopes of helping care receiver/caregiver relationships as well as personal relationships. Monday, June 24 May Stephen Minister group meeting will take place from 6:30 to 9:00 .

CRISIS CARE:
Several months ago the High School youth held a breakfast to benefit the family of Helen Carter of Cortland. Helen is recovering from a brain stem stroke brought on by complications from spinal meningitis. Helen has had a few set-backs recently, but she is still hoping to be home in the very near future. We are continuing to seek opportunities to help Helen and her family. Please continue to pray for the Carter family.

FRIENDLY CARE:
St. Paul-Borchers recently welcomed new members. One way to help new folks feel welcome is to converse with them on Sunday mornings. We are hoping to be able to print short Getting to Know You articles about new members so that conversing is easy. Let Trish know if you would be interested in interviewing new members for this purpose.
