ABSTRACT
Diah Ayu Nova Anastasia. 2012. Students Ability in Using Present Tenses a Case
Study in SMAN 1. (Supervised by Agustinus Ruruk Lilak and Kamsinah Darwis).
The objective of this research was to find out the ability of the students used
present tenses.
The writer did two methods of collected data to achieve the purpose. The
collected data were using library research and field research. In the library research,
the writer collected the data by reads some textbooks, essay references and
guidances explain the data which were intended to support the subject matter of this
thesis. While in the field research, the writer took 40 students as samples of this thesis
to do written test concerning the use of present tenses. The type of the written test
were using multiple-choice test which consist of 40 items. Furthermore, in analyzed
the data, writer used quantitative method. Quantitative method focused on numeric
description to count the correct answer, total score, and the mean score.
The result showed that the mean score of the students in SMAN 1 Mamuju to
use present tenses is 53.5. The score is classified as Poor according to criteria that
have been set up. The analyzed of the data showed that the students in SMAN 1
Mamuju still have problems in using present tenses, the problem are difficult to
distinguish between present perfect tense and present perfect continuous tense and
between active and passive voice.

Diah Ayu Nova Anastasia. 2012. Students Ability in Using Present Tenses a Case
Study at SMAN 1 Mamuju. (Dibimbing oleh Agustinus Ruruk Lilak dan Kamsinah
Darwis).
Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui kemampuan siswa dalam
menggunakan present tenses.
Penulis telah melakukan dua metode pengumpulan data. Pengumpulan data
menggunakan penelitian pustaka dan penelitian lapangan. Dalam penelitian pustaka
penulis mengumpulkan data dengan membaca beberapa buku pelajaran dan buku
pedoman dalam menjelaskan data untuk mendukung pokok permasalahan dalam
skripsi ini. Sedangkan penelitian lapangan, penulis melibatkan 40 siswa sebagai
sampel dalam skripsi ini untuk mengerjakan tes tertulis tersebut yang membahas
tentang penggunaan present tenses. Jenis tes tertulis tersebut adalah tes pilihan ganda
yang terdiri dari 40 soal. Selanjutnya, dalam menganalisis data, penulis menggunakan
metode kuantitatif. Metode kuantitatif berfokus pada angka yang digunakan untuk
menghitung jawaban yang benar, jumlah nilai dan nilai rata-rata.
Hasil dari penelitian menunjukkan bahwa nilai rata-rata siswa SMAN 1
Mamuju dalam menggunakan present tense adalah 53.5. nilai ini diklasifikasikan
Buruk berdasarkan standar nilai yang telah di tetapkan. Analisis data tersebut
menunjukkan bahwa siswa-siswa SMAN 1 Mamuju masih memiliki masalah dalam
penggunaan present tenses, yaitu sulitnya membedakan antara present perfect tense
dan present perfect continuous tense serta antara kalimat pasif dan kalimat aktif.
