How the ACT is Scored


The ACT is scored by taking an average of the scores of all four tested categories. All of the categories are scored on a scale of 1 36. In the event the average score is not a whole number, the ACT rounds the average score to the nearest whole number. Like other standardized tests, the ACT has created a College Readiness Benchmark for each subject category.

The readiness benchmark is supposed to be an accurate determination of whether a student is academically or intellectually prepared for college. The ACT college readiness benchmark scores are 18 for English, 21 for reading, 22 for mathematics, and 24 for science. The weighted average of all four of the college readiness benchmarks is 21.25, which means the average test taker who gets a 21.1 fails to meet the level of readiness that t college. In fact, the ACT reports that only 23% of all test takers in 2009 succes four categories.
