Lesson/Unit Objectives

The students are being asked to combine writing skills by writing a story, and an their art skills by illustrating their story. The students will create a myth to explain a natural phenomenon, such as, tornado, hurricane, or blizzard. The students will create a animal, human, hybrid as a character and draw/illustrate a part of their story.

Greek Greeks Roman Romans gods goddesses Myth: a traditional story serving to explain some phenomenon, custom, etc. Hybrid: the offspring of two animals/plants of different varieties, species. Anything of mixed origin. Contemporary: living or happening in the same period. Of the same age, modern. The students will be assessed on the quality of their myth, and the writing of the myth. (grammar and spelling will be checked) The students will also be assessed on the quality of their picture to represent an aspect of their story. It could be a volcanic eruption, tornado, or something to with the Earth's rotation. Although you may already understand why something occurs, pretend that you do not and invent an explanation. (suggestion sheet provided) 2. Make up a story of how the phenomenon might have occurred. Maybe some mythical creature or a mysterious person caused it. Come up with several explanations that seem reasonable to you. (Refer to list of names or make up your own) 3. Select some part of your story that seems especially interesting to you and on a sheet of paper, draw your character and a part of the story. 4. Draw what your imaginary character (human, animal, hybrid) might look like. Now think about motivation. Some mythological characters were warlike, or exceedingly strong, or very jealous. Why does this character behave the way it does? In the lore of Native Americans, for example, "Raven" was responsible for many things that happened, and he was very mischievous. *** The story will be completed first and then handed in to Ms. Field to be corrected and typed. ** The picture will be completed second.
