Aloe Verite, Source Naturals, 33.8 fl oz (1 Liter)

Whole-Leaf Aloe Vera Drink Natural Flavor Made with Organically Grown Aloe Vera Leaves Minimum of 2,100 mg/Liter of Polysaccharides Dietary Supplement The aloe plant, also known as Aloe Vera or Aloe barbadensis, has been revered for thousands of years. Hieroglyphics show that the ancient Egyptians used aloe. In more recent times, aloe has played an important role in the folk herbal traditions of India, China and Mexico. Aloe is probably one of the most commonly used herbs, as many people keep a plant on the kitchen windowsill for occasional topical use. In vitro studies have shown that aloe reduces the production of several chemical mediators that contribute to bodily discomfort, such as bradykinin, histamine, thromboxane B2 and prostaglandin F2 alpha. Aloe's soothing effects may also be due to its salicylate content. This succulent member of the lily family is considered to be safe and nontoxic. The most valuable part of the plant is the gel, rich in comforting polysaccharides, such as glucomannans, composed of the carbohydrate glucose and mannose. Our unique processing techniques separate the bitter, cathartic yellow latex of the aloe plant from the precious gel, preserving the polysaccharides and removing the undesirable anthraquinones, harsh purgatives found in the latex. Source Naturals is the first to combine aloe with the popular herb stevia. In addition to natual Ale Verite, Source Naturals offers Aloe Verite with Stevia and in three other naturally-flavored varieties: Aloe Verite apple, lemon-lime and raspberry. Whole Leaf - Aloe Verite is made from the whole leaf of the aloe plant, allowing for maximum gel extraction.

Not From Concentrate - Most aloe concentrates have been boiled, a process that destroys many of the long chain polysaccharides, known as mucopolysaccharides. ALOE VERITE is pure juice. It is processed in a manner that insures that all the heat sensitive nutrients of the aloe plant remain potent. The result is a truly exceptional aloe product. Safe - Potentially harmful compounds (aloin and emodin), found in the latex of the aloe vera leaf, have been removed. To protect the aloe from contamination, a minimal amount of preservative is added. Pure - The aloe used in Aloe Verite is carefully harvested by hand, then cleansed and filtered to maintain the active constituents. Organic - Aloe Verite is made from organically grown aloe vera leaves from the Aloe barbadensis plant. These plants have been certified as organically grown by the Texas Department of Agriculture. Suggested Use: 2-4 ounces daily between meals, or as recommended by your health care professional. Enjoy mixed with your favorite juice. One capful of Aloe Verite is equivalent to one fluid ounce. For both internal and external use. After opening, Aloe Verite will remain 4-5 weeks refrigerated, or 1-2 weeks unrefrigerated. Unopened, Aloe Verite will remain fresh until expiration date stamped on the bottom of bottle. Note: If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your health care professional before using this product. Do not use if either tamper-evident seal is broken or missing. What is Aloe Vera? The Aloe Vera plant consists of three main parts: the leaves, the sap and the gel. For best results, it is important that these elements interact, although the sap is considered to be the most active ingredient. Aloin, which is a powerful laxative and purgative, also present in Aloe Vera, has been removed from Aloe used in our Aloe Vera Health Drink as well as all Oleda products. Oleda Aloe Vera Is Greenhouse GrownWhat makes It Better Than Field Grown?

These plants are fed a multi-mineral mix that they literally suck up and store in their gel and sap. Harvested in a short duration of time to preserve the nutrients and avoid deterioration. Greenhouse allows harvesting year round. Repeatedly shown to contain 2 to 3 times more active components than field grown. A good source of calcium and magnesium as well as many other trace minerals. Grown in stress free environment. Protected from too cold/too dry environment year all year long. Manufacturer does not use herbicides, pesticides or animal waste.

Better Aloe Vera

No water added, no fiber or non-aloe additivejust the true whole leaf aloe. Processed with temperatures that do not destroy biological activity of the plant. Manufacturer uses wire screen filtration and centrifuge, not enzyme digestion to rid juice of fiber. No cold press or carbon filter. For the best Aloe Vera juice it takes approximately 10 pounds of aloe leaves to make 1 gallon of 100% Aloe Vera juice this is how our aloe juice is made. It is thought that Aloe may also aid in cell protection, cellular oxygenation, antioxidant, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and digestive aid.

What are the benefits of Aloe Vera?

It is thought to help keep the intestinal track (lining) cleaner. Contains uronic acids which is thought to help strip toxic materials of their harmful effects. Aloe Vera is a glyconutrient providing all of the 8 essential saccharides which are necessary for cell to cell communication: mannose, glucose, galactose, fucose, xylose. n-Acetylgalactosamine, n-Acetylgalactosamine and n-Acctylneuraminic acid. Contain anti microbials, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins, enzymes, amino acids. The plant produces the agents Lupeol, Salicylic acid, Urea Nitrogen, Cinnamonic acid, Phenols, and Sulphur, all of which are antiseptics that can control mold, bacteria, fungus, and viruses. Therefore, it can reduce or eliminate many internal and external infections. Aloe contains anti-inflammatory fatty acids: Cholesterol, Campesterol and Bsitosterol, which is why it is an effective treatment for burns, cuts and abrasions.

Who should take aloe? On the question of whether or not to take Aloe Vera on a daily basis, YES. I do! I have taken Aloe Vera every day for many, many yearseither the drink or the capsule.

Of course, if you have a specific illness you want to treat with the help of Aloe Vera, you should consult your doctor first with regard to the facts and expectations. Although the known benefits of Aloe Vera have not been completely embraced yet by the medical community, it is generally accepted that use of the plants properties, properly processed, can help internal maladies such as Allergies, Bronchitis, Nausea, and many other ailments as well as topical problems like Burns, Stings, Ulcerations, Cuts and Scrapes, etc. In addition it is said to have an overall healthy effect on the body from within and, when used in cosmetic creams and lotions it has the anti-aging properties of smoothing wrinkles and softening and nourishing the skin. We use this same aloe vera in our creams and lotions. According to many studies documented in Aloe Myth-Magic Medicine, by Odus Hennessee, Aloe Vera is a natural source of magnificent regenerative power and anti-aging properties. It also contains vitamins and minerals that are vital for general good health. Aloe vera What Is It?

A succulent perennial plant belonging to the lily family, aloe vera grows wild in Madagascar and large portions of the African continent. Because of its many therapeutic uses, it is now commercially cultivated in the United States, Japan, and countries in the Caribbean and Mediterranean. Many individuals also grow aloe as a houseplant. The aloe plant is best known for its healing aloe vera gel, a thin, clear, jellylike substance that can be squeezed or scraped from the inner part of the fleshy leaf. A soothing juice is also made from this gel. Another substance from the same plant, aloe vera latex, is taken from specialized cells along the inner leaf skin (called the pericyclic tubules). The latex is extracted as a liquid, then dried into a yellow powder. Because it's such a potent laxative, the latex is not usually used alone but combined with gentler herbs, such as cascara sagrada. Germany's Commission E approves of using small amounts of aloe vera latex to relieve constipation, but only for short-term use.

Health Benefits

For centuries, the gel of the aloe vera plant has been used as a soothing topical remedy for minor burns and wounds. It continues to be popular for treating sunburns and other firstdegree burns because it appears to speed healing. In addition, aloe vera gel is used to treat minor surface irritations, to reduce psoriasis symptoms, to lessen the painful effects of shingles, and to shrink warts. It even has a reputation as a beauty aid. Various research studies are underway to explore the potential of aloe vera components to boost immunity and combat the HIV virus, and to treat certain types of cancer (particularly leukemia). It may even have a role to play in managing diabetes. Specifically, aloe vera may help to: Speed healing of first-degree burns, including sunburns. The gel is excellent for easing first-degree burns (including sunburns) and certain minor second-degree burns. If applied after the burn has cooled, it will relieve pain and inflammation and accelerate healing. In one study of 27 people with moderately severe burns, those who used aloe vera healed in about 12 days on average, whereas the control group, who covered the affected areas with a regular gauze dressing, took 18 days to heal. Soothe and hasten healing of cuts, scrapes, and other minor wounds and skin irritations. The gel contains a number of active ingredients, including substances known to help relieve pain, reduce swelling, quell itching, and increase blood flow to an injured area. Some research even indicates that the gel has antifungal, antibacterial, and antiviral properties. Conversely, aloe vera gel may not help treat deeper, infected wounds, or those incurred during surgery. In one study at a Los Angeles hospital, 21 women were given either aloe vera gel or a placebo for wounds resulting from a caesarean section or surgery to the abdominal wall. When the gel was used, it took 83 days for the wounds to heal; when the placebo was applied, it took 53 days. (Both groups also received standard anti-infective treatments.) Lessen painful effects of shingles. Applied gently to the painful lesions that characterize this condition, aloe vera gel acts promptly to soothe these sores and provide relief from itching. It also works to decrease the chances that the blisters will become infected. Reduce symptoms of psoriasis. The ability of aloe vera gel to promote healing and quell itching and pain may offer some relief to those who suffer from this troubling condition. In a recent study of 60 people with chronic psoriasis, 83% of those who applied aloe to lesions three times a day for eight months experienced substantial improvement. Only 6% of those using a placebo benefited from its effects. Ease heartburn, ulcers, diverticular disorders, and other types of digestive upset. A juice made from the aloe gel acts as an anti-inflammatory and can be taken internally as a remedy for certain digestive complaints. European folk medicine calls for using aloe vera juice to relieve heartburn and ulcers. While there is very little substantive evidence to support these internal uses, preliminary research has shown promising results. In one Japanese study, 17 of 18 patients who took aloe vera juice found some relief for their peptic ulcers. However, none of the participants

was given a placebo, so comparisons of its effectiveness could not be made. Other clinical trials in Japan indicate that certain compounds in aloe vera reduce the secretion of stomach juices and the formation of lesions. Forms

Dosage Information
Special tips: --As a general rule, keep in mind that products that include "aloe vera extract" or "reconstituted aloe vera" may be much less potent than pure (more than 98%) aloe vera. Put another way, be sure to look at the label on any commercial aloe product to see if aloe vera is one of the first few ingredients listed. --For sunburn preparations, confirm that the product contains at least 20% aloe vera. --Aloe vera latex is available in capsule form, usually in combination with other (and more gentle) laxatives. For burns, cuts, scrapes, shingles, and other skin problems: Apply aloe gel to affected area two or three times a day. For sunburns, you can also add 1 or 2 cups of aloe vera juice to a tub of lukewarm water and soak. For heartburn: Drink 2 ounces of juice four times a day. For ulcers and diverticular disorders: Drink 1/2 cup of aloe vera juice twice a day for one month. If you are also taking psyllium for a diverticular disorder, allow at least two hours to elapse before having aloe vera juice. For warts: Dab a small amount of fresh or prepared aloe vera gel on a compress made of cotton gauze or flannel, and place over the wart. Change the dressing and apply new aloe vera daily. Improvement should be evident in three to four days. Be sure to check out our Dosage Recommendations Chart for Aloe Vera, which lists therapeutic dosages for specific ailments at a glance.

Guidelines for Use

The most effective and economical source of the gel is an aloe vera plant, which is easy to grow, even on a sunny city window sill. Cut off one of its plumper leaves and wash it off with soap and water. Then slit the leaf lengthwise, and squeeze out the clear gel from the center. Apply and gently spread the gel on to the painful area and let it dry; repeat the application as needed. Use common sense when treating a wound; before applying aloe vera gel, first clean the area thoroughly. When buying aloe vera juice, check to make sure that the one you select is derived from aloe vera gel, not from aloe latex. Also make sure the juice product contains a minimum of 98% aloe vera and that it does not have any aloin or aloe-emoin compounds, the key substances in aloe latex. Be sure to drink aloe vera juice between meals. When shopping for aloe vera juice, look for the "IASC-certified" seal; it is allowed only on products that contain certified raw ingredients that have been processed according to

standards set by the International Aloe Science Council, a voluntary certification organization. Creams and ointments should contain at least 20% aloe vera.

General Interaction

Be aware that the long-term use of any laxative, including aloe vera latex, can cause you to lose an excessive amount of the mineral potassium. The low blood levels of potassium can be further worsened if you are also taking a potassium-draining diuretic ("water-pill") like hydrochlorothiazide or furosemide. Dangerous heart rhythm abnormalities can develop if you take a digitalis heart medication (like digoxin or Lanoxin) along with a potassium-losing diuretic and the aloe vera latex. Consult your doctor for guidance. If you are on oral corticosteroids, such as beclomethasone, methylprednisolone, or prednisone, it is important not to overuse or misuse aloe vera juice. A potassium deficiency can develop, and you may experience toxic effects from the medication. If you are on the oral corticosteroid fludorocortisone (Florinef), it is important not to overuse or misuse aloe vera latex. A potassium deficiency can develop, and you may experience toxic effects from the medication. Note: For information on interactions with specific generic drugs, see our WholeHealthMD Drug/Nutrient Interactions Chart.

Possible Side Effects

As a topical treatment, aloe vera is quite safe. Occasionally, some people develop a mild allergic reaction marked by itching or a rash. If this occurs, discontinue use. Due to improper processing, aloe vera juice sometimes contains small quantities of the laxative compound in aloe latex. Should you begin to have cramps, diarrhea, or loose stools, do not ingest any more of the juice and replace it with a new supply. Cautions Don't take an aloe vera latex laxative if you are pregnant or breast-feeding; it may trigger uterine contractions. Also avoid using it during a menstrual period. Children and the elderly should not consume an aloe vera latex laxative internally. In addition, laxatives of any kind should never be used by anyone with an intestinal obstruction, an acutely inflammatory intestinal disease (such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis), appendicitis, or abdominal pain of unknown cause.

Aloe Vera and the Digestive System Aloe Vera has been recognised for centuries for its remarkable health-enhancing properties. Although known specifically for external application to the skin, Aloe Juice is now widely used to help a variety of conditions of the digestive tract. It is important at this stage to stress that, as with any medical condition, a pain in the abdomen should be referred to a medical practitioner in the first instance. Research work carried out over many years points conclusively to a toxic colon being the cause of a very wide range of illnesses, from minor to very serious. It is widely recognised that problems of the bowel are on the increase with many millions of people suffering a range of conditions including colitis, diverticulitis, Crohns disease and spastic colon this latter condition more commonly known as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

IBS is considered to be the most common of these disorders and symptoms are varied, including exhaustion, lower back pain, constipation, diarrhoea and indigestion. The condition can be most distressing and can continually recur in spite of orthodox treatment. The digestive tract is designed to ensure nutrients from food are absorbed into the blood stream whilst dispensing with the unwanted waste. Bacteria plays a major role in achieving the breakdown of food matter but, in doing so, also produces toxins. This is perfectly normal and in a healthy system the level of toxins is controlled. Nowadays our diet includes many unwanted substances including various chemicals, fats, insecticides etc. which can result in a high level of toxins, some of which can be poisonous. If these are absorbed into the blood the effect can give rise to a variety of conditions including lethargy and even food poisoning. The bowel can gradually fur up with a lining of unabsorbed food residues. These deposits become impacted and prevent essential nutrients from our diet being absorbed. This situation gives rise to nutrient deficiency which in turn can cause lethargy and exhaustion whilst the affected colon can be the cause of lower abdominal pain, diarrhoea or constipation. Colonic irrigation is a technique which loosens and washes out these residues. Some practitioners are finding that Aloe Vera Juice, if taken daily for a period of several weeks, helps to ensure that the irrigation process is greatly facilitated. However, it is more usual to find that a regular, daily course of Aloe Vera Juice is sufficient to gently and gradually break down, loosen and assist in the natural dispersal of these residues. Detoxification also takes place and the results are often most gratifying with reports of ability to enjoy a wider range of foods, relief from pain, reducing or dispensing with prescribed bulking agents or antispasmodic drugs and also a greater feeling of well-being and an improvement in the quality of life. In establishing a regime of a regular daily dose of Aloe Vera Juice it may not only be found that the effects are gradual, gentle and with no irritant or harmful side effects, but also blood condition will be improved due to Aloe Veras ability to detoxify. Also, being a natural healer, any internal ulcers or lesions will be soothed and healing will be enhanced.

Aloe Vera and Irritable Bowel Syndrome

It is claimed by a research team at a major British hospital that as many as 12 million people in Britain suffer from IBS. Estimates also reveal that up to one third of the population will experience the symptoms of IBS at some time in their lives. The Symptoms Many people, including some members of the medical profession, find it difficult to recognise the symptoms of IBS which manifest themselves in many ways. The following list includes the majority of the signs and symptoms of IBS. Individuals can experience one or several of these over a period of time:1. Swollen abdomen, irrespective of time of day. 2. Stomach pains, usually low down, often recurring. 3. Constipation accompanied invariably with griping pains in the lower abdomen. 4. Diarrhoea which can also be accompanied by pains. Alternating diarrhoea and constipation. 5. Flatulence and belching often associated with a disturbed, rumbling gut. 6. Passing mucus and hard, pellet-like stools. 7. A diminished appetite, particularly when experiencing a distended abdomen. 8. General depressed feeling and continual lethargy.

9. Heartburn. 10. Unpleasant tastes in mouth. Possible Causes Having considered the symptoms, the next stage is to determine the possible causes. It is extremely difficult to be specific but one of the underlying causes is considered to be stress. Stress manifests itself in many ways often not apparent to the sufferer. Stress can set up a tension within the individual, resulting in anxiety. This situation can create a spasm in the intestinal tract. At this stage it is importart to understand how the food we eat is moved through the intestine. A totally automatic regular muscular contraction of the walls of the colon (peristalsis), forces the material to move through. If an external influence (i.e. stress) causes the natural rhythm of peristalsis to be interrupted, this can result in painful, irregular contractions in the intestine which can continue for a very long time. Other possible causes are thought to include a change of diet, food poisoning or gastroenteritis and the well known situation of insufficient fibre in the diet. However, there is also conflicting professional advice that too much fibre can also be linked to IBS. Treatment Medical practitioners who recognise IBS may suggest a variety of treatments including stress management and relaxation, diet changes and prescribe antispasmodics of which there are several available over the counter. But it is important to be mindful of mis-diagnosis. Bloating after meals and a continual feeling of lethargy, particularly if suffering from fungal infections like thrush, can indicate that candida albicans is more likely to be a problem. Aloe Vera Juice The Natural Choice Notwithstanding this bewildering variety of differing approaches to the treatment of IBS, there is a big emphasis on natural and homoeopathic remedies. Aloe Vera Juice has many benefits to the human body. An analysis of the Aloe Vera plant shows it is made up from a large variety of amino acids, enzymes, vitamins and minerals and it comes closer than any other known plant to the duplication of lifes essential substances in the biochemistry of the human body. Aloe Vera has natural healing and detoxifying powers and works gently within the intestinal tract to help break down impacted food residues and thoroughly cleanse the bowel. It can help ease constipation and prevent continuing diarrhoea, setting a regularity to the bowel. All this helps to reduce discomfort and bloating. Naturally, as these symptoms are eased, so the stress associated with the discomfort is also reduced. Of course, the individual must have a due regard for the diet but if this can be normalised, the regular consumption of a dose of Aloe Vera Juice can often improve and maintain the feeling of well-being and the quality of life. The many unsolicited testimonials and letters of grateful thanks received show that Aloe Juice can be of help when all else has failed. Nevertheless, it must be stressed that professional medical advice should always be sought at the earliest possible stage for abdominal problems and pains.

Aloe Vera and Arthritis

Aloe Vera is a stimulant to the immune system, a powerful anti- inflammatory, an analgesic and is able to speed up cell growth. Aloe Vera contains a large number of mucopolysaccharides (basic sugars) which are found in every cell in the body. Aloe also

contains large numbers of nutrients including vitamins E, C, B1, 2, 3, and 6 as well as iron, manganese, calcium and zinc. Seven essential amino acids and fatty acids are also found in Aloe Vera. Rheumatoid arthritis is a painful, debilitating condition. It manifests itself as stiff, swollen joints with varying degrees of associated pain caused partly due to nerve damage and partly by the pressure of the swollen area. The swollen area is normally red in colour and described as inflamed. The redness is caused by the blood supply to the damaged area being increased. Conventional treatment includes use of anti-inflammatory drugs and steroids, typically cortisone injections or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. These certainly can ease the painful effects but unfortunately do not repair damaged tissues. There can also be undesirable side effects, particularly thinning of the skin and osteoporosis. Although many NSAIDs are available, each one has the potential to cause stomach ulcers. Repairing damaged tissue by regenerating cells is a function at which Aloe Vera has been shown to be most successful. It not only relieves the painful symptoms but also helps to disperse damaged tissue a type of detoxification process. Aloe Vera may be taken both internally as a juice or as a gel applied to the painful joint. Here Aloe Veras deep penetration may show benefit. The degree of success with this treatment varies considerably from person to person. With some, relief and improved joint flexibility is virtually immediate an apparent magical cure, whereas in others, the process can take much longer and the degree of recovery may not be so great. In any event, an important fact must be remembered: Aloe Vera has no known adverse side effects. It is an extract from the leaf of the Aloe Vera plant, known throughout the world where it grows naturally as the First Aid Plant, the Burn Plant, the Miracle Plant and the Medicine Plant. ______________________________________________________________________ ALOE VERA (ALO BARBADENSIS, AL0 VERA) Aloe is a plant that resembles a cactus. It has long, thick triangular leaves, and has yelloworange flowers. There are over 500 species of Aloe found around the world Aloe contains calcium, iron, lecithin, manganese, potassium, sodium and zinc. Aloe also contains substances, which promote the healing of new skin, and exfoliation of dead skin. Aloe acts like a chelating agent, which causes the removal of poisonous heavy metals from the body. It is recommended that for herbal ingestion of Aloetha, that it be taken in late evenings. To use it externally, it can be used at any time. Aloe has a substance called anthraquinone glycosides in its juice. Bacteria in the intestines use these glycosides to create other compounds that cause laxative actions in the intestines. HISTORY: The Aloe plant is thought to originally come from Africa, but has been spread all over the world by man due to its great healing properties. It was used in India to treat intestinal infections. The root of the Aloe plant is used to help treat people with colic problems. USE EXTERNALLY: Use Aloe gel from the inside of the leaves on acne, abscesses, burns, chicken pox, cuts, insect bites, irritated skin and sunburns. It has also been shown to help heal X-ray burns, and to prevent internal scarring after surgery.

USE INTERNALLY: Aloe can be used as a gel capsules, juice or in tablet form to help constipation, diabetes caused ulcers, gastritis, hyperacidity, stomach inflammation and ulcers. It is also thought to help maintain the health of the pancreas, and help heal Cobalt Radiation damage. This kind of damage occurs in people undergoing radiation therapy for some cancers. Aloe is not recommend if youre pregnant, or have any gastrointestinal conditions. Also, do not take Aloe Capsules for more than 10 days straight. The latex of the Aloe leaf is used as a laxative ingredient, and can cause the body to become addicted to its laxative action.

Aloe vera: Nature's best kept secret

by Dr. Caroline Shreeve Aloe vera is a plant of many surprises. It looks like a cactus, grows in dry surroundings, but belongs to the lily family. It stays moist and cool where other plants wilt, shutting down its pores to prevent water loss. When cut or damaged, its healing powers come to light, forming a protective covering, to ensure that the plant continues to thrive. It grows naturally in Africa, America, Europe and Asia where there are over 200 varieties of the plant, but it is the Aloe barbadensis (Aloe vera) variety which has the best medicinal properties. Aloe vera history and legend Most importantly, Aloe vera has a long history as a safe, effective medicine and skin care aid. For over 6,000 years, people have benefited from the remarkable relief that the plant can bring to a wide range of ailments. The ancient Egyptians used Aloe to heal battle wounds and cure infections. Writings of the early Greeks show how they valued it for relieving blisters, burns and leg ulcers as well as bowel and stomach disorders. Legend has it that Aristotle persuaded Alexander the Great to conquer the Isle of Socroto, to secure enough Aloe vera to heal his soldiers wounds. Cleopatra relied on it for her unlined, youthful complexion, whilst the Chinese hailed Aloe as an elixir of youth. Aloe is also listed in St. Johns gospel as an anointing ingredient for the body of Christ. Aloe vera rediscovered

Doctors rediscovered Aloe vera in the 1930s, when it was found to heal radiation burns due to X-rays, where other methods had met with little success. It did the same for atomic fallout victims a decade later, following the Nagasaki and Hiroshima bombings.

The plants clear, glassy leaf sap is used today to relieve ailments from insect bites, stings and sunburn to peptic ulcers, diarrhoea and stiff, painful joints.

Aloe veras healing actions Traditional remedies are often founded on firm scientific fact. Studies have confirmed Aloe vera as a rich source of healing ingredients which work synergistically, enhancing one anothers effects. These ingredients include vitamins, minerals, proteins, enzymes and amino acids. Aloe vera extract acts in three main ways: * as an anti-inflammatory agent * a wound healer * an antioxidant one or all of which may contribute to relieving a particular ailment. Aloe vera is anti-inflammatory Inflammation is our bodys natural way of responding to infection, toxins or injury. It is characterised by redness, swelling and heat caused by an increase of blood to the damaged area. Sometimes, however, inflammation can backfire or get out of hand. Arthritis is a debilitating and painful condition which can be caused by antibodies produced against the bodys own tissues, resulting in sore, inflamed joints and loss of movement. Steroids (e.g. hydrocortisone) suppress inflammation but can cause weight gain, brittle bones and thin, weak skin. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g. aspirin and ibuprofen) ease swollen joints and improve mobility but may trigger stomach upsets or peptic ulcers. Plant steroids in Aloe vera can relieve inflammation, help to regenerate new cells and disperse damaged tissue with no side-effects. Besides arthritis and rheumatism, these natural plant steroids also work well for sunburn, insect bites and stings, rashes, mouth ulcers, inflamed stomach and bowel disorders. Three other common conditions which benefit from Aloe veras anti-inflammatory action are heartburn, peptic ulcers and piles. Heartburn happens when the foodpipe or gullet gets inflamed by stomach acid. Peptic ulcers erode the lining of the stomach or small bowel (duodenum), causing inflammation and pain. Piles, which are inflamed varicose veins at the exit of the bowel or anus, can also smart, sting and bleed. Aloe vera as a wound healer Soapy substances in Aloe vera gel (saponins) cleanse wounds of dirt and debris, treat oilclogged pores and help kill any microbes present. The woody, pulpy microfibres in Aloe

veras sap (lignins) soften hard skin and gently penetrate the tissues. Other active ingredients and oxygen can then reach down into the depths of the wound. The anthraquinones in Aloe vera loosen debris, pus and dead cells, bring blood to the area and flush out matter from wounds and ulcers. They also kill bacteria, some viruses and fungi. A biological growth stimulator present in Aloe vera helps to regenerate new tissue, guard against sepsis and promote the healing in cuts and wounds. Studies have shown that the growth stimulator attaches itself to tissue cells called fibroblasts. These produce long thin strings of collagen and elastin, adding strength and bringing the edges of the wound together. Typical ailments to benefit from these actions include mouth and peptic ulcers, and the large ulcer craters often found on the legs of elderly people with diabetes or poor circulation. The antiseptic actions of saponins and anthraquinones also help peptic ulcers (now known to be partly due to bacteria); and acne in which infection with skin bacteria plays an important part. One of Aloe veras most popular uses is in the treatment of minor burns which benefit from new skin regeneration without unsightly scarring. Eczema and psoriasis also benefit from the ability of lignins to penetrate the toughened skin surface. Aloe vera as an antioxidant Antioxidants are essential for a healthy metabolism and to protect against free radicals. These form when a molecule loses an electron as a result of the normal metabolism which occurs as food and oxygen are turned into energy. Large numbers of these highly-charged molecular fragments can weaken the immune system which fights infection and resists degenerative changes. Triggers include growing older, viral infections, high intakes of animal fat and or alcohol, stress, smoking, pollution and other toxins. Effects include ageing, wrinkled skin and an increased risk of arthritis, cancer and infections. Aloe vera contains naturally occurring antioxidants in the form of vitamins B complex, C and E, plus beta-carotene which is converted by the body into vitamin A. Dietary nutrients in Aloe vera also include potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, manganese, chromium and sodium and all are essential for maintaining a healthy metabolism. Aloe vera the choice The extract from the leaves of the Aloe vera plant can be found in many health and beauty products. Aloe vera juice can be produced from either liquid or powdered Aloe, but it is only recommended and advisable to buy juice made from the liquid extract. Also ensure the Aloe content is a minimum of 95% by volume. This is not to be confused with the purity of Aloe vera which is often shown as 100%. A flavoured juice is considered by many to be more palatable but natural juices are more suitable for those with fruit allergies or who suffer from candida. A regular small dose is recommended and the effectiveness can vary, some experiencing benefits immediately, whereas others can take several weeks.

Aloe vera gel is primarily used externally for skin conditions such as acne, sunburn, psoriasis, cuts, bruises and stings. The pure gel is clear, non-sticky, odourless, easily absorbed and can be used as often as required. Medical Advice Consult your doctor for disorders that do not improve or which you suspect might be serious.
