Salient features of the Certificate Course in Immunization practices (CCIP)

Background and Rationale In India it is estimated that while the private sector provides more than three-fourths of all curative health care services, its contribution to maternal and child health preventive and promotive services are less than one-third. It is important that they are given ready access to updated evidence based protocols for providing health services. There is a need for the involvement of private practitioner in national health programmes. However, this needs to be preceded with appropriate training inputs to improve their knowledge and skills for delivering quality services. Course Title: Certificate Course in Immunization Practices (CCIP) Objective: Certificate Course in Immunization Practices is designed to enhance knowledge, skills and core competencies of primary care physicians from urban and peri-urban areas of India on Immunization to undertake evidence based quality vaccination. Course is envisioned to be a unique model to improve the immunization coverage in urban areas and strengthen the immunization program in India contributing to the achievement of MDG- 4. About the course: It will comprise of 5 modules, with once a month 4 contact sessions (in 4 months), preferably on Sundays. Total 3 cycles of training batches are planned in a phased manner. This course will focus on various available vaccines in India as recommended by GoI and IAP for protection of children, adolescents and adults from vaccine preventable diseases and conditions. This course will also have a major thrust on safe vaccination and effective cold chain and vaccine storage practices to enable the primary care physicians to have an overall understanding of the whole spectrum of VPDs, conditions and Immunization.

 These course modules will be developed with technical support and guidance from Child Health Foundation (CHF) headed by Dr. T Jacob John who is a renowned Pediatrician and Vaccinologist of International repute. A panel of 15 National Experts (comprising of eminent pediatricians and community medicine experts) in the field of Immunization will finalize the course curriculum. There will be a judicious mix of case-studies, group discussion, demonstration and direct teaching with great flexibility to accommodate participant's requirements. Complete and comprehensive learning package including print and CD modules will be provided to the trainees and the faculty. The course will be launched in 25 centres across 14 states in India. Each centre will have 20-25 trainees who will be trained by two regional faculties. Total 625 physicians will be trained in the pilot phase. In the subsequent cycle, it is proposed that the number of centres and participants will be increased to 2500 participants to be trained in 100 centres across India. There will be 50 dedicated, competent & formally trained regional faculty, who will facilitate the course in identified centers across country. There will be two faculty at each centre, one from Pediatrics & one from Community Medicine to facilitate these trainings. The course will have an inbuilt monitoring and evaluation system for maintaining training quality excellence through the engagement of independent monitors (who will be experienced public Health professionals from across India) for the program. The trainees after completing the training program successfully shall be awarded certification, jointly issued by PHFI and the respective Regional Faculty. Course will be rolled out by PHFI through the support from Regional Faculty. This course is cobranded by UNICEF and CHF. Criteria for selection of 15 National Experts: 1. 2. 3. 4. Their roles and responsibilities will be to; a. Participate in review and finalization of the course curriculum and course delivery methods; b. Participate and conduct training of regional faculty (ToT); c. Conduct some technical sessions at the designated centres where ever if feasible. Criteria for selection of Regional Faculty (Pediatrician & Community Medicine expert): 1. MD in Pediatrics / equivalent degree and; 2. Experience at least 8 to 10 years of experience in practice in Pediatrics and; 3. Also experience of teaching / training of public health programs/immunization And 1. MD in PSM / Community Medicine / and or equivalent degree and; 2. Experience at least 8 to 10 years of experience in practice in community medicine/public health and; 3. Also experience of teaching / training of public health programs/immunization Their roles and responsibilities will be to; a. Participate in the orientation workshop and review meetings conducted by the PHFI and partners; b. Ensure smooth and good quality conduct of 4, monthly contact sessions on Sundays at their training site as per PHFI guidelines and standards; c. Conduct periodic learning and performance appraisals of the participating primary care physicians; d. Maintain all the relevant records and submit periodic academic and financial reports to PHFI staff present during sessions; e. Facilitate the monitoring and evaluation activities conducted by PHFI. f. Support in identifying the participants for the course.
