The escalating Internet data traffic has stimulated an unprecedented growth in the communication data center infrastructure. Higher bandwidth networking protocols such as Ethernet and InfiniBand are evolving rapidly to support data rates of 40/100 Gb/s and 120 Gb/s respectively. Significant changes in storage area networking (SAN) and high performance computing (HPC) are transforming the cabling technology requirements for data centers and computer rooms. The cabling interconnect technology, materials and construction, plays an increasingly larger role in the achievable interconnect distances and cable management aspects for these high speed-high density data centers, computer rooms, and equipment rooms. Network designers are struggling with critical path design choices. LEONIs EDS makes the right design choices possible.
LEONI high speed parallel pair cables with LEONIs especially formulated dielectric enables a smaller cable diameter; reducing cable density and improving air flow and heat dissipation within servers and storage enclosures. LEONIZELL dielectrics offer significantly lower loss and reduced time delay skew and amplitude skew over alternative materials. Due to their combined mechanical and electrical performance, high speed cables from LEONI are also deployed in mobile networks serving as high speed interconnections between racks inside base stations. LEONIs ParaLink cable product line is designed and offered to optimise the bandwidth cost ratio for a variety of high speed copper applications. ParaLink has established the benchmark for size, performance, and cost over current data center product offerings. Due to its almost unique value added chain, LEONI is able to offer fiber optic and data cables for EDS next to the Telecom business units ParaLink solutions. Fast Cables. Quick Solutions.

Dielectric Technologies LEONIZELL unique gas injection skin-foam-skin dielectric technology has been specifically developed for the ParaLink high speed differential pair product line. The LEONIZELL structure offers a very rugged and stable mechanical structure with the following advantages and benefits compared to legacy industry structures: Maximum adhesion to the inner conductor limits pistoning effects with cable flexure minimises shrink back effects of the dielectric during termination (soldering / welding) eliminates air voids close to the center conductor prevents instable electrical performance Resilience to mechanical deformations minimises performance degradation during and after installation eliminates insertion loss suck-outs caused by bending and flexure ensures predictable performance even after severe abuse Colour coding enables an easy termination enables orientation of the conductors within the pair elimination of performance degradation due to pigmentation within dielectric technologies
Cabling Technologies The unique cabling technology used in the ParaLink manufacturing process offers significant space savings and a reduction of the outer cable diameter, in most cases up to 15 % and even as much as 20 % compared to conventional cabling technologies. The ParaLink unilay cable lay-up prevents mechanical deformation of the differential pair at the same time as reducing the effect of compression on differential pairs. Therefore it minimises negative influences on the transmission line and improves the transmission lines signal integrity. reduces the cables outer diameter (i.e. 4XAWG26 diameter is equal to that of many competitors 4XAWG28). simplifies routing and cable management. enables smaller and tighter bending radii. increases cable densities. reduces weight. reduces pistoning effects.

Mode Conversion
Influence of mode conversion on the insertion loss Mode Conversion IL with Mode Conversion IL ideal

max.
The variation of insertion loss (ILV) measures the differences of insertion loss between channels or pairs. Certain factor, for example return loss, mode conversion, impedance, dimensions of cable, insulation materials have an influence on the pair insertion loss (IL). If the IL between all pairs of a cable varies in a small range (typ. less than 5 % with ParaLink) the quality of the cable is high and the channel performance is predictable.
Mode Conversion (SCDxy) describes the relationship between transmitted differential mode signal energy at one end of the cable to the received common mode energy at the other end. It is measured in the frequency domain. The effect of mode conversion (MC) is additional insertion loss and it occurs mostly due to asymmetry between both signal wires of a pair. In time domain this effect is well known as intra pair skew, a time delay between both signal parts at 50 % of the signal step. Measuring the mode conversion of a cable has the advantage against skew measurements, that the losses of the differential signal for different data rates (= different frequency bandwidths) will be visible. Examples for Mode Conversion: Ideal cable: A symmetric differential signal is transmitted into a cable without loss. Tx+(t) = Tx-(t) At the receiving end the differential mode signal has twice the height of the signal parts Tx+ and Tx-. In this case a common mode signal does not exist.

If the cable is almost absolutely symmetric, both transmitted signal parts arrive simultaneously with the same (opposite) amplitude attenuated at the receiving end of the cable. Because Rx+(t) signal is close to Rx-(t) signal, the common mode signal is still very low.
Due to different lengths of the wires within the shielded pair, the positive signal part of the differential signal arrives at the receiving end of the cable at a different time compared to the negative part. The Rx+(t) signal is not equal to -Rx-(t) any more. A common mode signal arises. At the same time the differential mode signal energy decreases.

The measuring laboratory of the LEONI Business Unit Telecom is intended to function as a research and development lab. It will also provide quality assurance for manufacturing high-speed cables for high-bandwidth/frequency applications. A fully air-conditioned, antistatic environment and proper measurement fixture methods have been created and developed to ensure the accuracy, calibration and repeatability of testing activities. The test lab is equipped with state-of-the-art network analyzers from Agilent Technologies, enabling tests for differential transmission lines in frequencies up to 50 GHz. Two 4 port network analyzers (4x 50 Ohm or 2x 100 Ohm) equipped with the newest PLTS (Physical Layer Test System) software avoid the need for transformers, thus providing accurate measurements of the transmission line. Traditional measuring transformers must be used with an impedance matching the impedance for the transmission line, usually about 100 Ohm for InfiniBand and 150 Ohm for Fibre Channel applications. They are limited in the measurement of high frequencies and cannot measure mode conversion. This makes it virtually impossible to take accurate measurements in the bandwidth of interest for the highperformance transmission line applications mentioned above. The lab is also equipped with two Tektronix TDA for time domain measurements, such as time delay, skew, impedance and distance to fault, which can also be determined in the frequency domain using network analyzers. However, using network analyzers requires significant margins of error in mathematical transformations from frequency to time domain. The LEONI signal integrity development laboratory has extensive proprietary software at disposal to model, simulate and emulate all performance aspects of the signal integrity of a given differential transmission line, including SPICE and eField models. That, combinded with 12,5 GB/s Advantest pulse pattern generators, provides LEONI with a solid engineering base to aid and accelerate customer development programs.
