Mayor's Sunday Service and
Dedication of the War Memorial
The Mayor's Sunday Service and
Dedication of the War Memorial
will take place on Sunday 14th
July 2013. The Service will be
held at St. Francis of Assisi CofE
Church, Barwick Way, Ingleby
Barwick commencing at 10 a.m.
Following the Service a dedication
ceremony will take place at 11
a.m. at the War Memorial which
is sited adjacent to the main
entrance into Romano Park. All
are welcome to attend.
Multi Use Games Area (MUGA)
Adjacent to Romano Park,
Ingleby Barwick - Provision of
Lighting.
Provision of lighting at the MUGA
is currently being pursued. The
scheme is being jointly funded by
the Town Council and Ingleby
Barwick Ward Councillors.
Planning approval is required for
the scheme and during this
process residents living in the
nearby vicinity will be consulted.
It is noted that a timing device will
be required which will enable the
lights to be switched off at a pre-
determined time.

Buying a new kitchen can be a stressful

Just because this article is about
Vintage Weddings, doesnt mean
that our gentlemen readers have
to hurriedly turn the page.
It takes two to make a wedding,- (
well sometimes it takes hundreds,
it depends how many friends and
family you have!)Though the
groom is seen as having a
supporting role, it is up to him to
make the bride look good, but it is
his day too.
In the last few years Vintage
weddings have become big
business, - there are books, blogs,
fairs and websites dedicated to
giving you style ideas from your
chosen period
Planning is everything, especially
if you are doing it yourself, -
finding vintage items for
decoration, and need large
quantities. Champagne glasses,
decorative bone china, vintage
tablecloths, and place settings, all
take time to collect, if you are not
hiring them. Hunting down the
right frock, bridesmaid dresses,
stationery etc , needs patience,
and time sourcing from the
Internet, auctions, charity shops
and vintage shops..
The starting point, is deciding on a
theme, pick a period or style that
you feel most comfortable with, if
you are going the whole hog, or
just use accent pieces to Vintage
Up your day. Make sure that the
guests know what is expected of
them too, if the wedding is in
period, so that everyone can join
in the fun. Who doesnt love
dressing up? A wedding is a great
excuse.
Nothing can be too elaborate,
weird, or wacky! It is a special
event that will be remembered by
everyone attending forever, and
with the advent of mobile phones,
and social media, it can be shared
worldwide instantly.
Very often the venue for the
reception is a good starting point
in deciding which theme will
work, and whether the owners
will accommodate your wishes.
Church halls, marquees, pub and
hotel reception rooms, can all be
imaginatively decorated with the
minimum of fuss, and maximum
of ingenuity, if approached in the
right way, to give them a more
personal feel.

magazines etc, help to decide
what areas to focus on with regard
to the chosen period, - see how
other couples have approached
the Herculean task, steal ideas
and improvise!
Ice cream vans on village greens,
fairground rides, old fashioned
pub games and amusements are
just some of the possibilities that
are available to hire and add a
certain twist to what is a solemn
occasion.
The 1950s, seems to have been a
very popular choice for styling
with younger couples, as it has an
air of fun, and there are still plenty
of original items freely available at
little cost. Wedding dresses were
stylish from this decade, very
flattering., and affordable. Sparkly
jewellery, and accessories, are
easy to find.Vintage floral bone
china tea sets can be miss
matched, for place settings, used
to put candles in, have jellies set
in them etc.. vintage teapots can
be filled with winewhicker
baskets full of flowers for table
centrepiecesyou are only
limited by your imagination!
It all takes planning, if you are not

part of the fun, and makes it a

Our apprentices at Chester-le-Track
are given a training day which
involves a visit to Manchester and
Liverpool.
On these trips, we go beyond
Liverpool under the Mersey to the
Wirral and have a visit to one of my
favourite places, Port Sunlight. It is a
model village, built by Lever Brothers
to accommodate workers in its soap
factory (nowpart of Unilever). Work
commenced in 1888, and the name
is derived fromLever Brothers most
popular brand of cleaning agent,
Sunlight. The village contains 900
Grade II listed buildings and is a
conservation area. Back in April the
three apprentices, two Pauls and
Tony visited the Bridge Inn at the
centre of the village for their evening
meal with me (Tony took the photo).
WilliamLever was a great
philanthropic entrepreneur who
claimed that Port Sunlight was an
exercise in profit sharing, but rather
than share profits directly, he invested
themin the village. He said, It
would not do you much good if you
send it down your throats in the form
of bottles of whisky, bags of sweets,
or fat geese at Christmas. On the
other hand, if you leave the money
with me, I shall use it to provide for
you everything that makes life
pleasant nice houses, comfortable
homes, and healthy recreation.
WilliamLever personally supervised
planning the village, built on a
greenfield site as the factory
relocated fromWarrington and
employed nearly thirty different
architects. Between 1899 and 1914,
800 houses were built to house a
population of 3,500. The garden
village had allotments and public
buildings including the Lady Lever
Art Gallery, a cottage hospital,
schools, a concert hall, open air
swimming pool, church, and a
temperance hotel, which later
became the licensed Bridge Inn.
Lever introduced welfare schemes,
and provided for the education and
entertainment of his workforce,
encouraging recreation and
organisations which promoted art,

The historical significance
of Port Sunlight lies in its
combination of model
industrial housing,
providing materially
decent conditions for
working people, with the
architectural and
landscape values of the
garden suburb, and of
course there was a railway
station too. Many garden
suburbs and villages have
railway stations at their
heart including Letchworth
in Hertfordshire and
Welwyn Garden City. Each
block of houses was
designed by a different
architect. The backs of any
of the houses cannot be
seen, and each house is
unique. In terms of
architectural features, there
is half-timbering, carved
woodwork and masonry,
pargetting (ornamental
plaster work) moulded and
twisted chimneys and
leaded glazed patterns.
Some houses were built in
Flemish style, with bricks
imported fromBelgium.
There is a nice tea shop
opposite the station with a
viewdown the pleasant
street to the factory, as the
second picture shows.
Chester-le-Track sells rail
tickets over the phone,
printing themat its offices
at Chester-le-Street (0191
387 1387) and Eaglescliffe
(01642 200140) stations.
Of course we also sell to
personal callers and over
the internet. Three lucky
pairs of customers will be
selected for a free trip to
Port Sunlight, via
Liverpool.

July and August with the
winners being selected a
fewdays after the month
ends. The prize will
include free travel fromthe
winners local station to
Liverpool Lime Street and
transfer to Port Sunlight
station, fromwhere it is a
pleasant walk through the
village to the Bridge Inn.
Until the 1980s, all
residents of Port Sunlight
were employees of
Unilever and their families.
During this decade the
houses were first sold
privately. If you go, youll
also have time to visit
Liverpool with its array of
museums and shops, and,
of course, the Beatles
connection. Not that Port
Sunlight is without its own
Beatles story: Hulme Hall,
Port Sunlight, was the
venue for drummer Ringo
Starrs official debut as a
member of The Beatles on
18 August 1962.
It is also the site of the
bands first ever broadcast
interview. The interview
was with local disc jockey
Monty Lister and recorded
for Radio Clatterbridge on
27 October 1962.
