UsingdetailedComputerAidedEngineeringprograms,Jaguarachievedlateralstiffnessgainsof upto30percentinkeyareas,suchasthefrontsuspensionmountingpoints,comparedtoother Jaguarmodels.Thisrigidityprovidesaprecisionfoundationforafinelytunedsuspensionsystem todeliverasuperbdriverconnectivityandfidelityofresponse.

Significantly,thebeautifulclamshellhood,anexoticsignaturefeatureoftheFTYPEandwhere thefrontheartlinebegins,isaonepiecestamping,madeusinga1,000tonpress. AluminiumformsagreatpartofthecommitmentJaguarhasmadetosustainability.Morethan halfthecontentofthecarcomesfromrecycledorreclaimedmetal.Inaddition,Jaguar 4 isrollingoutitsclosedlooprecyclingsystemtoitssuppliers,ensuringallwastemetalfromthe manufacturingprocessisreused. The380PSV6FTYPEScoversthe0100km/hsprintin4.9secondsandhasanelectronically limitedtopspeedof275km/hwhilstproducing380PSand460Nmoftorque. ThesuperchargedV6andV8enginescombinehighcompression,directfuelinjection,dual independentvariablecamtiming(DIVCT)andasuperchargertodelivertheirhighlevelsof performanceandefficiency. InboththeV6andV8,thealuminiumcylinderheadspackageaninnovativevalvecontrolsystem. Thedualindependentvariablecamtiming(DIVCT)systemisactivatedbythepositiveand negativetorquesgeneratedbythemovementoftheintakeandexhaustvalves,allowing exceptionallyquickactuationratesofmorethan150degreespersecondthroughouttherev range. Sprayguideddirectinjectiondeliverspreciselymeasuredquantitiesoffueldirectlyintothecentre ofthecombustionchambersatpressuresofupto150bar(2175psi),creatingamore homogenousairfuelmixtureforcleanerandmoreefficientcombustion.Thisisaidedbyspark plugsthatarepreciselyindexedbothinrelationtotheinjectorandwithinthecombustion chamber. 5

IntelligentStop/Start ThenewIntelligentStop/Startsystemoffersfueleconomybenefitsundercertainurbandriving conditions.Stop/Startusesatwinsolenoidstarter,enablingthesystemtorestarttheengine quicklyasthedriversfoottomovefromthebrakepedaltotheaccelerator.Thereisalsoa strategyforenginestopstartchangeofmindscenarios.Thiswillbringtheenginebackupto speedevenduringitsrundownphaseif,forinstance,thecariscomingtoahaltatan intersectionwhenthedriverseesanopportunitytojointhetrafficflow.Astheengineisshutting down,butbeforeithascompletelystopped,itcanrapidlyrestartbyinjectingfuelintothe cylinders. ActiveExhaust StandardontheV6SandV8Smodels,anActiveExhaustsystemenhancestheexhaustnote. Electronicallycontrolledbypassvalvesintherearsectionoftheexhaustopenunderhard acceleration,effectivelyprovidingafreeflowingstraightthrougharrangement.Atcruising speeds,thevalveswillclose,retainingapowerfulexhaustnotewithcomfortablesoundlevels. EightspeedQuickshiftAutomaticTransmission WitheightcloselyspacedratiosintheQuickshiftautomatictransmission,theFTYPEdrivercan selectagearwhichwillkeeptheenginewithinitsoptimalpowerband.Thetransmissionwas specificallytunedbyJaguarfortheFtypetoprioritizeacceleration. TheentiredrivetrainoftheFTYPEuptoandincludingtirecontactpatchesistunedfor optimalresponsetoallowforultrafasttransienttorquedelivery,whichprovidesthedriverwitha highdegreeofresponsivefeedback.Importantly,oncethetransmissionhasshiftedintosecond gear,alockingclutchbypassesthetorqueconvertor,creatingadirectmechanicallinkbetween theengineandtherearwheels.TheQuickshiftsystemenhancesthesenseofconnectivityby ensuringsharp,immediateshiftingperformanceviarapidandpreciselytimedenginetorque intervention. Theoperatingparametersofthetransmissionaredeterminedbytheadaptiveshiftstrategythat has25differentprogramsavailabletoit,dependingondrivingstyleandroadconditions.The transmissioncandetectthemannerinwhichthecarisbeingdrivenbymonitoringacceleration andbraking,corneringforces,throttleandbrakepedalactivity,roadload,kickdownrequestand evenwhetherthecarisbeingdrivenupordownhill.Ondetectingamorespiriteddrivingstyle, thetransmissionwillautomaticallymaketheshiftsmoreaggressiveandmovetheshiftpoints higher. Inordertomaintainthecarsbalanceduringadownshift,thetransmissionwillinstructtheengine managementsystemtoautomaticallyblipthethrottletomatchenginerevs.Thisfunctionalso allowsthetransmissiontoperformmultipleandveryrapiddownshiftsduringhardbraking. CornerRecognitionsenseswhentheFTYPEisnegotiatingacurve,thetransmissionholdingits ratiotoensurethecorrectgearfortheexit.Thetransmissionwillalsorecognizewhenthecaris performingaseriesofovertakingmanoeuvresrequiringrapidchangesinthrottleposition.Rather thanupshift,thetransmissionwillholdalowergeartoremainreadyforthenextdemandfor acceleration. Manualoverrideofthetransmissionisavailabletothedriveratanytime,usingeitherthesteering wheelmountedpaddlesortheconsolemountedselector.Movingtheshiftselectortotheleft gateaccessesmanualmode,inwhichthedriverpullstheleverrearwardforan

6 upshiftandpushesforwardforadownshift.IfDynamicModeisalsoselectedontheJaguar DriveController,thetransmissionwillnotautomaticallyshiftupattheenginesredlineandwill onlydownshifttopreventenginestalling,leavingcontrolfullyinthehandsofthedriver. TheConfigurableDynamics(availableasanoptiononV8S)isanotherfirstforaJaguar.This allowsthedrivertoselectwhichelementsoftheDynamicModearewanted,forinstance,the steeringweightandthrottleresponsecanbesharpenedwhileallowingtherideonmodelswith AdaptiveDynamicstoremainunchanged.ConfigurableDynamicsalsoaddsfunctionalitytothe centraltouchscreenaimedattrackuseofthecar.Thesystemallowsdriverstorecordlapand splittimesandwillprovideinformationonthrottleandbrakeinputsandevenGforcesgenerated. DynamicLaunchMode TheJaguarFTYPESoffersDynamicLaunchModefortrackdrivingactivities.Whenthecaris stationary,thedriverdepressesthebrakepedalwhilesimultaneouslybuildingenginespeedwith theacceleratoruntilamessagereadingDynamicLaunchReadyappearsintheinstrument panel.Thatsignalsthatthetractioncontrolhasbeensettohelpfacilitatemaximumacceleration. ReleasingthebrakewhileflooringtheacceleratorpedalkeepsDynamicLaunchModeengaged formaximumaccelerationperformanceuntilthedriverreleasesthepedal. LimitedSlipDifferentials AmechanicallimitedslipdifferentialisfittedasstandardtotheFTYPES,whichoffersdriverthe opportunitytoexplorethecarssuperbbalanceandouterlimitsofitsgripwithinaprogressive handlingenvelope. TheV8Smodelisfittedwithanactiveelectroniccontrolleddifferentialtomaximizetractionand offerevengreatercontrol.Insidethedifferential,anelectricmotoractsonamultiplateclutchto transfertorquetothewheelwiththemostgrip.Fullyautomaticinoperation,thesystemcan applyfulllockingtorquealmostinstantaneously.Workinginconjunctionwiththestability,traction andABSsystems,itallowsforveryfinecontrolofpowerdeliveryandalwaysmakesthemost useofavailablegrip. HANDLINGDYNAMICS ThealuminiumstructureoftheFTYPEensuresthebestpossibleconnectionforthedriverto

theroad.Everyresponsefromthesteeringtothetransmissionshifting,throttle,brakesand suspensionhasbeenfinelyhonedtobeasconnected,accurateandinvolvingaspossible. Fundamentally,agreatsportscarisoneyoulllookforwardtodrivingbecauseitsfun,andthe FTYPEdefinitelydeliversonthatscore.Weveworkedhardtomakesurethatresponsesto steering,throttleandbrakesareabsolutelyimmediate,ataskmadefareasierbytherigid aluminiumstructureatthecarsbase.Itspreciseandexciting,acarthatyoullwanttodrivefor thesakeofdrivingaloneanditsoundsfantastic.MikeCross,ChiefEngineer,Vehicle Integrity,Jaguar AgilityintheJaguarFTYPEbeginswithitsdimensions,whichgivethecaraplanted,wheels pushedtothecornersstance.TheFTYPEmeasures4,470mminlengthona2,622mm wheelbase.Thetrackiswiderinrearthanfront,1,585mmand1,627mm,respectively. Shortfrontandrearoverhangsalsohelpinconcentratingthemasswithinthewheelbase, reducingthemomentofinertiaandmakingthecarmuchmoreimmediatetoturnin.Tofully exploitthistrait,Jaguarengineerspaidparticularattentiontooptimizingfronttorearweight distribution.Tothatend,boththebatteryandwindshieldwasherfluidreservoirhavebeenplaced inthetrunk,ratherthanunderthehood. Togivethesteeringthegreatestaccuracyinresponseandfeedback,theFTYPEusesanalloy frontsubframeandverystifffrontknuckles,alsoinaluminium.Thisarrangementallowedthe fitmentofthequickeststeeringrackeverusedonamodernJaguar,givingthedriveravery connectedtotheroadfeeling. EveryJaguarisengineeredandtunedtoachieveanexcellentbalancebetweenridecomfortand handling.IntheFTYPE,thatbalancenaturallytipsinfavourofinvolving,accessiblehandling whilestillmaintainingexcellentridecompliance.TheDynamicModeenablesthedriveratthe pushofabuttontoemphasizethesportingcharacterofthecarbysharpeningthrottle response,increasingsteeringweighting,performinggearchangesmorequicklyandhigherup therevrangeandbyalsoraisingthethresholdforstabilitycontrolintervention.Dynamicmode alsopreventsautomaticupshiftswhenthegearboxisshiftedintomanualmode.
